Grana is charming and open year round, so I go there a lot. And I really want to love it, but it's hit or miss. Sometimes pizza is excellent, other times it's too soggy. However, 2 days ago I ordered the margarita with salami, and couldn't eat more than 1 slice. They changed the red sauce and it was too tart and the mozzarella was too sparse to cover it up. I took it home since we barely touched the pie, but 2 days later and it's still in my fridge, untouched. The octopus and arugula salad was sandy. Our waitress who seemed very busy, even though there were only 4 seated tables and 3 servers, never came up to us unless called and never asked if everything was okay and why we barely touched our food. So very very disappointing the last time,but I'm hoping it was just a one off, a bad day. read more

After a morning at the Mattituck Strawberry Festival, my girlfriend and I required sustenance (something other than strawberries and fried food). Truth be told, I first heard about Grana months ago from Newsday with their ranking of pizza places on the island. Since then, I was trying to find the time to come here as it's not the closest place for my girlfriend or myself. But being in neighboring Mattituck made it a great opportunity, and it really was the perfect experience. From the outside, Grana has a brick front that looks a little worn which adds to the feel before you enter. There are a few tables with umbrellas before entering giving you the ability to sit in the sun. We chose the inside and upon entry we felt like we had gone off to old world Italy. The wall to the left has a beautiful painted image of the restaurant. The tables vary in type (some have designed tiles and some are finished wood) and there's several high top seats at the bar with plenty of wine bottles lining the right wall. Straight ahead is the beautiful wood fired pizza oven burning away. Soothing Frank Sinatra music played as we choose what we wanted to eat. One pie would suffice our appetite and the very friendly and helpful waitress gave us guidance on what to choose. We went with the Nofo (topped with tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, Duroc pork sausage, and wood roasted onions) and were extremely satisfied with it. The pizza was thin and light with wonderful sliced pieces of sausage and amazing flavor from the onions. We finished the entire thing and were completely satisfied with our meal from a food, ambiance, service, and price standpoint. I just want to add one odd but awesome note: the bathroom was one of the most beautifully decorated wash rooms I have ever had the opportunity to use. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about Grana and I might even make the trek out to Jamesport just for this (and to try some of their dinner options). read more

Being the native New Yorker pizza snob that I am, I was skeptical about that this was the best brick oven pizza my friend's boss had ever had. However, after spending an hour and change picking strawberries and then going to a winery to drink, I wasn't about to be picky. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the pizza was. We split a sausage and onions pizza and arugula salad. The sauce was sweet and slightly salty, the cheese was perfect and fresh, and the sausage was delicious and flavorful. You can tell it was quality made, without additives and nitrates. I washed it all down with a Dogfish Head brewery Namaste witebeer. So at that point I was just topping off my good Karma. Guess I was able to nirvana during that meal, because I was totally at peace. Could have also been food coma... not sure which. read more

Dispacable customer service. Waitresses have no idea what's going on and hate being there. No system in place to accommodate seating. Manager is rude and doesn't have basic communication skills. Felt really uncomfortable being here as it looks like they don't cater to you if you don't have blond hair, blue eyes and I'm considered to be "white". I usually don't give a negative yelp review without first trying to remedy the problem with the establishment, but how do you tell someone, "please fix everything"? First, the atmosphere is excruciatingly, ear-bleedingly loud. And, therefore, the waitstaff cannot hear you when you ask for their help to explain why on earth there are three separate menus of "specials" "daily specials" and then, I guess, regular non-special items. Or to bring silverware. Or to take your order. Or to fill a water glass. Onto the food. My "grilled artichoke salad" was four pieces of canned artichokes plopped on overdressed greens with what appeared to be deli slices of swiss cheese. You know, super artisanal. The special "brodetto," which was billed as cod, mussels, octopus, and scallops, was a greasy chowder of unidentifiable bits resembling chum and sliced potatoes to, I don't know, distract? TLDR: Grana (now, apparently re-billed as Via Grana) has taken a turn and is no longer a go-to place for consistent fare. An unpleasant, expensive, and mediocre evening produced by a chef who knows how to write a menu (or three!) but not how to deliver on any promises. read more

Stopped in here on a whim today since we were in the area and so glad we did. A very cute place - small and quaint. The staff was friendly and attentive. We started of sharing a caesar salad which was tasty - though be forewarned if your not a fan of garlic it may be off putting to you. Their homemade dressing has tons of garlic flavor which we loved. Next we shared a pie (about 14") totally shareable after splitting the salad. We choose the Jamesport which had some type of salty and crispy Italian ham and Kalamata olives. Flavors were spot on, the crust had just that right amount of char from the wood burning oven and the ingredients were so fresh. We arrived at Grana at 7:45 last night looking forward to having dinner for two at a place that came recommended. When we got to the door the hostess had us wait for a few minutes while she checked her table chart and then informed us she couldn't seat us for dinner, despite there being empty tables and seats at the bar. Such a disappointment. We went to the petulant wino instead, spent a ton of money and had a great meal and experience. Sorry Grana, our money wasn't green enough for you anyways. Go to petulant wino instead for great food and great service. Edit: I just received a rude and condescending private message from David, at Grana, who was quite insulted that I could possible conceive leaving a review that denigrated their customer service. Your food may be exemplary (I'll never know since your hostess didn't bother to explain that the empty seats were "already reserved"), but your attitude towards the people who drive your business and your success is APPALLING. You should seriously reconsider the way you handle customer reviews. Perhaps then you wouldn't feel the need to send such an "immature" message based on the service received. I'm quite sure that your other negative review relieved the same rude private message that I did. Perhaps you think your food is so good that you feel you are entitled to send such a nasty message- get a grip. And we continued with sharing the fig pizza - big mistaking that is for sharing I wanted it all to myself ! So good !!! I got got the Casoncelli Alla Bergamo - LOVE LOVE LOVE. Hubby enjoyed his pasta ( I don't recall what he got it did have anchovies , not my thing ) but he ate it all up and said it was great. We ate at the bar and the service was very good. Not very impressed with their staff. I understand I didn't make a reservation but as a local who enjoys great restaurants I felt they could have done a better job giving me one of the empty tables ( that were empty the entire time we were wasting). Pizza is not that great when you can get fresh pizza down the block at a vineyard that taste better. The next best place is s few mins away in Greenport called "1943 pizza bar" and they blow them away. No rude hostess and you get a seat to enjoy the best pizza. Stay away from Granna. Go to Jamesport vineyard or 1943 pizza bar. Sad part is I want so bad to eat at Granna but after this last experience my wife said NEVER again. . I live close. Grana, located on the North Fork of Long Island, is the place to visit when you want to enjoy great Italian food served with style. The only problem: deciding whether you want one of their amazing thin crust pizzas (cooked right in front of you in the oven near the bar) or one of the delicious and creative pasta entrees. You can always do what my group did: get a little of everything and share. The fig, carmelized onion and cheese pizza is a wonderful combo of sweet and savory, the margherita pizza is a safe but delicious bet and the beet ravioli was a delicious combination of pasta, cheese and fresh minced beets. I am disappointed to give this review as we had eaten at Grana before, had enjoyed the experience very much and recommended it to friends. We recently had a 6 pm reservation for 4 on a Saturday. They were short-staffed (as all restaurants are) but were very friendly greeting and seating us. Service was good despite being short-handed. Food is very good. However as each of us individually finished our entree's servers came and grabbed the plates. When were all finished the server brought us our check. No option for coffee or dessert. They said they needed the table. It was 7:40. We asked if we could have coffee and were told no. If they want people to come back I would recommend not jamming reservations so close to one another and rudely pushing patrons out the door, especially given this is not a cheap restaurant. It left a very bad taste in our mouths. read more

Came to Grana after a day at the beach and farm stand fun. Was told there would be a 20-30 minute wait, but it seemed worth it. My boyfriend and I were seated after only 10 minutes and brought water with lemon by our awesome waiter, Ted. After reviewing their seasonal menu, we ordered the NOFO pizza (I think that's what it was called) with sausage and onions.. And the fratacelli pasta with the black peppercorn sauce, corn, and pancetta. Oh. My. Goodness. We ate most of the food there but gladly took home our leftover and feasted around midnight. We instantly felt welcome upon walking into Grana. The employees were warm and the ambiance was a fun artsy feel with huge paintings on the wall, mosaic-tiled tables, and a hearth where the pizzas are cooked. We got the fig pizza and marinara pizza, both of which were excellent. Only 4 stars because of a couple small, yet important details: We felt sort of abandoned after receiving our pizza--nobody really came by to check on us and see how things were. While the employees were always friendly, they just did not come around enough after we received our food. Also, the girl who was filling our water glasses held the top of each of our glasses when refilling, right where we'd drink from. It would be nicer to hold the bottom of the glass so we can avoid germs from someone else's hands while we are trying to drink our water. Speaking of the glasses--they were plastic disposable ones, let's be earth-friendly and serve out of reusable glasses, please. This is not a fast-food joint, it is a nicer restaurant. This place was recommended by someone that worked at local vineyard. It was fantastic!! We stopped in for a early dinner on our way to catch the ferry home. Hostess was welcoming. We didn't have a reservation but we're able to get a seat at the bar. (When we left the place was packed, call ahead or come early) The food is awesome. We started with grilled artichoke salad, nice balance of acid in the dressing and the pecorino cheese with the and the grilled artichokes. Next up we shared the burrata ravioli, if was topped with tons of fresh basil, and fresh tomato. Ravioli was homemade with perfect texture and cooked expertly. Light and delicious. Finished off with two tapas options- eggplant meatballs and local zucchini flower appetizer both delicious. We took a pizza home for the ferry ride,fresh figs and caramelized onion with Gorgonzola cream. Awesome. Great local wine list with Italian options as well. A little out dated, first two wines we ordered were out of stock, no big deal, the bartender made excellent recommendations for a replacement. One Downside, and NOT a deal breaker. The food was fantastic and the service was just decent, could be better- bartender never introduce himself - let's call him Justin Bieber. It seemed like he didn't want to be there. When we first sat down he wasn't paying attention, as far as setting us up with silverware before apps or salads came out, share plates, asking for refills on drinks , etc. He seemed to get little better once he got busy. But still when he presented the check, no thank you or name. Again not its deal breaker but usually bar service is better then the dining room, bartenders are usually more attentive (you can see all you customers from where you work). Thank you. Stopped by Grana, hoping for some good thin crust pizza after wine tasting all day. Tried the margherita pizza and was a little disappointed with how soggy it was. There was also about a 3" border of crust around the edge of the entire pizza that had no sauce at all. It was inedible and charred, so that was a waste. The fancy microbrew ginger ale was awful. Small intimate atmosphere with comfortable seating and top of the line service. Affordable and particular wine selection adds to the north fork nostalgia. Bravo to the entire experience. Dessert was five huge double encrusted with jewels stars. Carrot cake and cheese cake take you to a whole new world. Our server Carol was knowledgeable of the menu and wines which made our dining even more enjoyable. We hit it at the right time, but learned reservations are suggested. We can not wait to go back! This is the third time my wife and I have eaten here, and each time we have loved the food! Pizza is the best on Long Island! Pasta dishes are authentic to true Italian food you might get in Italy. Not the crap you get through out Long Island that they call Italian, that being more like Italian American. The combination of ingredients, and the ingredients themselves are what give them the authenticity. I mean shaved botarga, good stuff. Never a disappointment thus far, and this is coming from a chef of 30 years, so glad I found you guys, you are people who truly understand good food, drink, and atmosphere. My only critique with Grana was the service which is why I rated 3 stars. Solely based on food I would give this place 5 stars. We felt neglected as we waited VERY long for our entree that came our cold which we sent back. The table next to us that was seated 15 mins after us were finished with their pasta entrees before we got ours. We weren't served bread (as every other table did). The pizza was incredible (margarita with meatball) and the eggplant fritti appetizer was amazing. Also the waiter's demeanor/apology was rather insincere and cold. I will be coming back to the restaurant due to the great food with hopes that their service is much better! read more
