    Great mugs

I've been here a bunch of times and to be honest, the food is really hit or miss, but I'll still come back. Pros: Very friendly service. Nice views. You can take a boat here. Good side options for potatoes - home fries, home fries with onions and peppers, and cape cod style - which are basically potato chips and are the real winner. Cons: Sometimes the food is bad. My wife ordered a veggie omelet which was disgusting. It was super wet and undercooked and they forgot the cheese. I had spinach in my omelet and it was wet thawed frozen chopped spinach. Pretty gross. OK: The coffee. It's kinda weak but their mugs are cute. Bottom line is I'll come back here but wouldn't say they have good food. If you want a safe bet, order something that is based around meat and cheese.

Fishermen ambiance makes you long to be on the water.

So glad that we did because it was excellent with great staff. We all really enjoyed the food. I loved my crab cake sandwich. It was so moist and flavorful. My husband loved his turkey platter. The gravy was delicious and the turkey was moist. My father in law enjoyed his burger. It was a good menu and tight in the middle of the cute little town. Would love to go back and try other things.

Served quickly and hot in a big, wide bowl. It looked good. Had small, irregularly sized potatoes and chopped carrots. The broth was a little thicker than I imagined or had tasted before in other restaurants, or in the one I make. Clams were tiny and, as you'd expect from a can. Not fresh clams. In fact, you can put all the clams found in chowder in a single tablespoon. Even found a whole bay leaf in it, which should have been removed before serving it. So, how is the chowder? I've had better from canned chowder, and the one I make is way better. Zero stars for the chowder. Next up is the Turkey platter with sliced turkey (hard and dry), 1 ice cream scoop of mashed potatoes (ok, nothing special), 1 ice cream scoop of stuffing (totally disgusting, and had corn in it), string beans (with vine still attached), gravy (terrible), and a little cup of cranberries (decent). Total fail. The waitress was ok, though stopping by every 5 minutes to ask if everything was good was quite annoying. The 'ice water gentleman' was great. You never asked for water, and when the glass was 1/2 empty, he was there refilling it. Great job! The final score of 2 stars is for the historic inn's ambiance and layout. We won't be back, and do not recommend.

Our friend was there waiting for us too. Our waitress was very professional when she approached and made sure she ordered everything correctly. The food came out in a timely manner and everything was great. It was Monday and they had specials that day for Mexican food. I like how they rotate the specials, depending upon what day of the week it is. If you're in Smithville, definitely stop here for food. It's worth it and it's a great experience. Be sure to look out for what entertainment they're having that day you're going there. That way you'll get the full experience. We'll definitely be back.

We enjoyed the quiet on the patio. On that night it was prime rib night and wing night. We took advantage of both of these specials. Prime rib was good. Big portion. Good balance of fatty to lean. Bit one note on the seasoning and sauces (horseradish, au jus). I thought the wings were just ok. A tad overcooked - it looked like the wings were cooked once, then held (or maybe not), sauce/flavor added, and then re-broiled. Good crust and HUGE wings but the double cooking process left them on the dry side. Really high quality blue cheese though. They do a pretty good french onion soup too.

Initially, things seemed promising as everyone placed their orders and most of the group received their meals fairly quickly. Unfortunately, another family member and I, who had both ordered the same entrée, were left waiting. Approximately 20 minutes later, when the rest of our party was nearly finished eating, our server informed us that the restaurant was out of tuna and that we would need to choose something else. It was very disappointing that it took so long for us to be notified. I ultimately ordered the mahi tacos, but they lacked flavor and were quite underwhelming. I attempted to ask for Tabasco sauce, but our server did not return to our table for quite some time to check on us. When she finally came back, I ordered another Tito's and soda and asked if it could be made as a double because my first drink tasted mostly like club soda. She informed me that the drink I had already been consuming was a double, which was surprising given the taste. At that point, I switched to water. Several others in our group were also disappointed with their meals and did not enjoy their selections. Between the long delay, poor communication, inattentive service, and disappointing food, the overall experience fell well short of expectations. Unfortunately, I do not plan to return.

Chicken francaise was ok, good lemon, but kinda sweet. Wait staff was attentive, but What was disappointing surprise was we were seated at 4pm, and early bird is 3 to 5. Chicken francaise was listed as an early bird choice. However we ordered 2 of those and both were charged full price at end of meal. When I asked if we ordered too late for the cheaper early bird price the waitress said "you didn't say the words 'early bird special' when you ordered" so you oay full price. Very surprised at lack of customer centric manner.. either ask the customer during order process since YOU know there are 2 prices possible, or assume if someone orders something on the early bird list, they want that price...... Net: future customers beware of that trick.... not sure I will ever go back.

Since we are talking about five years since my last review I am guessing the "leave them alone so that they can talk" philosophy of restaurant service is an institutional policy. Frankly, the service was better than the 2017 review but please we should not have to leave the table and walk into another area of the restaurant to find our server to ask to have our water glasses refilled. And, the kid from the land of the dead whom I at first thought was a customer lost attempting to find his parents was actually an employee. Someone at my table suggested I ask him for a refill of the water as he slowly walked by in a half stupor but I said "If he worked here he'd at least remove the completed soup bowls from our table (They remained until the entire meal was finished.)." I discovered later when he returned to clean a table top that he actually was an employee who might have been trained to notice diners in need of water or he could have actually said "Good evening, I have noticed your water glasses have nothing in them ... might I refill them for you?" But, then again perhaps its institutional policy. Having gotten that out of the way I have to say I was very impressed by the new entranceway, which replaced the old wooden railings that I remember front he splinters in my hand. It is a very attractive entrance and as always, noted in my prior review, you are greeted warmly and feel very welcome as you walk into this very attractive restaurant. The menu has changed since we were last here. We all agreed that it appears to have been reduced in offerings and in variety but that did not stop us from finding something. Clearly when you see the four stars and if you have reached this point of the review you have noted negatives but yet 4 stars. The food is delicious and well conceived! We didn't get anything extravagant but the French Onion Soup was truly special both visually and more importantly its blend of flavors along with the nice presence of perfectly cooked onions made those who ordered the soup very happy campers (Ok,, that's a phrase ... we are not camping out in the winter.). The sandwich was accompanied by some of the best "chips" we have ever had (All too often restaurants in their attempt to save money rather than offering French fries created chips that are burnt, overly salted or otherwise inedible.) and we all were reaching over to make sure not a speck was left. I ordered the Sweet Chili Signature Chicken Salad (Romanelli's has always been known for their awesome salads!), which was perfect for me but .... If you don't like Asian-style chili garlic sauce be forewarned that this salad's going to do more than tingle your tongue ... you are going to need water to cool it down and you already read about the lack of water refills. The chicken was perfectly cooked ... the croutons had me searching for more, and the blend of flavors made this a fantastic filling meal but .... As we left and I talked about the "heat" of my salad someone asked "Where was the bread or the rolls with dinner?" Where indeed was the bread basket that one used to receive as a guest at Romanelli's? Yes, COVID and increased costs have forced restaurants to save dollars wherever they could but we had folks with soup and me with a salad so a small dinner roll or a nice piece of bread would have been perfect but alas no bread. The menu features all those fabulous omelettes that make Romanelli's a great stop for breakfast (I wonder if you get toast or coffee refills.)! And, I am sure we will be back but next time I might ask that the water pitcher be left on the table when ordering so that the server will realize that many people need more than one glass of water with their meal especially if the water is their choice of beverage for the evening, afternoon, or morning.
