Loved it! Hands down so good!!! We walked took the subway and then walked again and it was worth the walk with kids in tow. We got the cookies and cream shake - yum The toasted marshmallow shake that was awesome. It really truly tasted like camp fire. It was so strange yet so good. I don't get it! The toasted mallow was great! In June they make a peach shake and grill a peach to go on top! Pretty tasty! Got the sunny side burger and I was licking the paper. The bun....my gosh. It is so good compared to Utah bread. I don't get it. The meat was perfect and the egg oozed perfect. My little one took my bacon so I'm not a good judgment for the bacon. Hubby got the huge bacon double patty! It was huge! We ordered a side of fries. Way to much! 3 people couldn't finish the side of fries and they were pretty burnt. This was possibly the worst burger joint experience I've had in the past five years. For starters, I waited 25 minutes for a fast casual burger (!). When it finally arrived the fries were so soggy they literally looked like they'd been dunked in water. And the temperature matched that impression. The burger bun was equally soggy. Just awful. Then there was the cookie that reminded me I should just bake my own. So hard in spots I had to break pieces off and liter the ground. Glad I know that I should stick with any of the litany of other options in the area. read more

My FAVE burger place in DC. EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD! You have to get Spike's Village Fries with all the different dipping sauces. The Mango Mayo is my favourite but the new Chipotle Mayo is awesome too. All of their milkshakes are good. They do a special "Flavor of the Month" so there's always something new to try. Everythings freshly made and if you're lucky, you can even find Chef Spike out on the grill flipping burgers. There's not a ton of seating so make sure to snag a table when you find it! The only downside is the mad cravings that you get whenever you're not there. ;) read more

My first visit to Good Stuff in awhile, I came solo for a quick bite pre-theater nearby at the Folger. I used to come here for lunch frequently when I worked on Capitol Hill, but don't make it up here as often any more. It is still as I remember, the burgers are perfectly good better than fast food burgers, greasy and juicy and delicious, and the fries are twice-fried and super flavorful, not quite soggy, but neither are they crispy. The fries are definitely best still hot, so eat them first, your burger will be just as good after you finish your fries. A good burger if you're in the neighborhood, but honestly, not a destination to travel for. read more

The long version, I wasn't as dissatisfied with the burger because of its size (which is kind of an issue) or its patty-to-bun ratio (which is also an issue), but overall knowing that for something very similar at other nearby burger chains, you can almost get two of what eat. There's only one word I can think of to describe the food here: soggy. The burgers are drenched in sauce, the buns are mushy as a result, and the fries are flaccid and clumpy. It's like everything has been streamed in the microwave, not crisped in a fryer or grilled. Really disappointing. If you like quality burgers and fries, go elsewhere. This place is a like a more independent, hip version of Shake Shack. Burgers, check. Milkshakes, check. The milkshake to get of course is the toasted marshmallow, and you should definitely get this - it was AMAZING. Nice and thick, creamy, and with two big marshmallows floating on top. The burger that gets all the hype is the Obama burger, but frankly I found it to be so-so. It became way too oily, due to the meat, oily onions, and the cheese they used. I was disappointed. The taste of the ingredients also didn't wow. Try a different burger instead. One tip is that they do have a "meal deal" - but in small print next to the burger menu on the board. You can get a burger + small fries + small milkshake! It does come up to $16, which is not cheap, but definitely worth trying at least once. read more

For one this place is bringing in the $$$ as it was super crowded on a Saturday. Crowded to the point you had to fight to get a place to sit and eat. Now on to the food...it didn't take long for the food to get ready. Considering what you pay for a got a raw meat patty with what I thought would be plenty of toppings..these guys are stingy. The taste of the burger I thought would be out of this world...to put it straight to the point it tasted like a frozen hamburger patty you can buy from dollar tree. It was the worst and most tasteless burger I think I had maybe this whole year or past decade. Nothing was memorable as I also tried their milkshake which was overpriced and frankly I felt that McDonald's shakes are more tasty. Fries are also something huge at a burger joint, again these guys missed the mark by serving stale and oily fries. Overall you will pay for the overhyped crap it gets for being well known spot. You won't be paying for good food or a nice ambience. I cringe at the thought of this place. When you're in DC, you must eat all of the American staples which has to include a BURGER of some shape or form. Good Stuff Eatery has a mix of options from beef, turkey and chicken with permutations of toppings and cheeses. Get the napkins ready because these burgers take both hands to eat and are downright messy. The GOOD STUFF BURGER had what looked to be about a 1/3 lb. beef patty, melted cheddar and muenster, caramelized onions and mushrooms (not very noticeable). The meat was cooked to medium and sandwiched between a whole lot of artery clogging goodness and a soft potato-like bun (yellowish hue). The MICHELLE MELT is a turkey patty with caramelized onions, swiss cheeses and standard lettuce and tomatoes with an herb aioli in a wheat bun. The turkey patty was probably the most moist preparation that I've ever eaten with my primary frame of reference being B.Goode. The fries were OK... a bit limp and greasy but served their purpose to scoop up the tasty assortment of dipping sauces. I'd go light on the fries; perhaps share a small order among two. The burgers are decently thick but aren't overly big in terms of circumference. You will definitely feel full after consuming a burger, but it isn't so large that you think the task at hand is impossible to finish. Enjoy feasting on this 'merican classic! read more

I was really disappointed. The applewood bacon burger was fine a bit small, kinda greasy but decent. The fries, well they simply sucked! Limp, greasy and came in a clumpy mess. The side condiments were good but it really didn't make up for the greasy fries! There is no excuse on earth for soggy fries! I would have given 1 star but strawberry lemonade was really good. It's a shame, but for the price I would prefer to go to Lark Burger (Edwards, Colorado original) or even better SmashBurger (there rosemary parmigiana fries are crispy with Killer flavor!). read more

Ate here for lunch on August 9. I ordered a fountain drink, but all of the soda choices were just running clear with soda water. I told the guy at the counter, and he told me the water still works, but they couldn't fix the sodas at the moment. I asked if I could get a refund, and he told me I needed the cup, so I dug it out of the trash to give to him. At that time, he offered to replace with bottles of soda instead, which I accepted. I noticed that the entire time I was there, they continued selling sodas despite being aware that the soda was out. I got my burger, but it was undercooked (cold red center). I took it to the guy at the counter, and he asked me if I wanted to keep it or throw it away. He did not offer to replace it, so I asked if he would either make me a new one or refund me. He agreed to make a new one. While I was waiting at the counter for my replacement, several other people approached the counter with issues. Also, I was charged a 5% COVID surcharge. Before visiting DC, one of our friends recommended this place for us to go eat after visiting the Capitol and the Library of Congress. This place is just a short walk from there. The location itself is next to a beautiful neighborhood. They have a pretty simple menu and will gladly help you decide on what to get if it's your first time. I decided to go with the Prez Obama burger, Village fries and the Toasted Marshmallow shake. I fell in love right away. The Prez Obama burger can be a bit greasy but if you don't mind that too much it may make your top burgers list. The fries were pretty heavily seasoned but are easy to shake some of it off depending on how you like it. And to finish off the tasty meal I had the life changing Toasted Marshmallow shake. The consistency is a rare shake consistency, it is a smooth and creamy shake with an amazing flavor. My wife and I still talk about this shake and would come to Good Stuff Eatery just for this shake. I held off on writing this review for about two months. You see, I didn't have a burger made with beef when I was here with the Burger Brigade. I figured I'd review it after I'd gone a second time and ordered a "real" burger. But ever since that one and only visit, I've had absolutely no desire to go back, and I realized that was indicative enough of the place to warrant a review after all. I got a mushroom burger, and it was just okay. Nothing special, but certainly passable, and was just the right size. The onion rings (more like onion chips, as they weren't actually ring shaped) were quite good by comparison, very fresh and sweet, with just the right amount of batter. I had a bite of Cadence's village fries, and as has been mentioned in other reviews, were way, way overseasoned (and not even thoroughly... the top portion was almost caked in seasoning, while the ones at the bottom of the bag were unseasoned). The price for a burger, onion rings and a Yuengling? Almost $20. For that price, I'd like to think they threw in some of those mushrooms that enable you to have vivid conversations about Pope Alexander the VI's Line of Demarcation with your wallpaper. Or like, what if our dreams are reality man, and like, reality is just a dream, man? The verdict: I had a devil of a time writing this review. There just wasn't anything noteworthy about it (one way or the other) to get fired up about. I never really bought into the cult of celebrity chefs either (as with Les Halles and Anthony Whassizname) and think that if you're a household (or at least recognizable) name, you're not going to be able to get away with subpar food for too long. "Spike opened up a burger place in DC did he?" Clearly I, Lord of the Cheeseburger, must go to his establishment and see if he does my favorite food item in the world justice, or if he brings it shame. After reading the reviews here, me and my band of merry fellows (and my awesome girlfriend who puts up with three guys acting like pro food critics when they're just good ol boys) headed to Good Stuff last night, a Tuesday, to see exactly what was going on for ourselves. Admittedly, my expectations were set low after reading about average burgers, soggy fries, long wait times for food, blaring music... I think that covers it... but yes, I had to see for myself if Spike failed the cheeseburger industry or not and this was the time. We parked on the street as soon as we got in the neighborhood, only a block away, so that was nice. (you'll have to excuse me, i get excited about finding parking spaces in less than 2 minutes in DC, then again, show me someone who doesn't) We went inside and the line was initially confusing for a second, but we got in and got to the cashier in 4-5 minutes. I placed my order for the farmhouse bacon, a farmhouse for my lady, spike's village fries for both of us, and a soft drink. The ordering process was simple, slick, and quick, no hang ups there for us. I was then handed my beeper and my receipt, which I noted the time as I wanted to see how many minutes we had to wait from placing our order to getting our food in our grubby paws. 8 minutes. I know some people were saying 20 minute wait times, and that's horrible, but our wait time was more than acceptable for me. Once our beeper went out I ran down stairs, grabbed our order and got some old bay mayo from the mayo bar and went back to our seat so I could examine the burger for myself, using time proven scientific methods.... and by that I mean I was going to inhale that bad boy and see what I thought. First tho, the fries. I dumped them out so me and my woman could share them, the amount of fries was the perfect size, not too many, but just right. They were seasoned well and cooked, nice and hot for our consumption. Upon tasting them I was very pleased, but WAIT, I do have one complaint. It's nitpicky, but it's still a small issue, and I mean that literally. The fries were cut kind of small, like they were 1/3 the length of a normal fry. Not the worst thing in the world, but I did end up eating the last bits of them with a fork, as dipping them in a sauce, whether it be ketchup or mayo, was just not possible by hand. and now it's burger time baby. Upon pulling mine out of the bag my mouth watered at the sight of the burger. It looked damn good to the eyes and I was all about sinking my fangs into it, but first, I applied a thin spread of old bay mayo to the crown of the bun. When I did do this, I noticed the thick cut bacon which only made my stomach roar with "FEED ME, FEED ME". My first bite into the burger was everything I expected it to be, the meat was flavorful and well seasoned, cooked just like it would be if you went to an outdoor cookout where the grillmaster knew his stuff. The bacon was just as good as it looked, and the mayo added an extra flavor that made it perfect. After halfway through the burger, I was glad that I came and definitely wanted to come back sometime in the future. I couldn't help but wonder if the initial reviews were just a part of the kinks of a new spot opening up, and that maybe I came at the perfect time after those have been worked out. Who knows really. But yes, Spike has done the art of the cheeseburger well and I would recommend Good Stuff Eatery to anyone, without a doubt. read more

BEST BURGERS IN DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So... this place has gotten a lot of hype in the last couple of months because its Exec Chef is Spike from Bravo's "Top Chef". Regardless of what you think of the show or Spike's hilarious personality, you've got to visit this family-run burger joint in SE near the Capitol South Metro stop. Ok, not only are the burgers TO DIE FOR (try the Colletti's Smokehouse or the Farmhouse) but the Village Fries and Onion Rings are ridiculous. We also had some milk shakes that were perfectly smooth and thick at the same time. To end the meal, we had some ridiculously delicious oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, What?! I wish I had a glass of milk to go with them:) Just wait for the custards and other desserts to become available!! Good Stuff Eatery's ambience is equally enjoyable: trendy enough - the floors are beautiful and the color palette is bright and vibrant- but mellow and down to earth enough for a burger joint. There is ample room for groups of friends to chow on delicious food upstairs and nice standing bars to eat a quick burger in the front of the first floor. My favorite is the big dining table upstairs in the windows for a small groups. AND, there are enough tables outside on the street that I can bring my pooch for an afternoon meal without worrying about where to tie him up:) I loved it. Spike Mendelsohn and his family were warm and inviting and this place is sure to succeed. Having moved out of Capitol Hill just before this place opened, I was happy to finally get a reason to travel across town and check it out. The reason? Watching Top Chef!! (Because I have no cable!!) Seeing as how it was 10pm, I opted for a smaller fourth meal and split the 5 napkin burger with my girl. We were going to split the toasted marshmallow shake too, but then we saw the orange creamsicle and had to grab that as well. Let's start with the meat of things, the burger. It was damn, damn good. Maybe I'll side-by-side it with Five Guys for a taste-test showdown in the future, but for now let me say it was big and tasty. Eggs and bacon were hitting the spot. Now the creamsicle shake was great, hard to screw that up, but the real star was the toasted marshmallow shake. They nailed the taste perfectly. It starts with a sugary taste in your mouth and finishes with a smokey, campfire smell in your nose. Awesome. My only gripe is that they should offer them in smaller sizes!! They are some rich shakes and I feared for a Type-2 onset. Now, I'm not calling anyone out, but I was amazed to see one star reviews for this place. I figure one star would be warranted if Spike came up and knocked the burger out of your mouth and pissed in your shake. Quite the contrary, he bought everyone a beer! But I'm not one to have my Yelp review influenced by freebies. Before the free round, I had already rated this place 4 stars. It's got a decent atmosphere and good food. The prices might be a touch high, but sharing a burger or a shake will fix that problem right up. Sometimes I read Yelp reviews and think people are deranged. The overwhelming theme of all Good Stuff reviews is that it's too expensive, burgers too small, burgers not Five Guys-ish enough. Oh DC, will you get over 5 Guys?! And have you ever heard of "portion control?" If you think your meal at Good Stuff is too small, I can recommend a few OA meetings. After meeting Spike at the Top Chef tour, I felt increasingly inclined to try his outpost. He seems like a great guy- I like his blog on the Good Stuff website. It's amazing how successful people can become overnight in this age of reality television. I'm sure he's worked hard and his resume is exceptional, but it certainly helps to have the exposure of Top Chef. Anyhow, I was always deterred away from Good Stuff due to the low-ish overall Yelp rating. If I'm going to be eating gut-busting grub, I want it to be the most delicious, "worth it," heavenly experience and 3 stars was not convincing. But after meeting Spike and dreaming of toasted marshmallow shakes, I decided a good compromise would be to walk there (from my home in Adams Morgan) so if the food sucked, at least I would have burned some calories beforehand. We ordered 2 smokehouse burgers, a classic wedge salad, an order of the plain fries, and 2 shakes: vanilla and toasted marshmallow. Although the wedge wasn't really a "wedge," it had classic wedge flavors and was good. The burgers were really tasty and the patties on the thicker side. The "smallness" of the burger may be related to its thickness... a lot of places' big burgers seem to sacrifice width for circumference. My only gripe about the burger is that it was a bit overcooked (medium well), despite my request for MR. The fries were good- not too greasy, but heavily salted. If I don't gain 15 lbs overnight from water retention, it'll be a miracle. The shakes, which seem to be unanimously enjoyed, were also good. I tried the toasted marshmallow since I can get other flavors elsewhere; it was good, but I'd probably not order it again... I prefer black and white shakes. My boyfriend loved the vanilla. Unfortunately, our shakes were made right after we ordered and the food took over 10 minutes, so I got to watch our shakes melting on the counter. And they tasted melted, which was a letdown. Which brings me to my only substantive complaint: the service. The workers are slow and not as efficient as I'd expect. As some other reviews have stated, no employee seems to have a single duty, so they're all sort of milling around. It does not engender confidence. Our food took 10 minutes and it was very unbusy. Also, they pack ALL meals to go- even if you are eating there. And then they emphasize conservation of resources. I have a tip: don't pack everyone's food in plastic and paper bags! It cheapens the experience and is wasteful. Plus, it can compromise the flavor and texture of food to place it in a little sauna-like bag while they wait for your order to be complete. Anyhow, a few kinks need to be worked out. Efficiency in fast food is a must and time management is essential. But the food is good- slightly expensive (if they want to charge so much, you shouldn't receive your food in a paper bag and have to bus your own table)- yet enjoyable.
