When I first moved Downtown in 2013, there were exactly zero breweries in the neighborhood. In fact the closest one was 4 miles away. Today (as of me writing this) there are four in Downtown. Mother Bunch, Arizona Wilderness, State 48, and now Grand Avenue (with Greenwood Brewing slated to open soon). The newest is this place. Opened in May 2019, Grand Avenue Brewing is the first microbrewery to occupy a spot along historic Grand Avenue. Eager to check out the newest beer addition to the neighborhood, I found my way here on a mid Saturday afternoon. You'll find Grand Avenue Brewing occupying a repurposed 1940s warehouse on the southwest corner of Grand Avenue and Pierce Street. Originally a sheet metal shop, the building has had many identities since it was first built. Most recently, it was a law practice. The owner of that practice, John Coll, works as an attorney by day, but has been a passionate homebrewer in his off hours. Now Coll has made his passion a fledgling business in his 3,000 square foot building. There's a small private parking lot west of the building and the building itself is split between the taproom in the front and the brewing operation in back (which is plainly visible from the tap room). For now, the taproom can seat about 25-30 patrons, with plans for patio seating after the summer months. I saddled up to the bar for my first visit. The beer and food menu is clearly posted right behind the bar area for examination. For now they have 7 in house brews on rotation with 1 rotating guest brew (today it was Dragoon). They also have 4 food items on offering. And yes, they do have flights. After sampling a couple of their beers, I opted for a flight of my own. The beers included in this flight: an IPA, a red ale, a scout, and a raspberry ale. For my food, I decided to stay local. A Schreiner bratwurst on a pretzel roll (also baked locally) with sauerkraut, dill pickle, smoked onions, and mustard. Total cost for everything including tax and tip came to $15. My favorite of the flight was probably the Session Red, though I will also say the sampler I got of their Blackberry Braggot was also quite delicious (it's also their strongest at 11% ABV). The bratwurst was fantastic. Particularly the pretzel bun it was served on. Perfect compliment to the beer flight. All this on top of the four free samples they offered (including an unreleased IPA from the owner fresh from the brewing vessel) and you've got a pretty phenomenal intro to the newest neighborhood spot. The place is still evolving and they've got big plans. In addition to patio seating, they'll soon be taking over the building across the parking lot, adding more signage in the taproom, adding more menu items, and of course adding more in house brewery creations to the taproom. And they also have their own growler you can purchase. A great addition to Grand Avenue, and to Downtown Phoenix more broadly. That Downtown can now support 4 (soon to be 5) breweries is a real testament to the area's renaissance. Great local beer coupled with great local food in a well preserved historic location. A business model any microbrewer would be proud of. read more

A brewery on Grand?! Awesome! I've only been in a couple times, but the beers have been tasty and the atmosphere is really chill. The brewery isn't a huge space, but it was comfortable. Prices were average. Worth a try if you're on Grand for sure. read more

I came here with friends! I love supporting local businesses so I was super excited to get us all here. We went in a Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately when it's 109 out, it is very uncomfortable to not use AC. They had the windows and doors open and I believe a swamp cooler? We were all sweating and our legs were sticking to the chairs so our experience wasn't all that enjoyable. The set up is nice though. They have puzzles and seating for a few small groups of friends. It's a little bit more industrial so it's a great place to start the night. I loved the throwback Suns painting on the wall! The food smelled great though we didn't try it. I tried four different beers. What I really liked about Grand Ave is that their draft list is concise. I think there were only seven options so I felt that guaranteed some quality. I don't think I'd come back until winter time but it's definitely worth a shot to check out and support. read more

Outstanding service and fun atmosphere! We sat in the Adirondack chairs outside and had a flight and a couple of the huge pretzels! They were out of a few beers, but there was still plenty to choose from, and they were tasty! Then we ordered some food. It came quickly and was great. The smoked baked potato was DELICIOUS! This is now my favorite local brewery. I really like the very casual environment and the great downtown Grand Avenue location. In addition to 10 oz. and 16 oz. servings, their brews (Happy Jack and Grand Framb are my favorites) can be sampled in a flight of four 4-oz. glasses - a great deal for 7 bucks as of this writing. Of course you can ask for tasting samples of the different brews before you order your flight or your choice of brew(s) in bigger glasses. A big plus for me, foodie that I am, is that they offer delicious comestibles such as smoked/stuffed baked potatoes, tacos, sliders, and sausages that can be paired with your beer. Bar, community, and lounge seating is available (with games on the tables) and it's a pleasure to discuss the brews with the bartender. I've always enjoyed visiting the Grand Avenue arts district and this brewery now makes me look forward to such visits even more. read more

Unique process of pressure cooking, then smoking potatoes highlight the food offerings here. My first visit, I was introduced to beef carbonade (the official dish of Belgium, so I was told) as a topping for a smoked baked potato. Wow, what a great pairing of tastes! Grand Avenue Brewing has several other toppings for smoked potatoes. Try all of them! I plan on it. There are other items on the food menu that I haven't tried. The potatoes are that good. They also have a wide selection of beer, most of which are brewed on the premises. The staff members are friendly and helpful. I thought this place is amazing! When we had went I was so impressed with so many of the beers and I barely got to sip any at the time since i was 7 months pregnant. What also really blew me away was not only the service but the bratwurst was so good. Good pork green chili, especially heaped atop one of the smoked baked potatoes, with plenty of butter, sour cream, and cheddar cheese! The beer selection is pretty good as well - John and tram keep the taps flowing with new different beers every week or two - today having an Equinox IPA and a a Throwback IPA. Stopped in Grand Ave Brewing just this weekend, love this place! I was fortunate enough to overhear the actual Brewer who created many of the brews. Been to all the breweries in PHX and grand avenue is the new winner. It's a hidden gem and people don't know about it yet so isn't over crowded. Living room feel, better special design than the commercialized industrial bars. Awesome beers and the sausage is amazing! So much fun here. Great ambience for drinks, chat, groups, and even chess! I have started coming to this location based on Third Space closing, and the necessity of our Roller Derby team needing a team dinner spot. I used Yelp to find them, and i'm so glad I did! I'll break down the review as best as possible to make things a bit easier. Decor/Parking: Nestled in a little 3 way pointed street, reminds me of SF, this location is awesome! I believe it's a renovated garage, because they have a giant open door that gives you a wonderful view of the menu, seating, and beer vats in the back! Parking is hard, there isn't a dedicated lot! Service: The bartender I had was great, knowledgeable, and helped me choose what to drink based on my preferences. I'm not a big beer drinker, and he was able to give me samples. I can't think of any negative things to say about the service at all! Food: The food here is pretty decent! I had the giant pretzel with beer cheese, and omg was it good! The pretzel is big enough to share, and the beer cheese is made with beer you can actually taste. They also have some sandwiches, sausages, baked potatoes, etc. Pretty decent prices, and great variety for small bar food fare. The only downside was there was no fountain drinks, you had to buy pre-packaged bottled drinks that were too pricey for me. read more

It took me way too long to visit this place for the first time. Finally got to visit for the first time last night. Everything I ordered really hit the spot. I got a creamsicle beer and the Carolina pulled pork sliders with the coleslaw of course. Im kind of a snob when it comes to my coleslaw but there's is nice and creamy. The food was pretty good but the beer left a lot to be desired. The service was also pretty good but in this competitive space you really have to raise your level. I asked for a simple swap of a beer on a flight to one of equal value and the bartender was only able to say no - but could not provide an explanation. She should have more freedom if the price and profit are the same. read more

It's hard to rate this place. I didn't stay because it was too hot. The menu was VERY limited (I am on Keto). To be far I only looked on the menu written. I didn't bother to ask for a menu because it was hot (end of July mid day). I would check this place out again maybe when it cools down. read more
