I came for the much desired hot chocolate and it didn't disappoint! The marshmallow was amazing and the hot chocolate was very rich! I want to know if I come back, if you'll put marshmallow like that around a cup and then fill it with ice cream! I was well taken care of by the staff. Everyone was wonderful! The ice cream needs some work; it really wasn't our favorite. It was very icy unfortunately. The cookie dough also only had about 2 or 3 pieces of cookie dough in the single scoop. Hopefully this is a one-off occurrence! The service was very quick and everyone was very nice and helpful! The building/space is a little dingy. I think they tried to paint it fun colors and put some decorations up, but it still reads a little outdated. If you're in the area looking for ice cream, it could check the box. I think they need some work though based on our experience. read more

I wanted to love Gray's more than I did. This is the second time I've been here where they have been out of things (malt, peanut butter cups). Prices are high for the portions. The Bristol location also has limited flavors compared to what they list on their website. No peanut butter ice cream. The ice cream temperature also seems a little less cold than most places. Something not right - the ice cream served here was very soft and melty, maybe a problem with the freezers. Went here with friends after seeing Gray's had good reviews for ice cream. I tried the ginger and lemon ice cream flavors, my friends got some others, but the others said that their ice cream were not good and threw most of it away within a block of the store and said worst ice cream that had had. So disappointing! We had driven here from Newport just to try Gray's! I thought my cone tasted okay, but it was very dripping, even on a cold day in the 50s, it was already running down with melting, texture not right. Not sure what, was more soft like a custard or soft serve than a hard pack ice cream. We moved on towards some other stores but my friends were so bummed we didn't try going to any other ice cream stores later that day. We had really good ice cream the previous day at another location, maybe my friends were just grumpy with the comparison, both shops had excellent reviews in yelp. Grays Ice Cream is located at the end of the pier next to Thames Bar and Grille. This is an extension of the original Gray's in Tiverton that's been around since 1923 and just as good, featuring waterfront views and fantastic treats. We had lunch next door at the Thames Waterfront Bar and Grill and this seemed a natural way to finish off the lunch meal. It was fairly warm and the cool ice cream just fit the scenic view and made a complete finish to the recent lobster roll. This location is more shack-like with cedar siding and a huge painted medallion of an ice cream cone adorning the gable above a small ordering window. While Gray's doesn't have dedicated seating, there are many benches and rails where you can eat in peace while enjoying Bristol Bay. The ice cream itself is quite the delight - it appears to be a high-milk content/fat variety that is very homemade in consistency and flavor, I sampled the pistachio (which I highly recommended) before going with the coconut which was delicious. My friend Sid went with the Cookie Dough which was also quite good. If you love ice cream as much as I do (and it's really the only dessert that I can't say "no" to) then you'll try Gray's. Located a short ways off of the often busy Thames St., Gray's Ice Cream is an enticing stop for a cool treat while walking around Newport. The prices are comparable to Ben & Jerry's and there are some fun sundae flavors such as strawberry cheesecake, s'mores, and coffee toffee. I tried the s'mores sundae which contained vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, melted marshmallow, and crushed graham cracker. The sundae was alright - there was almost equal parts marshmallow to ice cream (i.e. way too much marshmallow), and the ice cream was a bit too soft (it had the same texture as the melted marshmallow). Still, the hot fudge and crushed graham cracker were tasty additions. Overall, Gray's is a solid option for a scoop of ice cream or a sundae in Newport. I have been coming to Gray's, especially the original location in Tiverton for over 30 years, basically as soon as I could eat ice cream. It definitely is a family tradition. My father got me hooked on their pistachio ice cream. Oh my... the absolute best and the only flavor I ever get. Smooth, creamy, with NO NUTS which is why it's my favorite. You can't find pistachio without nuts anywhere else, and I love how they have stayed true to this for all these years. In contrary to the other review, I think Gray's Ice Cream has always been a popular icon for the locals with really friendly service and great icecream. The selection may not be as expansive as your Wal-Mart chain icecream shops, but the ice cream is really amazing and goes perfectly with a walk along the coast. I don't eat ice cream often, but whenever my friends come and visit me from out of states, I take them to try an Awful Awful (Newport Creamery) and then take them immediately here. Real deal fresh homemade ice cream. First bite and I was a believer. Unlike some ice cream, at Gray's you can really taste the cream. Ice cream was delicious, however I have never had a worse customer service experience in Bristol. My friends and I arrived at 6:45pm on Sept. 15 aware that they close at 7. As soon as we approached the window one of the workers stuck her head out and said "Just so you know we technically close in 10 minutes so there are no more frappes and no more waffle cones but we'll still serve you" in a very disrespectful tone. My group had about 8 people and after a few of us ordered she says "and who will be paying for all this" again VERY rude and disrespectful. In the middle of all of us ordering she runs outside and rips down the flag that says open clearly annoyed that a couple people had joined the line behind us. Also she was in such a rush that a few of my friends sundaes had whipped cream and hot fudge all over the cups they were practically falling over. As someone who has worked in restaurants and retail stores for years, I found this woman's actions and attitudes to be extremely disrespectful and if I had acted this way as a worker I would have gotten in serious trouble by my manager. If there are customers waiting, you serve them with a smile. I understand that you may want to go home but there is no reason to be so disrespectful to customers. I also overheard after that they turned people away who had been in line behind us. I will not be returning and I think someone should have a talk with this worker. read more

I had to write a review for the Bristol sub-sect of Gray's Ice Cream. The ice cream is some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Along with that, the Bristol location does give large portions, but it is pricey. The small here is probably about a medium at other ice cream shops, but they are approximately 3.50. It's location is fantastic, right along the docks that are lit up at night, in the center of other good restaurants with a quaint feel (cobblestone paths, etc.) It's location is also great if you'd like to walk around and check out the Bristol shops. I give Gray's 4 stars because I'd rather pay 3.50 for quality and support a longstanding Rhode Island tradition. But, if you are looking to buy ice cream for a family, particularly with small children, you'll spend about 20 dollars, which isn't reasonable in this economy. read more

Grey's Ice Cream is a staple of Bristol. To me, seeing its patriotic Open flag flying is a sign that summer has finally arrived. There are 3 qualities which make this place my top ice cream stop. First: The Location. It's beautiful, right on the water. They have chairs out sometimes, but if not it is so nice to sit on the edge of the dock and look out onto the bay. Some times boats dock nearby and the sailors are always so nice to talk to. Second: The People. They are all such sweethearts! They are great for a good conversation, but also super content to just hand you your cone and let your go on your merry way. They are also super accommodating, ask and thou shalt receive seems to be there motto. Really nice servers. One guy has been there for at least 2 summers now and I actually look forward to seeing him. Third: Of course, The Ice Cream. They have an old-fashioned flavor, everything is home made in Tiverton. They use buttermilk, so it is rich and full of flavor. They have the staples, but also unique choices such as rum raisin and frozen pudding. Sugar free options are sometimes available, along with sherbets. They always have great fro-yo, which is good for people saving calories. The waffle cones are to die for. I sometimes just get that and nibble on it all day. They're made on site and if you ask they will make a fresh one that minute. Also, they are happy to give stale cones to dogs :) They also do floats, ice cream soda, milkshakes and banana splits. If you're in bristol this summer, stop at Grey's!!
