Such a staple in our community. Their customer service is always great from the drive thru and the few times I have dined in. It has a few seats and is like taking a walk into the diner history. The finger steaks are one of the best things to get here. They are fried and meaty while packed with flavor. Shakes are always super tasty and a good price vs value. The cow pie shake is a solid go to for any ice cream lover and one of my favorites! The burgers always have fresh ingredients but compared to the other burger places in town, I'd say it's an average burger, but it's also just $5-7. I've tried them all and always go back to the super burger or the mushroom burger. Fries and tots are average too but a large will serve two people easily. We FINALLY tried this spot super close to us and really enjoyed it. It was closed when we moved to the area, and I did some research to find out why. I learned that it seems a community rallied to get it back open, which is cool. Anyway, the burger was super refreshing for a small drive-in joint. It was the basic but delicious one that you want at a place like this. I appreciated the classic bun they use -- don't try to be fancy when classic is the way to go! We got tots and fries, and I preferred the fries. Really good! The strawberry shake was yummy but didn't really stand out against some of the other local burger joints I've had. I've been coming here for 53 years (since 1971). I've always loved this place. After a long absence, I stopped by for lunch today. (Their limited hours, and the fact I live on the other side of Boise, means I don't think of them as often as I used to). The crinkle fries were as delicious as they've always been- hot, salty, and tasty! The double burger is bigger than I expected, and really good, other than I'm not used to someone putting SO MUCH MUSTARD on a burger. (It's a condiment, not the main course!) I don't like their stubby styrofoam drink cups (not a good fit in the cup holder) but all in all, this was a good meal. The fries seemed expensive, but whatever- all fast food is expensive these days. At least this is better quality. Now for the missing 2 stars: The burger comes with Tomato, Lettuce, Mustard, Sauce, and Pickles. I only wanted Mustard and Onions. I get that profit margins are razor thin, but charging 60 cents for onions is ridiculous. Maybe I should have asked them to "substitute" the onions for the more expensive vegetables, and they wouldn't have treated it as an "add-on." But since I did not know I'd be charged, I simply asked for Mustard and Onion only. I can well afford 60 cents, but it's the principle of it all. Next time, I'll ask for the Tomatoes, Lettuce, Pickles on the side, and make sure I'm getting what I'm paying for, even if I don't want them, and just throw them away. Hey- if they're going to be petty, I can be too. Someone at the store thought gouging the customer for 60 cents was a good idea, but I won't be back anytime soon as a result, so was that charge really a good policy, Golden Wheel? Sad :-( read more

Food is always delicious and hot off the grill. Brought multiple friends here for the first time and they all love it.

I wish I could give more stars, but Golden Wheel is still struggling. A family tragedy hit them hard, so we need to show grace here. My favorite thing on the menu is their crinkle cut fries with a delicious ketchup, fry sauce or ranch, but a Large fry is $4.75 plus tax, with a tiny tip, it comes to $6. I can't remember paying $6 for just fries at any drive in. I think the hamburgers are fine, but have also gone up in price. I know everything has gone up in price everywhere, but what I fear is the local loyal families who have always enjoyed here and supported them will no longer be able to treat their families much longer. Definitely not the Golden Wheel I remember from years ago. The (very young immature) staff were not helpful almost bordering on rude, the place was a mess inside, you could see from the walk up window where you order, there was a mop bucket with mop in the middle of the kitchen, they had a few tables outside but the light was 1/2 burnt out. If we were not starving we would have gone elsewhere. The food.... was just ok , again not what I remember it being like. I ordered the teriyaki chicken burger & fries, my husband order a burger but I do t recall which one. My chick was dry and did not taste like teriyaki at all so I asked for more sauce and they gave me some, but it didn't really improve the sandwich. Oh well lesson learned. Not going to go back. Newly reopened after a long closure advertising "same owners". The menu is very limited due to a staffing shortage. They are offering finger steaks, some kind of chicken-guessing tenders, fries, tots and corn dog, assorted shakes. The good: an ample portion of sauce provided. The bad: lowest quality food imaginable. Finger " gristle"steaks were over $8 and didn't include fries. Watered-down soda. Low quality dog in corn dog. No burger on the menu. No dine in currently, but they have several picnic tables on the property if you want to eat there. My go-to is the Cheese Burger (beef patty, American cheese, special sauce, mustard and shredded lettuce) Combo with tots and fry sauce ($7.40 + tax). It comes with a medium sized soda and a tub of sauce. They make all of their sauces from scratch. I usually get Fry sauce, but you can also get Ranch or Ketchup. read more

I'm definitely a fan of this place! Even though it's clearly on Fairview, if you blink, you can miss it. This place is a simple burger joint with a variety of options for when you have the cravings for a good burger. The staff are extremely warm and friendly, and make you feel welcomed throughout your dining experience. Last time I was there, I indulged in the chili cheese dog: foot long coney dog smothered in chili and cheese, topped with onions and jalapenos. It was definitely a gut buster! The owner had to raise prices considerably though which I fear will dissuade many from coming back once they see that what they used to get last year for $9.00 now costs $13+. No more combo add on (fries/drink for $3.50) Everything is ala cart and things like finger steaks with fries and drink will now cost you $15 for a combo! Considering the old menu pricing, the increase is huge! I guess that is a sign of the times with everything going up in price these days. For 20-years I have driven past Golden Wheel and every time I pass I've said to myself, "I need to try that place." I finally stopped in this week; but before I get into the detail let me pass on my burger-philosophy. There are so many burger joints to choose from it always come down to personal preference. I don't need to spend $12 on a burger to enjoy it... in fact my favorite burger in town is about $4. Universally what makes a good burger? Is it the bun, fresh crunchy produce, perfectly melted cheese, well seasoned patty, or maybe the perfect ratio of condiments? Maybe it isn't one, maybe it's a combination of them all. Whatever your choice this iconic American food is beloved. I am well aware that Golden Wheel has significant nostalgia for those native to Boise and you gotta respect a business that has been in the community for as long as Golden Wheel... but, I am sorry to say, "I just don't get it." I ordered a standard cheeseburger and quite frankly was disappointed. My burger wasn't much different than those big chain fast food burger joints. The fries were okay but not worthy of an honorable mention. Overall I was disappointed; maybe it was my fault... 20-years of built up anticipation had created an expectation no one could meat (pun intended). The thing is, as I look back and consider what universally makes a good burger I feel as if Golden Wheel missed the mark on all counts. I wanted them to be better, I was pulling for them... Located off Fairview Ave. where Wildwood Drive separates them from Larry H Miller Subaru, it is easy to miss in traffic if you are not looking for the turn. If you miss the drive in turn, just turn next at Wildwood and circle around from behind. Family owned and operated, they have Excellent hamburgers and choices, fries, tater tots and corn dogs. The corn dogs are the best to be found at any Boise/Meridian drive in location. Their crinkle fries are great and ask for them mixed with the tots, they will gladly accommodate. Annnnnd...fourth stop on Burgerpalooza--quest for the best effing burger in B-town brought my group of misfits to the Golden Wheel. I say misfits...because, well...our assessment of the joint doesn't jive with the overall Yelpy consensus. We gave them an average of 2.25 stars. Their lowest score came in at a 1 out of 10 for their fries. Their highest marks were 6 out of 10 for quality ingredients. Overall, they didn't really get any stellar marks. Their fries are crinkle cut and taste very much like something I could make in my oven,from a sack of Ore-Ida. Nothing tasted particularly fresh. Beyond the meh food, the service was kind of...well...odd. Here's what happened: While I was there, I was also picking up a to go meal for a child. I couldn't readily find the kids stuff on the menu board, and so I was trying to ask if they had kid specific deals. However, I was having a complete brain flatulence as I could NOT for the LIFE of me think of the phrase "kids meal" or "meal deal" or even "combo" and so...well...it went something like this (and I should mention that there was no one else in line so I wasn't holding anything up): Golden wheel employee: Is that all for you? Me: Yes...oh, wait, no! Do you have a kids....you know...umm....*frantically scanning menu*...a kids...what are they called...value meal? Now...apparently..."value meal" is a McDonald's specific phrase--a fact of which I was not aware given I haven't stepped foot into a McDonald's in over half a dozen years. GWE: A value meal? A VALUE meal? Really? Me: Well...whatever you call them? Do you--Oh! *I spot them on the menu at this point and order* GWE: Continues to shake his head and mutter "value meal...omg...a VALUE meal" I mean, I get it. You're an independent burger joint and feel a great distinction ought to be made between yourself and the corporate, soul sucking monstrosity that all things McDonald's represents. I do. But, play nice. I'm just a gal trying to buy a kid a burger. It's not like I requested "chicken Mcnuggets" or asked if they sold "Big Mac's." A little understanding goes a long way. Other than that a very banal sort of experience. Nothing was particularly good, but nothing was horrifying bad either. I will say, the Burgerpalooza participant who was the most generous with her score mentioned having fond memories of the place from her childhood when her mother would pick up Golden Wheel for her and her siblings every Friday night . So...there is something to be said for a place with deep roots in the community. You gotta respect that. read more

Well we used to like the golden wheel, our kids grew up near it and we went there all the time. Are used to enjoy the friendly environment and the good food and burgers. No come post Covid, pulled up to grab a burger with the wife at dusk and didn't know they were open. All exterior lights are burnt out including most of the sign... after ordering through the window I noticed the lights inside the kitchen or hardly working and everyone was tripping over a large mop bucket in the middle of the floor. I asked if I could use the bathroom so I could wash and was told it was closed, because of Covid. I was confused and asked if she was sure the bathroom had Covid. The restaurant seating area where we used to sit was locked and looks like they're using it as a messy storage room. There are a few tables outside to sit out with absolutely no lighting, tables were dirty and not clean. Then, to top it off, our food was terrible. Both bacon mushroom burger and a chicken burger we got were so mediocre, not at all what this place used to be. Very worried they have let it go downhill and even more worried they won't survive during this hard time. They only had one side of the drive-in open, the other side was blocked off and there wasn't even a garbage can to put your trash away in. Sad. read more

I'm picky about burgers, but decided to try the Superburger and I'm glad I did: well-cooked patty, juicy tomato, flavorful sauce, and a decent price ($6). On the other hand, the shredded lettuce falls out the sides (whatever happened to a real leaf?) and fries are purchased separately. But I didn't come here for fries. I wanted a rich and hearty meal that I could afford, and I'm pretty sure I'll be back. read more

so I've been eating here since the mid 70's I don't live in Boise anymore, so when I was in the neighborhood I thought I'd stop in for a bacon burger and tater tots , cuz normally they're really good...I drove off eating my tots and got about a mile away when I started to chow down on the bacon burger, two, three, four bites in I looked at the burger and did not see any bacon ! I pulled over and lifted the bun no bacon.... I thought dang... I still had 28 miles to go and so I turned around and drove back to the restaurant and walked up to the window and told them that there was no bacon on my burger, the young lass who was serving the window kind of pointed at my burger and said yes there's a slice... I looked and there at the very bottom of the burger was A. Slice of bacon,! Not on top of the meat but hidden down at the bottom...all flat and soggy... i apologized for not seeing it..and asked if I could order a side of bacon cuz I love a good bacon burger..! Kid said sure for a $1.80 I set my burger down and told them no problem, let me go get my purse...meanwhile a family came up to the window to order,when I got back to the window the "cook" had ordered the kid server to close the window , I was confused, the the cook told me to go away we're closed... the cook just got all rude with everyone and shut the window and walked away.. I had to open the window and reach in to retrieve my partially eaten burger... the cooks rudeness really set us off... the man and his little family wife and kids, and me... a litte kindness would have gone a long way... but the man with the black hair and facial fuzz... was flat out rude and it seemed like he had a problem with Pride... in one act of rudeness he turned off 6 paying customers... not to mention the people who heard everything while in the drive thru... Golden Wheel Drive Inn has been a staple "burger joint" in Boise since the 1950s. In fact, my mom worked there illegally when she was 14 :) After an owner change last year, this place really hits the mark in it's genre. They continually strive to use QUALITY ingredients instead of trending toward dumbing down their quality, which is what a lot of these places are doing, thinking it will help them survive. I ordered a veggie burger which was delicious and the bread they used was tasty and spongy as well. They still have everything they're known for like their finger steaks and delicious milkshakes, but have added healthier items like veggie burgers and sweet potato fries which is awesome! Seriously! Try the sweet potato fries... I was making a work visit on GW when they were testing them, so the sweet potato fries should be up on the menu soon. Go check out one of Boise's best and longest standing drive inns and you'll see why they are still around. read more
