The location was really nice, and the evening weather was a nice sunset. We were given the choice to sit outside, and did. Then the food choices.... The catch of the day and most of the seafood choices were overpriced. $50 and above, for fish (standing menu and catch of day)...that is a bit exuberant.. We had a Table of 4, for a 93yr old mom's birthday celebration. I mentioned it to The hostess, and she said that they would "do something special". The rest of the menu and resulting food was standard fair and average quality, at best. A good ole gulf rain storm blew thru, but we and the other 3 outdoor tables elected to sit tight and dine in the 15-20 rain storm, under the very small table umbrellas (smaller than the table they are over) ... larger umbrellas is a recommendation for the restaurant. They should cover the entire table and the seats. I asked the hostess if they could do something for our birthday girl, when they were seating my party, and she said "oh yes of course, We can sing and we'll give her a nice cake too". We each had a standard menu-item or salad, with a fish or oyster add-on and a glass of wine. Birthday girl had a margarita. The wine came in plastic cups... like we were drinking in the parking lot at 7-11. Wine quality was on par with the plastic cups.. The wine choices were average or below, USA wine. Margarita tasted like straight-up food lion lime-ade. When the cake came, the staff was too afraid to venture out in the rain, so they put a slice in a plastic box and plopped in on the table... no happy birthday or congratulations for turning 93. The chef, manager, owner, nor head waiter didn't even come out to say thank you to those who braved the rain, nor the 93 year old. Treat your customers better, like you're VERY appreciative that they are there. Make sure they are truly enjoying the food (the atmosphere is a given)... ....otherwise stop trying to be a restaurant, you're just a bar... read more

I would love to get a 5 but everything was not quite as good as it used to be. The ownership is new from pre hurricane and the Sysco rep walked by us as we were seated. Great seafood spot on Sanibel Island. We went early on a Sunday evening and were told there would be a 30 minute wait for outside but were given the option to eat at a table by the bar. We took the inside option. Our server Nick was absolutely fabulous! He recommended the bacon wrapped shrimp which was our favorite dish and should not be missed. The coconut shrimp were also good and the fish and chips (which was grouper) was just ok as it was a bit dry. Nick was ever so kind and took time with each of his tables even though he was really hustling and even mixing drinks himself. We would return to this restaurant just to be served by Nick again! We have been coming to this place since the 90s and it NEVER disappoints! NEVER. In fact, when we visit Sanibel even for a short time, we go twice. ABSOLUTELY! At the recommendation of a fellow beachgoer, we visited grandma Dotts. We ordered the seafood platter at the cost of $48 each. Everything on the platter except the crab cake was overcooked. The oysters were cooked dry. The shrimp were tough, even the grouper was overcooked on both sides, so it was like a piece of rubber. We were very disappointed as we were told. It was one of the best places around. We would never go back. Try Timbers, we ate there last night and it was great. read more

Traditional Sanibel restaurant with really great Key Lime Pie! We were in Sanibel for the day, and after wandering through "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge, we found Gramma Dot's. My wife and I ordered four appetizers, and shared. I got the crab meatballs and a salad; my wife ordered a half-pound of peel-and-eat shrimp and a bowl of clam chowder. All were delicious! Then, our server, reading our minds, brought out an absolutely delicious slice of Key Lime Pie. This was an unplanned stop after touring Sanibel and Captiva looking for waterside dining to unwind before heading home. Happy to report the service is first rate. Everyone there gives you the sense that they care about your experience, so kudos to management. Started with a freindly greeting by a service sweeping up after a messy party to another server showing us to a table immediately. The food is where I think this came up a little short, in truth. Apps were the Crabmeat balls and a great start. Our server then told us about the evening special which was a 'Parmesan/Garlic Grouper' dinner which sounds a lot better than it was. The fish ended up dry and I'm not sure why. Wouldn't order again. The second entree were the breaded oysters and they're enjoyable. An easy deep fry and full of flavor. We have own a condo on Sanibel for over 30 ears, and Gramma Dots has always been on our favorite list. Their Keylime pie has always been a highlight. We stopped by just before lunchtime to pick up two pieces of pie to take home. Even the high price of $7.99 per slice we thought it would be worth it because the Pie is usually so exceptional. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The crust was not crisp and headed the dreaded soggy bottom. The pie itself are usually a lovely light yellow/lime green color was actually turning brown and the edges were not soft, but getting stiff. It appeared this Pie had been left over from the night before. It was not a pleasurable experience eating the pie at that price. We were very disappointed. If you do decide to order the Keylime pie, which usually has been very good I would urge you to make sure it was from a fresh pie and not one that had been left over. We will really have to consider whether we ever go back which is a disappointment for us. read more

My rating for 1 Star is only due to the Clam Chowder being good and served hot. Tuna Melt was served on a hamburger bun with not much tuna which was bland as will as the homemade chips. My husband ordered the Grouper which was good but very small side servings. Our meals were not worth the price that we paid. I believe this resturant is a favorite for locals that would receive a good meal but if your a tourist not so. I do not understand what all the hype was about on this restaurant. After my recent vacation to Sanibel and Captiva Islands with my family, I'm still thinking about a few yummy spots where we visited. One of which is Gramma Dots. If you order nothing else here, make sure you get their homemade kettle chips. Truly the best chips of my life. If you're hungry for more, some vegetarian-friendly options that we enjoyed were the Spring Salad and Chef Mitch's Vegetarian Pasta. Those who aren't vegetarian would love the traditional fish and chips. Highly recommend enjoying any of the above outside overlooking the Sanibel Marina.
