Greasy goodness, but with a hefty price tag. The fries are awesome, and the sauces are especially great for people like me who like to dunk or dip pretty much everything. The Milky Way shake is off the hook. I can't complain too much about this place, but wouldn't put it in the Burger Hall of Fame. Depending on when you get there, the lines can be atrocious. I have to admit, when Spike works the counter, things run a lot more efficiently, but other times it can be total chaos. Regarding the prices, if you can charge top dollar for your goods and people still form lines out the door, why stop? Spike has a good concept on his hands, and I think this place has a good amount of potential for improvement. I respect that they stick to the basics with regards to menu items, but also make an attempt to put an innovative spin on things. It's great for a junk food fix, but I couldn't see going here being a regular thing. Definitely worth checking out as an alternative to Five Guys, or Ray's Hell Burger. read more

It's good stuff to be sure and the fact that the main man is from top chef is definitely a plus but it's not one of those place that if you were visiting DC i'd insist you try out. But if you work nearby you should count yourself as lucky to have such a solid burger joint in the neighborhood. Their burgers aren't big but they're greasy and tender in the way that just makes you feel good. Despite the nice digs and various mayos (more on this in a moment) the food is decidedly unpretentious. My Obama Burger was a great combination of pungent cheese and sweet onion on potato bread. I really do think potato bread makes the best burgers too, it has that softness that just absorbs beefy grease. The fries, thyme and all, are actually sort of whatever but the choices of sauces, from old bay mayo, to mango mayo, to sriracha mayo really give you variety and sort of define the experience. I went with my friend on a Friday night around 7. I got the Obama burger which was incredible. The chipotle mayo was a big winner with my friend and I. The fries were awesome too. Lots of herbs on them and perfectly cooked. Best burger and fries I've had in a long time. But.....it was very loud and crowded. Definitely not a chill place to eat and hang out. It might have been better if we had eaten outside or taken it to go. Service was ok - we probably got our food within 10 minutes or so. Overall, I would definitely go back. It's that good. read more

I ordered a hamburger, turkey burger, village fries, and a marshmallow shake. The food was all delicious. The burger was moist and had a good helping of vegetables, but nothing super special about it; it was just a good burger. The fries were also done well, but again, nothing too special. One neat thing though is they have a six (?) sauces for the fries (or as sauces for the burger). I think they were: chipotle mayo, sriracha mayo, mango mayo, ketchup, mustard, and regular mayo. The turkey burger though was another story. That was very moist (really hard to find a turkey burger like that) and it had great flavor. my wife really loved it, and so did I. The marshmallow shake was delicious too. We think they must have used good quality ice cream to make it, but I wish there were more marshmallows (the only put one in mine). Meat was a little too well done for my taste, and there wasn't a single bit of veggies in my Obama burger. This probably isn't a bad thing for most people, but in a well done burger, I need the freshness and moistness of veggies. Came here for a business event. Brought several of my coworkers. Located in a cute area of town, this is the establishment owned by Spike Mendelsohn from Bravo's Season 4 of Top Chef. I appreciate he keeps it simple. Great burgers and fries, delicious shakes. My colleague practically got a food coma on the Roasted Marshmallow Shake alone. Too sweet for me, but it was a kick to watch him enjoy. He later went back for the peach shake. The place tends to get packed with a line that can run out the door so arrive early, grab a table and then order. My friends ordered all sorts of things: applewood bacon & cheese, avocado, chili etc. I loved their classic Farmhouse with tomatoes, onion. lettuce and pickles. sigh. A good burger with good simple ingredients is a treat. They have a turkey burger and even a vege option which I think is a mushroom with panko crumbs...but I was perfectly happy with the beef. I loved their fries and I appreciated that my colleagues shared their onion rings. I had no more meetings so I enjoyed a few. Highly recommended. read more

I've been here twice now... the first time i visited i had the blazin barn' i think it was a decent interpretation to a Vietnamese banh mi i can say that because i've had my fair share of them... although it didn't really have any contrasting textures..i also ordered spike's village fries these were okay i think there was a bit more rosemary then to my liking but then again rosemary is one of those spices that seems to overpower any flavor. But the thyme rosemary and sea salt didn't really enhance the fries as much as i thought they would it might be because the spices didn't really stick to the fries.. after awhile of consuming the fries it started to taste a bit like potpourri. I also ordered a mini toasted marshmallow shake. The shake was a very good consistency it had a medium thickness. The flavor was pretty spot on to actually consuming a marshmallow. I think the only negative thing i have to say about it was i wish that the marshmallow garnish was a bit more toasted. Today I visited again with a few friends and ordered the Coletti's Smokehouse burger with a side of Cliff's Homegrown Vidalia onion petals. The burger was just as juicy and delicious as the other burger that i had tried.The cheese didn't overpower the meat and the BBQ sauce was tangy sweet and a little smokey. The bacon was crispy so it added a different contrast. The onion ring i think sort of got lost in the burger since it didn't have a crispy texture. The Onion petals...batter was nicely spiced however the soggy texture made it slightly unappetizing and not to mention the batter separated form the onion itself and it made it harder to eat. Overall i have to agree with that the pricing of the burgers is a bit overly priced for some items i understand that you are paying for good quality ingredients which don't come cheap but for the size of the onion petals i gotta say 3.49 is a bit expensive for the quality and quantity that i got. Would i return? Probably would.. to try other things on the menu...but i would probably avoid the onion petals. Sidenote: the Chipotle mayo is awesome :o) read more

There always seems to be a huge line here. I guess because they cook the burgers to order. I checked this place out obviously because it is Spike's joint. Been a big fan of his ever since he appeared on Top Chef and butchered his tomahawks like it was just a walk in the park. I opted to get a regular farmhouse burger; although i regretted not getting the cheese after i ordered it. The burger came with lettuce tomato red onion and good stuff sauce. The burger was juicy, but it seemed quite pricey. I think i prefer a shack burger (sorry to say). The specialty burgers looked amazing and mouth watering, but i wasn't that hungry when i stopped by here which is why i opted for the plain old burger. I also got it with a side of Spike's Village Fries. The fries were very greasy and soggy. I wish they were crisper. The thyme and rosemary added little flavor to the fries. I should have just opted for the regular sea salted fries. The key to the fries were the dipping sauces they offered at the "dipping bar" i forget which they offered here but i took an assortment and all of them were really good. I hear the shakes here are spectacular, but I didn't get to try any. Overall, the burger was okayyyy, nothing great about it. The burger was fresh, but I mean the price you pay and the wait you have to wait 1st on line and then while waiting for your order can be annoying. The fries are too greasy, and reminds me of a soggier version of five guys fries. I actually prefer the crispiness of the five guys fries. However, the dipping sauces are legit. The good stuff sauce? My husband and I are big fans of Top Chef so when we were in town recently fo a race this was the first stop after got into town. This is not a sit down restaurant by any means and is a pretty standard burger and fries place - tables are upstairs where you sit after you grab your burger and fries. They were doing a brisk business for a Friday in April. I did not feel rushed in ordering my food. Husband got the Obama burger and I got the Michelle Melt (subbed beef patty for turkey per another patrons recommendation). While we waited we grabbed a seat upstairs but we did not have to wait long for or order. Even better was the dipping sauces - not just your standard ketchup, mustad and relish but some mayonaise based sauces (old bay, mango, and chipolte). Was not a fan of the old bay but the mango was AWESOME. I had read some reviews about the size of the burgers and I will have to agree that for the price that we paid - I expected a slightly larger patty. We got fries (husband got the regular and I got the ones with thyme and sea salt). I would have wished the fries were crispier but the fresh thyme and sea salt made up for it. I came here for the first time when my family made the trip over from California to drop me off at uni. Since that fateful day two years ago, I still dream about the experience. I leapt at the opportunity to chaperone the pre-college kids on their field trip to our nation's capitol with one thought dominating my head "VIETNAMESE COFFEE MILKSHAAAKE." Dragged three of my friends the 1.5 miles from drop-off location to Good Stuff Eatery. Despite their complaints, all agreed upon first bite that the walk was well worth it. Rating Breakdown: 2/2 Stars for Taste: I am a huge fan of bacon so I've tried both the Prez Obama Burger and the Colletti's Smokehouse. The onion marmalade on the Prez Obama lends a touch of sweetness to the burger. Still, I'm not a fan of Roquefort cheese. My favorite is still the Colleti's Smokehouse because I LOVE their chipotle BBQ sauce. Do not leave this place without ordering some of their fries. Even though the fries can be a bit soggy, the rosemary, thyme, and sea salt have be licking the bag when I'm done, not to mention the array of mayos (sriracha, old bay, mango, chipotle) available for your dipping pleasure. My friend was born and raised in Maryland and she was practically eating that Old Bay mayo by itself. (shudder) I'm not a fan of mayo, but even I find the sauces tolerable. Still, naked or full-on mayo clad, these fries are the bomb-diggety, yo. I caved this past trip and decided to try their Vietnamese coffee milkshake. AMAZING. I don't generally like chewing my drinks, but the little flecks of coffee grounds on the top really complimented the more subtle taste of creamy coffee in the shake itself. Also, the milkshakes at Good Stuff Eatery are "Omg, I can't suck this up without getting a hernia" thick, none of that watery garbage. I can't wait to come back and try the toasted marshmallow. 1/1 Stars for Value: People often ask me how Good Stuff Eatery compares to In-N-Out. I always reply that these two are in completely different categories. Good Stuff Eatery sells some gourmet stuff; it's like asking me to compare Chili's and McDonald's. They're clearly not striving for the same results. Anyways, expect to pay a little less than $10 for a burger (with tax). I took advantage of the combo deals they have and added a mini shake + snack fries to my burger for an extra $6. Considering the shake itself would have been $5.45, it was a good deal. 1/1 Star for Customer Service: The only human encounter you get is at the cash register. Still, Good Stuff Eatery is nothing but efficient. You order at the register, get a buzzer, and spend the next 15 minutes looking for seating. By the time you've found seating, the buzzer goes off, and you're good to gorge! $15 is a little more than I'd usually spend for a burger and shake, but bonus star because I'd say Good Stuff Eatery is definitely somewhere I will find myself every time I visit DC. The lines can get a bit long if you try to visit during peak hours. I usually go around 2-ish and the lines take less than 15 minutes. You know a place will be good if multiple people tell you to eat there while on your trip. This place definitely exceeded my expectations! I'm from Texas, so you would think my standards for burgers are very high, and Good Stuff definitely makes the top 5 best burgers ever. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the burgers are smaller than you would expect. The fries are very good- not too crunchy, not too soft. Just fabulous. The pumpkin pie shake was the best pumpkin pie shake ever. Apparently this place is known for good shakes because 3/4 of the people in there had one, but I fell in love with the pumpkin. It had pieces of pie crust in it too....mmmm.... You can get a burger, fries, and a shake for $10-11- a very good deal, especially in DC! I went to good stuff eatery about a month ago and it dawned on me that I hadn't written a review. I was looking forward to trying this place after hearing rave reviews. It didn't hurt that Spike, one of my fav Top Chef contestants, was the face behind the restaurant. I ordered the mushroom melt and an order of fries. I can't remember what my husband ordered. The burgers were pricy but that was to be expected, we were helped right away and didn't have to wait long for our food. That's why the location got 3 stars. Our burgers were so saturated with grease that you couldn't taste any of the ingredients and couldn't stomach to finish our burgers. The fries were the same also, cold, soggy and dry. Great food , better sauces and good, fast efficient service! I go here at least once a week. Try the shroom burger wrapped in lettuce. It is absolutely amazing! During peak hours I recommend going to their sister store right next door "We the Pizza" all of their pizza is amazing but the shroom is the best. Good Stuff Eatery is close to the Capitol, and we somehow ended up here for dinner. This place is known for their burgers and shakes. If ordering the combo with your burger, there is enough fries for two people. It was cool to have the dipping bar with 4 types of mayo (ie: mayo, Sriracha, Chipotle). We ordered the following: - 'Shroom Burger with muenster and chedder stuffed portabello, flash fried with panko crust, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and pickle. Also ordered combo with fries and berry shake. Loved this burger since the cheese was inside with the mushroom. The berry shake was pretty yummy. - Steakhouse Burger with cremini mushrooms, onion straws, swiss cheese, and steakhouse mayo. Also ordered combo with fries and strawberry shake. My husband loved this burger since he is a huge fan of mushrooms. With the burger and combo, our meal came out to be around $13 each, which isn't too bad considering the amount of fries and the yummy food. One improvement is to get better hamburger buns. Came here on a Friday afternoon during the lunch rush. The line was nearly out the door, but moved fairly quickly. I ordered the Colletti's Smokehouse burger and my wife ordered the Good Stuff Melt. I was intrigued by the marshmallow milkshake, and saw someone walking away with one, and it was topped with two large toasted marshmallows. I had to order it... The food didn't take long to be ready. By the time we got our soda and god settled-in upstairs, our pager rang. My burger had a good size and was not only juicy but had a good amount of condiments and toppings. It was delicious, and so was my wife's burger. We decided to cut our burgers in half and go halfsies with each other, since both were so good. The fries had a nice seasoning which made them taste more interesting than regular fries. At the condiment station, they have several different types of mayonnaise with different flavors. I'm don't like mayo, but they caught my eye, and I got a few of them to sample. Our favorite was the chipotle mayo. Now, onto the shake... my wife was very skeptical, first saying that I wasn't going to like a marshmallow shake because, well, it was going to taste like pure marshmallows (ughh... that's *why* I ordered it!), and then she said that for $5, it better be really good. I tasted it and really liked it. She tasted it, and broke down and admitted that it was really good. I wouldn't say it just tastes like straight-up marshmallow, but something like tahitian vanilla. It was really good, and my wife ended-up drinking about a third of the shake. We wish we had a burger place like this one back home, because it's a great place to splurge (calorie-wise) on a nicer burger (than Five Guys) for a reasonable price. read more

So while in DC visiting a friend, I made mention that I wanted to stop by Spike Mendelson's burger joint just to try the toasted Marshmallow shake alone. Well, when it came time to even think about going to the eateries on my list, I couldn't remember any of them and I couldn't find the email, so I said oh well. Well, low and behold, we randomly stumble into this restaurant for lunch. We were near the Capitol building and the Library of Congress and needed to get lunch. Nevermind that it was steamy raining (thank you 100+ degrees + humidity and thunder storms) we followed all the office people down this street to try and find a lunch place. burgers, sure why not. As soon as I walked in, I knew. What else than a gigantic picture of the toasted marshmallow milkshake on the menu. I got myself a regular burger and the sweet onion petals. The burger was decent. I can see that it was fresh ground beef and other ingredients. Is it the best burger I had? no. I've definitely have had better.... but the petals were quite yummy. I like that there are options for mayos to put on your burger. Afterwards I went back for a shake. found out you can get a kids size shake in any flavor that they do. Obviously - I had to get the toasted marshmallow one. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't really taste like marshmallows, but it was a good thick shake. I would totally try Milky Way Malt. That just looked crazy good. The line wasn't crazy, granted we were there towards the end part of lunch, but not too late. It was still lunch time during the week during the summer. The people working were great There isn't a ton of seating, this is downtown DC afterall. There are a few barstools on the main floor, with most of the seating upstairs. Probably one of the best veggie burgers I've had.. EVER. I opted not to go with a meat patty, but instead ordered The Obama with the organic portobello tops stuffed in muenster and cheddar cheese. I'm glad I did cause the burger was on point and straight up delicious. The portobello definitely makes it. You also can't eat a burger here without trying their fries which were just as good! My only gripe is that the burgers are a bit pricey especially for the size.. I was seriously suprised on how small they were. It was all good though cause the taste and quality of the burger made up for it. Went here based on a recommendation from my congressman's intern (apparently Paul Cook loves the place too). The toasted marshmallow shake really was authentic--wow! They gave us free tasters of it, perhaps as a "sorry" gift for messing up our order earlier. The salted caramel kiss shake was ok, and the Oreo shake was alright but not great. The shakes are SO filling. I got a small one and couldn't even finish half of it after I'd finished my burger, so I'd wait to order shakes till after the meal. Their other flavors include red velvet, black and white, Vietnamese coffee, and others. Each burger is about $7 without tax. You have the option to "Cluck It" with any burger, meaning you can change any burger's patty to be chicken for free. I got the Free Range Turkey Burger. I'm not picky, but I have to say the avocado was disgusting. It was mushed up and spread like a sauce, it was hot and brown, and it tasted old and bitter. It almost ruined the whole burger for me, but I spread their mango sauce all over it (which doesn't taste like mango--it tastes like a version of honey mustard), I loved it again. They messed up 2 out of 7 of our burgers, but they quickly fixed it once we pointed it out. They didn't mark the burgers well at all--just a scribble on the wrappers to leave you guessing whose burger was whose. In fairness, all of the 6 people I came with loved their burgers. The fries were very good, but we didn't have any room to eat them because the burgers were big. I'd love to come again and get a burger without avocado. The eating area is upstairs (along with the bathrooms), they have a couple TVs (that were showing the World Cup), and there's a charging station with medium-sized ledges so you can charge all your electronics while you eat. PROS: Great (big) burgers and fries, yummy mango sauce, authentic toasted marshmallow shake, fair prices, "Cluck It" option, charging station upstairs, bathrooms, TVs, easy walking distance from the House of Representatives. CONS: Nasty avocado, they messed up 2 of our burgers, they didn't label our burgers so we couldn't tell what was what, mediocre caramel and Oreo shakes. Too many flaws for 5 stars, but I'd recommend the place to my friends, so I have to give it 4 stars. read more

My wife has been wanting to go here. The first time wasn't great because the hunger just wasn't tasty and one of the ingredients just didn't suit well with our taste buds so I didn't write a review at first because we wanted to give it another chance. So we did. And we're still disappointed. It's only getting three stars because the shakes are amazing. Both times we were here, the wait was too long. After getting our burgers and tasting them, the wait was definitely not worth it. The cashier doesn't ask you how you want your burger so you get it as is. As is meaning still pink and a little bit bloody. I don't have anything against that for my steak. However I like my burgers well done. The burger and fries were also very greasy. The atmosphere is modern and for the most part clean. The staff was friendly. The service was quick, I ordered a chocolate shake and a bacon burger. The shake was out in less than 5 minutes, the burger less than 10. The problem? It very much looked like someone had made the burger, put it in the bag, and then sat on it, it was the flattest burger I have ever seen. It was also quite small and over cooked (I was not asked how I wanted it done, well done seems to be the standard). Now, there are a couple of strikes against this place which I will quickly outline. 1) Grease: My Obama burger was tasty, but dang, it was saturated in grease. The fries were overwhelmingly greasy and limp, onion petals greasy. 2) Seasoning: It seems that Good Stuff Eatery may have been running short on salt and other seasonings and were rationing what they had left. This place is awesome! Lines are long but move fairly quickly. I ordered a Good Stuff Melt and Village Fries for under $10. They then hand you a beeper to know when your food is ready. After a short wait I pick up my order and dig in only to realize its not exactly what I ordered. Instead, I got a smokehouse burger but didn't mind because it was great, nonetheless. The Highlight has got to be their dipping sauces. Sriracha mayo and mango mayo were incredible! I'd definitely come back when I'm in town. read more

After deciding I like Spike now (he was kind of a tool on his Top Chef season, but seems like a cool guy on the Life After show)...I thought it would be good to check out his place while in DC visiting friends. The place is very casual, order at the bar, get a beeper, go get your food when you beep. Easy enough. We came at like 2:00 on a Sunday, and the place was rather empty. I am assuming they are much busier during the week with the all the workers from the area. I ordered the Prez Obama burger (partly in support and partly because it sounded the best!). It had Applewood Bacon, Onion Marmalade, Roquefort Cheese & Delicious Horseradish Mayo Sauce and was $7. The burgers were cheap compared to the new "gourmet LA burgers" that we now have to pay like $15 for. BUT, the burger was pretty small, and didn't come with fries, so it's probably all the same. Obama was delicious! The onion marmalade was super tasty, and pared well with all the other stuff. There was enough interesting stuff going on without overwhelming the taste of the burger, which I feel happens a lot lately. I'd give the burger 4 stars. The fries, however, were terrible. :( I was so looking forward to the Spike's Village Fries: Topped with Fresh Thyme, Rosemary & Sea Salt. They idea was great, but the execution sucked. The fries were cold, and clumpy, and soggy. It was really quite sad. The seasoning would've been so great on GOOD fries, but these weren't fresh or fried right. Sigh. They did have a cool "dipping" bar...with different mayos (chipotle mayo, sriracha mayo, etc) and LOTS of ketchup. :) All in all, decent burger place. read more

I like this place in theory. The menu looks good. I didn't try the burgers. But the fries were missing the promised spices (I ordered the "village" fries) and the shakes we ordered just tasted like vanilla ice cream. If I order a berry shake, I'd think Spike could make it actually taste like berry, no? The oreo shake was so thick that it required a spoon. So, meh. For well-sourced burgers and nice shakes, I prefer Elevation Burger. read more

Should've known there was much more reasonable local options east of the Capitol. The burgers here are very good, with good quality of the meat, buns and pretty much everything else. The burgers are very juicy, medium in the center, considering that it is reasonable for a burger. The fries were tasty, but it was soggy and full of moisture. There is lot of variety when it comes to the mayo; in addition to the usual ketchup and mustard, there was sriracha, old bay, chipotle, and mango mayonnaises to dip our fries in. The service was efficient and great, with an interior emphasizing their local roots. The place is also great at its location; even though there is a lack of street parking, it is good for foot traffic. Might come here again if I'm in the area, looking for a quick lunch. read more

Overall good fries (rosemary & thyme) and Turkey burger, but both were on the salty side. If they tone down the sodium, the food would taste better. Also, they don't (and should) offer lettuce burgers....well they don't offer them via Door Dash anyway. read more

I was not overly impressed with this restaurant. The hamburgers were delicious though so I will give them that. However the fries were a bit soggy and over fried. I think they purposely make fries soggy so perhaps some people enjoy soggy fries. The prices were average. Not the best but not too gross either read more

I've been going to good stuff since it opened. It was great at first. The burgers were never my favorite but they were good enough and the village fries and shakes kept me coming back for more. But the last few times I've gone the village fries have had no village on them. Do they not offer them anymore? They're still on the menu. And their regular fries are gross. I keep going back in search of the original greatness but it hasn't been there. I hope it comes back. read more

I came here on a Saturday morning. The place opens at 11:30 and we showed up a few minutes before and there was already a line forming. The owner showed up around 11:42 and yelled at the staff who hadn't started taking orders yet. And when I say yell, I mean he joked with them about being slow and to get a move on! I ordered the Obama burger that comes with sauteed onions with a horseradish sauce and blue cheese crumbles. My one complaint is that my bun got soggy from all the burger juice. If there is one thing I can't stand it's soggy food. I made my way around it and devoured my sandwich. I wish that the milkshake menu was more prominent because I didn't see it! I guess I must return ;-) I really enjoyed the fries and the dipping sauce. I will eat anything that comes with sauce to dip it in. Delicious. I had a great experience and I would definitely recommend showing up early. When we left the place was packed! read more
