The Grand Cafe is a family gathering place. Right when I stepped into the restaurant, I was struck by the voices of a boisterous Chinese family gathered in the corner. Loud and proud; happy and gastronomically satisfied. The kind of conversation that happens when everyone has bonded over a meal. Quietly on the opposite side, a young woman sat by herself with two orders of fried rice in front of her. Behind me, an Indian Asian couple paying their check. Here you can get a bowl of Hong Kong style wonton mein, a beef look fun along with your regular dinner items and not feel weird. This place used to be Gum Kuo of Dublin, but it's now run by the folks behind Mayflower. I'm not sure how much the menu has changed since the Gum Kuo days, but the dishes I come for are still here - especially the Congee with Pork Giblet and the Pig Kidney and Liver stir-fried in Ginger Scallions (a must-order!) - the portions are actually huge, so definitely a good value. One big plus is the free parking - a major improvement over Gum Kuo in Oakland, where you either have to pay for the parking garage or risk your car getting bipped with street parking. The only downside is that the prices are a little higher than what you'd see in Oakland, but considering the portion sizes and convenience, it's still worth it. 5 stars is truly not enough stars for this establishment. This review includes photos from the last 3 times I have been to Gran Cafe and they have never let me down. For starters, the customer service is out of this world! My wife and I were greeted very kindly by the servers and one of the hosts even remembered me from my very first visit. The food itself is very authentic and the portions are massive. I did think the Beef Chow Fun could have some more flavor but the stars of my experience were the roast duck and hainan chicken. I was suddenly craving some Chinese comfort food a cold, posy rainy evening. More specifically I wanted some beef chow fun. I recall Hubs taking me here a few months ago. We came here around 7 pm. It was 3/4 full on a Saturday night. It reminded me of a local restaurant where the staff recognize the regulars and come by the table to make small talk about life. It didn't take too long to decide as we all had in mind what we wanted. Beef Chow Fun for me. DD wanted wonton noodles, Sweet and Sour Pork. Hubs wanted Eggplant and Tofu and a claypot with Chinese Sausage (took 30 min). I didn't know they had Lemon Iced Tea and Yin Yang tea. The server was friendly and kind enough to add more sugar to my tea when I told her it wasn't sweet enough. She also packed up our leftover because there was still a lot of it, which we didn't mind. The beef Chow fun has lots of fresh bean sprouts and "wok air", nicely seasoned and browned which is hard to master. The clay pot took longer than 30 min but it was worth the wait. Meeting our extended family who live in the area for dinner; I made an early reservation based on my Yelp research, which did not disappoint. Arrived early the restaurant was almost empty but filled quickly later on, the waitress was very friendly and chatty. Ambiance is not anywhere near that of Mayflower or Koi but decent, the printed menu on glossy three fold paper offers many interesting options. There are also a few set menu choices. We opted to order ala carte so everyone can have his/her pick, most of the dishes were excellent, a few misses which were more related to portion size than quality. Some of the inconsistencies: Two orders of West lake beef soup ($18.95 x 2) only served half of a small bowl each for the 10 of us, which seem strange although the soup was good. The Seafood E-fu noodle ($22.95) was skimpy which barely covered the plate. Roasted pork belly ($15.95 X2) was excellent with crispy skin, the 2nd plate was visibly much larger portion than the first one which was very small. Now everything else were nicely done and well enjoyed by the group which included Roast duck ($41.95), Hainan chicken ($36.95), Clams ($21.95), sweet & sour pork (20.95), honey walnut prawns (23.95), Chinese Gailan (18.95), Goji Berry vegetable supreme(18.95), mushroom w/ Japanese tofu(20.95), Singapore Vermicelli ($19.95) , a couple of shrimp rice rolls, rice and etc. We asked for less oil and msg which was noted on our order. Cantonese style cooking is one of my biggest comfort foods! I thoroughly enjoyed each dish we ordered. My partner told me he would bring his parents here and that was all I needed to hear! Location: located in Fallon gateway in a small portion of the plaza. Parking gets tricky immediately outside but there are plenty of places to park a bit further away. Beef chow fun: This was good but we probably wouldn't get it again since the flavor wasn't up there. Char siu: Good char siu is the way to my heart and this place 100% has it. This bbq pork was the perfect sweetness and a generous portion. Will definitely be buying this again. Youtiao (fried dough stick): The perfect addition to our jook. We just happened to be in town and we were looking for a Hong Kong style cafe and this place happens to be one of the few ones out here. Between just two people we ordered the fish in cream corn over rice and the salt and pepper pork. Meat in both dishes were tender and not too salty. I also didn't expect their fish in cream corn look the way it did but it was still delicious. Other HK cafe spots use a white cream corn sauce but they taste pretty similar. You know the locals come here when they literally give you 1 minute to order, but they were gracious enough to allow us a few more minutes to peruse their extensive menu. Classic Cantonese cuisine is the name of the game. The string bean with spicy pork was delicious, not too spicy. The Singaporean noodles were also bomb - and seriously... portion size was humongous (serving spoon for size)! The salt and pepper tofu was not bad -- wish there was a little more salt but appreciated the heap of fried garlic on top. The cubed beef with mushrooms was a recommendation from our waiter, and it did not disappoint! Some beef pieces were very tender, others were more sinewy, but the flavors were on point. Lastly the salt and pepper shrimp was deliciously fried to perfection. I didn't know this eastern part of Dublin was like a mini Chinatown, except all modern strip mall with plenty of parking. He did all the ordering as well. We had a bunch of dishes served on a round turntable thingy in the middle of our 8 person big round table. All the dishes came out pretty fast. Included were noodle dishes like chow fun and a tomato and beef red sauce over crispy fried noodles, Roast duck, chicken wings, pork belly in brown sauce, peashoots veggies and one of the weirdest Chinese dishes I've ever seen, runny scrambled eggs and beef over wide rice noodles. Oh yeah, steamed rice too. That weird scrambled egg dish was not very appetizing looking, at least to half the table, but it actually tasted pretty good after I added salt to mine. I loved the chicken wings (well who doesn't?) and of course the crispy skin on the roast duck. All the foods that were ordered, weren't like the typical Chinese food I've gotten most places. It all tasted fabulous! I've never had pork belly so tender, it just melted in my mouth. Service was very fast. One thing I noticed, no water was served, just hot tea, I guess that's the real Chinese way of eating. No one asked for a fork either! I'd come back here for sure. read more

One of my favorite feature that remains the same is that they stay open the whole day. Most Chinese restaurants have a break between lunch and dinner. We ordered a couple new items and one old standard. Salted fish pork patty rice claypot. 5 stars my old Gum Kuo favorite. Larger portions bigger claypot. Tip order right when get there it takes 20 minutes to prepare. Braised Yi mein with crab 3 stars lacking in crab and crab flavor. A couple of straw mushrooms as toppings. I came here with friends on a Saturday for a late lunch/early dinner around 4pm. We were craving rice noodle rolls and they serve it all day here! We tried the shredded duck rice rolls and bbq pork rice rolls but the duck rice rolls were phenomenal and I don't think I've seen them served elsewhere. My family and I ordered the usual of what we'd order from Gum Kuo: Green beans, soy sauce chow mein, and abalone porridge. If you're wondering if the food tastes the same as gum kuo, it truly does. I have a feeling that the chef is the same. I was able to determine this by the flavor of the green beans, the quantity of the chow mein, and the creaminess of the porridge. They have also hired many more servers than before! Although this place has less stars than they deserve, I really encourage you to try it if you're craving gum kuo. After the server presented the check, I paid $20 in cash for the bowl of noodle. In other restaurants, the server would bring the change back. But she didn't and started chatting with other servers as there wasn't a lot of customers. I sensed that she had no intention of returning the change. I had to ask them for my change before one of them went over to the cash register and brought the change back. If I didn't ask, I fear that the servers might keep it.
