I'm a chef, native New Yorker, traveler and die hard pizza eater/critic. This is only my second time yelping anyone. I've been here a dozen times, be it a wine country day, on my way back from Shelter Island or visiting my friend in South Jamesport. I can say positively this is some of the best pizza I've had. Crust is usually perfectly charred and the mozzarella is nice and buttery with the sauce. Reminiscent of beautiful Naples pizza. People complaining about the crust being "burnt", have no clue. Furthermore people complaint about the "soggy" center have no clue either. Buck up and buy one perhaps (a clue)? No, buy several then maybe you will learn to appreciate different types of pizzas. If your passing through Jamesport, definitely stop at Grana. We went for an early dinner on a Saturday because we had my daughter with us, reservations were helpful given the size of this place but the size fits perfectly with the menu and the awesome stove that is the center piece of the restaurant. We had two appetizers and ordered two pies for five people and that was more than enough food. My sister recommended the Mushroom/truffle oil pie, I am not a fan of mushrooms but after eating this pizza I am now a fan. The other pie was a Ricotta pie with Arugula on top, that was good too but not as flavorful as the Mushroom pie. I was really impressed with the service there too, the waiter was helpful, prompt and knowledgeable. He explained the appetizers and answered any questions we had. The pizza was good. (We had the white pie with arugula. We wanted the fig one too but it was sold out.) The climate/temperature - not so much. It was super hot in the area and the restaurant was almost as hot inside. At first it felt okay but after spending some time sitting in there we were sweating. They claimed the AC was on full blast but I don't see how that can be considering the restaurant across the street was an ice-box (or I guess their AC system is ancient?). The ice in our water melted in seconds. Also, after much deliberation with my friends over which 2 pizzas to get (there are many that sound good), we ordered and then were told that those two were unavailable! I guess that is because they run out of ingredients which is good as they are fresh, but it would have been nice to have been told upfront. We would have ordered 2 but only ordered one because we decided that we needed to eat and run b/c of the unpleasant climate of the restaurant. We liked the pizza but would have liked it more if we were in a comfortable setting. Next time, please warn people ahead of time if your AC is broken or close until you can comfortably accommodate your diners! read more

So this place still charges a 4% fee to use debit and credit cards!! Such a disgusting and slimy business practice.. they don't even pay 4% yet they charge customers that, and for DEBIT CARDS!!!! Avoid at all costs they obviously hate their customers that pay with plastic. read more

Excellent food all around! For dinner, there are homemade pastas with outstanding sauces, a filet mignon unlike any you've ever had (it's phenomenal!!), and delicious pork and salmon dishes too! We love having pizza at lunch time as well - the dough is out of this world! read more

First and foremost, order the pizza. It's very very good, and I would definitely return to have it again. The pasta on the other hand, not so good. Was "soupy" and just not worth it. The service could use some improving, as stated below. The owners (or hosts) weren't overly friendly and actually rolled their eyes at me after I told them I was a reservation that they didn't know had arrived. I'm writing this review in hopes that the owner sees it and perhaps considers having more staff working on busy weekends that way things like having a potential customer walk out without even ordering do not happen. My husband & I decided to stop here on our way home from our annual apple picking excursion but left because we were seated right away, but then sat there for more than 20 minutes waiting for someone to come to the table to take our order. Not even an acknowledgment by any of the staff - someone, anyone to say 'I'll be right with you.' The two people working literally walked right by our table, looked at us, and said nothing. So we decided to leave. Pity because the items listed on the menu looked really good and the few food items that we did see come out to other tables looked and smelled good too. Oh well. My wife and I have been wanting to try Grana since we moved to Riverhead. Just waiting for the tourists stop coming in droves. From the minute we were seated, every aspect of this place was awesome. The food and service were beyond excellent, and highly recommend Grana. We had the mushroom pizza as an appetizer, there were 6 of us, and it was goooood. Grana is one of the finest, if not THE finest, restaurant on the North Fork. Chef David's food is consistently amazing. From pasta to seafood to steak to soup....he does it all with the skills of a great seasoned chef. The fact that is only 24 yrs old is pretty much mind boggling, as he is only going to get better! On top of everything i just mentioned, he is also a master baker: different styles of cheescake, dbl chocolate, carrot, strawberry rhubarb, tiramisu are just some of the desserts that have been on the menu. And, from what i am told by my female friends, he is great looking too! Haha! The staff is great with the standouts being Brett, Vinny and Brandon. Brett is not only a great server, he is an awesome entertainer as well! Don't forget to ask him for a performance of "Happy Birthday"....even if its not your BD! The Pizza and bread are made in a wood fired brick oven and both are the best I've ever experienced! In these days where you can't get descent bread in Little Italy it's nice to know that there is a restaurant who has as much respect for their bread and pizza as they do their main dishes on the specials menu. Stopped by on the way further out on the North Fork. Wow, it was delicious! We had the roasted artichoke salad, the warm figs wrapped in prosciutto, and the roasted eggplant pizza. Truly delectable. An unexpected treat at dessert, thin cookies w homemade hot fudge to dip them into. The only reason for four stars is that it was so noisy inside that we literally could not hear each other across the table. Acoustics or just loud patrons? I consider myself a pizza autodidact of sorts, albeit a young and progressively smaller-appetite'd one. You know when you finally scratch a nagging itch and it only exacerbates the situation? Well, this wasn't like that...at all. Late in the afternoon on an autumnal Friday, the small joint was fairly desolate considering the recency of its NYT writeup* (not initiating but only expediting my first visit), molten pizza lava flowing like brick oven magma (what?) out of the pores in the (visible) "back". Dog treats lined one counter and some smooth listening blared a little too loudly (effectively defeating the purpose, IMO) as a few tables vibrated following interactions with the personnel. *The publicity seems to be a welcome but still-new phenomenon, and their FB page seems to serve as their sole 'net presence. The clientele consisted of some friendly, albeit overly prim and proper folks, who dotted the tables and were served, if you could call it that, by the staff (who were roundly condescending when the 2 of us got our own pies**...and proceeded to eat them at the bus stop a few sidewalk squares away, but they don't need to know that). You know that joke about how the waiter comes up to the Jewish ladies at the round table in the restaurant and asks, "Is anything all right?"? It's not unlike that. **My order for the butternut squash special pie ($14.95 +tax) was taken by a woman who immediately walked away w/o acknowledging me, assuming it would be shared between us two sizable gents--wrong. Devastatingly, the sign merely said butternut squash, but the pie had a considerable amount of animal product on it (luckily for them I was starving and in no mood to deal with the "service" here), which was re-delegated to my PIC, but not an obstacle with which one should be faced. We were cited a 10 minute wait, and the very tasty but not-worth-it pie took far longer. Grana is cheaper than Brunetti & you get more food for a bit less (though the crust is insanely thin here--like, uhm, looseleaf that's been fried and turned crumbly), but the accomplice's white clam was meh and heavy on garlic and light on clams (which were not at all salient, at least visually). So yeah, the crust, IMO, toed and sometimes lingered on the wrong side of the line between divinely thin and overly crunchy/not crispy thin, burnt-cardboard-like not just in thickness but also in texture. I'd definitely be up for a return and to try some of the others (they had no NoFo that day, though that's not in my wheelhouse anyways). Grab some homemade ice cream or Junda's baked goods after, or go all out at Cliff's, but steer (ha) away from the Cemetery directly across the street. read more

They were on a wait and we offered to wait at the bar for our table but the manager Nancy wouldn't even allow us to wait here unless we had a seat at the bar. I'm a local that looked forward to finally getting to Grana. My husband and I made reservations for 6 pm earlier that day (Saturday). We arrive and are greeted by a woman who seats us at a table that has our name on it and hands us menus. She tells us that we're missing one sheet and she'll be right back. 40 minutes later, we still don't have our "missing sheet". Everyone around us had been helped and several employees saw us sitting at our empty table and never came over and inquired. By 6:45 a girl came over and said, "Did you order?" We said, "No." And she asked us if we wanted to, we ordered 2 pizzas and meatballs...and a soda and a water. No apology for our long wait. We tried to relax and enjoy our time out. While we were waiting for our food (and drinks for that matter) several people were seated and were already receiving salads and bread. The girl who took our order brought us over our drinks. By 7:15 a young boy brought over our pizzas and meatballs, plopping them on our table. No one asked how we were. No one asked if we needed anything. After we finished, we sat for another 15 minutes waiting for someone to look over so we could ask for the check. My husband finally went up to the bar area to ask. He was ignored....finally we got someones attention and she came over wrapped our leftovers and brought us our check. We weren't greeted, we weren't thanked, we weren't even told to have a nice night. I barely recall any eye contact really. The pizza and meatballs were good, but the experience ruined it for us, so I am too bias to write a food review on it. We will certainly NOT be returning. read more

We had a meatball pizza a garden salad along with a bottle of Matabella Famiglia. The food was delicious, the wine somewhat pricey. One of the other reviews mentioned Grimaldi's which to a point is similar. Grana offers substantially more and in my opinion a larger variety of pizza toppings. Top that off with their pasta dishes, and you can see how Grana pulls ahead. The service was attentive, we liked our waitress in fact, she was friendly and helped us choose which pizza to try. Uncorking fee of $20 will not encourage us to come back with our own bottle though. read more

Omg! This is my new favorite restaurant. I went there last Wednesday night with my husband, children and a friend and had an amazing time. The place was packed but I had managed to get reservations. Our server Kamilla was so friendly and extremely knowledgeable. We tried most of her suggestions including a wonderful bottle of red wine. All the food is so fresh that the menu constantly changes. For apps, Kamilla suggested the grilled octopus and fried zucchini flowers. Yummy! For dinner we shared 3 pastas and a pizza. I highly recommend the large ravioli with the egg inside. Forgot the name. We also had the opportunity to meet Vinny the Chef. I can't wait to go back and bring other friends. Definitely a hidden gem! Speachless... I went home got on a plane flew down to florida and slapped my mother for letting me eat pizza at any old place. This is the best pizza you will ever have no matter which one you order. I was having a really bad week and I came here for lunch I took my fist bite and for a minute I thought there was a angel sitting on my shoulder telling me everythings going to be fine. This place is fantastic! Not sure where all the bad reviews are coming from. I've been here several times as my husband and i have passed through Long Island on our way to visit friends. Never had a bad experience... in fact we look forward to going to LI to see our friends b/c we get to stop at Grana. Great Jamesport wine and great wood fired pizza. I highly recommend it. Plenty of parking across the street behind Jamesport Country Kitchen. Grana is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. It serves local wines. About 10 tables and about 10 stools at the bar. They do not serve individual slices, just whole pies, plus pasta, lunch specials. We ordered a pie to go, they said 5 minutes. While you are waiting, you can see the oven in the back. From our view you can see around on the left at the kitchen - we saw a dirty floor, cloths, food. We ordered the wood roasted eggplant with mozzarella, tomato, garlic, onion, bread crumbs. Very, very thin pizza, you need a fork to eat it. It falls apart. Too many onions, a few eggplants, bland, no garlic, a few pieces of mozzarella. I don't think he did it malciously, but if he didn't understand what I was saying he should have asked. Grana has the best pizza in the Hamptons and Northfork. Not to many people know about this delightful trattoria in Jamesport. The pizza is thin crusted, well baked and just the right combination of tomato sauce and cheese. I also like the Grana pizza which is arrugala and cheese. I love the salads. They are so fresh and humongus. The bread is wonderful. The pasta and other dishes are equally delicious. I had a great tomato soup once and I saw someone devour a huge steak. Nancy, the owner is warm and welcoming. She treats everyone like a friend or family member. The place has a fun vibe. It's a nice combination of local and city people. Everyone is enjoying the delcious food. The best is yet to come, when you end the meal, you are treated to homemade cookies and a tin of hot fudge to dip them in. Heaven! read more

Excellent brick oven pizza - all varieties. We had the potato/rosemary/red onion. Next time we will be trying the homemade pasta. Always crowded so be prepared to wait. Great stop in Jamesport that was recommended by my stepdaughters. read more

Well, where to start we ordered a salad and then it took 45 min to get the pizza!!!! No one even came to over to explain what happened!?!?

The pasta (house made spaghetti) was super salty and the texture was terrible. So bad that I couldn't even eat it. The bone in filet mignon's bottom was completely burnt. Black as night and almost crumbling apart because it was ash from being so burnt. The crust on the filet was way too salty and too much of it. They comped a pizza on the house, which wasn't the best either. The appetizers were very good. The dessert (carrot cake) wasn't carrot cake at all. It tasted like a chocolate rum cake or something. Not good. I will try it once more, because I have heard good things about this place. read more

Every time I eat here, I am never disappointed. I recently had their house salad and farro salad, which were both a good start. We ordered the fig pizza, pizza with sausage and onions, mushroom pizza and an arugula and cheese one. They were all delicious! My favorite is the fig pizza! Everything is fresh and the prices are great! Staff is nice, slightly awkward, but nice. The only thing that bothers me is that the air conditioning is on, even when it's not needed, making it very hard not to concentrate on the fact that it is cold as you are eating. I had high hopes for this place based on the reviews. This place sucked. I don't know where to begin. The older gentleman at the door wearing a golf shirt and jeans seats my friend and I at the bar saying verbatim "that he prefers reservations" making me feel that my patronage was not of any value. Rude. Normally in an Italian restaurant they are warm and friendly. If I wasn't so hungry I would have walked out. The burrata looked like Elmers glue. The bolognese was dry. Pizza eh. My favorite? 4% surcharge disclosure on the check if you want to pay with credit AND DEBIT cards! The tables were empty for most of the time we were there. You guys must be the only Italian joint in the area because I don't understand how you can treat customers that way. I've seen Nancy from this restaurant write nasty responses with those that gave their honest opinion and would welcome her defensive feedback. So Nancy here's a couple of tips: invest in better burrata, some hospitality classes for the front of the house and tell the old man in the front to actually get dressed like he's going to work instead of cleaning out the garage. read more

This is lauded as one of the top restaurants in Jamesport and that may very well be the case. But let us focus on one point: Jameport. This is a town in which corner stores with gum are difficult to come by; the most exciting destination may just be the greenhouse; and this a town where its proclivities towards wine and vineyards makes sense. We were told that Grana had decent food offerings and so, desperate for a meal, we skipped over. On the first night, we opted for the pasta, which was not very good at all. I had the puttanesca, which was terribly bland -- emphasizing tomatoes over anchovies; my girlfriend had a creamy farfelle concoction that fell short of the mark in almost every regard. The saving grace of the meal was Dave's Carrot Cake, which - while not very good - at least titillated our sweet cravings. Or general food craving for that matter, for good food (devoid of oil and grease) is difficult to come by in this noble town. A few days later, having come to realize that the only other option in the town - The Jedediah Hawkins Inn - was awful, we decided to give Grana's pizzas a go. Unlike the pasta, these were very respectable wood-fired pizzas. The service was generally pleasant. On the Friday evening, however, there was a hostess who appeared to be in the midst of a mental breakdown and her behavior was more than a little erratic. Modulo that, however, the service was unpolished but friendly enough for a pizza joint. Conclusion: When treated as a local pizza joint, this place fits the bill. The food is respectable, but the notion that this is high-quality Italian fare is preposterous. Individuals who claim that this is remotely on par with restaurants in Brooklyn/Manhattan are delusional (with all due respect, of course). If you're in town for the Summer and are looking for an honest-to-goodness pizza, this should certainly be on your radar, just go in with the appropriate expectations. read more
