I don't leave reviews but I'm taking time out of my day to give this place a measley single star rating. It was me and 3 other patrons in the restaurant and I waited over 40 minutes for my meal. I finally received my hashbrowns, eggs and bacon but no banana pancakes! It took even longer for them to throw 2 puny pancakes on the griddle with some bananas. When the check came out, I was appalled. $31.45 for this Little Boy Blue combo and some coffee. $4.59 to substitute blueberries for bananas?! In this economy?! I wish I wasn't so hungover, hungry and desperate for breakfast. For being called a "family restaurant" they sure don't treat you like family. This location is super neighborhood friendly, so thankfully for us, we were staying in the neighborhood. The menu gives Cheesecake Factory so you're in for some literature when you're leafing through the booklet. I ordered the patty melt ($17.99) and shared the turkey blt club ($18.99). The patty melt comes equipped with a third-pound burger topped sautéed onions and melted American cheese on marble rye. The patty melt was melting. Even in my drunken stupor, I could appreciate the marble rye bread which adds a little pizazz to the patty melt. Ten. My friends and I ordered a medley of things including an order of pancakes. After getting the urge for diner food, we decided to head to the Golden Nugget. Now, we didn't go into this experience with high expectations as we understand that any diner offering isn't likely to be great quality. Unfortunately, this spot was an insult to that category of breakfast food. I made my own omelette with spinach and mushrooms with a side of the potatoes. The large portions might be considered a plus, but not when they lack flavor and good quality ingredients. The potatoes also seemed as if they were flash-fried straight from the freezer bag they came from--dry and bland. We also got a side of the smiley face chocolate pancakes, which came out as disks of wheat (we ordered regular) flour and chocolate chips. We regretted our decision to stop in and even the free game of bowling couldn't save this spot. You're better off going elsewhere. read more

I absolutely love diners and diner food but this place did not hit the mark. To begin, we got some less than average tasting coffee. We ordered the veggie skillet, make your own omelette and happy face pancake stack. The skillet was really bad. The potatoes tasted like they had been previously frozen and not de thawed or cooked properly. The veggies were a mix of wilted spinach, mushrooms, onions and tomatoes. Half of the onions were raw and there was no seasoning. Then the waitress messed up our order and didn't put in the right code so we got whole grain pancakes instead of the happy face pancakes. We felt bad sending them back. The make your own omelette was fine. On top of all of that, each plate was about $18... I would not recommend eating here. read more

I had a sausage and cheese omelet and my boyfriend had the half pound bacon cheeseburger. My omelet was full of meat and cheese. Delish! The chunky potatoes weren't bad, but they were lacking seasoning. The bacon cheeseburger came with curly fries...if they can season those fries, they could do better with the breakfast potatoes. Just sayin'. Our server was attentive, refilled our drinks often, and did her job well. My only complaints are the teeny tiny parking lot (use at your own risk, I suppose) and the prices, which are a little bit on the steep end ($18.99 for my omelet and I think the burger was $19-20) but you are in Chicago where the prices are just typically higher. read more

Have to start off with the elephant in the room - their menu is stacked. From pancake to melts - whatever your diner comfort dish is, I guarantee Golden Nugget has it on their menu. Got in just before 6pm, maybe a third to a half of the tables were filled, but you could tell pretty immediately the staff was slammed with orders and severely understaffed. Seemed like it was just the manager and one other front of house person who was serving and the rest were cooks/busboys. We had to wait like 5 minutes to get seated and maybe another 10 or so before we got our orders taken. I opted to get the four deuces which was 2 eggs, 2 sausage links, 2 bacon strips, and 2 pancakes for like $16.99. Also ordered a side of hash browns for another $4. The food was all solid. I especially enjoyed the pancakes, but then again I was craving it quite a bit. Also tried some onion rings from another person and they were decent. Overall, it's pretty standard breakfast diner food. Nothing that's going to knock your socks off, but also nothing was outright terrible. Definitely on the overpriced side, but then again this place is open 24 hours including Christmas Day so surely there's an upcharge for keeping the lights on then. Not some place I'm going to frequent on the often. Especially with some other restaurants including a certain polish sausage place across the street, but if for whatever reason you're trying to eat a breakfast before 7pm or some wicked late night munchies, this place is a decent option. read more

I love a great breakfast place! And when it comes to breakfast, this place has the options! It's a comfort food diner so keep that in mind going in. They have every imaginable combination of sweet/salty/savory breakfast plate possible and hot coffee to wash it down. I've been here a few times and have never been disappointed. The portions are adequate to say the least, the service is good, and overall the menu is accurate in its description of what you're going to receive. The prices are a bit high for this sort of food without the "hipster atmosphere ". However once you realize that you don't need weird music, PBR, and communal picnic tables to jazz up your breakfast experience, they don't seem that unacceptable. The Nugggg!!! A true late night gem! This place is right up the street and I've been there for breakfast, but came in after a late night out the other week. You see quite the cast of characters around midnight. The elderly couple getting a jump start on their day, the local hipsters showing a local classic the love it deserves, 2nd shifters fueling for the next day, and ne'erdowells like myself binging before a alcohol induced sleep. Then, we went through the bag without it stapled, and she handed me an un-stapled bag...guess that wasn't 'policy' after all. Don't get carry-out from here...come to think of it, if all their managers and servers behave this way, don't go here at all! And this is a heads-up...I will now no longer accept stapled, taped, or 'stickered' bags...from ANY establishment...fast food or otherwise. I'm sick of this crap! I should be able to sit there and CHECK MY ORDER to make sure nothing is messed up. I shouldn't have to deal with weird looks when double-checking, and I ESPECIALLY shouldn't have to deal with attitude when YOU SCREWED UP THE ORDER!!!!! I admit we only stopped here unplanned, on Christmas Eve after 11pm. We picked up a visiting relative from a late O'hare flight and there was nothing to eat where she was to stay. My brother remembered this location on the way. There is a parking lot but it's kind of small and cramped. We came in and had good, attentive service (for a while). There were a few parties there but we had spaces to stretch out and breathe. At that hour I really only wanted decaf coffee and something sweet. I shared the strawberry pancakes. The relative had a sandwich and french fries with no salt. The portions were huge, and it was economical but not super cheap. The only downside was having to hunt for the waitress to give us the bill, but on the eve of a holiday and having some privacy it was no big deal. Came here with a few friends after a night out. The waitress who served us was friendly and nice. They had a variety of foods to choose from. If you want breakfast foods or savory lunch/ dinner foods, they have it all. I gotta say the Benedict Florentine is my go to and this place didn't disappoint. They give u a large amount of food and nothing was cooked poorly. Our water and coffee were always being refilled without asking so that was nice.
