Reviewing our first visit: Tomato focaccia: delicious! Salty, olive oily, slightly-crispy-outside-with-a-chewy-inside goodness. Vegetarian pizza: okay. With several great pizza options in the East Bay, I don't think we'd come back for this. The crust was flakey. The toppings and sauce were fine. Soy latte: not a favorite. I wouldn't order coffee here again. Maybe it was just an off day? The prices seemed reasonable (except maybe for the $38 quiche, which we didn't order -- maybe it's huge...or extra delicious?) The service was a little...confused, but friendly. We got asked twice (and pleasantly) what drink we wanted and then had to remind the server/cashier what food we had ordered while we were being rung up. The menu displays were not very helpful. The outside sign shows what pizzas are available, but we didn't see another list of everything that's offered (no signs/cards identifying the baked goods, no list of sandwiches, we think some diners were eating salads but there was no salad menu). It's nice to see this shop trying to make a go of it in this area. We hope the new year is a good one for them! read more

I'm not much of a ratings person, but I am making an exception for Gran Cafe Milan. They are amazing!! The food is so incredibly fabulous that I feel like a kid in a candy store every time I go in. Everything in there is worthy of praise and the staff is so kind and helpful. Not only is their food delicious, but their pastries are simply to die for. I have been there many times and I have never, ever, been disappointed -- and neither will you! Don't let the fact that this hidden gem is in an industrial type complex sway you. Love the Pastries. Would gave them a 5 star but their regular coffee, not the mix drinks, is subpar. Not sure what coffee brand they are using but almost taste like it was from a can! I must admit though, I am a Peet's coffee drinker so in comparison their coffee taste weak (imo). read more

After seeing reviews on NextDoor, we decided to check this place since there is someone in the house addicted to cannoli. The food on display reminded me of places in Sorrento or Amalfi...and that's a very good thing. While our pizza was cooking, we worked on dessert first. The cannoli wasn't 5-star, but was good. It would be better if freshly filled. The cannoncini - a custard filled and flaky pastry was great! But then there's the 14" pepperoni pizza - a moment of silence please. Fresh, hot and thin. The sauce was heavenly with flavor unlike anything I've had in gourmet ghetto or Albany. I will be back MANY times. read more

The food is absolutely outstanding, from the superb Italian imported 5-country coffee to the work of the incredibly good Italian chef, this is not just worth a detour, it is a destination in its own right! Salads (be they nicoise, Greek, or most interesting Spinach) are delicious with house-made, world class fresh dressings. And the sun dried tomato crostine served with these salads are just over the top. Sandwiches and quiches are superb, the pannini with spinach pesto is a delight, and the multigrain croissants (with or without honey filling) are deadly good with a caffe breve (of course it is made with cream!). Having just returned from central France, I was prepared for Gran Milan, but not prepared to find it in my back yard! Impossible to find unless you know Jacuzzi street (and yes, this is the Jacuzzi street of Jacuzzi hot tubs fame, they were founded as a water pump manufacturer here on what was once the water's edge back in the '20's). Tiny with only a few tables inside and out, with a terrible view of the (actually quite good) body shop across the way. read more

You have to deliver great food worthy of a destination if your restaurant is going to be located near the back of an industrial complex, across from an auto-body shop, off of a utility road parallel to the freeway...and Gran Milan delivers exactly that. The pastries are delicious. I've purchased so many of them and make an effort to try new ones. The olive bread sticks are reason enough to keep coming back, and I do every week or more. The owners provide a level of customer service you won't find at your typical chain cafe. When they aren't making the pastries they come out and greet people with a handshake and recognize repeat customers. It's out of the way but well worth the trip, especially when they have special event foods. read more

a point isabel friend recommended, so I stop by whenever I'm out with my chessie/boxer gal pal. for a tiny cafe in an industrial complex, their ready to eat and drink selections are vibrant! freshly baked and freshly made. speaking of fresh these guys are fresh off the Mediterranean boat, so I the quality andtaste are differentthantheusual. they have salads sandwiches and pizzas too as well as coffee and espresso drinks. and I will always give my time to any handsome man with an Italian accent! The first chocolate croissant I got here was incredible. I've gotten 3 more since then and they're skimpier each time. Today the one I got had about 1 teaspoon of chocolate at one end. So, I guess I'm done with gran milan's chocolate croissants, which is for the best, for obvious reasons. read more

The restaurant is great! It is located in an out-of-the-way location surrounded by warehouses. It is easy to miss the location and not visible from the street. However, it is worth finding. The food is excellent; Italian pastries and sandwiches are the specialties. The staff is warm and friendly; the location itself is cozy with both indoor and outdoor seating. I recently tried this place with my partner and his mother for the first time. The Prosciutto Di Parma sandwich I ordered had some amazing flavors and the focaccia bread was AMAZING but I was disappointed that one side of the bread was completely soggy and not deliciously crispy like the other piece of bread on the sandwich. All three of us ordered lattes and they were a huge disappointment. No foam at all, and it was served to us lukewarm. I tried one of the berry tarts and it was delicious and had a fabulous crust which many bakeries don't get right. I haven't made up my mind if I'll come back yet; if I do it'll probably just be for the pastries. read more

Really delicious panini and pizzas! Love their assortment of pastries. What I don't love is the customer service on the weekends. The older lady will answer the calls but as soon as she gets a walk-in customer, she will place you on hold mid order and never come back to the call. Hence, no order takes place. She does not understand how to prioritize and that it's extremely rude to ignore callers once you've already begun taking orders. The owners should seriously consider replacing her or demand that she learn basic business phone etiquette. If you have already answered a call, complete the order then tend to your queue! Thrilled we found this gem and soooo worth the trip. Took my Mom (born/raised in Italy) and she said she'd have sworn she was enjoying items from a cafe along Via Fillungo in the heart of Lucca. Tiny little place in an industrial area of Richmond near Albany. Tried it for lunch, and you know what they say about first impressions... The food was very good (though not over the top). My veggie panini was hot pressed and yummy (though I think there was mayonnaise?!). And the Milan style hot chocolate was perfect for the drizzly day. But the service! Ivo (I think it was he) delivered with a flourish, and then when he took away the plates a little too soon, he (very unnecessarily) returned with a small pasty. So of course he endeared himself to me. Three-ish tables indoors, and a few outdoors. He promises more wind protection soon! read more

This is a great find! I haven't tried them all, but one of pastry with thin layer stuffed with ricotta cheese and orange zest (?) is just an art. The layer is something I did not think I can find in a local pastry. Olive budget is great. What's amazing is their pizza. It's hard to find real Italian pizza with thin dough and greatest sauce. The sauce is sweeter than our other favorite place, Gioia on Hopkins. It's very tasty. They close at 7pm so we have to be quick if we want to grab it for dinner. I think 3 guys in the kitchen are Italian. The only unfortunate thing is one of casher girl who has a lot of make up. I don't care about the make up if she provides a good service. I just felt she was an unfortunate part of the greatest cafe that I found recently. read more

Located in an industrial complex directly across from an autobody shop, this bakery makes fantastic sfogliatelle.

I don't know why they're stuck away near an auto body shop on Jacuzzi, but o dear me, I had a couple of exquisite pieces of pastry today: apple slices over frangipani on puff pastry, and a big slice of foccaccia-type bread with onions and onion jam (a pissaladiere-type thing) that was delicious. I also had a chocolate-custard-filled chocolate eclair, but it was a little over the top even for me--- although I'll certainly try the plain-custard-filled eclair soon! It's a pleasant little nook inside, with a friendly young woman at the counter, and the prices are extremely reasonable, given the really high quality of the pastry. read more

I'll start by saying that this little place is still clearly in its infancy and that I will go back to try more of what looks like some REALLY delicious stuff. That said, I went there today for breakfast because I'd read the reviews and was craving a sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. The breakfast sandwiches were pre-made and the 15 year-old behind the counter did not know what was on them, so he said he had to ask someone. He stared at the sandwiches for a few awkward seconds until I said, "okay, yeah, ask her" as I pointed to the young lady right behind him. She was not too sure either. When I asked if they had any sausage sandwiches, she offered salami instead. Not the same, lady. I guess they didn't have any sausage or just interchange the two clearly different meats. Moving on she told me they were all ham, egg, and mozzarella, (even though I could see clearly that at least one was a turkey sandwich) and that the smaller sandwiches (the 'buns', I suppose) had bacon on them. One of the buns had sesame seeds on it (fine with me) and she said that one has peppers and one has tomato. I opted for the sando with the peppers and also ordered some of the delicious-looking onion focaccia (to go). Kid at the counter rang me up and the total was $8 and change. Total came to $9+ after tip. I felt bad for the kid and thought maybe it was his first day. My sandwich took about 4 minutes to come out and while the bread was nearly hot, the rest of it was cold. Fine for peppers and turkey (it wasn't ham, just as salami isn't sausage), but for eggs over easy, not so much. Oh well, I asked her for some napkins and took a bite. The sandwich itself was rather mundane with the peppers lending little flavor. The freshly baked bread (couple hours old) warmed up the egg enough that it was edible and not too bad. The mozz had good consistency and was decent. Overall, it was rather filling. They served it on a plastic plate and as I was recycling mine, the young lady came over to the next table to take their plates. I noticed she put the plate up behind the counter, so I'm not sure if she reused it or kept it to recycle, or what, but that seemed odd to me. At any rate, I asked for my focaccia (don't know why she didn't just give it to me with my sandwich, I mean what if I forgot it?!) and I was on my way, full, but not too impressed with what I'd eaten. In the car I thought to myself that they should wrap the focaccia up in paper instead of putting it in a big plastic container. Oh well, at least it wasn't styrofoam. I guess they are much more of a bakery than a breakfast place, so next time I will get a quiche (looked amazing) and maybe go get a pizza for dinner ($8.50 for a 14" cheese!) The overall atmosphere is nice and clean, the staff is friendly (albeit a bit awkward on account of the teenage boy). You can see the bakery in back with a couple of guys making pizzas. Everything they have in their cases looks delicious and smells fresh and so I will certainly give this place another try in a bit after they work out some of their growing pains. Good luck to this little hole-in-the-wall mom and pop!! Pro tip: Don't give up on parking. It's limited up front but there is more in the back of this little industrial plaza. read more

Went in for a late lunch around 1:30, customers outside eating, looked really good. We had a personal pizza, chicken, cheese and calamata olives, etc. Very light and the crest was so light. Also had a greek salad, and shared. Waitress was so kind and offered to toss it as it was in a togo container. Served really nicely with the shared pizza. Very cozy, pastries were to die for, cant wait to try more of them. Service, food and space was clean, friendly and cozy. read more

Run, do not walk, to this place for lunch or a morning snack. Hard to find, located next to an auto body shop on Jacuzzi, a street you'd never be on unless you were going somewhere located on it or trying to avoid the Central Avenue/freeways mess. I had lunch: choice of pizza and a few sandwiches. I had a vegetarian Panini (oddly, they call it a sandwich), grilled, served with a small mixed green salad. It was eggplant, squash, tomato and cheese, all melted on focaccia (choice of breads). Delicious. $6.50, which is a steal. I'd ask for a little extra salad dressing. When I broke the apricot sugar cookie I selected for dessert (handling the prongs), the owner gave it to me for free. Only a few seats, four can sit outside, where it is pleasant, but there is some ambient noise from the body shop and freeway. Probably most business is to go. Pastries and other items looked excellent as well. This is the sort of spot we need to support to add some class to El Cerrito/Richmond. read more
