Sometimes you just need a taco. Great Burrito is a tiny hole in the wall, and it isn't winning any points on decor, but that's not something I care about. I mean, have you seen my apartment?* The tacos are $2.50 each, so I figured I should eat three. I opted for chorizo, carne asada, and a Great Burrito taco.** We sat down to wait in the table closest to the door. Do not do this, unless you have some sort of masochistic fetish about being smacked in the back of the head over and over again.*** The tacos were big. They load you up with a VERY generous serving of meat, onions, cilantro, hot sauce and some gloopy green sauce that can not possibly be guacamole. Um... so wow. I was drunk and it was late. I ate the whole damn burrito. I woke up with an alien baby trying to escape my innards. While eating this steak thing I kept asking myself: "WHY? Why am I eating this mystery meat, gnarly 12 lb thing?". There was no taste just filling. The "steak" was gray in color and had a thin and chewy consistency. For lack of better words, shit was just down right gross. If I was one of those conspiracy theorists I may even say this wasn't steak meat.... I definitely asked for guac and there was none, or none that recognizably tasted or looked like guac. The rice was old and sticky and not like sweet Asian sticky rice, it was like old Mexican sticky, like been sitting in that warming tin for 12 hours sticky. The burrito alien baby kept me up from about 3-6 AM in the morning. Could have been the 10 glasses of champagne and 3 vodka sodas but... Oh and the guy serving it up - not nice or friendly. I would hate working at a 24 hour place servicing drunkards but really, grunting needs to be involved? I won't be eating here... ever. I found a tasty taco in the very last place I expected. No, it wasn't at the bottom of my purse or under the seat of my taxi cab...it was hidden within the ugly, dingy pizza shop on the corner of 23rd and 6th Avenue. Despite "Burrito" in it's name, it's not completely clear when you walk in *what* these guys are serving up in this closet sized kitchen. There's some old pies lining the window, waiting to be reheated and sold to construction workers looking for a $5 lunch (2 slices and a coke). A few tables are stuffed into the cramped space and overweight, sweaty men are stuffed into the seats. The soft corn tortilla tacos run about $2.50 each and unless you have abnormally large appetite, two should do the job. The pollo a la plancha and carne asada is my typical one-two punch though I've heard some good things about the chorizo. Before heading to the Yelp Snow Ball, Hungry Boy and I stopped by here to fill our tummies, so we won't starve at the event - not that we ever starved at any of the Yelp events haha. I came here after a friend told me that he found tacos that were close to the ones in SF. It felt weird ordering tacos from a place named "Great Burrito" but we did it anyways. It's a hole-in-the-wall type of joint, that has about 4 tables against a wall. It isn't the cleanest, which made me feel a bit uneasy, but whatever, I just wanted some tacos. The tacos were really good, definitely not the same as back home but up there compared to the other ones I've had in NYC. The staff wasn't the nicest, but I guess that doesn't really matter as long as they get my order right. Also, if you dine-in then you pay after your meal. The fact that this place serves pizza as well makes me laugh but for me, it's merely a decoration because tacos are all I want. In my experience, Mexican food never failed me, and this spot is no exception! You walk in, and it feels like you're in Corona, Queens.. trust me, no complaints there! It can seat about 10-12 people which is great considering how small the place is. If you're all about cleanliness, and only eat at places with Food Inspection grades with A+ or higher, don't walk in. Garbage is right by the seating area, and all their beverages in the fridge are dusty [Nothing a napkin or wet-wipe can fix!] Luckily, I could care less! So no stars deducted there aha. Tortas are great, it's like a mexican sandwich, Tostadas are delicious too, they've got a nice crunch, and even with all the stuff they put on it, the crispy shells keep its form! Make sure to grab a handful of napkins because it's going to get messy! Also ask for Guacamole on the tostadas, it's a nice touch and NO it still won't fall apart! OH and ask for the Jalapeños on the side because they are MUY PICANTE! Service is straight-forward, you walk up to the counter, they take your order, you pay, they call you up when you're food is ready and then you feast. So I'm still pretty new to NYC and the hidden food gems this city has to offer. Being born and raised in the west coast and coming from a Mexican Background i had yet to find a a place I can say "damn that reminds me of my grandmas Cooking" WELL TODAY I FOUND IT!! This has to be hands down one if the best places I've sat and cleaned the plate because the food was that good. I had originally order a burrito to go but after telling to owner my struggle on finding good Mexican food he started to share his story which made me want to eat my food and enjoy it hot he continued to tell me the love he get from his community and most importantly his wife and kids! With his wife by his side, they changed my order (WHICH IM GLAD HE DID) and told me, he had a customer once come in here and order a burrito. She took photos she called a friend but never took a bit. I asked her why, she responded because it's to beautiful. With that being said you told me you want the food made with love so my wife and I wanted to serve you a meal instead of the burrito so you can really taste the love." With that I grabbed my beautiful plate of green chicken enchiladas topped with perfectly melted cheese along with a side of fresh frijoles, rice and chopped lettuce and tomato everything cooked to absolute perfection. It's late at night after a Mets game and we had taken the train back by the hotel. I checked Yelp and this place came up and was cash only. I only had $24 and wasn't sure what to get. Turns out I got two of the best beef and pork tacos I've ever had. Nice Mexican places don't have food this good. I was in here about a month ago looking for some food to go. I noticed they had beef tongue. Being a fan of Food Network, I've seen it cooked. I decided to give it a try. I ordered 2 beef tongue ( lengua) tacos. It was not long before I got my food. It was 2 soft tortillas per taco with the beef tongue, cilantro, and onions. The tongue was a but chewy but not as bad as I thought. It did have good flavor. The lime wedges were necessary to add some moisture. Order ahead for pickup it's cramped in here. I've defnitely had better tacos and burritos in this city. The tacos were soggy and the chorizo and lengua were definitely of a lower quality. The burrito rice was not even cooked correctly and was underdone. The al pastor seemed to be a mixture of other meats in it as well. Guess with the small grill top other meats got mixed in. Amazingly good! Just had the special of the day, Posole Rojo, which was hand written on a paper plate. Big chunks of hominy, and ribbons of pulled pork, in an intense fiery red broth flavored with cloves. And two avocado tostadas included! I have tried the tacos, burritos and pizza here and here's my verdict - mediocre food. The pollo tacos are probably the tastier of other food I have tried here. Pizza is claerly the worst. The quesadilla here is freaking HUGE. Lots of food for a very reasonable price. My only qualm is that I wish they'd packed my to-go meal with more care. The container wasn't closed when they handed me the bag, and despite my walking it slowly and carefully back to the office, it left a huge mess. Also, my friend and I ordered the exact same thing right after one another without any special requests, but mine was missing beans, sauces, napkins, and every thing else that came with his lol. For $3 a taco you really can't go wrong. They pack them with flavor! It's a really unassuming place. Looks like pizza but no no it's a teeny taco joint. Of course, I saw a guy munching down on this platter and I pointed to his dish and was like "I WANT WHAT THAT GUY IS EATING" and the cook nodded and took my order. 2 chicken and 1 steak. Officially became my Go-To spot after work. I bartend, and get off work pretty late....and in that area, nothing food-related is really open. This spot is just heaven. They stay open all day until 5am, to reopen at 9am.Those hours alone are super convenient. The service is very attentive and the staff are super friendly and quick with making the food. My favorite plate is the Bistec Encebollado (Steak and onions dish with rice lettuce and beans); This plate is super inexpensive and literally is loaded with so much food. Worth the price for sure!!! A hole-in-the-wall just steps away from the 23rd Street F train where you can get your hands some pretty darn good Mex. In San Diego, where I come from originally, you wouldn't think twice about dipping into a place that looks like this for authentic Mexican fare. It's the way almost all legit taco shops look. In New York, however, I get why someone might strut by without considering grabbing a bite. Shabby might be a euphemism. But what they lack in space, decor, a good name, and visually appealing signage...they make up for with above average tacos, burritos, tortas, and many other plates of Mexican food. And the fact that they're open until 4:00am doesn't hurt earlier. Strangely, they sell pizza too. Who knows what it tastes like, as I'm always there for the Mexican food. I work a couple of blocks away so I eat here atleast once a week. Nothing can beat Simple, honest, no-frills food and this place offers some of the best. I've tried most of their tacos but hands-down my favorite has to be the carnitas. There's something about tender, pulled, just-off-the-skillet pork that is just hard to top. I love the fact that they use two tortillas for their tacos cause things can get messy when you add on the onions, guac, and hot sauce on top of that bad boy. Every bite is just *chef's kiss* perfection. And at $3.50 a taco it's a great value. My other go-to order is their pancita. An extremely hot bowl of pig intestines served in a hearty broth. Squeeze some lime in and go to town. Perfect during the winter months. The seating is limited and during the pandemic they only have 1 table set-up for outside dining.
