This review is specifically for Gracie's tea service. I was extremely disappointed in the afternoon tea. I love tea. When I heard The Heathman was no longer doing a traditional British service, I decided to try Gracie's. I was staying at the Hotel Deluxe for the weekend, and the hotel was beautiful with great service and a lovely bar. The tea was not up to the standard of the hotel. It is $40 for a single person, which is a lot. I would expect some innovative offerings for that price. The tea menu itself was limited with only 9 varieties. The entire savory selection was entirely made up of tea sandwiches on white bread. No tarts. No puffs. No particularly creative fillings. Cucumber, ham, chicken and salmon. Altogether, it was probably less than a whole sandwich. The scones were ok. A basic scone recipe. Again, nothing special. The deserts were nice, but by then, I had lost my enthusiasm for the event. Would I pay $20 for this meal? Sure. Maybe. It would still be overpriced. At $40, frankly, I feel cheated. The price was based on the good name of the hotel the tea was in. We paid $250 for 5 people (with tip), and if the price wasn't so offensive, the whole experience would be utterly forgettable. Next time I will not hesitate to try the Russian tea at The Heathman. Their menu looks amazing! And they charge $1 less. read more

A solid 3.5 The appetizers were great, the entree's just ok, with a fantastic dessert. My 3 girlfriends and I came back to Portland just in time for the last days of Portland Dining month, and we decided to try Gracie's.- $25 for 3 courses. Not all shrimp cocktail is created equal, and Gracie's has a very good one, the shrimp was marinated giving it that extra umph- with a great coleslaw to complement it. The chicken chowder was also very flavorful and hearty. I ordered asparagus ravioli and decided to pay a little extra to add shrimp. The dish was good, but it did not wow. Everyone else at the table ordered steak, it came out overcooked, but still had a great au jus. The risotto was perfect in a nice creamy sauce with fava beans. The desserts: the creme brulee was good, nothing out of the ordinary, The rhubarb crisp a bit overly sweet. But the bread pudding- OH MY! So delicious. The bread pudding is dipped in cornflakes and FRIED! giving it a crispy crust with a warm and gooey middle, one of the most comforting combinations out there. I made reservations online at restaurants.com and with my instructions I asked for a table with the most romantic atmosphere and the hostess didn't seem to pay attention to that detail. However we did get seated immediately and were able to choose from our limited menu quickly. Since we went in March, this particular restaurant is participating in PDX dining month (three course dinner for $30). There were 3 options for every entree and the wine I had was very good. Our server was on top of our orders and was very punctual whenever we needed something. We were celebrating our 5th anniversary. :) Our desserts were delicious! I highly recommend the bread pudding! This place is wonderful. I found it on accident when looking for a nearby restaurant to the theater while my in-laws were visiting. I decided it was worth bringing my parents and grandmother to. I'm so glad I did. The restaurant is in a very well maintained and very classy hotel. The name escapes me at the moment. I love the style of the place and they not only have kept up the classy look, but the service as well. Our waitress was wonderful, came exactly when we were ready for things and never felt like we were waiting long or being rushed. The food was raved about by my whole family. Some of their favorites were the Gorgonzola cheesecake, the scallops, and the steak. Wonderful wine selection as well. This is a wonderful place to celebrate big events in large groups or intimate settings. They do high tea as well, but apparently the wait list is over a month for the holidays. This place is really beautiful inside. It's great photo-op if you're an insta-blogger looking to get some great shots of your life, brunching on the weekend with your gal-pals looking all cute. It's a great space, beautifully decorated; I kind of felt like Rose sitting in the 1st class dining room on the Titanic. The service was great! No complaints in that department. Usually at a fine establishment like Gracie's I expect civilized service and that is what we got. I wish I could say the food was outstanding, 5 stars, but it was just A-OK. I had the corned beef hash & it was alright. It wasn't terrible, it wasn't amazing. All the girls I was brunching with, we all ended up sampling each other's dishes. It was all simply ok. I know they've changed their menu since then, but they had this Mexican inspired egg dish, I can't remember if it was chileaquiles or a chorizo dish but I remember that thing was spiiiiicy. I don't think they have that dish anymore. I actually liked that dish, it was a little above average! This is a cute place to come to celebrate with your gal-pals or family. Gracie's has a vintage opulence to its atmosphere - sky-high ceilings with ornate moldings, big chandeliers, velvet curtains, etc. The upper echelon of class! Thankfully, the menu pricing is completely reasonable. The pork belly reuben crostini was every bit as tasty as I imagined it would be. The pickled cabbage dressing helped cut the richness of the pork belly. You get three crostini per order. The trout almondine with broccolini was nicely prepared but a little on the oily side. Finally, the berry crisp a la mode I had for dessert was superb - they have the best fruit in Portland when it's in season. read more

We tried Gracie's out for Portland Dining Month and weren't disappointed! The atmosphere and service were great. Our server, Brandon, was attentive and friendly without hovering. My boyfriend and I always try different courses from each other for Portland Dining Month so we can try more of the menu and everything we had was delicious. Our standouts for this meal were the Gulf Prawns, Beef Cheeks, and White Chocolate Mousse with Raspberry Coulis. It's our second time here. This time for Valentine's Day, and these guys did not miss a beat! Music, decor, ambiance, menu selection, preparation, wine recommendations... they got it all right. Including...... Jordan. Our server was a young Michael Cera-type in looks and demeanor. Jordan was the BEST! He took care of us in a way that truly exceeded our expectations. Today, when you visit a fine restaurant, the servers are often a little rough around the edges. But not here. Jordan made this place at least ten times classier with his choice of words, attentiveness, pleasant attitude and overall service. I was very excited to attend the new Afternoon Tea event this past Sunday. I am sharing a few issues because I want this event to succeed. The table presentation was beautiful and well polished! I have to say the food was average. The sandwich bread and scones were a bit dry. I love La Provence, but the tart shells were soggy. We had to ask our server for the Devonshire cream and jam. Overall, we had a very nice time. As you know, it's the small details that will make this a unique and successful tradition at Gracie's. I hope to return and make this a tradition with friends and visitors to Portland. I love this restaurant because of the well prepared food, ambiance, and service. I had brunch here. We have come often for breakfast and the food is excellent. But they are under staffed and so the service is very slow. The hostess asked us to sit in the lobby until the server arrived on the job. We asked to be seated at a table and then after being seated no one waited on us. There was one waiter and he was running around frantically trying to wait on the three tables that were there before us. After ten minutes of being ignored we decided to leave. We will not go back. We walked to Sentinel Hotel on 10th (Jakes Grill) and had a perfect breakfast at lower prices. read more

I went for High Tea with friends. It was my birthday and two of us had called to inform that we had a GF and vegetarian. The service was not good at all. Gracies did not remember the request and when we asked if the issue could be remedied, the waiter informed us "the cook does not want to". The tea was steeped way too long and was so bitter we only could drink half the cup. They added a 20% gratuity into the bill. The worst issue is that when I later brought the issue to MGT, they were indifferent and did not respond. WHEN ONE PAYS $72 DOLLARS for bitter tea and finger foods they can not eat, it is something to look at! A fair exchange between consumer and the business is what a consumer deserves. When shortcomings are brought to the attention of the business and they do not even respond, it points to concerns. I would not encourage this as a place to support as they are riding on an old reputation and clearly demonstrate a total lack of delivering a fair exchange! Really lousy place! read more

I so wanted to like this place. The dining room is immaculate old classic hotel regalness. But don't let all the empty tables fool you. After being turned away two Sundays mornings once for daring to want to dine half an hour before closing and then a few months later visit for not making reservations. We finally had our reservations thinking we would have a table. Well, we were shown to a half-full dining room and they fought us for dare asking for a table that wasn't to the side by the kitchen. I seriously think they spend more time not seating people than accommodating those that do show. We never saw most of the empty tables get used. The pics of the food look good but it was just ok and with all the hassle of them not wanting us it was frankly underwhelming and not worth the trouble. read more

Came here on a Wednesday night for a birthday dinner. The place was empty and I started thinking 'why is no one here'. The ambience is very nice and has an upscale feel to it. We were seated by the piano and Jordan, our server, explained the menu and was very professional. We ordered our food and enjoyed the relaxed environment and being able to converse without all the noise that other restaurants have. It was great! Now for the food. Started with the Cobb salad - it was one the best Cobb salad I have had. The greens were fresh and it was dressed perfectly. The tomatoes were had a delicate sweetness to them and went great with the bacon, avocado, and blue cheese. Blackened Gulf Prawns- Now this is a gem of a dish. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and was seasoned with a good Cajun type of rub and the Avocado added a creaminess and the Tomato coulis calmed the spice a little. It was such an interesting contrast of flavors and was delicious. Definitely need to get this dish! Lobster Mac & Cheese- this was probably my favorite overall. The Mac and cheese was so good and had bread crumbs toasted on top for some texture. This dish though absolutely had lobster in it and you could taste it. So good!! Chantrelle Ravioli- this was a tasty plate of ravioli. We didn't even think about the fact that we got two types of pasta, but it worked out. The ravioli had a good texture and were just a touch below al dente. Beef Cheeks- this was the hearty entree of the evening. Straight meat and potatoes done in a classic preparation. You really get the wine flavor and the beef was fork tender. Overall, this is a gem of a place and if you are lookin for good food or date night, give it a shot it will be worth it. read more

Had dinner here for my wife's birthday. She had the ravioli, which was very good. I had lamb chops and they were just ok. My medium-rare was more medium-well and they were a bit dry. The sauce on top was amazing tho. I was also supposed to get truffle fingerling potatoes as an accompaniment but ended up with country style breakfast potatoes. I called the waiter's attention to it and he confirmed that they were actually out of the truffle fingerling style and brought me garlic mashed. Not a huge deal, but for a $40 dish, don't try sneaking breakfast fries in on me. And they could dim the lights a bit for better ambiance like the bar. read more

Planning a romantic mystery date for my husband, at the last minute in Portland, proved to be more of a challenge than I thought. The recommendation by the concierge of the Hotel Monaco was booked for my time slot (7pm), so I had to dig around, that was until I came upon Gracie's. I booked my res for 7, then later stopped by there to check it out. One look and it was love at first sight. Located in the Hotel Deluxe, itself a great destination with an amazing retro cocktail bar, everything, very old school elegant, friendly, top of the line, classic film experience. The food was delicious, carefully prepared, the attentive presentation and obvious care made my mystery date a stellar evening my husband said he would never forget. Like with so many things, one only gets from experiences as much as one is willing to give to it. We enjoy getting dressed up to go out, we enjoy fashion. Therefore, we try to get the most from places by dressing according to what we believe to be there in its heyday. Dinner jackets, shiny shoes, high heels, lipstick never killed anyone. I used to love this place. Gorgeous venue with fresh homemade food. Now, with almost no staff, food out of a can (vegetable hash) our server was unpleasant and never checked on us after receiving food to fill our drinks or bring our check. We had to almost yell for him to come over and then he had an attitude about even giving us our bill. If that wasn't bad enough, they have added a "kitchen appreciation" charge!!! What the Heck?? I'm staying at the Hotel Deluxe and chose to have dinner at Gracies here at the hotel. I'm SOOO Glad I did- because this was an absolute treat to my tastebuds. To begin with the restaurant is beautiful. I took pics of the gorgeous decor. I've stayed here before with my company but don't remember it being so comfortable yet elegant. I ordered a white Riesling from the Rogue Valley- it was delicious and along with my first glass I had the most delicious wilted spinach salad with freshly made bacon and cheeses all throughout. My entree was the salmon filet with the most amazing succotash nestled underneath. When my salmon arrived I meant to take a pic but I was so excited to dive into that salmon that the pic was taken after a couple bites- lol. Let's start with the salmon was right from the pan- piping hot- and the skin- I seldom eat the skin because it's just not perfectly crispy but this was absolutely perfect! The seasoning was spot on- nothing was needed to compliment this dish. It was fresh and seasonal and so amazing. Why can't it be this way with salmon on the menu in my neck of the woods? I eat salmon at every place that it's offered and it's never been this good - my colleagues came and joined me later and I got a pic of one of the lighter fare which is was a grilled cheese and crab sandwich with a bisque soup- forgot what it was called- my other colleague got the steamer clams and said they were delicious too. I am excited that our education director tells us that we will be using this hotel for many of our future classes- I want to try the wrapped scallops if they're still on the menu in my next visit. Thank you Gracies for a wonderful evening and the most delicious food. All the servers were amazing- each and every server gave guests suggestions and knew the menu inside and out. No ho hum servers here- they give the best customer service I've seen in years. My servers name was Shaina- she was so attentive, helpful, on point the whole evening! Oooooo, I feel bad about writing this review because the service was so absolutely fantastic, but the food was .... I want to brush my teeth just thinking about it. I decided to eat here during Portland Dining Month (June) (3 courses for $25 at participating restaurants) because I know I never would any other time. I don't frequent hotel restaurants unless I'm staying in them, and even then my desire to do so is lukewarm at best. Made reservations for a Wednesday after work, got there early so stopped in the hotel bar (Driftwood Room) for a drink. I actually LOVE this little bar but you have to let your eyes get adjusted to the darkness cause it's like you're stepping into a freaking cave. It feels a little dangerous. That's probably why I like it ;) just kidding, just kidding. We were seated promptly for our table of four and immediately ordered a bottle of wine. We all pretty much knew what we wanted to order so after the wine came, we got down to business. (all ordered off the PDM menu) Gorgonzola cheesecake - this was the best thing we got to eat at the table. It could've been served with more bread, but who are we kidding, I would've eaten that shit slathered all over my big toe. Deviled egg trio - man, all 4 of us should've just ordered the gorgonzola cheesecake, but nooooooooo, we had to be different. It's deviled eggs. That's all it is. Just a little bit fancy, with crab on one and bacon on the other. Make it at home. This is where it gets bad. Grilled Carlton Farms Pork Chop with Gnocchi - you know that sound your throat makes when you're trying to swallow a big bite of a scone and halfway through you realize that thing ain't going down without some water? It's a big "GULP" and then it gets lodged in your esophagus? No? Well then you should try the pork chop. You'll know what I mean. I swear this thing was the driest piece of swine I have ever encountered. Thank goodness our server was johnny on the spot with refilling my wine glass. Gnocchi was ok, I ate most of that. Pepper Crusted Double R Ranch NY Steak - see above, except instead of swine, it's bovine. Seared Ocean Scallops with Wild Mushroom Risotto - my friend said it was okay, but I caught that fishy aroma before it even came out the kitchen. I don't eat scallops but I know it's not supposed to smell like ... well, really fishy. Chef's Risotto - Chef's whimsy daily - whew mama, this one was a doozy. I thought it was a mushroom risotto but not like the one that came with the scallops. She took one bite and pushed it away. We ALL took one bite and should've slapped each other for not believing her. It had a very unique tangy taste, that was not palatable in the least. Chef should've kept his whimsy to himself that day. BUT, like I said before, the service was AMAZING. We told the waiter the risotto was not the hit so he grabbed who I thought was the manager and she comped her meal and offered to give her a new entree. read more

I was impressed with the food and service! My party had not arrived yet and I was a few minutes early but they offered me to take a seat at the table. Our waiter had the best customer service! Jordan was very thorough in describing us the menu and which were his favorites. He gave our party enough time to get settled in and even had us look over the dessert menu in case any of us wanted to change our minds on which dessert we chose. The food was delicious! And I regret not trying the wine pairing! I haven't had the bet experience with wine pairing but friends who did opt in for it say it was well worth it. There were no left overs on my plate. And here I go, walking in where I clearly don't belong, shamelessly brandishing my library books and frizzy bangs, as the dowagers at the next table give me a class-level dressing-down. Sorry, ladies, this seat is taken. It felt weird to talk in there, and I muffled several bursts of laughter, trying to keep our conversation quiet. But to be honest, I would have marked all of this up to country-club charm if not for a couple of disappointments. The salad and soup course was just peachy. Lovely plating. Nice flavors. Our server was very sweet, and her demure demeanor reflected the classy scheme. The dour dowagers and their giant jewelry finished up and left. My hopes were sky-high. Our next dishes came quickly and together, but one dish simply never came. Of the two items we did get, the braised lamb arrived lukewarm. It tasted fine, maybe a little dull, but would have been much better hot. As for the missing dish, we ate and wondered, and waited and wondered. We picked at our food for a while. We nursed our $10 drinks. It was not until we were ready for dessert that our server noticed we were one dish shy, and by that time it was too late. We hadn't reminded her, and didn't really mind, but we did have room for a Ruby Jewel dessert. Unfortunately, we did later find that missing dish on the bill at the end. Both of us being lovers not fighters, we paid the extra $14 for mushrooms we never ate, and tipped on the whole bill like decent humans do. I guess you could say I'm picking that fight now, though. So anyway. It's lovely, it's charming, and were it in any other city (Las Vegas comes to mind), I'd likely think it was pretty good. I've heard it has a nice brunch, and you can get reservations. Positives. If you're in the hood, though, and looking for maybe a nice date night, I'd pick the Driftwood Room instead, for all the class but less of the fuss. read more

In Portland, this is as nice as it gets -and service to boot. Someone can propose to me in this restaurant and I'd actually consider saying "yes", because at least they had taste. Low jazz playing in the background. The only things missing are fine bone china, silver service, and crystal glasses. But still it's historically correct because the deco period reflected low cost items with superior quality design. The food was good too- the hollandaise sauce was correct. The other patrons weren't loud as one would expect at "it" places. TG! If you're looking to be snooty, don't come here. Its not a place for you to behave like an ass. I've had happy hour here several times, and I've always walked away just meh. Never enough to write a review either way, mostly because I thought it was just me not liking the drinks they offer. I admit, I'm a bit of the opposite of a drink snob. I like sweet, simple drinks without bitters or anything like that. All their drinks have some kind of fancy something going on and it was just not worth the price. The happy hour food is a good selection, if just slightly above average pricing and average taste. However, what prompted me to write this review is brunch. My friend had been dying to go here for the bread pudding french toast so we decided to make a meal of it and six of us went to savor what should have been an amazing meal for what the prices were. I walked in and the first thing I noticed is the smell. Just like where my grandma used to live. Then I looked around and was thrown back in time for a second because the people looked like where my grandma used to live. We were by decades the youngest group in the restaurant. I was just hoping the food didn't taste like where grandma used to live. I could keep going with the retirement community theme, but I'll spare you. My friends who had the french toast bread pudding stuff really enjoyed their meal. The rest of us were not as impressed. Mostly, I was pissed at the size of my portion. Look, half the time I can't even finish my eggs benedict, let alone the potatoes. For 18 freaking dollars, you think it wouldn't be a problem. Nope. The portion was tiny and I was able to eat it and the potatoes and was hungry a few hours later. Normally brunch fills me up for over half a day. The hollandaise (here I go again) was like what they used to serve at my grandma's place. Bland but palatable. Tasted like melted butter, which I do love butter, but still. I want some flavor to the hollandaise.The eggs were poached to perfection, so that made me happy, but the crab and bay shrimp cake underneath was paltry. Plus, it was just so tiny! I tried Gracie's for the first time using a LivingSocial deal for two small plates and cocktails for two. It was a treat! The atmosphere is intimate and elegant, the food is delicious, the valet parking was free, and the service was good. We initially ordered the quail (it was good, but very small) and the lamb (very good) off the small plates menu, and the "bittersweet symphony" cocktail (which is a tasty bourbon concoction). A few things you should know before going for the first time: (1) Attire: You should wear semi-dressy attire. The LivingSocial deal didn't mention anything about a dress code, so it's a good thing my boyfriend and I decided to dress up for dinner without knowing about it. (I wore a dress, a blazer and flats; he wore a button-down shirt [tucked in] and jeans with nice shoes.) (2) Reservations: The LIvingSocial deal doesn't mention anything about making a reservation, but when I visited Gracie's website the day before we were going to eat there, I saw they really wanted you to make a reservation. We booked a table on Sunday at 6pm, but that was pretty futile, because there were only two other tables occupied the entire time we were there. I don't know if you really need to make a reservation or not (3) Small plates: The two small plates and the cocktails were delicious but definitely not enough for dinner. After we finished the quail and the lamb, plus the cocktail -- which was the extent of the LivingSocial deal -- we were still hungry, so any other food or drinks we ordered afterward were up to us. I expected this to happen, but I'm just mentioning it in case anyone wants to know about the portion sizes. So, we ordered the vegetable risotto and the pork belly, too. Both were excellent.
