Grata has been open for a little over a year in Midtown East and I stopped by this weekend to their beautiful small space to try some of their drinks and dishes! Their Tha tea is massive and for $5 it is super worth it! The puffs are flaky and stuffed with curry mashed potatoes. I enjoyed the duck salad and the duck was tender and flavorful. The noodles were also very chewy and it was my fav dish. If you're a soup person, their sour and coconut-y soup was heartwarming! The salmon was also fried perfectly and paired well with their cute heart-shaped white rice. The owner and server also talked to us and they were both very sweet. I ordered the Thai tea which was presented in a jumbo glass that was almost double the size of your usual glass! The fun large bendy straw was great. We had a hard time picking among all the choices. The dishes were all presented with a lovely presentation too! Roti with massaman curry (5/5): The roti was out of this world--very crunchy and great on its own. The massaman was delicious but my only suggestion was that the curry was too thin for it to be accompanied with the roti. We used the leftovers and dumped into rice, which was perfect. Pad Pred Normai (5/5): The dish was heavily portioned with bamboo shoots, peppers, and plentiful of seasoning. It was spicy, as spice lovers, neither of us found it too spicy! Thai food is my comfort food. We loved meeting the chef and he made some great recommendations to us. The service was excellent and it's such a cute no frill Thai food spot. We tried the softshell crab salad. Also the roti with Masa, curry and curry puffs for the main course. We had pineapple fried rice and amazing glass noodles with shrimp. They had great reviews so I walked in after a long walk to order takeout and ordered the $17 pineapple fried rice w/ tofu as the protein and added vegetables for additional cost (she confirmed with me on the screen as well when she pressed it) but there were 0 veggies as you can see. + a few pieces of flavorless tofu. + 6 or so total chunks of pineapple. abysmal. like, wildly disappointing. I didn't even save money by ordering a lunch special since I was craving the PFR... + $2.50 for their basic bottled water. Minimal flavor in the rice, whole dish was average at best. Worst part was the experience (and the reason for 1 vs 3 stars) -- i ordered it to-go since I planned on taking most of it home and just wanted a quick bite. The woman handed me the bag as it came out of the kitchen. She told me to have a good day and that's when I mentioned that I was actually gonna sit down for a sec to eat before heading out (with the takeout packaging ready to go)! Restaurant only had 1 other person inside if it matters. She got mad at that, and told me how I wasn't allowed to eat it inside since I purchased it "to go". Like... the meal that just came out of their kitchen, packaged by them, was for some reason not allowed to be eaten at their restaurant. HAHAHA. She argued about it with me for a second. Maybe it's because she knew once I sat down and opened it, I'd see how badly it was lacking. Or they're just really odd and like losing business due to arbitrary reasons. We tried a variety of Thai appetizers and entrees and everything was so delicous. I especially loved the crispy duck salad and the duck over rice. The crispy duck salad was sweet spicy and sour, the perfect combination of Thai dish and left an amazing umami taste after every bite. The duck over rice was so good because of that amazing homemade Thai duck sauce. The sauce was so flavorful, I drenched the rice and duck to make one of the best duck dishes I have tried. My pickup order was ready right on time - I ordered the Papaya Salad ($12) and the Green Curry Lunch with chicken ($15.95), which comes with an appetizer. The food was good - I thought the lunch portions were a bit small in my opinion; I wonder if the regular portions are bigger for only $2 more? I asked for both my dishes to be extra spicy and it was only mildly spicy. They did fill the small to go container with lots of chicken and veggies, but I would have liked more of the green curry sauce with it. Both the soup and rice container were the extra small portions. I had it was delivery and it arrived quickly and was still warm. I ordered the dumplings (good taste and could identify the ingredients), Thai fish cake (a little dry and they could have added more of the sweet chili cucumber sauce) and the roast duck over rice. Cute little Thai restaurant in the UES, with lots of options! The chicken satay was amazing, but our favorites were the drunken noodles with tofu, and the mock duck green curry fried rice. Beware vegetarians they do add fish sauce in a lot of their dishes (including curries) so make sure to order without! But even without it, all the dishes were so good. read more

Yum! For a quick lunch spot this place is perfect! It's not too expensive and it was delicious. We got it delivered so we can't say much about the service but it was ready within 15 minutes! I ordered the tofu green curry which came with rice and had tofu, eggplant, peppers, basil, and bamboo shoots. I think the guys opened the place a little to early as the restaurant not ready for dining guests, the luck of service even it was nice but they only had 1 girl that was serving and answering take out calls, the main dish that served in specific pot that gets gutted on the table got served without the right side serving spoon so you couldn't get any soup out, they actually did say it's to big of a spoon but they didn't have another one. That makes me sad that luck of management may result on places not succeed. The tom kha is thicker and tangier than I'm used to. I usually prefer tom kha to tom yum but I actually quite like the tom yum here. The fried rice could use a bit more crisp, but the springs rolls and duck all had the perfect crisp. The pad see ew and pad thai are ok, but the noodles are a bit overcooked for my tastes. Luscious Thai had very good food but no atmosphere. Grata, which replaced them, doesn't compare food-wise but has a better vibe for eating in. One of the girls who works there is super nice and friendly, I think her name was Ice:) They also have live music a couple nights a week. Grata is a mixed bag, ate their twice. First time I had Thai fried rice with shrimp, which was fairly good. Today, trying to eat cleaner to recover from a big ride, I irdered chicken satay, white rice, steamed broccoli. It was anything BUT clean! The chicken wasn't breast but some other oily cut, the rice below average (used to be delicious), the broccoli tasteless. The peanut sauce the worst AND very oily. I may return and give them one more shot (or not), as they're only half a block away. PS: Word of advice One hour later and I am not digesting that meal well. read more

I also felt the portions were a bit stingy (the tom yum soup had maybe like one or two pieces of chicken in it and not much else; the larb gai portion was smaller than I would have liked - but maybe it's meant to be ordered as an appetizer).
