Having enjoyed this place in the past, we came here our first night in Sanibel with high expectations. What we got was very poor service (worst experience of the whole trip) and mediocre food. With the waitress's recommendation, I got their special, which was parmesan-crusted, which sounded good and was a nice large piece of fish but the parmesan quickly got tiresome and very one-note as it completely overwhelmed the fish. I wanted the sampler and she talked me out of it, saying it was way too big for one person. So? But it was the service that really set us against this place. I guess on this night they were having the Kentucky Derby on a TV behind the counter. And that was all the service staff was into, just standing behind the counter loudly cheering on their favorite horse. Perhaps there was some betting going on or something but we didn't see our waitress for the entire time this was happening. Finally we just flagged down someone, anyone, to get us more water. It was insulting and rude and uncalled for to focus on a TV behind the counter and ignore the customers. We left kind of mad and frustrated after having to go to the counter for our check because apparently our waitress had clocked out and left!!! How insulting is that?? Spent over $100 and were treated rudely (and we are good customers and tip well). We were planning to eat here again but no way. I do not recommend this restaurant. Much friendlier, attentive service can be found at so many better places. read more

Returning to Sanibel after about 9 years and had to hit up Gramma Dot's for dinner! Same great location and same amazing food and service! We enjoyed it so much we came back for a second visit - definitely our favorite restaurant on the island this trip. First dinner most of had burgers, which were amazing. Cooked perfectly to temp and very flavorful and I'm pretty dang picky about my burgers. My daughter had fish bites or something similar and really enjoyed them while my son got the grouper dinner - he said it was the best grouper he's had. We live in Clearwater and he works at a fish market so that's some pretty high praise! Second visit we had a variety of things, with me having the crab cakes which really were outstanding. We took a day trip down from Sarasota. We picked Gramdma Dots to eat. The restaurant is located at the Sanibel Marina. I had the grouper fish and chips. The fish was definitely fresh but not my kind of fish and chips. I prefer beer battered cod. The Tatar sauce and cocktail sauce tasted homemade.... I am I used to and prefer the standard recipe. Jaycell, our server, was perfect. The restaurant was clean. I think if I came backed I'd get the fried shrimp or scallops. Both looked amazing! read more

We have own a condo on Sanibel for over 30 ears, and Gramma Dots has always been on our favorite list. Their Keylime pie has always been a highlight. We stopped by just before lunchtime to pick up two pieces of pie to take home. Even the high price of $7.99 per slice we thought it would be worth it because the Pie is usually so exceptional. Unfortunately, this was not the case. The crust was not crisp and headed the dreaded soggy bottom. The pie itself are usually a lovely light yellow/lime green color was actually turning brown and the edges were not soft, but getting stiff. It appeared this Pie had been left over from the night before. It was not a pleasurable experience eating the pie at that price. We were very disappointed. If you do decide to order the Keylime pie, which usually has been very good I would urge you to make sure it was from a fresh pie and not one that had been left over. We will really have to consider whether we ever go back which is a disappointment for us. read more

We loved Gramma Dot's so much that we came back twice on our trip in Sanibel! First time we came we pulled up and were happy that this restaurant had a great water view in a marina. We didn't have any problems finding parking. We walked up and the hostess showed us a table outside, which was great because it was right by fans and had a great water view. It's very quaint with seating inside and outside and you automatically feel like you're on vacation (or at least I did). After looking over the menu, my kiddo was pleased to see they had Kraft mac and cheese on the menu. My husband ordered a bowl of their lobster bisque. The price was very reasonable. I was jealous that I didn't order the lobster bisque, but luckily he saved me some. It was thick, rich, and creamy, and had chunks of plump lobster. For entrees, I went with the grouper sandwich blackened. It was delicious, not overly seasoned. THe grouper was fresh and delicious. It came with homemade chips, which were great. For dessert we ordered a piece of their key lime pie, which was tart and sweet and delicious. The second visit, we came for lunch, seated outside on the opposite side, which was nice. I ordered the lobster bisque, which was amazing. It was over 90 degrees outside and while I was hot, the lobster bisque was too good to pass up. My husband ordered the crab meatballs for an appetizers. They were good, but not my cup of tea. For lunch I ordered their special, which was blackened snapper with a pineapple salsa. It was sooooo good. The snapper was light and flakey, it was seasoned to perfection, and the salsa was divine. My kiddo had the Kraft Mac and cheese again, and loved it all. Pros: -Great lobster bisque -Fresh seafood options -Beautiful outdoor area -Great service (our drinks never went empty!) First of all I stand by my original review, but after today's visit I just had to express my gratitude for the service I received. Ok, no less than three employees stopped by my table in a span of 10 minutes to ask if everything was to my liking. That's what I call great customer service!! Great service, great food, great setting, and competitive prices are the reasons, I recommend one puts Gramma Dot's Restaurant on their "Must Visit" list when planning on coming to Sanibel. As a point of interest, they're located at the Sanibel Marina. It's nice to stroll the dock looking at the amazing boats after your meal. BTW, my lobster roll I ordered this visit was delicious!! We saw good reviews and were excited to try Grandma Dots for dinner. My group consisted of my mom 83, me 67, my daughter 33 and my grandson 3. The ambience is beautiful. We 1st ordered Clam Chowder, it stated the best around. Haha, well, it was good at first taste but lacked class and potato throughout. Good not nowhere best ever. Dinners arrived. Unfortunately, Not one of us liked our dinners at all. We left them all there. Disgusting. I had Lobster Roll. Frozen dried out pieces of lobster meat, tasteless. My moms steak was full of grizzle and she could not eat it. My daughter's Sesame Tuna tasted, frozen and over cooked, she could not eat it. A HUGE let down! A total waste of time and money. Ambiance - homey and open feel. Ordered seafood platter and it was very delicious and flavorful. It comes with a large fillet of grilled grouper, about 6 large fried Gulf shrimp, 5 pieces of small fried oysters, potato croquette, small container of cut fruit and green beans/bell pepper/carrots. Oyster had a thin and crispy coating and the oyster was so tender and sweet tasting. Same with the shrimp, thin and crunchy costing leaving shrimp juicy and so good. The crab cake was a lump of real crab- crispy on the outside and all goodness in the middle. The potato croquette was so flavorful and addicting. Green beans & veggies Compliments the grouper. Fish was grilled perfectly. Downside - service. After My food was served, the staff never checked on me or if I needed anything else unlike the other tables where they were very attentive. Too bad the food doesn't match the ambiance. This restaurant is exactly the style of place I seek out on vacation. Surrounded by beautiful yachts, palm trees, and bistro style outdoor seating. So I was so disappointed when it wasn't the complete package. I had the blackened grouper salad. The fish was cold and very dry. It was very bland. Ugh. The salad it self was just average. The key lime pie was also just average. It's partially made in house. The crust is a purchased Keebler crust but the filling is made here. It was just too tart for my taste but most would enjoy it.
