Not sure if it was just mine but the Greek salad they served was incredibly salty. It looked great but I could barely get through each bite. It may have been the feta cheese or the olive juice that was a bit excessive for my liking. The hummus and pita were fine - it's a cinnamon hummus which I hadn't had before. The gyro comes with shawarma, aka long slices of meat. There's lettuce, tomatoes, white creamy sauce, and the meat itself, all within the gyro bread. Personally, I thought there was too much white sauce so I used it to tame the saltiness of the salad which kind of worked. Another note is that the outdoor seating attracts a good amount of flies so beware if you are eating in (or out)! read more

I was super excited when I drove up to the shack and realized it was indeed a shack! I knew this was going to be either really good or really bad. I am happy to report that the shack is very good with a simple menu and well priced. I would definitely get the combo plate as the portions were more than I expected and the sandwich was large! My wife and I stopped by today and it was not what we expected. Its just a small spot with outdoor seating only. We ordered the chicken gyros meal with salad and hummus. It was incredible! I've been to Greece and all the surrounding countries. The hummus was very Greek (thicker than other regions). The pita bread was fresh and tasty. All the veggies were fresh. We were very impressed and highly recommend it. The dude working there was also very knowledgeable and very kind. We will go back next time we're in Redding. read more

I am not a greek food specialist so excuse my review. The food was tasty. I can't say amazing because I don't have many greek encounters to compare to but I'd eat at this shack again. Yes, it is a shack and not meant for fancy dining but the outside seating (only) is shaded and nice. Downside was sitting next to the highway and smelling a garbage can. The High way is fixable but a funky smelling trash can should be next to the dining area. Really, if you are going to have the trash a foot away from a table you might want to wash it out often, like daily. Other than that I say yes, eat here. Same people own the drive thru xanders but I haven't tried that yet, I hear they have better gyros but no falafel. Here we had the falafel wrap, lamb gyro, and hummus...all very yummy in the tummy. This costed $18 which I feel was realistic. Bottom line: I liked the food and plan on going back. Only out side seating which is well shaded. Loud highway and smelly cat (trash). This was just ok. I probably won't get anything from here again. It wasn't awful, but not great either. I had the falafel sandwich. I've had better falafels and thought it was weird that it didn't have tzatziki sauce. The gyro was ok, but the sauce was all on one side of it. We've been looking for a Mediterranean place for quite sometime now and there we found Greek Shack. The owner was very nice and the food was pretty great. I ordered the lamb gyro and my husband ordered the chicken gyro combo. We thought both dishes were great and delicious. Obviously we can't compare them to the gyros you'd get in the Bay Area (we moved up from San Francisco), but we thought for a little Greek shack in Redding, it was pretty awesome! I have to say their falafels are OUTSTANDING and I could definitely compare their falafels to some of the really good falafels you'd get in Bay Area. They were super delicious and I think they should have a falafel side order on their menu where I can buy a dozen of them at a time if I'm craving them. I started eating here a few years ago when the owner was the only one working. Since then, I continue to go back whenever I have a craving for quality food, fresh ingredients, all at a reasonable cost. The quality of the gyros has stayed up the whole time. The only thing I miss is they had a "secret menu" with shawarma and a couple of other things on it. But when I asked last time, there was no knowledge of this. I can't really complain though, the gyro was amazing! I would have to say one of the greatest things about this place are the people who work there. And the baklava was awesome. For a dessert, it wasn't too sweet but at the same time it left a lingering taste of semi sweetness. The falafel: fell apart after breaking through the baked outer shell and tasted delicious when paired with the taziki I stole from my companions' plates. Stopped over in Redding as we made our way to Portland. My wife found this place on Yelp when we were searching for dinner options. Got there about 6pm-ish, and were the only ones there besides a guy waiting for his to-go order; always a concerning site when you're trying a new place. Overall, a great little joint for some Greek food. Here's the rundown: Wife-Gyro plate (ordered Lamb but she got chicken...) with humus and Greek salad (got toubouli instead). Well seasoned gyro (my first time with chicken). Loved how it was shaved chicken not just pieces of chicken shoved into a pita. Humus was okay. Myself--Falafel sandwich. Delicious sandwich. My favorite vegetarian sandwich. And a Greek Salad side. The salad was refreshing and made to order. They were out of Turkish coffee but was offered iced tea?? Jr--Chicken Gyro. He enjoyed it. More time is needed to work out startup pains, but with tasty food as the anchor they'll get there. Best gyro ever!!! That's what my husband said after eating his. And that's saying a lot because we're from Detroit, where Greek restaurants are as common as McDonalds. I had the falafel wrap and it was also delicious. Customer service was excellent. They take your order at the window, and instead of calling your name when it's ready, being it to your table and even offer to get napkins or anything extra you might need, even though it's all there on the counter for you to grab. The little covered patio is nice and the bathroom was surprisingly clean. We've decided this will be the ONLY place we stop when passing through Redding. read more

Had the chicken gyro combo. The salad was really good. Didn't expect the chicken to be the way it was. It was marinaded to a really good taste. A bit like the chicken was made into a loaf and sliced thinly, so don't expect the usual ground chicken or chicken breast. That gyro was loaded and huge too. Definitely have to eat it with two hands. And the hummus, it is by far the best I have ever had. Called my order in and the gal seemed rushed, didn't take my name or number. I got there 15 minutes later. No one was there. She took my money so I thought the food was ready. Not the case, I stood there another 10 minutes and she started cooking the chicken. If I had not already paid I would have walked away. I'm gonna start out by saying I'm a third generation Greek. My grandmother came over from Greece when she was 10, and made the best traditional greek food, from Spanicopita to Baklava to Avgolemono, and nothing I've ever tried comes close. I've been reading the reviews on here for a while now, and about two weeks ago I made it a priority to stop by on one of my lunch breaks. I was able to call in for pick up, which made the overall experience even better. I ordered the Chicken Gyro, the Spinach Pie (Spanicopita), and a piece of Baklava. I was not dissapointed. It was fresh and delicious. The Gyro was huge, more than enough to fill me up, and the Spinach Pie was cooked to perfection. The Baklava was crunchy, light, and the perfect consistancy. I was impressed. Though not as good as my faimilies recipies, the Greek Shack is a very close second. I will be there often. read more

I have been here 3 times and it keeps improving. My last experience here was great. Humus was delicious and creamy smooth, Gyro's were huge - we took some home. I wish they were closer in... the college kids would discover it and like Wilda's it is a great meal at under $6. The food was excellent, but the guy who cooks and serves is awesome. There was a lot of meat and it was so good. I'm planning to come back very soon. So, I have to agree with the other reviewers that this place is outstanding. I almost ordered another one but I was too full and I didn't want to make a pig out of myself. I have been steadily patronizing the Greek Shack since I wrote my first review, and a few months ago they revamped the menu and the outside (painting it a delightful teal color and adding a bamboo privacy fence). I received an email from the owner, Amin, asking me to give the place another try. Little did he know, I already noticed how much better the falafel had gotten! The falafel itself is spicier, heavier on sesame seeds, and a much better fried crispy texture. The contents of the wrap itself also got an upgrade - new additions include pickled turnip (that hot pink mystery vegetable inside) and pickles. My sister and I visit the shack often, and Amin is always so friendly and accommodating. You can tell he has a real passion for his food, and his customers. The Tabouleh salad is great, but not for you if you don't like parsley. The Mediterranean combo (Falafel wrap, tabouleh salad, hummus and pita for $10) is fantastic, and the hummus is great (although I love a chunky hummus, which seems hard to locate!). Today when I visited I saw the food of my dreams, which I will order next time, the $1.99 Spinach Pie; basically a huge Spanokopita (phyllo dough stuffed with spinach and feta). Do not leave without some of the amazing chili sauce, unless you are sensitive to spice. It's a hot one. Went there for lunch today, passing through Redding on our way home from Ashland. We each got the lamb gyro combo and it was delicious! The gyro was large, stuffed full of meat, with fresh romaine and tomatoes, and lots of tzatziki sauce. The hummus was lemony and creamy. The salad was fresh and the dressing was delicious as well. The combo really was a lot of food, so neither of us could finish the hummus. We asked for hot sauce and the nice girl behind the counter gave us a chili paste that was wonderful. It really spiced up both the gyro and the hummus, just the way we like it. We pass through Redding twice a year, sometimes more, and this is our new go-to lunch stop. Gyros have never been one of my favorite go-to things and it has been several years since Ive had a good one. While driving thru Redding starving I opened my yelp app and was just blocks from this little greek shack that got rave Yelp reviews. (Thank you to those yelpers who put up photos with descriptions love having pictures before ordering! And especially photos of the menu not only so I know the best things to order and prices, but the the menu helps so much when we need to know options when Im traveling with friends who have food restrictions. All so helpful in making the final decisions!) The Place: This is a very tiny little blue shack in a parking lot between a liquor store and a gas station close to the street not set back. I dont know if its a good or bad area at night and I didnt catch their business hours but it seemed perfectly friendly during the day (no transients hanging about the liquor store etc). There was outdoor covered seating, maybe six tables. I'm not one for sitting outside that close to a busy noisy street while enjoying lunch so I got mine to go. The Cleanliness: This is critical to me so I always poke my nose into where food prep is if I can. Easy to see here as it is a shack. The food was covered, kept cooled, everything seemed sanitary, hands were clean, staff looked sanitary. There was a very very young child in there, which always makes me hesitant, but she wasnt playing with the food or anything or I would have walked away. So overall it seemed 'safe'. The Service: A young girl took my order with a great smile, and patiently explained my options. The woman making my food brought it out with a smile and an 'enjoy'. Really good attitude goes a long way for me. Those earn better tips, better reviews, and repeat visits. Also important when I order To-Go I dont want to have to ask for napkins, plasticware, sauces, etc. that would automatically come with a meal if was being eaten there. These people were perfect and everything was there without me having to ask. Finally, The Food: I ordered the Lamb combo: lamb gyros, hummus (with hot sauce on the side), and greek salad. $12. To go. They are very generous in their meat portions, not stingy with 3 little slices of meat like some places, no here it was cut thick and piled on so I felt it was worth the money. The meat really tender, juicy not dry. Not real strong lamb flavor and no crispy edges which I do like in gyros but excellent just the same. The gyro bread was soft, not doughy, and was warm. The romaine lettuce crisp and cool. But The SAUCE! The sauce OMG its by far the BEST Tzatziki sauce I've ever had! Really rich flavored with fresh dill taste but not overpowering in any way. Next time I'm asking to buy a tub of it to go cuz there are alot of foods I could put that sauce on its just sooooo goood. It truly made the gyro exceptional. They were generous with it also and some places you always have to ask for extra. Also next time I will try the gyros with the grilled onions which was an option. The greek salad was a very nice surprise. The dressing was very herby and really delicious, they were nicely generous with the great olives and most surprising was the super good quality feta not that weird hard brick stuff but actual creamy quality feta. The romaine was cool and crisp and fresh. My hummus was just ok plain but I like it spicy I had asked for hot sauce on the side. The hot sauce (which was really good) then made my hummus was perfect. The pita that came with the hummus needed to be cooked much much crisper for me but thats a personal preference. This place is 5 stars! My meal was worth $12 plus the tip to me. I had absolutely no complaints here. I will make a point to be back and will be telling all my friends. I hope your meal and service here will be as perfect as mine was. read more
