Grand Apizza Madison has the most amazing pizza and Italian specialities. I find it so surprising that there are so few Yelp reviews for this little Italian gem. You can smell the delicious aroma before you enter the restaurant. Their pizza totally rivals Frank Pepe's. The Chicken & Cheese Pizza has an amazingly light and crispy charred crust with the most delicate fresh flavorful red tomato sauce with abundant amounts of toppings. We also ordered the Baked Ziti with meat balls and the Lasagna. The dinner portions were huge and they came with a wonderful house salad. In addition, we had a side of two meatballs not pictured. Meatballs were ginormous and equally delicious. We were a table of 5 and I'm happy to say we didn't spend a small fortune. I just may skip Frank Pepe's when I'm in CT. and start coming here instead. I'll start this review by saying that the pizza was great. Shrimp scampi, and bean/escarole pizza toppings were delicious. Classic New Haven style thin crust pizza. Their menu offers a wide variety of specialty pizzas along with sandwiches, wraps, appetizers, and a few entrees. Being a Friday night, we obviously expected it to be busy, but the wait was unlike any other...only two waitresses on staff (they were friendly but clearly had way too many tables to take care of). Because of this, the service wasn't prompt and was a bit irritating. This aside, because again, this wasn't our waitresses fault (bad management or perhaps someone called out?) it seems as if the restaurant prioritized take out orders over dine in. In the 45-60 minutes we waited for our pizza (it was just one medium pie for my girlfriend and I) it seemed as if a hundred customers had come in to pick up take out. While it's quite possible they could have waited even longer than we did, it feels as if this place didn't do enough to crank out pizza for customers dining in. All in all, I would highly recommend the pizza, but would avoid this place during peak hours or if you are pressed for time. read more

There was no apology nor offer of compensation. I was asked to return both times to get the correct order and in one case I was then made to wait almost a half hour. We got a large Grand special with Sausage, bacon, onions, peppers, pepperoni, & mushrooms and a small Grand special with gluten free crust. Both were outstanding! The toppings were loaded on so every bite had something wonderful, the sauce was delicious, and the crust was thin and perfectly cooked, LIGHTLY charred (not burned). We very rarely come across a seafood pizza and we were so happy that we tried it. They even allow you to order with half white and half red sauce. The server was very attentive and friendly. Grand Apizza makes authentic New Haven style pizza. Fugetabout that other Madison pizzeria which shamelessly uses New Haven in its name and fugetabout that pizzeria on the East River which claims it makes New Haven style pizza. They are phonies. Grand Apizza is the real deal. That's right. The Nuzzo family has been pumping out pizzas for over 59 years, long before the word apizza became trendy and at a time when Italian Americans actually lived in the city of New Haven. Fred Nuzzo founded the original Grand Apizza on Grand Avenue in Fair Haven and eventually his sons carried on the tradition to Clinton, Cheshire, North Haven, and even Scottsdale Arizonia. Now Grand Apizza comes to Madison. However, if you're a true local then you know this is not the first time Grand Apizza has set foot in Madison. Yes Grand Apizza once had a branch directly across Route 1 from Hammonasset. I used to go there as a kid when my family camped at Hammo. This Grand Apizza took over the former site of the Village Pizza. Village Pizza made truly shitty pizza so Grand Apizza's arrival was like a Godsend. And apparently the town agrees. For instance when Village Pizza was in town you'd be lucky to see any customers inside it. Just recently when I picked up my pizza at Grand Apizza, every seat was occupied and the ovens were running at full capacity. It's like night and day. As you might have already guessed I'm a really big fan of Grand Apizza. All their branches make excellent pizza (FYI the original one on Grand Avenue no longer remains in the Nuzzo family). Most people know New Haven style pizza to be charred, but it's slightly more complicated than that. It is also oily, thin, soupy, salty, and both crispy and chewy at the same time. Let me first start with the good- Really great pizza. Now the bad- zero customer service, bitter and sloppy staff who are clearly unhappy and absolutely zero professionalism. We understand that the service industry is shortstaffed and sometimes you have to wait longer than normal but tonight's experience was hands down one of the worst. The owners really need to re-evaluate what they are doing. We went in tonight and placed an order for pickup and waited at the bar. The entire experience was a disaster. We waited one hour and forty-five minutes for an order that consisted of exactly 2 medium pizzas and a large garden salad. When we finally saw the bartender walking towards, us, we thought 'halleulujah finally our order is ready' but no... she came back to tell us our pizza was "broken." What does that even mean? She then comped us a free drink for the "mistake." Cool shouldn't be more than another 20 minutes right but? Nope. We saw people come and go. We saw couples get seated, eat, pay their checks and leave. During this entire time there was zero communication from the staff except for overhearing the bartender gossip and talk about how much she didn't want to be there. Additionally when we got back home and looked over the bill we realized we had been overcharged. Unbelievable. Stay away from this place. Unless you want "broken" pizzas. read more

The food and drinks here are great. Some of the other bars in town are over-crowded and have staff that can be dismissive when they are busy. The staff at Grand is not like that at all- they are extremely welcoming and pleasant to interact with. Their pizza is amazing. their chicken parm is delicious. I've given this place too many chances. While the food is good, the lack of service rendered this week my last visit. An hour plus wait for take out is long, but it's summer in Madison and I planned accordingly. What isn't alright is the line 20 deep that meanders through the dining room, bar, and out the front door to pick up the now cold food you've planned to pick up in a time frame suggested by the staff. I understand staffing is a challenge, but at grand the issue is no longer insufficient staff, but a business that doesn't know it's limits. read more

Just had a Shrimp Florentine pizza with a buddy of mine and it easily ranks as one of my top pizzas, and this coming from a guy who's had the best of em in New Haven. The balance of flavor on this pizza was perfect. Everything from the shrimp to the spinach, the white wine, and even the crust was perfect. I hear the meat lovers is excellent as well but haven't had an opportunity to try it yet. Looking forward to the next opportunity to try this place again! read more
