Would have been a 3 star experience, if it wasn't for the prices. $17 for an omelet is a bit much unless we are talking about a darn good one, and this was more of a scramble, packed in a square shape. My husband and I came by Golden Nugget when we first arrived in Chicago last Thursday morning. We parked and walked in right at 7 am. We were acknowledged by a server (seems like she was the only server on the floor at this time) and told to sit anywhere. We picked a booth and were given menus. But we both noticed the breakfast specials sign on the table and decided to order that, which was: 2 Buttermilk Pancakes with 2 Extra Large Eggs (sunny side), 2 links of Sausage: The buttermilk pancakes were nice and fluffy and made just right. A side of syrup and butter was served, which was well more than needed. The eggs were cooked perfectly and so were the links of sausage. 2 French Toast Wedges with 2 Extra Large Eggs (scrambled), 2 strips of Bacon: The French toast was pretty sweet and did not need syrup. The eggs were made perfectly and my husband liked his crispy bacon. Both of our breakfast meals were served with a large side of hash browns. The hash browns were made with thicker and longer cuts of shredded potatoes. But mine was not that hot and wished it was warmer. ----------------------------- (Total= $17.66 after tax, prior to tip) Service was minimum but friendly. My daughter picked out this place. I didn't really want to go since the Yelp ratings were pretty low. It looks like a an old 70's greasy spoon restaurant, so I was a little surprised by the prices. We spent $80 on 4 breakfast items and a coffee. 2 orders of pancakes, 1 crepe and 1 egg verde dish. The food was great and the service was wonderful. No wait on a Saturday morning was also a huge relief since we had tickets at 12 at the Shedd Aquarium. I knocked off the star, because it was really more expensive for what it was. I pretty always order the same thing when I visit golden nugget: the 3 fresh fruit warm compote crepes. I was pretty disappointed when the waitress brought me my plate because the crepes were all different sizes. one of them was super small as if for a child. this dish is already $14 with taxes, not including tip. that's like getting 3 different-sized pancakes or one big egg and one small egg on your plate. consistency is key! and these crepes were super mediocre in size compared to how they make the crepes at the Irving Park location. I've always wanted to try this pancake place out as we always pass by it, driving into the city. My husband and I ordered the Country Fried Steak and Eggs, Corned Beef Hash and Eggs, as well as some buttermilk pancakes. The first two entrees were your standard, straightforward diner food - steak was a little tough, eggs were cooked perfectly, and the corned beef hash was good. I was a big fan of their buttermilk pancakes, though - I don't know what kind of batter they use, but it was very delicious! Very fluffy, soft, and the right amount of sweetness with the maple syrup. Decided on a whim to check out the Golden Nugget. We went around 11pm on a Thursday night. Most of the tables were open. We were seated right away. Having not been to the Golden Nugget before, I went to Yelp to review food options. This is where I unveiled the hype around the curly fries. Look for yourself and you'll find several reviews talking about the curly fries and how you can "upgrade" to curly fries at no cost. We normally don't opt for curly fries, but in this case we made an exception. The waitress was prompt in taking our order which turned out to be a slice of coconut cream pie, curly fries, and pigs in a blanket. Nothing was gourmet. Everything was carb loaded. We ate a lot of food. It was fun and tasty, in simple way. Specifically, the coconut cream pie was excellent. The curly fries were good if you love curly fries - not sure I'd get them again. By the time pigs in and blanket arrived, we were full from fries and pie. We split one pig in a blanket and took the other two home to save for breakfast. The pancake was solid. Would I go again? Yes! It's exactly everything you want in a quick service, well-priced establishment that meets your late night pancake craving. The service was excellent, food was mediocre, and the coffee terrible. I had been a steady customer at Golden Nugget restaurants for a very long time. I can't remember ever being disappointed until last night. I ordered a favorite, blueberry pancakes, sausage links and coffee. The pancakes were edible but the came with a flood of blueberry compote and whip cream. To my recollection this is not how this meal should be served. Agree? The links and coffee were good, as was the service. But I payed $26 with tip and I found that outrageous. The Nuggets were a great chain of 24/7 restaurants that served an array of dishes and were superb breakfast joints. But what I got was a rather dismal serving of something I hardly recognized. Damn good Breakfast this morning so we got this free $10 voucher from Buyzooka.com and we were gonna go get a hair cut around the corner at Joe the Barber, so we figured lets have breakfast before our haircut parking for this place stinks they have a very small lot behind the restaurant and I do mean very small, don't bring a truck or big SUV unless you want to park on the street and pay for parking but we got parked and went in and the young girl was grabbing menu's to seat us as we walked through the door, and they got us coffee and water right away, I got the Chicken fried steak and it was very good with a nice thick country gravy on top, 3 Eggs scrambled hard as I do not like runny eggs, and the hash browns were some of the best I have had in years nice and brown and crisp, and 2 slices of toast I tried my partners pancakes as that what they advertise that they have been making since 1966 and I could see that they were nice and fluffy an looked really good, and tasted just as good as they looked if not better I look forward to going back good food at good prices even without the coupon it was under $25 for us both and they are open 24/7 read more

I will never ever eat at this place again. First the hostess had an attitude. We ordered our food the steak had no seasoning and was not cooked well than the eggs were slimy. We told the waitress and she said that's the way eggs are made, i told her i make sunny side up eggs and it doesn't come out like that. The only two thing that were good was my daughter's grill and the jelly that went on my sister's toast that they didn't have to make. When i went to pay the check the waitress said she won't charge for the soups i told her that as she saw i didn't eat my foods but she just ignored me so i paid the whole check plus soups a grand total of $87.00. Normally, I'd give this restaurant a 4 star review based on previous experiences with their great service and decent food, but after the experience I just had I have to give it one star. Just a little while ago (5:30am) I stopped by for some early morning brunch: I walk in behind a lady looking to pick up an order. There are 2 women working by the register/bar area and yet neither of them acknowledge my presence or offer to seat me (apparently it takes 2 waitresses to do an order pick up). I wait about 5 minutes to be acknowledged when the pick up order is done and am told to sit anywhere on the right side of the restaurant. I chose to sit in a booth near the bar to make it easier for people to remember I'm there (oh the irony). The waitress promptly comes over and gives me warm tap water with no ice and tells me she'll be back in a few to take my order. As I'm sitting there waiting for her to return, I find myself overhearing the two waitresses chatting up/flirting with these two guys sitting at the bar. I overhear that the waitress is 26 because she was born in 1994 (if any manager reading this would like to take note) as she and her coworker continue flirting with these guys. After waiting 10 minutes (I was looking at my phone clock) she has seemingly forgot about me as she continues to flirt with the guys at the bar. I get my jacket back on and start walking out the door and I hear her fellow waitress (who didn't actually seem to be doing anything at all) say something to the effect of "and he's going." No one bothered to ask me if there was anything they could do to get me to stay and they were probably happy I was leaving so they wouldn't have to do a little thing called their job. I recommend not going early morning, it's when they have their most immature and irresponsible staff on. read more

When it's late at night, I can always rely on them to fill me up with happiness for a reasonable price. My boyfriend and I ordered the double cheeseburger and Oreo pancakes. The meat was a little dry, but there was a ton of it with good flavor. The fries were nice and crispy and well salted. If you're the feeling the need for more seasoning, you can substitute for curly fries at no additional cost. The Oreo pancakes are literally a dessert for 4 people. I loved the first bite, but after 2 pancakes, it was just so sweet, even without the syrup! Really delicious, but will most likely only get when there's a lot of people there and not as an entree!
