Because of the plethora of in depth reviews I'll keep things brief. The burger is disappointingly small for a place that wants over $7 for just a burger without much in the way of extras. That said, it is definitely a tasty piece of meat, but in no way does it stand out in the sea of burgers this city has now. The way I looked at it, it was around the size of a Five Guys burger (which is obviously much cheaper) but in no way did I jump up and down and say this was better or worth the price difference. Fries were good (mine were right out of the frier). Shake was good as many, many others have said. All and all, it tastes good, but for 10 bucks a burger better, and this doesn't stand out in this city. One other factor is the place is a complete tour mobile stop now and if I hear one more tourist say "oh my god it's the top chef guy,"... well I'm not really going to do anything other than gripe on the internet - and I guess it's good that tourists are going into new parts of town. read more

I got the bacon cheddar burger, my girl got some kind of onion and mushroom burger, we got one large fries to split and 2 waters (free). Total cost = $20. Fuck. That. Get our food pretty quick ~ 10 min or so. Should be pretty hot for only 10 min right? My burger is very luke warm, and as others have reported, smashed together pretty well. It's also pretty goddamn greasy, which is ok for fast food, but not $20 fast food. Girl's burger came out in a similar state. I understand that are a lot of obese people who crave this shit, but I don't look forward to having a small river of grease flow out of my food whenever I pick it up. The fries were ok, but again, more warm that hot, and greasier than I think handcut, "freshly made" fries outta be. Was referred her by a staffer during a recent visit to the Capitol and it was dynamite. Exactly what we were looking for :) Nothing fancy but awesome food. Hands down the best burger I ever had and the milkshake was amazing. I also ordered the onion petals - their version of the onion ring and they too exceeded my expectations. very casual dining. Toasted marshmallow milkshake. Do it. Brilliant decision. I guess since I'm a med student, I should encourage you not to be a total glutton and get the kiddy size. It might delay that MI a tad. I joke. But seriously, delicious. The burgers here are also my fave in town. And despite the fact that I'm a petite South Asian with a normal BMI, I KNOW MY BURGERS. No, I don't want a salad. I want the Good Stuff Melt with village fries and a toasted marshmallow milkshake. Fine, I'll kiddy-size that. Clearly, I highly recommend this joint. It's usually busy, but the line moves somewhat quickly and there's pretty good turnover on the tables upstairs and outside. I know it's all the way over near the Capitol, but it's worth it. Do it. Staying near the convention center with my three teenagers, I asked what they felt like eating for dinner. One said hamburgers, and I knew just where to go. I have been re-watching season 4 of Top Chef on which Spike Mendelsohn appears, and last year I had a good experience at We The Pizza. So, we walked to the far side of the capitol to Good Stuff Eatery. Unfortunately, on the whole it was a disappointing experience. First, the food. Positives: the menu is simple and straightforward which aids in ordering in a busy restaurant near the capitol. The prices are also fair for city dining. My son had a bacon cheeseburger, fries, and root beer float for about $13 - or what it usually costs to take him to 5 Guys. There was a dipping bar that had some sauces in addition to ketchup like mango, chipotle, and old bay. These were a nice, surprising compliment to the French fries. I ordered the "Blazin' Barn" burger which was topped with picked daikon and carrots, mint, cilantro, thai basil, and a spicy mayo. I loved this combination as the picked veg and herbs complimented the fatty and salty burger really well. Warning: I don't know if it was on purpose or not - the menu doesn't say, although it should if it was on purpose - but the burgers were all cooked to a light medium rare (very pink on the inside). That is how I would order a burger myself given a choice, but my kids were a bit put off by this. If you or your kids don't like a pink middle burger, I would ask for it to be cooked to medium or higher. Negatives: I had some issues with the food. The fries were a soggy mess, like they were using the fryer too much and the oil temperature had dropped so there was no crispiness to the fries - just absorbed all the oil. We had some confusion when we opened the burgers because one son had bacon cheeseburger and the other just a cheeseburger, but there was a stray piece of bacon stuck to the outside of one bun for some unknown reason. And the staff the night we meant did not know how to make a root beer float, apparently. When I came to get the food, I asked the woman behind the counter about my root beer float. And then I saw another woman holding a cup overflowing with foam over the sink. She sort of shrugged her shoulders and put the cup and half a bottle of root beer on the plate, with no acknowledgment or apology or anything. My son said it was the worst root beer float he had ever had. How do you screw up a root beer float? This points to what was really disappointing was the service. Quotes on the wall talk about Good Stuff Eatery being about good people and good times, but the experience with the staff was far from that. When I got to the register, I was not greeted. Not only no words, but no smile and hardly any eye contact as the cashier kept looking off to her side at something. Not surprisingly, when I told her I was going to have 3 orders on one charge and 1 on another, she didn't hear me and so I had to ask again to order a 4th burger, getting the expected unhappy expression. Handed my two receipts and pagers with no thanks. I get a better reception at my local 5 Guys. I can't complain about the prices, especially for DC, but considering the terrible attitude of the staff and the fails on some of the food, it was no value at all. Definitely not "good stuff." We all left the restaurant and walked by We the Pizza and said we should have gone there instead. I might give the place another try since my particular burger was so good, but there are a lot of choices in DC so maybe not. While visiting DC, I wanted to check this restaurant out. Good Stuff Eatery is one a a growing empire of eateries owned by Chef/Impresario Spike Mendehlson, a tireless self-promoter who was a fan favorite on "Top Chef". In the interest of Full disclosure, I must say I was never impressed by him, concluding that he was more style than substance, and kept in the competition longer than he should've been because he was 'good TV'. So the question becomes: Good Stuff Eatery - Does the food live up to the hype? WHO SHOULD GO: Easily-starstruck people who want to bask in the reflected glow of celebrity by dining at a place owned by a 'celebrity' chef. WHO SHOULDN'T GO: Anyone with high expectations. THE ROSES: GSE features a 'faux divey' atmosphere in a tony neighborhood near the Capitol. It is clean and well laid out, and the bar of interesting dipping sauces (chipolte, Old Bay, Siracha, mango) were actually quite clever and tasty. THE THORNS: Some elements of the menu are a bit vague in their descriptions. The Wedge Salad (which, when served 'to go', looks nothing like a wedge. Chef Spike, you honestly should know better. Presentation matters. Don't call it a Wedge Salad if it doesn't look like one. Did you flunk Geometry?) offers the option of adding a burger for an extra $3.50. The girl at the counter said something about whether I wanted my burger on the salad. I thought this was an odd question, but since she was one of those people who has the very annoying habit of speaking waaaaaay to softly and not enunciating at all, I just got tired of trying to understand what she was saying and said I wanted a burger with my salad for $3.50, like the online menu said (expecting a burger on the side). Imagine my chagrin when I got back to my hotel (I ordered 'to-go') and found that what I had was a rather pedestrian salad with a burger patty on top! This is what I get for not actually LOOKING at my order before leaving. So how was the food; was it the stuff you'd expect from a guy who was on "Top Chef"? Well, to be brutally honest..... No. The salad was something anyone would put together, and the burger patty was rather dry and not terribly flavorful. The side of onion 'petals' were nothing special either. The only real flair I saw in the meal was in the aforementioned dipping sauces. THE VERDICT: Taken on its own merits, GSE isn't awful, but it simply isn't anything special either, and hence is a bit of a letdown. It does show that the modern crop of 'celebrity' chefs who have been created in the hothouse of Reality TV shows can't hold a candle to the OG celebrity chefs (like Paul Prudhomme, Emril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, etc.) who became celebrities because of their - wait for it - ACTUAL brilliance in the kitchen, rather than their flair for self-promotion. At the end of the day; gimmicks like giving your dishes cutesy names ('Prez Obama Burger? Michelle Melt?), or wearing silly hats do not make for memorable food; they're just gimmicks. TOP TIP (diners): Be aware that having a burger included with your salad means having a patty tossed on top, not having a full burger (sorry, but to me, 'burger' means patty AND bun!!!). Also check your order for completeness, and be aware that you have to include flatware and napkins. Apparently, they won't put that stuff in your 'to-go' bag (I and to go scrounge flatware 'coz I didn't want to eat my salad with my fingers). You walk in, order your food at the counter, find a seat upstairs, and grab your food when your buzzer goes off. Easy enough, right? The hard part is picking which burger you want... All of their options sounded pretty good, but I decided to try the prez-obama burger with the village fries. Our group of 5 was able to easily find a table upstairs and our food was ready in less than 10 minutes. Not bad. Upon first glance, the burger looks so small, like whopper sized! Not too impressive. I thought the cheese on my burger was a little overwhelming and too heavy, but the onions and horseradish mayo were nice additions. The fries were nicely seasoned but most of them were soggy to the point where I didn't even want to finish them. Topped my meal off with a soda (wish I had gotten a milkshake, but it was too cold outside!) and for $12.99, I was s-t-u-f-f-e-d. As in... even after sitting there for 2 hours chit-chatting, I was still extremely full. Don't let that little burger fool you. It's damn filling. They also have an array of sauces for you to try and with me being a sauce queen, I was all over that.. my favorites were the sriracha and old bay. The mango was a little weird at first but then you realize it just tastes like a slightly sweetened mayonnaise and it's not bad. Overall I thought my experience here was okay. Not much interaction with staff except at the register and the cashier was plenty nice. Ample, clean seating upstairs and easily accessible via metro station. I've been here loads of times, but for brevity's sake will just cover my last visit. I came around 8:30 on a Tues night for a late dinner. It wasn't overly busy and the line got pretty long behind me very quickly. I probably waited around 15 minutes for one mushroom burger and two mini milkshakes. I got the shroom burger without the Good Stuff sauce and a toasted marshmallow shake, and my boyfriend got the seasonal cookies n cream shake. Even though the burger looked pretty small and it wasn't as cheesy as I remembered it, it did the perfect trick after a couple HH drinks at Circa. The bun wasn't overwhelming like at so many burger joints, and the lettuce and tomato were perfectly fresh. Even the onion was pungent. The toasted marshmallow shake was exactly as I remembered it - rich and creamy with a hit of spice. The cookies n cream shake disappeared down the belly pretty quickly as well. I have a hard time giving Good Stuff Eatery two stars because I think these burgers have so much potential. The recipes are great and when done correctly they are delicious; unfortunately the restaurant is obviously cutting corners. I own and use Spike's cookbook and have made a few of his recipes to the letter. From the Obama burger to the chili and the marshmallow shake all the recipes are absolutely delicious so cannot understand how the food the restaurant is putting out can be so bad. The fries are as bad as everybody says. If not worse. I noticed that they have mounds of uncooked, chopped potatoes sitting around and I am wondering if this is the reason why the potatoes come out so soggy and greasy and frankly depressive looking. The burgers are not bad but they are not great either. They press the meat so much the burger often comes out dry and the patty is often falling apart. The condiments on the burgers are tasteless. For instances, the horseradish mayo doesn't have "the kick" usual horseradish has and the red onions marmalade are overcooked. Once you put them together it makes for a very mediocre burger. I don't rate on service unless it's horrible and it wasn't. In fact, we met Spike's dad the first time we were there and he was lovely and very talkative. I hope the restaurant makes some adjustments and they start putting out better quality food because it is such a shame to be serving the food they are when the potential and recipes are so much more. read more

This place is ALWAYS PACKED and I don't even get it. The burgers are okay but nothing to wait in line over. The hamburger buns are painfully generic and the burger is greasy and messily put together most of the time. Which is understandable since there's usually 600 people in line. The shakes are also decent but kind of expensive and not particularly memorable. even the toasted marshmallow, which is the one everyone loves to talk about. Nuts and bolts: The boyfriend and I were hungry after sightseeing on the mall. I was in the mood for a burger, but didn't want to get something that I could just as easily get at home. This was one of the closest spots to a good burger according to Yelp, so we walked over. The place was busy when we got there. You order and then can go sit for a while until your order is ready. There was a small amount of seating outside. There is a second level. We finally found a seat upstairs by the window. Which was nice because we could look out and see the action of the city. Order: Bacon cheeseburger and cookies and cream shake for me. Mushroom burger for the boyfriend. Fries to share. Verdict: The burgers were ok, but didn't wow us. The milkshake was rather good. I'm not sure what warrants the incredibly high price of these burgers. I had the portobello mushroom burger, which was pretty damn good, but also a little over the top. It was breaded, fried and filled with a significant amount of melted cheese. It was really good but I don't think I needed quite all of those additions. Tried some of my friend's fries, they were pretty good and especially greasy and salty. They also have a bunch of different flavored mayos (I liked the Old Bay the best.) On our very last day visting D.C., my boyfriend and I decided to hunt down Good Stuff Eatery. We heard about it from a friend who is a huge Top Chef fan. And being in the nation's capital, why not go for some good old American food. Upon arrival to the restaurant, it was right around lunch time. The place was extremely busy! Luckily the line went pretty quickly and we only had to wait about 8-10 minutes. It surprises me in the previous reviews I read about this place, that some of you had a bad experience with the staff. The guy that took our order was extremely friendly! With a big grin on his face, he helped me break down the menu and suggest his favorites. Maybe he knew we were tourists or something? Who knows.. Trying to find a seat was a pain though. We crammed ourselves in a little table on the 2nd floor of the restaurant. It was a bit inconvenient, because people had a hard time getting around us to access the stairs. I eventually ended up ordering Spike's Sunnyside burger. The burger description stated "with lotsa napkins." In my opinion, any food item that requires a lot of napkins has to be delicious!! This proved to be true with the burger being nice and juicy. The toppings and patty all deliciously blended together on a nice brioche bun. I also ordered a vanilla milkshake. AWESOME. I drank it so fast almost gave myself brain freeze. The boyfriend got Colletti's smokehouse burger with chipotle bbq sauce. I didn't try any of his, but I can always tell when he's really enjoying something. He just keeps eating silently and does not talk to anyone. All in all, I enjoyed my Good Stuff Eatery experience. The food is averagely priced and pretty good. The restaurant gives off a very contemporary rustic feel to it. I don't get the hype around this place, other than Spike owns it. My husband, my brother and I are doing the Shaun T insanity workouts, so as to not negate my workout from earlier, I thought i would get a salad instead. Biggest mistake ever, what I got was a pre-packaged cafeteria salad with terrible dressing and 1/2 the ingredients are missing. We also got the fries, which were wilty and soggy. The onion petals were WAY too oily. My husband and brother both got the mushroom burger, and while it was good, it was small. 1 point here. I think most of the other reviewers have summed up what I experienced today. Overall, I like the idea of Good Stuff, they just need to work out the kinks and execute the quality a little better. Here is my bullet points. 1. Burger = ok I think due to being new and having a long line of people waiting the cook line was chaotic. Many of the burgers were over cooked. The meat also tasted a bit gristled and not high quality for boasting "farm raised fresh". 2. Fries = ok Not sure why they are so short and a bit soggy. 3. Dipping bar = good! This is a good idea. 4. Onion Rings = good, but shold be called onion chunks or petals, they are not rings 5. Wedge Salad = good, nice to have on the menu--nothing special though nor was intended to be. 6. Chili = good, but that cheese barrier!? Was that to seal the chili for future generations. Tasted and had the consistency of low grade Velveta. Bring on some real cheese! 7. Cornbread = poor Burnt and dry... 8. Menu = Good! The idea of the menu is very appealing. Just need to execute the intention a little better. 9. Service = ok...this is partly due to being new, but needs work. Spike's Dad was very good at keeping the line moving from outside and giving folks a preview of the menu. 10. Hamburgers are hamburgers in my opinion. They can range from good to great but rarely can it really go to spectacular. However, friends, what can go from good to absofrickenlutely fricktacular are milkshakes. And let me tell you about them milkshakes here. They looked gureat. It was my first time so I just tried the chocolate milkshake and it was, shall I say, very very very nice. There seems to be a whole variety of types of milkshakes you can get so I'm eagerly anticipating going back. Tasty.... Top Chef fans -- Spike's Good Stuff Eatery does not disappoint! The closest to an In-N-Out burger that I've ever tasted on the East Coast... Even better -- definitely more burger options than my beloved Cali chain. Village fries are amazing, and I love the selection of condiments - srichacha mayo, chipotle mayo, Old Bay mayo, even something with mango (though I didn't try that one). Be forewarned - even at 2 p.m. on a Saturday afternoon - lines were long. Fortunately, the staff's quick although the cashiers were a bit snotty (they need to get more order pick-up beepers). Great location, nice vibe, not too spendy.. perfect place to take a break as you museum-hop (kid-friendly, too). Sans drinks, a meal comes out to roughly $10 per person. read more

TBRH (to be really honest), this place just was another burger joint with average burgers, mushy fries, and crowded seating. They don't seem to clean the seating areas up often enough either - but it makes sense since there isn't a lot of space and a lot of people squish into the tables. The one thing that I'd come back for is maybe the shakes - but to be honest, I'd rather pay Johnny Rockets prices and go there instead. The food is insanely greasy - unnecessarily so. Although a little on the pricey side, this place is hands down one of the best burger establishments I've been to. As a Californian, I'm going to put it out there, this is better than In-N-Out; of course you could probably buy double the amount of food at In-N-Out for what you pay here. I had the Free Range Burger, village fries and a very berry shake. The burger was the right size. When it said it had avocado in it, they weren't kidding; it had a lot of it. And I greatly appreciated that. And that sauce they use is really good. The village fries are perfectly seasoned with thyme, rosemary and pepper. The mango mayo and the chipotle mayo is amazing, although I'm sure it can't be good for you. The shake was great. There is no doubt that they use just fresh fruit and ice cream. I've been to good stuff loads of times - I even make special trips here (i do not live in the capitol hill area) because I think it is delicious. Not sure what is up with the other reviews. I always take my out of town guests here, so this weekend I brought my Aussie friends. I had the Michelle Turkey burger and it was amazing! I liked the sauce a lot and it had so much flavor. Friends all liked their burgers, too. I'm in love with the siracha mayo ... We got the rosemary fries and I think they are ok, too much rosemary and thyme in my opinion, but I think it's all personal preferences. Now, let's talk about the shakes. Spike makes THE BEST shakes! I've done my fair share of shake tasting (this weekend we did 3 shakes in 3 days, GS wins hands down). The milky way is my favorite. This time I had the salty caramel. Also love the toasted marshmallow and the strawberry. You seriously cannot go wrong. Long lines during lunch, and lots of tourists, so beware. But so, so, so delicious. read more

If it weren't so crowded, I might have given this place four stars instead of three. The burgers and fries are delicious, though a bit on the greasy side (and I love greasy food, so be prepared for LOTS of grease). I also enjoyed the salted caramel shake that I got once, but you can't really go wrong with anything involving salt and caramel. The burgers are thick, well-seasoned, and juicy. They've also got stuffed mushroom "burgers," for those of you who are not down with the meat. Don't expect the fries to be crispy, but do expect them to be tasty. Moving on to the crowd issue -- I have only been here for lunch on weekdays, so perhaps it's easier to find a seat during other times. However, if you try to go at noon on a Wednesday, be prepared for INSANE crowds. It's hard to even find standing room, and is so crowded that I am actually uncomfortable because I can't go anywhere without bumping into someone. The last time I went, I sat outside (even though it was only 40 degrees out) just to get away from the chaos. While I was waiting for my food, I saw at least four or five groups of people walk in and come straight back out because they didn't want to deal with the line. Tip: the line isn't too bad -- it moves quickly, so it shouldn't be a big deal unless you're on a very tight schedule for work -- but trying to find a place to sit is hellish. Burgers were much smaller than expected, served on Safeway-ish buns. The veggie/mushroom was a fried, pressed patty with cheese inside. I was expecting something else, like maybe an actual mushroom, but I read the menu wrong. The Obama was a presidential mess. A burger existed somewhere underneath the barely cooked bacon, but it was hard to find. Interesting flavor combo, would've been better if bacon was cooked. These were both tightly wrapped (read: smashed) in paper and jammed in a bag. You don't unwrap it so much as unpeel it. Fries were awful. I thought something was wrong with ours, but judging by most of the photos here, I can see that overcooked, 3/4" long, soggy fries seem to be the goal of the kitchen. I first visited good stuff 3 years ago when I first moved to DC and I have tried countless burger places in DC and elsewhere and good stuff remains #1. There are haters out there because chef spike owns it, but good stuff is not a tourist trap it is worth the hype. First off its in a nice area, close to capitol south on Penn ave. GS has a very laid back atmosphere and is casual . The burgers are small but piled with toppings and I've never been able to eat more than one. Favorite is Sunnyside with a fried egg bacon and gs sauce. So good. Huge selection of burgers and non beef options. The fries are greasy but crispy. The sauces are the star. Sriacha is my go to. The shakes are great as well. If you only try one go with toasted marshmallow. Shake shack , the counter , bts. There are many good burgers in DC but good stuff is the best. read more

I'm not sure what else I can add here. Great burgers, shakes, and fries for the most reasonable price in town and sizes to fit any appetite. Undressed up burgers and fries are good, but there's variations for every palate and lots of fun sauces. Was in town to run a marathon so the first time it was recommended to me by a staffer, I passed it up, but after the marathon another friend that works on the hill reiterated that it was great. The burgers are good, and are worth the money, but they are not worth the wait if the line is out the door. I know it takes a while to make cook-to-order burgers but I have waited over a half hour for a burger at this place. Waiting that long for a burger makes my girlfriend grumpy. And when she is grumpy, everyone is grumpy. The toasted marshmallow milkshake however, is worth the wait if the line is down the street. I also very much enjoy the village fries, but the onion petals are also a good option. My favorite thing about this place (other than the aforementioned Marshmallow shake) is the mango mayo. i know it sounds awful, but that stuff is amazing. My wife and I stopped here one Saturday for lunch. We both had burgers and shakes. My wife said that the marshmallow shake was the best that she ever had. I had a strawberry shake and that too was the best that I ever had. The burgers too were fantastic. The fries were okay. The restaurant itself was noisy and cramped. We had some people near us that had no concept of personal space and practically invited themselves into our table. In spite of that, this is still a great place to go for lunch. read more

I want to like this place, I really do. I've had a great experience trying former Top Chef contestants' restaurants--unbelievable food at Perilla in NYC by Harold Dieterle, great burgers and shakes at FLIP in Atlanta by Richard Blais. After two visits, Good Stuff just really falls short. It's not that their burgers are bad--they're totally fine....but incredibly overpriced. Their fries, on the other hand, are just....awful. Soggy, limp, cold. I'm seeing from other reviews I'm not alone on this. It's shocking to me--I don't know how Spike could let his restaurant serve such undeniably poor french fries. But yet, here we are. The shakes are indeed something special, though, and I'll be dropping back in just to grab some of those in the future. The burgers were very tasty. I have the Barack Obama burger and my spouse had the Michelle melt. I thought the Barack Obama Burger was really good but for the price it was rather small. In addition I had the fries and the coffee shake. The fries were a healthy portion van were very greasy but tasted very good. I was disappointed with the size of the shake and my shake didn't taste like coffee at all but my spouse's seemed to have an overabundance of coffee in hers. The price to food value wasn't worth it to me. 4 the three of us it came to $60 and that was for 3 cheesburgers, fries and a shakes. UPDATE: I recently returned to Good Stuff and was sadly disappointed in the quality of food and service. There were only 2 people in line ahead of us, but our meal still took 20 minutes to process. Okay, sometimes things are slow, but with 6 kitchen staff and 3 front of house staff, this should not have been the case! Further, the burgers have SHRUNK in size, though the price tag has not. Worse: I ordered the Obama-burger without mayo, given that it was supposed to come with roquefort and onion roumalade and I did not want a damp mess to deal with. I needn't have bothered, as the kitchen seemed to have thought they'd make up for the lack of mayo with an extra squirt of grease from the griddle. It was impossible to pick up! And the rosemary "fries" were an inedible mass of tiny broken bits of potato (not one was longer than an inch-and-a-half -- most were better described as 'nibs') in congealed grease. Ordered our food and got smushed overcooked burgers, a milkshake you can't sip through a straw and never got the fries we thought we ordered but were never charged for.
