Gre.Co is everything I could want from Greek food - delicious, affordable, and authentic. They check all those boxes in the most unassuming way, and they do it with passion and sincerity. They are located in a lower level location on Newbury which adds to their lowkey vibe, but it works for what they're offering. You walk into their tiny biz which has just enough space to seat a few people and cater to the busy crowds that come in. On the wall is their purposefully limited menu for gyros and loukoumades. My favorite gyro is, hands down, the Classic Bifteki. It's ground beef, but rolled into something similar to a cylinder-esque meatball, with spicy whipped feta which has just enough kick to spice up the gyro. It also comes stuffed with tomato, onion, and fries! The taste is overwhelmingly good, and fresh would be an understatement. You not only see them make the entire thing in front of you, but the prep kitchen is completely exposed, so you can see the team prepping all the veggies right in front of you, as if you were in the kitchen with your mother. Now let's get to the mother-approved loukoumades. These are Greek street donuts: lightly fried dough balls covered in a variety of toppings. My favorite are Yaya's, which come covered in hazelnut praline, oreos, and powdered sugar. Probably one of the best snacks you could ask for. Four stars for food, one star off for the combination of unclear menu and semi-aggressive upselling. Went in after one of my friends got the chicken and charred eggplant and gave it a thumbs up. I ordered a lamb with eggplant and tzatziki sauce, "traditional" style (i.e., onion, tomato, fries) and a bottled Greek lemonade. The lamb was a tiny bit dry, but I found their fries to be better than Saloniki's and the overall flavors to meld better. The weird thing was that throughout the ordering process, the person at the counter kept asking me if I wanted more sauce, the traditional style, etc. As other reviews have noted, this generally adds more time in line; however, in contrast to those reviews, I didn't find Gre.co to be cost effective because 1) the menu was confusing and didn't list many of these options and 2) the person didn't notify me of any relevant prices. For reference, I found out only on my receipt that traditional style doesn't cost more but adding another sauce is 75 cents (although the charge was ok because I assumed there would be one, it would have been nice to know more, especially since the amount was not really detectable in the gyro - maybe a little side container?). Moreover, the person really talked up the bottled drinks, so I ended up getting a bottle of lemonade (not made in house). Given that it was less than 12 oz, I didn't ask how much it would be. I really should have, because it ended up being $3.50 -- but in all honesty, I did not think that a drink would cost a dollar more than its equivalent at Eataly, of all things. (Note also that there is tap water available even if bottled is prominently displayed.) Altogether, my lamb gyro and drink cost me ~$14.50. Altogether, I think these issues could be fixed with a clearer menu, even if the current handwritten on brown paper looks nice (insert economics joke about menu costs here). I work on Newbury St and today my coworkers wouldn't stop talking about Gre.Co. It actually made me quite hungry so I decided to give them a try. I felt in love from the minute I walked in. I always walk by them and why did I wait so long to try them?! I honestly don't have a good reason. But I absolutely loved the environment. Their decor is super laid back. They have a little nice outside sitting and the restaurant looked so neat and clean. Mind you, everything on the menu looked delicious! I tried the classic chicken gyro with tzakziki sauce. Outdoor seating is really awesome because it gets very cramped inside, no real seating- just a big family style bench inside. Extremely long wait times for a build your own place. I was in Boston for work, so after dinner, Yelp and Instagram led me to Gre.Co to find their famous Loukoumades, which are Greek street food donuts. The shop is conveniently located on Newbury Street, and was very busy for a weeknight. It is a casual Greek eatery, with several tables for dine in, but is more like a trendy take out spot. The staff was really friendly and helped my friend and I decide on which of the 5 or so variations of Loukoumades to get. Based on their recommendation of the most popular ones, we went with Yaya's Loukoumades which consists of the donuts topped with Merenda (Greek Nutella), Oreos, and powdered sugar. After about 5 minutes, our order was ready. My friend and I grabbed a seat in one of the cute little nooks near the front. The donuts were still very hot, as they were freshly taken out of the fryer. I will admit that the combination we chose was a little too sweet for me, but so delicious nonetheless. Recently came back here and got another lamb pita only this time with the charred eggplant instead of the spicy feta. The lamb pita was just as good as I remembered it and the charred eggplant was perfection. I noticed that they didn't have their homemade spicy sauce on the tables anymore which was I was a little disappointed about, not sure if it was just that day or that they just don't have it anymore. I'm giving Gre.Co one less star than last time because I also ordered the zucchini fries which turned out to be like soggy potato chips. Basically it is super thin slices of zucchini deep fried. I must have timed it just right; there was no line when I walked in but a line out the door when I got my food to-go. The restaurant itself is tiny but they have a handle of seats indoors and a nice little patio on Newbury Street. Clean, modern decor. Gre.Co needs to workout a few kinks, but they definitely have the potential for a quick, cost-effective lunch on Newbury Street! The space is super small, since there is only room for about 20 people in the basement space of Newbury Street, but they decorated the interior with a mixture of bar-style seating and bench seating complete with pillows. If you are ordering a salad, this process is pretty confusing. On the menu, you can visibly see that you need to choose your 1) Base 2) Protein Filling 3) Sauce. However, if you are choosing salad, you need to choose the type of salad in the Soup & Salad portion of the menu: Horiatiki, Cretan, or Mykonian. I realized a lot of people were asking the same questions to the cashier, which definitely made the line to order unnecessarily long. They could improve the process by having someone explain the menu to those who were confused in line and placing their order in advance of the cash register. I opted for the MYKONIAN SALAD with PORK & SPICY WHIPPED FETA. For ~$9, they give you so much more quantity than the other competing fast casual Greek restaurants. The meat was pretty tough, they gave too much basalmic dressing, and the spicy whipped feta was nothing special, but if you are looking for a lunch that will fill you up for a relatively cheap price in Back Bay, this may be your spot. read more

I met the owner and several employees who were all greek and very helpful with menu suggestions, but also just super proud of what they were putting out. I got a bowl and a gyro and I would suggest going for the gyro. It's what they're known for and like, the more carbs the better in my opinion. But OBVIOUSLY you have to get the loukamoudes. The inside has nice wooden tables and seats, and there is one long wooden bar-style seating with stools in the middle. The overall look of this place is simple and clean - bamboo poles lining the ceiling, white brick walls with black lettering, and wooden tables/seats. FOOD // As the name of the restaurant suggests, this place takes pride in serving authentic Greek food. I ordered the CLASSIC PORK PLATE, which comes with pork gyro, four slices of pita bread, tomatoes, onions + sauce of choice + one side of choice. I chose the Tzatziki as my sauce and Zucchini chips as my side. The meat was super juicy and not dry at all - there were a couple of burnt/crisp pieces, but you should expect that when going into eat gyro meat. The pita bread was warm and chewy. My favorite was the Tzatziki sauce, which was so creamy and good, not too vinegary or clumpy. My other favorite was the Zucchini chips which were fried nice and crisp on the outside, but preserved the taste of Zucchini on the inside. I've been meaning to try this place and I'm so glad I got to enjoy it on such a beautiful day. The line is always long whenever I pass by, and it was not any shorter on a weekday. The line moves fairly quickly but the wait for the actual food can get a little long. In fact, I was waiting for my food to eat in, and heard them tell two people who ordered their food online that their food won't be ready for pick-up for another 40-45 minutes. Something to note in case you decide to order online expecting the food to be ready quickly. The restaurant is a smaller location but it makes you feel like you're in Greece with the decorations. The people working there were friendly and helped explain the whole menu to us. I would definitely go back again! Edit: I went back and tried the "Yaya's" flavor too and oh my goodness. They were even better than the classic (mostly because it has chocolate all over--merenda, their version of Nutella, which is 100 times better than normal Nutella). Tiny place downstairs on Newbury Street. Very white decor and brightly lit, makes taking photos for your IG pretty good! I had the classic lamb pita. The lamb was tender and flavorful and the pita bread was very good too. The lamb one came with tomato jam as the sauce which was fine but I probably would have preferred good old tzatziki sauce instead. Instead of getting the classic combos, you can make your own Chipotle style as well. The loukoumades (Greek donuts) are absolutely delicious and a must order. I wanted a classic (which came with honey, walnuts and cinnamon), but just wanted to sub out walnuts for a different nut. But since it's a "special order", costed me an extra 2 bucks for the literally same amount of ingredients. That was annoying, 1 star deduction. My dinner for one with a pita, loukoumades and soda came out to 20 bucks, not cheap... The last issue I have with this place is the flow. Your order in the back and pick up in the front, that's totally normal and cool. To keep the space minimal, unfortunately there's no where to get additional napkins etc unless you go up to the counter to ask. My pita was dripping all over my arm and the 2 pieces of napkin was not doing the trick. Lastly, there's no clear indication where to drop off our empty tray. So you just end up picking either the back or the front whereever you're closer to and someone will notice and come take it from you. Been to this small Greek restaurant several times as I work nearby. My ethnicity is Greek so I can be critical of many Greek restaurants in and around Boston. This place is a gyros focused eatery but does have several old school traditional dishes as well. I am well pleased with their gyros as they are as close to the ones I used to get in Greece. They include the fries in the body of the gyro...which I love. Their tzatziki is very well balanced (not overly garlicky) and the pork meat is tasty. Portions are nice. They also have lots of traditional Greek sweets...baklava etc. Of all the gyro places that have popped up recently, this place takes the prize. Too many of these other joints try to be to cute and fusion focused rather than making the food as authentic as possible and with the appropriate ingredients. So I'm only like 1/8 Greek, but my maiden name is shortened from Patronakis, so I like to claim the Greek heritage...and I LOVED Gre.Co. The open-kitchen environment feels both Greek and Euro-doner-kabob shop. I love seeing the meat spits (why I don't know) and the employees kiss-greeting other Greek guests and speaking with them in Greek. One wall has a few inspirational Greek words and their definitions painted on it. All this to say, it felt authentically inspired from the start (but also Newbury-y and designed for non-Greek people, of course). I had the lamb pita (pita, tomato, onion, lamb, fries, tomato jam) but subbed tzaziki for the tomato jam. Prices and fullness-levels line up roughly with Chipotle. Oh, and the pita was delicious! Also had feta fries and golphos loukamades, both were great. You can see the cooks prepping everything from scratch. I watched the guy skewer marinated lamb meat for the spit and then pull dried herbs off the stem to add to something else. I think they try to source locally (or also from Greece...) I got the classic lamb gyro and substituted the tomato sauce with the classic tzatziki! The fries inside were well seasoned and had a crispy exterior with a very soft, creamy texture inside! The lamb meat was juicy and delicious and was portioned well. I think I'd have to eat two or three to be full, but for the normal appetite, I'd say one would have you feeling satisfied, rather than stuffed. Everything put together tasted great and their hot sauce was amazing! It adds nice flavor and a little heat to the gyro. Last time I had fries put inside my gyros was when I was in Athens. These can't beat those but I think it's very close! If only it were 3 euros, like it was over there then I'd give this place 8 stars! All kidding aside, I'd highly recommend if you're on Newbury looking for a quick bite. Only downside is that I see this place being very busy often and it's pretty crowded inside aka not enough seats! This place is ah-mazing. We went during Marathon Monday weekend, and it was PACKED. Everyone must know how great the food is though, because everyone in line waited patiently while the smell of marinated meat wafted through the air and we allowed our mouths to water. I don't think I've ever had greek food that's really blown me away, until Gre.Co. I came here with friends to get some dessert after our lunch. We ordered the classic and yaya's loukomades (greek doughnuts). They were absolutely delicious and weren't overly sweet. $5-6 was a little bit steep for a dessert, but totally worth it (especially if you split with friends)! During that visit, I saw them making their pitas that looked so bomb. So, of course, I went back the next day for lunch (don't judge me). I ordered the classic loukanko pita (pork + leek sausage) and my boyfriend ordered the classic bifteki pita (ground beef). I never thought that Greek pita sandwiches were that exciting, until I tasted Gre.Co. We both loooved our orders; it was somewhat reminiscent of a "healthier" fat sandwich. A bit on the oily side, but wasn't overwhelming. I also really appreciate the way they assemble the pita. By using a patty instead of meat chunks and the overall conical instead of the typical spherical shape of a pita sandwich, it doesn't lead to a hot mess of everything falling out while you're eating it. The seating inside is very limited and it really does get crowded. The first time I went was a weekday and it was PACKED with people on their lunch breaks. On a weekday at lunch time, this is a great time to see wearers of the midtown uniform (gingham button-up, grey Patagonia vest, sensible shoes) on the prowl for lunch. Thing is, the local working folk know what's up, and there is a reason this place is packed at lunchtime. My pork gyro (tender pork, tzatziki, tomato, onion wrapped in a soft pita) was scrumptious, and everyone in our group enjoyed their gyros, plates, and salads. Even the Actual Greek Person in our contingent-- who has a discerning tongue for cuisine-- was impressed by the food and the iced coffee. Gotta try the donuts next time. This is one of those places that showed up in my Instagram ads and definitely caught my attention. It is what I would call a fast casual place, but with great quality! I recently stopped eating meat, and I used to love gyros, but I had struggled to find a place that had veggie gyro options!! Greco's veggie gyros were absolutely amazing - similar to falafel, but made with more vegetables. They had a vegan option as well, whIch I didn't try. The patties were flavorful, and they added fries to inside the pita, which was my favorite part. We also got the zucchini crisps, which had come fresh out of the fryer! They were a bit oily, but would definitely suggest if you are feeling indulgent this place is awesome! read more

Super yummy! We came during a heat wave and it was a bit too warm inside, but the food is great and they had some vegetarian options that were delicious. Growing up in NYC I ate street gyros through most of my childhood and after moving to Boston I was always put off by the lack of availability. Luckily for me GreCo does a great job filling that space. The space in small but nice, I love the seating against the wall where you can kind of just settle in and get cozy. The prices are also very reasonable for what you get. I've been sticking with the classic bifteki pita which has been delicious. I also really enjoy the house hot sauce. It adds some kick but is flavorful and not overpowering. I tried a bite of my friends lamb which was also good but the bifteki is definitely the one for me. read more
