Great burgers. The fries are sometimes hit or miss. When they hit though, they are worth it.

I like the shakes. Can I just stop there? I have been to Good Stuff several times and just wasn't that impressed. The burgers are OK, but nothing to write home about. I am a big flavor person. I like to taste the food, not just the seasoning. To me, the seasoning should enhance the food. My rosemary fries were a big, greasy, tasteless mess. Maybe the fry maker was having a bad day. I see other reviews on here that rave about those fries. I just wanted to go brush my teeth and have liposuction after eating them. But I do like the shakes, did I already say that? read more

I got the Prez Obama burger. I'm a big condiment guy so I enjoyed the 4 to 5 different dipping sauces and the mango sauce with my fries was my favorite. In fact, we ordered another fries due to it being so good. The place was crowded at lunch time with yuppies and students seemingly at every table. DC has low unemployment and is a vibrant place for young urban professionals. We loved DC. Oh, we also had the marshmallow milkshake which was thick as concrete. Heard a lot of great things about this place and decided to stop in and grab some lunch the other day. I got the prez Obama burger, a side of snack fries, and a mini Cinnamon Toast Crunch milkshake. The milkshake was fantastic and the burger was also delicious. The main issue that I had with this place is that it was quite expensive. My meal was around $20 and I didn't even get the full sized fries or milkshake. Would be better if it were cheaper but will definitely be coming back for the milkshakes. Three stars is about right. Foodwise, it's closer to Five Guys than Hellburger, but about 40% more expensive. The burger is very good, but the presentation is a bit lacking, which wouldn't matter if we were talking a $3 or even $5 burger, but for $6-$8 I just expect more. It seems its done one way--they didn't ask for a wellness preference, but it was still juicy and drippy. The fries are good, but seemed to be sliced from the short side of the potato, making them all pretty short with lots of nubs. They offer a nice assortment of flavored mayos, including mango, chipotle, and old bay. The shake was very good but a bit too rich for my liking. I'd probably skip the shake or take someone else's suggestion to order the kid size one. The service was rather mediocre...not tremendously friendly and they managed to mess up my order the second time I visited. read more

Stopped by on a Friday at noon while vacationing and visiting a friend. I'll say one thing for sure, the toasted marshmallow shake lives up to the hype. Get it. Enjoy. Worry about working off the calories later. The place was packed when we went (as it usually is, I hear). Waited 15+ minutes in line to order and another 15+ to get our food. No big deal really, we weren't rushed. I can't imagine being a local waiting these times though, because the burgers weren't that good. I like a thick, juicy burger, and this burger, while thick, was somehow not juicy. I guess that might stem from the fact that you don't get to specify the temperature of your burger. The fries were greasy and not crisp, but the flavored mayos here are so amazing, which cancels out the bad fry and can make a dry burger wet. This place gets 2 stars for making an awesome milkshake that I would gladly wait in line again for. It gets another star for having an awesomely delicious self-serve flavored mayo bar. read more

First place in DC that I absolutely love. this place is great. Great food, fast lines, good service, and a veggie burger to die for. don't get me wrong when I say that. I am a serious carnivore. I ordered the sunny side, it had a fried egg on top of a giant patty of beef and I ordered my friend the veggie mushroom burger. I took one bite of that giant portabello stuffed with muenster cheese and then deep fried in crispy something-amazing batter, and I traded. I gave up a thick juicy patty for a fungus and cheese. that's how good it was. not to say their burgers aren't amazing. they are. the beef is good, it's a thick patty and the egg is fried just right. I just crave that veggie burger like nobody's business. their shakes are amazing too. the marshmallow was way too sweet for me to drink a ton of, but the berry one was AMAZING and perfect in every way. it's thick, it's sweet, the ice cream is smooth and creamy and that first sip is so hard to get, that your face turns red. one critique, if they care about the environment, change the packaging. I would advise them to check out the operations of a place in the northwest called Burgerville. Every kind of packaging they use is biodegradable and all their produce that they use is locally farmed. their cheese is local, their milk is local, the beef is hormone rbst free, and they just give and give to the community. I would love to see this place do something like that. I haven't tried the pizza place by the same top-chef Spike, next door. the veggie burgers just always seem like the better choice. read more

I wanted to check out this place because I loved Spike on Top Chef. So while visiting the area recently, I decided to stop by. We got there in the middle of the week around 3, so there was no line. Service was a so-so. The dude at the register was pretty indifferent and just kind of "blah". I ended up ordering the Prez Obama burger, my bestie got the shroom burger and we split fries. She got a vanilla milkshake and said it was the best she'd had in a long time. The burger was delicious and fresh, but kinda small. It had just the right amount of onions, bacon and blue cheese, but a little lettuce and tomato would have set it off just right. The shroom burger was awesome. It was mushroom caps and cheese breaded in panko and flash fried topped with lettuce, tomato and good stuff sauce. Yow! The bite I had was really delish. The fries were awesome, but strangely they were very broken up into 1 or 1 1/2 inch pieces. It was hard to get dip them in ketchup without saucing your finger tips and after a while, that got messy. Oh how I wish they were longer. I swear I probably would have gotten another order. I enjoyed trying the different flavored mayos with the Old Bay being my favorite. I think I will stop by again and check out a different burger and get some more of those fry pieces. read more

This place is pretty good. I've been loads of times - I don't think it's as good as the ridiculous lines suggest - there just aren't enough great places close to the Capitol for all of the Hill staffers. Fries are fantastic if they cook them long enough, however, too often they take them out too early and they end up soggy. Excellent dipping sauces for fries too. The shakes taste great, but they are very pricey. The portobello mushroom burger is pretty good, but there is WAY too much cheese in it. The food at this place is generally decent, but I always feel gross afterwards. It must be the grease. I'll be back but I won't love it. read more

I was fortunate enough to be invited to the grand opening party of Good Stuff with Spike himself! I was a HUGE Top Chef fan so it was so exciting meeting him, Stephanie, and Antonia. We were provided with free champagne and cocktails...ok maybe I should review the actual food! Slider samples were disributed and I tried a mini turkey burger with avocado: delicious. It was so moist and the potato bun was steamy and soft. I'm not a huge fry fan, but my friend liked them, although she said they were a little too covered in their respective spices. The milkshakes were realllllly sweet, almost like frosting in a cup, but if that's what you're looking for, then you'll like it. The inside is a bit congested and I was having trouble figuring out where to sit. I'm sure the layout is different during normal business hours. Meh. This place is okay. The decor/branding of the place was nice and clear. The atmosphere and music was okay. The location is a plus- the area looks different in the daytime! Use to hang around the area bars..Anyway, the staff on the other hand didn't act enthuse and they were not customer friendly- they were mediocre. Now on to the food: my friend and I ordered the following: Prez Obama Burger- according to him it was okay. nothing crazy. He says hands down shake shack wins. Shroom Burger- I ate this and it was a no bueno. It was dry and just nothing compared to Shake Shack's shroom. Fries- regular sea salt, then the herb one: the regular fries were okay, but the herb one had WAAAY too much of that herb seasoning-yuck. Onion Rings- pretty good. Marshmellow Shake- disgustingly delicious! Definitely a great staple of the place. Mayo dipping sauce- they definitely gain a star for this! Their mayo sauces were delish! Maybe it's because I live in New York where there are many overrated, overpriced burger places, but I really was impressed by the quality and prices at Good Stuff. I'm a sauce girl, so I was thrilled by the variety of dipping sauces...omg onion petals and mango mayo...who would've thought it would rock my world so. Every aspect of my burger was spot on, the rosemary fries were fabulous(had a cute name, I just can't remember it) and my onion petals were great for piling on my burger. The fries were soggy and they crushed my fried egg when they wrapped my burger to go, but the saving grace was the toasted marshmallow milkshake. Not too thick, not too runny, just the right consistency to be enjoyed through a straw and still satisfy. Loved how it wasn't overly sweet, and that you got hints of the burnt marshmallow throughout. Plus, the charred marshmallow on top is a nice touch. But if you are going to still need to eat something (besides the milkshake) that may pass more convincingly for an actual meal, anything with their applewood bacon is good (nice flavour, and they give you lots of it!), and the onion marmalade in the Prez Obama burger is pretty tasty too. But if you're going to ask me what I would pick between GSE vs Shake Shack? In the end, it always comes down to the basics, and in my mind, Shake Stack has still got the upper hand when it comes to the meat and the buns. read more

Best burger in DC...and one of the best milkshakes. Trust me, I lived in Texas, land of cattle & beef! Try the Milky Way milkshake with fudge and caramel. A small sized order goes a log way. The best thing I can say about this place is that the burgers LOOKED delicious - however for an aspiring vegetarian, it was borderline torture to even be in the place, as the only veggie option was a portabella-cheese-panko-fried "burger" creation that probably had double the fat of a regular burger and certainly wasn't as good. The fries were decent and the milkshake was good (I had chocolate), though nothing out of the ordinary. The wait was about 3 times what you'd find at Five Guys. Disclaimer: I didn't even have a real hamburger, I had a turkey burger, so this review might not be very fair. Spike would open Good Stuff Eatery, an over-hyped spot with sleazy grub that is way overpriced. After reading the raves about this spot, and knowing that it was from an ex Top-Chef contestant, I was pretty surprised when I walked in. GSE is a slightly upscale steak and shake with top chef "art" on the wall. He really could have done more with the inside. I understand that he is trying to accomplish an upscale burger joint, but if your going to charge 8 dollars for a burger, 4 dollars for a side of fries and 3 dollars for a soft drink (bringing a lunch to around 15 dollars), can you at least make the place look cool? My turkey burger was pretty good, juicy, nice avocado, but it was small and nothing to write Guy Fieri about. Although the the village fries deff hit the spot, yummmmm. One of the places that I had to go while visiting D.C. was Good Stuff. I had a crush on Spike Mendelson when he was on Top Chef. Before I went, I did not tell my boyfriend this, just that we were going to get some burgers. Because. We both love the shit out of some burgers. And milkshakes! This was the place to go before our private capitol tour! So we went and my sister tagged along with us, which is great, as I got to have some words on the Turkey Melt named after Michelle Obama. My sister said "This is the best turkey burger I've ever eaten in my life" and then took dozens of photos on her phone and posted them to twitter. My sister doesn't get excited about food unless it is really, really good, so I believed her. I was a lard ass and got the double bacon cheeseburger with fries and the Dulce De Leche milkshake. The burger was delicious, juicy and it had everything you could ever want in a burger. Perfectly flavored, I wanted to just eat this everyday. It is a good thing I don't live in D.C., as I would be here too often. And the milkshake. Ohhhhhhhh the milkshake. It was heaven. It was large. It was DELICIOUS. I am lactose intolerant, so I try not to drink all of my milkshakes-I drank all of this and then was scrambling around trying to figure out if I could fit one into my stomach. It had caramel and bits of cookie pieces in it-it was just delicious. I want it now. We split two orders of fries between the three of us and we could have just split one and been ok. The burger was just OK, very greasy and bit disassembled when I opened the paper wrapping. Honestly, for $7 I expect a real size burger not a slider. I stopped in here recently for lunch with a friend. We were both starving and ordered lettuce-wrapped burgers (a great option for those of us limiting grain), fries, and shakes. When it first came out, I thought it was a great choice. By the end of my meal, I was, well...STUFFED! I just had a small shake and small order of fries, but it was so very much food. My husband and I visited Good Stuff on our way to a Nats game (yes I know it's a bit out of the way...it was worth it). It's only a couple of blocks away from the Metro station, so it's easy to get to. It's right next door to We, The Pizza...and both are owned by Top Chef Spike Mendelsohn. Being Top Chef fans we try out every restaurant the contestants own or work in that we can manage. Originally we were going to eat at We, The Pizza, but I accidentally walked through the wrong door and wound up in Good Stuff. Once the AC hit me in the face there was no way I was going back out in the melting heat to eat Pizza. We'll have to try that some other time. It was a happy accident, because instead of pizza I was treated to the best burger I've had in a long, long time and a Berry Shake that was to die for. I'm sure I gained 5 pounds just looking at it but O.M.G. My husband and I shared the shake, thank goodness. At least I only got half the calories. It was the richest, creamiest, most awesome flavor shake I've had in a long, long time. Next time I'll try the chocolate, but the Berry totally rocks. I had the Spike's Sunnyside burger, which includes bacon and a fresh poached egg on top. I've always wondered what that tastes like. There's something about egg dripping over the sides of a burger that takes it from being a mere burger into something more like an art form. I will say this, if you are looking for ONLY a burger taste, then don't choose this one. The egg and bacon do overwhelm the meat a bit. That said, I loved it. It was gooey, messy awesomeness. My husband got the Farmhouse Burger with Cheese, and it was everything a burger should be. Juicy, great flavor, just the meat and cheese and nothing to overwhelm the goodness of the meat blend he uses. I had several bites and I'm pretty sure that's what I'd choose next time. If you go, don't skip the Spike's Village Fries. I've never had fries with rosemary and thyme on them but they were excellent, especially with the chipotle mayo to dip them in. It was a gourmet type of burger, at a decent price, and in the AC! There's seating upstairs...sit close to the front window if you want the most of the cool air. I'll definitely go back. It'll be hard to pass by this to try the pizza...but maybe I can talk the hubby into getting pizza while I get my burger and we can share. Anything's possible :-) read more

I consider this review to be unbiased since I don't really watch top chef and I'd never heard of Spike until I went to Good Stuff. I have no love or hate for the man. Basically my thoughts are as follows: Good, albeit overpriced. I always get the Colleti's smoke house, which is a spicy BBQ burger with onion rings. Frankly, I adore it and occasionally get cravings. It's pretty delish. Sometimes I find the meat to be a little overcooked, but its not cooked to order, so whatever. I always love their milkshakes, which are a separate meal, in and of themselves (you pay like its a separate meal, too). I'm partial to the berry flavor. But the price! The price kills me. A $10 meal at a burger joint just isn't competitive! Sure, Good Stuff offers burgers out of the ordinary, but frankly, they're not that much better than 5 Guys, which sells $4 burgers. Even so, I come back a least once per month. Granted, it's with a little chagrin, but I still come back. 4 star food, but a 2 star price. If you know this place it run by a guy who got famous from reality TV, you're probably wondering is it actually good or just all hype? My answer: It's good, but it has some faults, so it's worth trying, but the prices and waiting mean I won't be back often. I went here for an early lunch on a weekday, hoping to avoid the crowds. The first annoyance was that I got there at about 11:15 and they don't open until 11:30. The second annoyance was that there was already a line of either Hill interns or dressed up tourists ahead of me. I ended up having to wait around 15 minutes for the place to open and another 15 or so to order. Then it took them a long time (maybe 20 minutes) to fill my order (probably because of all the people in front of me). I certainly enjoyed my food, but it did have a few problems. I ordered the Blazin' Barn Burger (a burger with thai-style toppings including picked daikon, thai basil, and mayo with sriracha, which reminded me of bahn mi), the village fries (seasoned with rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper), and a toasted marshmallow milkshake. The burger was delicious, except that between the meat and the fixings it was a bit over-salted. The bun was good ,which is more than I can say for Five Guys. I was a little disappointed that they didn't ask me how I wanted the burger done. I will say that the burger they serve at Palena is probably a bit better, but it's also more expensive. The fries had really tasty seasoning, but they were limp and oily, not crispy (this IS similar to Five Guys). The marshmallow milkshake, on the other hand, was just great, easily the highlight. I didn't see how they make it, but it had at least one whole toasted marshmallow in it, and it really seemed like more had been blended into the ice cream. It was creamy, appropriately sweet, and had that authentic campfire taste. Now, this thing cost me a cool $5.25. To quote Pulp Fiction, "this is a pretty ****ing good milkshake, ,,,I don't know if it's worth five dollars, but it's pretty ****ing good." In total, my meal cost me $15 and change. That's a lot for a burger, fries, and a shake at a place with no table service. I would say that the burgers here are certainly a cut above Five Guys or most other burger joints. I wanted to love the fries, but I want them crisp. I do love the fact that they have 3 flavored mayos on tap: sriracha, Old Bay, and chipotle (and unlike most places, the chipotle mayo actually taste like it contains chipotle, not just like pink mayo that might have once sat next to a chipotle). The food here is definitely a lot more interesting than your average burger joint, but using spicy mayo and toppings borrowed from other dishes isn't necessarily culinary genius either. Maybe if they fixed the few flaws I could see paying the high price and dealing with the wait, but until them I'm not sure. I recently went here for lunch with my brother because of the Top Chef connection. I'll admit that. Anyway, I got the Obama burger with chicken. While the burger, itself, was small, which was disappointing, it tasted good. I just wish there was more of it to enjoy. The onion marmalade and Roquefort cheese were great. We split an order of Village Fries, which were a little soggy, but the herbs used to season them gave it a nice touch. The mayonnaises offered were a nice complement to the fries, as well. The chipotle and mango varieties provided a nice accent to the condiment, while the Old Bay variety was a little strong. If we got there five minutes later than we did, we would have been stuck in a very long and unorganized looking line, if you want to call it that. I don't eat beef so tried the Michelle Melt Turkey Burger. OMG! It was heaven! I've never tasted such a good burger and I'm pretty sure I won't ever again. Muenster cheese, caramelized onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and a southwestern mayo...yummy! There were scrumptious juices dripping out of a turkey burger..who knew that was even possible?!! The village fries were great and so were all the varieties of mayo. My favorite was the Sriracha mayo... I've taken off one star coz I thought the guys taking the orders and handling delivery at the counter were quite annoyed when they saw the lunch crowd. All five burgers were overcooked and very, very salty.....and small. So much hype, so little delivery. Will not go back. Go somewhere else for a good burger. read more

Several months into the opening of Good Stuff, things have definitely quieted down (ignoring Inaugural crowds, of course). Is it still as absolutely amazing as it seemed when it first opened? Well... pretty much, yeah. Right around Capitol Hill, near the House Office buildings, there's a distinct lack of really good, quick lunch places, and Good Stuff is still one of my favorites to fill that gap. Yes, there is still a bit of a line, and you have to wait a bit longer between order and pickup. But from arrival to walk-out, lunch at Good Stuff seems timed perfectly for a break from a long day's work on the Hill. I am a picky eater, especially when it comes to burgers. I don't like American cheese, I like my burgers plain with catsup only - depending on my mood I don't even want lettuce or tomatoes on the thing. I've never had Good Stuff bat an eye when I modify one of their burgers to fit my particular tastes. The rosemary fries aren't my favorite, but that's just me. What makes Good Stuff so wonderful, in my humble opinion, is not that it's another mid to high end burger place. It's that it's a great lunch spot that is unique and consistently good in a spot where the other options on the block are Cosi, Starbucks, and the like. My friend wanted to take me here while I was in town 1) because it's his favorite burger shop and 2) because the place is somewhat famous. I loved the menu options and couldn't decide what I wanted, so I went with the Prez Obama burger b/c of its popularity. When my food was ready, I was surprised at how small the burger was. It tasted good though. My fries came out plain even through I ordered village fries. I took them back, and someone added rosemary to them. I thought it would be evenly distributed and not dumped on. The food was good, but not magical. I liked it, but it didn't rock my world the way I thought it would. Was recently in DC on vacation, and being a Chicago foodie: I of course yelped the heck out of this place before stepping in the door, which made me come in with some expectations (i.e. :i've read mixed reviews, people either love it or think it's so-so, it's expensive for the size of their burgers, someone got sick eating here...etc) My order: 1. The fries....are DELICIOUS. Delicious. So good. The fries you dream about when you want "good fries". And the dipping sauces?? Amazing: don't be freaked out by the Mango Mayo. 2. Marshmallow shake was to die for. Everything I imaged since I love marshmallow anything+ice cream. 3. Had to be a tourist and get the "Michelle's Melt"...very tasty. My experience: I was 3 bites away from finishing my Michelle's Melt and monitoring my intake of fries so I could have the perfect last bite of fries to polish off my meal. I took a bite of my burger and felt something sharp in my mouth...sick. Sick. Embarrassingly, I spit it out onto my tray and low and behold there is a GIANT piece of plastic (like the kind sturdy plastic forks/spoons are made of) in my burger and broken up into tiny pieces in my mouth sans the giant piece on my plate...SICK (again). I brought it inside and showed the manager, and they were very gracious about it. They offered me a refund, a new burger (umm...the plastic kind of ruined my appetite for burgers for a while, no thanks), and I asked for a free shake to wash away the memory and taste of the burger in my mouth. They complied. My friends burgers were fine: I've heard this place is pretty solid from locals. But in my pre-visit yelping, again, I did read that some people have gotten food poisoning, etc from this place...wonder why when they have foreign objects floating around in their meat? On my quest to find the best burger in the world, I think I found a contender here in Washington. Good Stuff Eatery was recommended to me by my Capitol Hill tour guide. He told the restaurant was opened up by a former contestant of Top Chef so I gave this place a whirl. The place was packed on a Thursday afternoon for lunch. It's always a good sign to a tourist that you've come to the right place when the locals are anxious to grab a bite here. I had the Obama burger, which comes with which boasts bacon, blue cheese, onion marmalade, and horseradish mayo. It looked small but wow does it pack a punch. I didnt even bother to get fries or a drink and I'm glad I didn't because the burger itself was so satisfying! I hope to someday come back here and try something new, seems people are a fan of the fries and the shakes as well! read more

Good Stuff Eatery almost caused a traffic pileup on 295 this afternoon. I'll explain later... This was our last meal in DC before hitting the road to NYC and it hit the spot! I had a Spike's Sunnyside burger, the lady had a Prez Obama burger and we split Spike's Village fries and a Toasted Marshmallow shake. The burgers were good. The egg on the sunnyside could have been done more, there was a pile of uncooked albumen in the paper when I unwrapped it. What was on the burger was cooked and it was damn good. The Obama came out really moist, not greasy but wet. I'm not sure what that was all about but the woman is a picky eater and she didn't mind it too much. I thought the roquefort was a little overpowering but again, she liked it a lot. We loved the chipotle and sriracha mayo dipping sauces for the fries, the old bay not so much. If I go back I'd like to try a bacon cheeseburger with the chipotle mayo on it, I'm getting hungry just thinking about combining them. The Toasted Marshmallow shake was AWESOME! When I was coming down the stairs to pick up my order I could smell the freshly charred marshmallows they used to top off my shake and I knew it was going to rock. I ended up taking it in the car to finish on the ride home and that's where things got dangerous. Now it didn't really come that close to causing a pileup, but that's only because I'm pretty experienced when it comes to eating and driving... When I finished the shake I looked into the cup and saw the aforementioned marshmallows at the bottom and there was no way in hell I wasn't going to eat them. If you were behind me on 295 this afternoon you may have seen my car meandering within the lane a bit as a steered with my knee and used the straw to skewer the marshmallows with the straw and pull them out through the hole in the lid, being extra careful not to let the remnants of the shake drip onto my lap (and my nice suede seats!). So there you have it; Good Stuff Eatery encourages unsafe actions behind the wheel. Next time I'm going to try to eat my whole meal while steering a motorcycle with my feet. read more

Sorry, what was the big deal about Good Stuff Eatery? Burgers are smashed, drinks are saccharine sweet, the staff are very apathetic. And only one or two cash registers? Come on; you can do better than that. For the record, I can make better French Fry toppings, too. Not impressed, not coming back. read more
