I've been here four times so far, and each time it's good. Their horchata is authentic and very good. I've had their enchillada plate which is good. Also had their pupusas. Golfo de Fonseca is the largest bay on that stretch of the Pacific Central American coast and is simultaneously bordered on the northwest by El Salvador, northeast & east by Honduras, south & southwest by Nicaragua. In 1849 there was even a treaty between the U.S. & El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua to tentatively propose a canal to connect the Atlantic & Pacific, but of course, the eventual canal went through the much narrower Isthmus of Panama. Pupusa is probably the national dish of El Salvador. Basically it's usually made of masa harina which is a dried version of the fresh Masa de Maiz meaning corn dough in Spanish . The masa is corn kernels soaked & heated in water with calcium hydroxide which allows the tough corn hull to slip off leaving the soft protein/starch to be ground up & used for cooking. So pupusa is basically a flat round pancake of masa stuffed with various food stuffs & grilled to form a "flatbread". Los Angeles Community College is directly across Vermont Avenue from Golfo de Fonseca so it must get plenty of business from the students looking for a cheap, filling, tasty meal during the lunch & dinner hours. I went around 9pm on a Monday so that the ordering was quick & easy from an efficient, perfunctory waitress. Looking around Golfo de Fonseca, don't expect a chic, stylish maison de cuisine. It's a dive and quite comfortable about its humble yet clean state. I ordered a beer and the waitress was fast in listing Bud & other such American mass produced beers which really don't interest me in the least. So I asked for a Salvadoran beer which was in stock called Cerveza Suprema in a shamrock green botitle. The beer looks slightly cloudy as though unfiltered like German Weissbier. The bouquet is lightly yeasty. Taste is touch of taffy with a hint of hop refreshing bitterness, and a smooth slightly green herbal sweet finish. Ordered Pupusa de Revuelta which is stuffed with cheese, pork that may have been chicharron, fried pork skin & associated fat & meat, a bit of frijoles. Pork was the main flavouring ingredient giving this pupusa a gamey meaty, touch of barnyard-like funky porkiness. Great flavours for those who like a chewier, slightly wild carnivorous aroma & flavor along with the hefty starch of the masa de maiz that was soft & pillowy inside and slightly toasted drier, crustier texture on the outside. Also ordered the Pupusa de Loroco which is "Fernaldia pandurata/common name: loroco (loh roh koh), a vine with edible flowers." In the pupusa, the loroco was slightly wilted with a soupcon of a sour, bitter aroma. The stringy mild flavoured cheese that reminded me of Mozzarella was lightly creamy & allowed the subtle flavor of the loroco to come through. I especially liked the pupusa de loroco since it had a more refined, subtle flavor combination that went particularly well with the Suprema beer. Curtido, a lightly fermented shredded cabbage like a lightly sour Sauerkraut, that clears the palate, is included as well as a squeeze bottle offering of Salsa Roja which is a watery mild red chile salsa to lend a gastrique to the starchy oiliness of the pupusas. Good tasting pupusas under $2 each, and a big sign announces $1 pupusas on Wednesdays. That must be when the LACC students come out en masse. 3++ Yelp stars for pupusas that are appetizing & a bargain. PS Since this is a Salvadoran & Mexican restaurant, there are other dishes to try out with a lot of the food being based on seafood. So apparently there are three of these (chain) but I confess, after visiting the on Vermont yesterday (across street from L.A. city college) I'm already a fan of this location. I like that they serve beer. I like that they have a bar type counter. I like that they have tv monitor's with futbol on the screen, and I must say, that even though this place is primarily Salvedorean, the carnitas tacos I had yesterday were just as good as any I've had anywhere. Ironically, better than the pupusas. Had bean & cheese pupusas, which were tasty, but not quite as hot (temperature wise) as I've had at other Salvedcorenos. They definitley were good though. Absolutely terrible service. We are from a senior day care. Every single one of our elderly have complained. Their service is terrible and quality is saddening. We tried working with management and what they could offer was tragic. I expected more from a family owned business. I expected them to care about the elderly community. Wow! So fresh and delicious! I don't know how they do this magic, but they do it right. We ordered chicken tamale, chicken soup, shredded pork tacos, bean pupusa, and a pork burrito. I think we're just going to keep ordering from them until we've tried everything. They delivered in a flash to our Silver Lake home. So. Dang. Amazing! I believe they do use lard, and I personally don't have a problem with that. Everything tastes light and zingy. What's great about this food is the herbs and spices show up in layers in your mouth. The Soupa de Pollo $6.99 I get nervous coming into any "ethnic" restuarant because often I feel I'm approached different for being white and not able to speak the other language but I was very comfortable and treated like family. I didnt care how small my portion was just excited to get warm soup for 7 bucks. I also got tea which was brought out first.. along with two beautiful homemade THICK tortillas which I wish I knew the name of and a side of rice some limes and onion/cilantro. Not long after my big bowl of soup came. Broth was the perfect temperature not hot and seasoned just perfect. Not too much flavor but still some homemade touches. Enough vegetables and potatoes. I'm stuffed. Overall the price, the location, atmosphere, and food were all great. I felt like I was in mom's kitchen just eating lunch before my philosophy test the whole time. Looking for decent/affordable Mexican and Salvadorian food? Well look no further because this is your spot! Although I wouldn't rate it 5 stars, don't let it completely discourage you. Right off the back, I will say that the service and attitude is a flip of the coin type deal. The employees can be delightful one day and the next time you visit, they don't even want to be bothered by you. I'm just glad that they do not take it out on the food. The food is just "ok" in the flavor department but you do get a bargain quantity-wise. It's also pretty consistent; so if you enjoy your order one time, you'll most likely enjoy it each time. (At least, this is my experience). Their daily specials are such a steal! My favorites are the pupusas on Wednesday (.99 cents), the chicken sandwich on Tuesday (2.79), and the burrito (2.79) on Thursday. I only had the cheese and pork pupusas, and my only regrets are not calling in early for my order and not ordering more... Alejandra has such an excellent customer service ethical, she goes beyond to please the customer when she takes orders over the phone and when you arrive at the restaurant you can see her kindness while greeting you. Well that was until today I called and some guys took my order over the phone, he seemed to be in a hurry to even wanting to hang up before I finished with my order, sure enough when I got home the order was wrong. I called and Alejandra was so nice that offered me to come back tomorrow which I declined but not without asking her to tell the guy that took my order to learn from her when taking orders. She apologized and was so nice. I hope the owner reads this and appreciate what a good employee Alejandra is. I don't know her and in fact I just learned her name when I called to complain. I would give them a 2 starts if it wasn't for the excellent service that Alejandra give us!
