There are many dim sum places in San Francisco, especially on Clement Street. This is one I go to often because it's across the street from the market I shop at they have all of the normal favorites with a small seating area in the back. Tim is usually sold by three pieces to an order starting at 4:50 which is a good price. Weekends can be more busy with a line out the door, but it goes fast and it's not really a problem. Pro tip parking is free on Sunday in San Francisco.

Cash only. Primarily a take out spot as there is limited seating inside. They have most of your standard dim sum items how to discount. For some reason, I think the flavors lose something when you don't eat it piping hot at a restaurant. If you don't end up eating it immediately, make sure to resteam or refry the items. The flavors were fine, but not spectacular. To be honest, I'm not entirely convinced this place is better than any of the other takeout dim sum spots in the area.

I had a very disappointing experience today. I spent over $70 on takeout, including shrimp dumplings, pork dumplings, sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf, and several other dim sum items. While eating my shrimp dumplings, I found what felt like a small piece of wire or metal inside the third dumpling. It was shocking and could have caused a serious injury if I had swallowed it. Finding a foreign object in food completely destroyed my confidence in this restaurant's food preparation and quality control. I immediately threw away everything I had purchased because I no longer felt comfortable eating any of it. Food safety should be every restaurant's highest priority. Based on my experience today, I cannot recommend this place and will not be returning!!

This is a popular place the line goes out the door.

Very nice ladies at the counter. Grab a menu, pick your favs, order to go. Only a couple tables inside. All are cooked fresh daily. We get a mix of all our favs. Steam wrapped prawns, pork buns, lo mai hai, noodles, sooooo many delish items. This is our go to grab and go in San Francisco. Love it here.

Siu mai: 5/5 thick juicy flavor's all there Shrimp dumpling (har gow): 3/5 the shrimp inside is good but the crystal outer layer was too thick and tough. Fried taro: 5/5 so good!!! Taro was the smoothest I've had. Each order comes with 3 pieces. 2 orders each of siu mai, har gow, fried taro: 18 pieces, fed two people~ $23 More of a take out place, but there's like 8 tables inside that you can sit in casually. Line moves fast. Don't forget to tip the nice ladies! Ask for hot sauce and soy sauce on the side if you're doing take out.

Cheap, quick, tasty. This was my first time trying a "takeaway" dim sum spot where you order at the counter. The line moves fairly quickly. I recommend you get a paper menu and pen from the front and then get in line. Circle the things you want and just pass it to the person at the counter. I came here at 8:30am on Saturday and everything was fresh and tasty. There is a small dining area in the back with a handful of tables and chairs. I got the Pork siu mai, shrimp dumpling, fried sesame ball, and egg tart, and a baked pork bun. The pork siu mai and shrimp dumpling were juicy, flavorful, and filling. The fried sesame ball has that classic chewy texture that I love. And the egg tart bottom was a bit thick but the overall tart was creamy and sweet. I'd gladly order all again. I saved the baked pork bun for my hike and ate it on the beach about 4 hours later- wow it was still nice and soft, flavorful, and satisfying. I'd absolutely come back here just for that pork bun. I'll be back, and this may just become a regular spot for me when I'm Richmond.

Love this place!! Delicious dim sum to go. Fast service, tons of options and bring cash!

If you like dim sum and have not been to Good Luck then you are missing out. I would also mention that this is not a typical dim sum place. You order all your food at the counter, CASH only, and they put it in plastic containers. They have a few tables, but it is a lot better if you just take it to go and eat it somewhere else. I would also mention that the service is very quick and they appreciate it if you know what you want and order quickly to move lines along. Now, on to the important part! They have a wonderful assortment of dim sum. A couple of my favorites are their shrimp dumplings, their shrimp and chive dumplings, the sesame balls, the egg tarts, rice wrapped in lotus leaves, and their BBQ pork buns. The best part is the food is still a good deal, which is very hard to find in SF. We ordered a ton of food, enough for three people for $55. Probably could have fed four people with that amount of food. This place is awesome and has been for a long time!

I had a work assignment close enough to the area, and whenever I'm in the Sunset, Dim Sum is a must. I searched Yelp for the best Dim Sum in San Francisco, and Good Luck kept popping up--both there and on another site. Lucky for me, I was only a block away from the 736 Clement location. I arrived around 10:30 on a Thursday morning, and it was just me and two other customers--already a great sign. I went ahead and ordered one of almost everything. Every bite delivered: chewy, crunchy, flavorful, and downright delicious. The egg rolls were vegetarian, but packed with so much layered flavor that you'd never miss the meat. The wrapper was crisp and perfectly crunchy. The baked BBQ pork bun had just the right amount of stickiness, and the filling struck a beautiful balance between BBQ and sauce. And the bun itself soft, lightly sweet, and wonderfully chewy. The selection is endless, and every item I tried was absolutely worth it.

Service at any to go dim sum in SF is just so so. Those ladies never said hi , no smiles, some how every time I go there , it seems like I go there to bother them Anyway, I like this dim sum place BUT every single time, never have receipts so I don't know know which is which bc NO itemize receipt. I also believe they over charged me Today I paid $36.00 ( see picture) it's way overpriced

Went to good luck dimsum around 12:30 on Saturday. Price went up by 20 cents per order

Stopped by for a late lunch as I was in the area. I've been meaning to check out Good Luck dimsum for ages, so I'm glad I finally had the chance! I came by Sunday afternoon around 2:30 and surprisingly it wasn't crowded at all. There was barely a line. I knew I was going to order a bunch of different items, so I grabbed their ordering form and checked off everything I wanted. Unfortunately not everything was available, but having this form made ordering so much easier, especially because a lot of items are the same price and you can combine items to get the 3 for $4.20 price. They have a couple tables in the back for dine-in. Originally I was planning to grabbing the dimsum to go, but once I saw there were some open tables, I changed my mind and decided to eat here while everything was fresh. Here are my thoughts on what I ordered: Favorites: beef siumai, pork siumai, sesame ball, ma lai gow OK: ha gow, lo bak go / turnip cake (though it was a bit bland) Skip: taro puff (bland and not much meat), egg roll (bland) I really enjoyed the food. However, I'm guessing there was a lot of msg in it cause I was immediately super thirsty after eating and was chugging water like crazy. I'll probably stick to dimsum to go places in SF Chinatown as the Richmond is far from me, but I'll definitely stop by Good Luck if I'm in the area again!

Good Luck Dim Sum Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Good Luck Dim Sum

Does GL use MSG? It gives me terrible migraines and hives. I can't find any info. Thanks.

I ordered there Dim Sum and other foods. Definitely, they use MSG. I can taste it I would say it's light about 5%. But if you suffer from allergic reaction that could be too much for you. Take Allegra will help.

Place to sit? (sounds like no). If not no, push carts?

Yes! After you order there are places to sit in the back it's limited though!

Anyone find an app that can pick up and deliver? GL is the best we've ever had.

Check their website. It says, "No delivery service.".....I wish they delivered, too.

Is there a nice place to sit down and eat after ordering?

The sit down area is closed off. House of Dim sum on Jackson st is a take out with a parklet to eat outside! Also inside tables. This is the only take out I know that has a parklet.

What kind of soy sauce mixture do they use there on the tables in bottles? I have not been able to find or replicate it

They use kecap manis diluted with regular light soy sauce.

They say they charge for pastry box. Do I need to bring my own container if I don't want to get charged?

If they do it's minimal. I wouldn't bring your own container, no one does.

Has anyone been here since the shelter in place? Are they open?

    Closed since March 23 :(

Did they change their steamed BBQ pork buns? They used to have the ones that were kinda open on top. Last time I got one it was the closed-top, more-spherical one with a bad meat-to-dough ratio.

There are two types of BBQ pork buns. The steamed ones are the ones you're looking for. The spherical ones are baked. You'll have to specify when you order.

Is there any/good selection of vegetarian options?

They have some good veggie options, I like the mushroom chow mein. They have veggie egg rolls and a couple veggie dumpling options. I think they have plenty to satisfy a hungry veg.

While we were waiting for our table, we saw 2-3 couples get turned away. The restaurant is small, but the interior is well-decorated. It pays homage to HK posters, music, and culture. They offer two complimentary small bites of smashed cucumber and peanuts. - XO Escargot: a must order, the dish only comes with 6 pieces but it's so worth it. The sauce is garlicky, buttery, and each bite with the milk bread is so good. The bread also has a crispy outer layer while the inside is super soft. - Eggplant: at first, we thought the dish was good, but the pieces on the bottom that soaks up all the sauce makes the eggplant full of umami flavor. This paired so good with rice. - Mapo Tofu Spaghetti: just as you imagine, but very yummy. I wish there was more of a numbing spice personally! - Black Pepper Steak: The steak was cooked perfectly to medium rare and the sauce was very yummy. This dish did not blow me away like some of the others but was still good nonetheless. I really wished we could have try the Singapore Chili Crab, but that would have been too much food. Our server was also fantastic and so kind, I wish I caught her name. Will def be back!

Overall I felt like the food was really overhyped and was a bit disappointed. Maybe we didn't order the standouts others listed. For two people, we got the fried squab (smaller for $35 instead of $45), escargot with milk bread, the ginger hainan chicken, eggplant, and the mapo spaghetti. Out of these dishes, my favorite was the eggplant, which was very flavorful and on point. I was most excited to try the escargot which was good and a bit spicy as well. The mapo spaghetti was a bit too spicy. I enjoyed the cozy vibe, the HK decor and old canto hits. Service was very friendly and attentive as well.

My husband and I had an entree each and dumplings, as well as a drink each, and the bill was low considering the amount we had. We did have a reservation. It seems difficult to get a table without one. For our appetizer, we ordered the vegetarian mushroom dumplings. I am not usually a fan of mushrooms (I find the mushy texture unappetizing), but they cooked them perfectly crispy, and they were delicious. I was surprised to have the dumplings served with no sauce to accompany them, however, and did not get a chance to request any. I had the mapo tofu (vegetarian), and it was a decently large serving. It was delicious, and the sauce was perfectly seasoned. Their green onions were my favorite part. My husband got the Peking duck, and I had to steal one of the buns it came with--it was so soft. The food came out pretty quickly, and the staff was attentive overall. I had one slightly awkward interaction with a waiter who seemed a little impatient when I confused myself while ordering, but otherwise the service was great. For drinks, we had an espresso martini and a lychee martini, and they were delicious. Do beware that there is an automatic 18% gratuity added to every check. This is less than I usually tip, so it did not negatively impact my experience. It's a great spot to bring friends or for date nights. I will be returning!
