Looking for a place to eat after our tour of the Capitol, we ended up here at Good Stuff. After all, if the President has eaten here, must not be too bad, huh? I got the steakhouse burger, my wife got the Prez Obama burger, and we split an order of fries and a Milky Way shake. The burgers were nice and beefy and they've got some fancy toppings that make the burgers unique. Very greasy, but what should I expect from a thick burger? The fries were a bit soggy/limp for my liking, but they were plentiful and I thought it was cool how they had all the fry dips (mango, Old Bay, sriracha, chipotle, etc). Milkshake was nice and thick, but the chocolate and caramel sauce made it nearly impossible to drink through a straw so we had to resort to a spoon. Overall, a good experience. read more

I was there this past Saturday and the place was crowded...wall to wall people. There's a certain buzz there; a place where you wanted to be included even if you hate crowds and may be a little claustrophobic. That's me to a certain extent. I agree with others, the burgers are small. Sure, they taste good, but for what I paid, they were small. The snack fry was filled with bits and pieces; not many true fries in the bag. Tasted OK, though, with the obligatory grease spots on the brown paper bag. Anticipation... The menu stated something about the 'bakery fresh bun', but if the cellophane diaper is tucked by GI Joe, doesn't that defeat the description? Stopped here before a work meeting at Cosi next door. Let me tell you, the Spike Sunnyside was everything for me in that moment. It's the best burger I've had with a fried egg atop. There were two reasons I didn't give this place 5 stars. One was because the line "signage" and situation was a little confusing. I got there right before the lunch rush. If I didn't get there before the confusing line started, I probably would have left out frustration and missed the great experience that sandwich provided me. Also, the sandwich was a bit salty but I chalk that up to the game. It maybe different next time I order it. They don't offer meals so everything is a la carte. :/ read more

Oh sweet, sweet, wonderful shake! I just had the seasonal pumpkin shake and it was a must try. The burgers are really good too. The Sunny side burger is a great burger for those you love them eggs with their burgers. I haven't tried their Obama burger, but I will order it on my next visit. By the way, this place gets really busy in the evening, but they staff works rapidly and efficiently. Lastly, this place can be pricey. Expect to pay at least 7+ dollars a meal. read more

My overarching question about this place was "Is it overhyped?" Hey, I get it...gourmet burgers and shakes from a "Top Chef" contestant...it has to be good, right? My girlfriend and I split the Blazin' Barn and Prez Obama burgers and an order of Village Fries. Some may say that the burgers are a bit small given the price. Personally, while they may not be massive, half-pounders on a huge-ass bun, I thought they were perfect-sized and I didn't feel disgustingly full (or greasy) after I was finished. While both were tasty, the Prez Obama burger was the better of the two, made by the roquefort cheese. The Blazin' Barn simply lacked the Asian/Vietnamese flavor zing that one would expect from the listed toppings. The fries were of medium thickness and very nicely flavored by the thyme, rosemary and sea salt. However, I thought they were a little on the soggy, greasy side. We didn't have any milkshakes. So, was it everything it was hyped up to be? I'm going to say, "no". While it had good burgers, I didn't think it was anything I couldn't do and do better at home. Naw buddy! Good Stuff Eatery failed to impress me in My Quest for the Ultimate Burger. I had the Big Stuff Bacon Meltdown and while it was big and stuffed and had bacon it wasn't particular good. First thing first, quality should always take the top spot over quantity. This sandwich is too big, it over powers the bun, you can barely take a bite out of it. Meat was flavorless, didn't seem to have any kind of seasoning placed on it. Bacon was good, nice crispness but not enough to overcome the bad burger. Burger overall was just blah. Fries were just eh as well, they weren't hot enough, crispy enough or tasty enough. Can't go wrong with a fancied up burger joint opened by a Top Chef contestant! Ok, maybe you could go wrong like Hubert Keller's Burger Bar (and he's a Top Chef MASTER), but that's a different story... on to the food! We had the farmhouse cheeseburger, free range turkey burger, village fries, and root beer float. The bf really liked his cheeseburger (nothing too special to note, but it's always important to make a staple great!). I LOVED my turkey burger - I wanted a "healthier" option so the turkey patty on wheat was satisfying, but not too heavy or greasy. The thyme, rosemary, and sea salt on the village fries added flavor, but what made it reaaaally good was the assortment of dipping sauces! I saw this place on Burgers, Brew, & Que. Inside you order and pick up on 1st floor and sit on the 2nd floor. I ordered the COLLETTI'S SMOKEHOUSE Burger and Vidalia Onion Petals. The smokehouse Burger has Applewood Bacon, Sharp Vermont Cheddar Fried Vidalia Onion Rings With Chipotle BBQ Sauce. It was simply outstanding. One of the best I've had. The Chipotle Bbq sauce is amazing. I wish they sold bottles of it. I'd buy it instead of my Sweet Baby Rays. The only downside is it's too small. As for the onion petals another home run. I also had a chocolate shake. It was supposed to be one of the best in DC. I found it extremely average. The only real downsides are the burgers are too small and the way you pick up food. If you like juicy burgers, then this is the place for you. If you don't like pink burger patties, this is not the place for you. My Colletti's Smokehouse was good and flavorful but tiny for $7.25. The bbq sauce and onion rings were good but made the burger a mess to eat. I like the black and white milkshake. In fact, in 90 degree heat, I took the drink out and enjoyed it across Pennsylvania Ave on a park bench, which was surprisingly more chill than inside this location. I would not recommend the fries. It had made the wrapper so soggy that it sorted combined with the bread and cheese. I couldn't tell if it was soggy bread or wrapper. The cooks are heavy handed with the salt. Both of our burgers were over-salted. Mine was worst. Pro = the patty. The patty was thick and juicy. For price, that's awesome. The village fries were really good. Overall, it was good. Waited in line for about 30-40 minutes, then waited for our food for about 15 minutes. I would've gotten burger with beef but all options on menu had bacon in them! And yes, I don't like bacon. Therefore, opted to try the Turkey burger with a black and white milkshake with Spike's Village Fries. Turkey burger was a bad choice! The patty was overly salty and the rest of the concoction wasn't appealing as well, soggy wheat bread and the light veggies didn't add much to the burger. The fries ugh.... why!!!! It really sounded so appealing when I was reading the menu. Fries were soggy and really sad and very thyme-y. All in all no good. The best thing about the meal was the black and white milkshake. Such great service in every way. the person who took our order was an absolute sweetheart her attitude was one of the best I've ever seen and the service industry. With me being a beverage director I've seen so many people in this industry and she was easily one of the best. Including the amazing experience with her, the food was very quick and so delicious. We had the turkey burger and the veggie burger accompanied by old Bay, Chipotle, and mango sauce. All of them were super delicious and tasted very fresh. The fries were absolutely amazing. The name of them escapes me but they had Thyme on them and we're recommended by the young lady that took our order. In addition to all of that they also have alcoholic beverages which I did not get a chance to try but will next time I come. This is an excellent burger place near Capitol Hill between Eastern Market and Capitol South metro stations. It's a nice area of town and definitely walkable. The "lunch bag" deal is fantastic - burger, fries, and drink during work week lunch hours. I HIGHLY recommend their farmhouse bacon cheeseburger and their smokehouse burger. Their hand cut fries are tasty and definitely on the less crispy side (similar to Five Guys). Their hand spun milkshakes (cookies & cream) are also a great addition, especially on a hot day. read more

This burger place was good, but a bit too much on the greasy side for me. Went here this morning about 15 minutes after it opened and the line was already at the door. I grabbed a menu while my friend stayed in line and decided to get the Farmhouse Cheese ($5.89),Farmhouse Cheese Bacon ($6.69), an order of the handcut fries ($3.69) and two of their special cookie and cream shakes ($5+). For two people, everything came out to be just under $30. After we grabbed our condiments, we headed upstairs to find a seat. It was pretty crowded already, but lucky we found a spot (the upstairs isn't that huge and outside seating is limited). After about 10 minutes our sensor vibrated to let us know that our food was ready. Unwrapped our burgers and emptied out the fries and both were semi soaked with grease. The burger was tasty, but next time I'll have to remember to ask for my burger to be medium well (it looked to be medium). The fries (seasoned with sea salt) were okay, nothing special. The shake was pretty good, but if you didn't gulp it down fast enough, it got warm quickly. I ended up throwing more than half of it away. If you're not a fast drinker, I'd recommend getting a child's size shake. Overall this place was okay. I still prefer Five Guys over Good Stuff Eatery. If I'm near Capitol South metro, I'll go here again (which is rare). But, I wouldn't make a special trip to grab a burger here. read more

I've been here several times, mostly hoping to catch a glimpse of Spike (I've seen him twice, once mixing chili and once counting cash). I assume the crowds, with their camera-phones in hand, are doing the same thing. Coupled with the rush of workers from Capitol Hill, this place is always crowded. This probably contributes to the terrible service I usually get. The cashiers here are the type that smile and nod when you ask them for something but really are thinking about rainbows, unicorns, and where they are going to drink after work. All this notwithstanding, the burgers are good. I usually get the Obama burger despite my intense disdain for our current president; it's that good. However, the fries here are retarded. Seriously, they are worse than the fries you get when you are scraping the bottom of a McDonald's fry cup. They are tiny, drowned in rosemary, and somehow every single one is hollow in the middle. I thought the marshmallow shake was going to be too sweet but it wasn't, I like the toastiness and burnt marshmallow on top and the fluff. The fries was another story, it was overcooked and covered is thyme, they don't take the time to shake it so make sure to shake it so the herb and salt can mix with the rest of the fries at the bottom. The good stuff melt wasn't mind blowing and it taste like ur average burger with a really soft bun so eat it right away before it gets snoggy. Sadly Spike was not there but there was a lot people working with no really at the register until to stand there for awhile. Having once interviewed Chef Spike Mendelsohn and reading about Good Stuff Eatery, I had some high expectations for his flagship casual burger joint. Since it was out-of-way for me and my dining companion, we took the opportunity to go there following our friend's concert at the U.S. Botanic Garden. Not having eaten for a while that day, we were starving so our palates did not need a gourmet experience--we would have been more than happy with some good ol' hearty and delicious burgers. My DC ordered the Turkey Burger, I picked a plain burger, and we got a order of plain fries. Unfortunately, neither burger was good in either a comforting or gourmet sense. They lacked flavor. The spongy texture of both burgers was a huge turn-off, particularly for my DC. Knowing that GSE utilized naturally-raised beef and quality produce, we were not expecting mammoth-sized patties--we actually prefer moderately-portioned meals. However, the size was puny for even our standards, which was really a problem since they lacked much flavor to back up their compact sizes. Our hunger and paying a premium price were the reasons for finishing them. Furthermore, the burgers lacked any structural integrity (the bun was an amorphous, soggy mess) that made handling it a mess. The only redeeming feature were the fries, which although a bit greasy and floppy (except at the ends and thin left-over potato shavings), tasted pretty flavorful and helped to partly satisfy our hunger. The mayo bar with the mango, chipotle, and sriracha flavors were a nice touch--not to mention a way to fill-up. Since we were disappointed by the burgers, we opted to pass on the milkshakes. Overall, we felt very much let down in our experience at GSE, not to mention hungry and feeling like we paid too much for mediocre comfort food. We were also disappointed knowing Chef Mendelsohn was an accomplished fine dining chef. What happened to this place? i used to love it to bits and pieces, the creative burgers, the option to make any burger with grilled chicken. Yesterday me and a friend split 2 burgers. One was the Good Stuff melt (my go-to favorite) and it had blue cheese in the dressing-- they should really warn people because i hate blue cheese and gagged without being able to finish (if you , however, like blue cheese, i guess this would be a draw), and the blazin barn, which is amazing, however we order it with chicken (which i normally recommend) and the actual chicken didn't taste as good as it used to, i don't know if they have changed suppliers or what, but the chicken just did not taste like quality chicken. Lastly, avoid the onion rings at all cost-- you get about 7 for about $4 and all you really get are insanely greasy, not so crispy onion slices. ew! read more

I can understand the insane swing in ratings here. The people taking your order, really could not care less about you or your order, just want to get a paycheck at the end of the week. Food: ordered the Prez obama burger and snack fries. These are not enormous burgers, but combined, leaves you comfortably full. The burger, you cant say how you want it cooked, so hope the person who makes yours, makes it the way you'd like. Mine came out more medium then medium rare like i prefer. The crust on the burger, couldn't be better though. The burger combo/flavor, good, not great. The fries need to be in the fryer another 30-45 seconds, or fry them a second time for 60 seconds, they're too soggy. I did not get a shake, but the three girls who got their food before me tasted them and clearly enjoyed them. Um, why are there no condiment dispenders or fountain dispenser upstairs? Having eaten here several times before, this is a delish fav when it comes to burgers, fries, and shakes. A six minute walk from the Capitol South metro stop on the Blue line, Good Eats is often rather busy. There's limited stool seating downstairs, some outside, and most of the seating is upstairs. I've had the Farmhouse Bacon Cheeseburger which is moist and tasty every time. They have a great collection of speciality burgers, too. The Handcut Fries are plentiful for a single order. One could easily be split between two and even three people. Forget onion rings when onion petals come in a serving also worth sharing but you may not want to. The sauce station offers everything from ketchup to chipotle to old bay. Dip to your hearts' content! Lastly, whether you have one with your meal of afterwards, their shakes are ridic delish. Try the Vietnamese Coffee or the Red Velvet for something s little different. The Black and White for something more traditional. Good stuff lives up to its name! read more

I got the mini Oreo shake (which had a huge dollop of icecream and an Oreo on top) and fries on the side, which I dunked in Sriracha from their sauce bar. Fun fact: I even met President Obama here once randomly, he came in the day before his 45th bday and the entire restaurant sang happy birthday to him. That def adds to my fond memories. You order downstairs and then have to eat upstairs. Hmmmm. It didn't take long for my order to be ready. The burger was very good, but it was small. I could have (but didn't) eaten two of them.
