Out on a school night!!! (Well, on a Sunday afternoon, but still) Stopped in to Gray Tavern and bellied up to the bar for happy hour. Aaron was super friendly and suggested some beverages for us; sadly for us his shift was ending. However, we were lucky to have Chris K helping us out, so all was great. Jim G and I enjoyed a few different drinks, including the Painkiller and the Hotshot Margarita, made with their pepper-infused tequila. It was super good and I don't even like tequila! Jim also had one of Chris's bartender's choice and he made Jim a delicious version of a whiskey sour. For food, we really enjoyed the Mint Labneh and Feta and we thought the Crispy Cauliflower and Crispy Fried Chicken Sandwich were ok. Not bad, just nothing special. Good music, good vibe, great service. If we are near the area again, we'll hit up Gray Tavern, especially if Aaron or Chris are behind the bar! read more

Came in last night to catch a late dinner for a promo and at 9:20pm I was turned away because the kitchen was closed. Today the promo team was advertising their hours and asked them about if their kitchen closes at different times per day. The team sent me a photo of hours listed on site stating dinner hours were Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 5pm-10pm. In a way I felt shafted. In a way its understandable that Tuesday may have been a slow day but on the flip side, there may be some people trickling in because the place does close at 11pm. Parking on a tuesday even was still horrible as I circled around the vicinity to not find parking. The neighborhood area needs a permit from 6pm-8am. Sitting outside is great and feels nice but you may want some bug spray in hand or already on you because we were bitten by so many mosquitos, downfall of summer. My wife has been wanting to give this place a shot, and judging by her taste, there was no doubt in my mind that this was going to be a solid night. Let's just say she didn't let me down. COVID precautions were followed throughout the restaurant. Dining/drinking at the bar area was closed indefinitely, which was a bummer. It wasn't a big deal for us so we opted to sit in their outdoor patio area. Definitely gorgeous environment and a great place for a romantic yet casual date night. Ordered a couple of cocktail drinks, which were pleasantly delicious and refreshing. We stuck with an appetizer and ordered the queso fundido, which was incredibly heavy and rich for my taste, but still good. Stopped here after landing at LAX and chose patio seating. It didn't even feel like we were outside. The ambience was casual and relaxing. We ordered the Mac and cheese and fried chicken sandwich. The pasta was steaming hot and creamy with a slight crunch throughout because of the bacon and breadcrumbs. It stayed well-heated because it was served in a cast iron. When another restaurant had to close due to a local power failure, we searched for another place to go for a Sunday brunch & stumbled along the good reviews of Gray Tavern, easy to find along Ventura Blvd at Vineland. Plenty of street parking & a lovely patio in the rear that is shielded from the street. Very nice people, great bartender, super drinks... classics & their specialty ones. Brunch menu is pretty wide & I'm showing pictures of their xlnt burgers (some of us switched eggs for bacon), pancakes, salmon benedicts. Great sides yummy steak fries. We made a reservation, though it wasn't really needed on this day. Servers are attentive & do a great job !!! Cool to have a new brunch spot... So, I guess the old trope of bars and taverns having terrible food is no longer true. Not only have I hit up my fair share of amazing pubs in the last few months, they lack in nothing; food, ambiance, service. It's all there. This place is no different, and thankfully quiet on a Sunday afternoon. It's definitely one of the more tame taverns I've been to and has a lovely breezy patio out back, perfect for dinning outdoors in that LA weather. The brunch menu, which lasts until 4PM on Saturdays and Sundays, has a little bit of everything for every palate, from their well-rounded "Brunchtails" to their popular brunch-y favorites like Stuffed French Toast, Fried Chicken & Waffles, Breakfast Sandwiches and Burritos, and Pork Belly Hash. I started my day off with their delicious Cafe con Coco cocktail, because I am a coffee cocktail fiend! This cocktail is made with Rum Haven Coconut Rum, Coffee Liqueur, Cold Brew Coffee, Brown Sugar, and Egg White. This is a very creamy cocktail, with perhaps a little too much sweetness, but overall a very nice balance. If you like the stronger stuff, may I recommend their Proper Coffee cocktail with Irish Whiskey and Irish Cream? And yes, they also serve mimosas. For the food portion of my day, I was told to try their Stuffed French Toast which is made with Nutella (not my favorite spread), mixed berry compote, hazelnuts, caramelized bananas, and cheesecake batter. Yes, it is ridiculously sweet and decadent with a beautiful presentation of Creme Brûlée bananas and edible flower garnishes. And despite my usual distaste for Nutella, this French Toast is hella good! The toast is nice and fluffy in the center and ever-so-crispy around the edges. Thanks to all that thick Nutella stuffed in between each slice of toast, I ate it like a dog trying peanut butter for the first time. Torn as I was between their Fried Chicken & Waffles and their enormous Breakfast Burrito, I just can't pass up a good fried chicken and waffles dish. I mean, Jidori Fried Chicken Wings and Pork Belly Red Eye Gravy on Buttermilk Waffles: What's not to love? Again, beautiful presentation and an ample portion of chicken to go with those perfectly-cooked waffles. Savory. Sweet. Decadent. Done. The parking can be a bit tricky to find in this area, but I usually find some metered parking while driving up and down the street. Service is awesome. And I have no complaints about this place. I think that deserves 5 stars. read more

Possibly less. -Dinner came out before our app. Asked to cancel app, server said 'ops! I thought you got it already, I'm sorry.' Then comes back from the kitchen 5 mins later with the app, puts it in front of us while we are eating dinner and said. I think it just got missed in the window so it was there the whole time. It's real good and it's right here so you should try it!' We said "fine. Sure." It was awkward. It was also on the bill. I will start with the positive, the food and service. Greek salad with chicken was flavorful. Portion was really satisfying. My friend really enjoyed her burger and fries. Cauliflower was also tasty. Prices are reasonable. Drinks are also good and standard prices. Service was friendly. Negative, and why I will hesitate to go back, the tables outside are really terrible. They are sticky, and wobbly. The chairs are wobbly and uncomfortable as well. It is so distracting! The music is just horribly loud. We absolutely love this place. It's a hidden gem. Not only is it such a cute patio area, we had the best service from Aaron and Tommy (the bar manager) was also welcoming and helpful. We recommend this place hands down. Side note is that we brought our 7month old and stroller and there was plenty of room to have him around. Love, love, love this place. I wish we could have rated the food and/or drinks. We set reservations well in advance for 6 for a friend's birthday for a Saturday evening. Our friend got a phone call at 4pm on the same Saturday that our reservation was cancelled as they received a buy out for the entire restaurant for a private event. Who does that? Oh right, Grays Tavern does. We would have totally understood if we called for reservations and were told that in advance. But two hours before our reservations is just bad business. Inconsiderate to all your other guests. Mistake, big mistake. We all are huge Angeleno foodies that frequent our valley and cities' restaurants. For this, we won't bother trying to visit again. There are way too many beautiful restaurants in SFV and LA who wouldn't consider last minute closings of their restaurant to the deficit of other patrons. Shame on you, Mr Gray. read more

We ordered the Regina George and Emotionally Unavailable and both disappointing. They tasted like strictly tequila and no other mixes. We would have been better off ordering shots. We got the nachos with chicken. The salsa tasted strange and they put an uncut chicken breast on top which made the eating process hard and messy. I came here a couple years ago with a girlfriend and we closed the place down. We had such a great time and the food was delicious so we just kept ordering. I had been wanting to return with my husband. I knew he would love their unique beer selection. We ended up at another place down the street first, where we actually walked out after being ignored for 30 minutes. That turned out to be a positive because I remembered Gray Tavern was just down the street and have a wonderfully cozy outdoor patio! Win-win! The service was excellent and the food even better. We started with a cauliflower dish that was full of flavor and a great preparation. I was tempted by their burger even though I'm trying to eliminate red meat out of my diet. Sometimes, especially on a Friday night, you just need an excellent burger and a glass of red wine or a beer. This was that night. The food was really great and while their menu is small, it is thoughtfully put together and everything on it is appealing. They are very Covid safe here. Tables are more than 6 feet apart, servers are masked, menus are read from a QR code, and it's very clean. Definitely recommend coming here for the patio. It's actually a challenge to find outdoor seating with heaters and helpful, responsive service with excellent food during the pandemic. Truth be told, at the time of this writing, this is the third time restaurants have been re-open for business and in the span of 10 days I've been to four different restaurants that I've gone to in the past and always had a good time and it has not been the same. One place actually tried to take my plate away while I was still eating as a way to rush me out the door. I am talking mostly about customer service. I totally get this is an incredibly stressful time and especially hard on service workers who may be weary about coming to work with the public. As someone who's always been a frequent diner, it's been important to me to support restaurants and its workers in any way I could over the course of the pandemic. When I see so many restaurants not even trying when they have the resources to open again and it's indicative with their staff that they really don't give a shit, it makes it hard to continue to offer that support. I'm happy to say that was far from the case at Gray. We had an all around great time and will come back very soon to continue to support them and you should too!! read more

Where to start about The Gray Tavern. Their wall of succulents is quite relaxing and their server Emma is a delight. Unfortunately, that's about where the positive portion of the brunch experience ends. Out of the table of seven, six people had to send their food back. Between the combination of cold, burned all of the food was inedible. The table actually felt awful that the food was extremely bad. Upon talking with Emma (for the manager never came over to understand what happened) she had the kitchen remake the food. This time, the food came out hot, but once again the food was burned! Pancakes, waffles, burgers, buns. You name it, it was burned. It was also kind of sneaky on the kitchen to burn one side but plate it with a less burned side facing up! Like hopefully we wouldn't notice? I wish the food was better, because this did seem like a good place to eat, but I can safely say that none of the seven of us will be going back there. It's also worth noting that the meal that was not sent back was a luke warm eggs Benedict with salmon - so I guess that one gets a pass. I would give this place a 1 star because while we were eating cold burnt food, the manager was sitting at a table behind us eating with their partner? that he was feeding with his silverware and didn't even have the audacity to come over and see what was happening or FIX THE ISSUE! By all means, just ignore us. This place gets a 2 stars simply because of Emma. She was very kind and nice. So Gray Tavern, please thank Emma for boosting your rating from a 1 to a 2. Everyone loved what they got and enjoyed the food here. Probably some of the best breakfast food I've had in a while.
