This is only my second time having Burmese food. We got take out and I didn't go to the restaurant myself. We tried a variety of dishes, some of which I'm unsure of the name. We started with the soup, which I believe is called ohn no khao swè. I think it was referred to as the laksa noodle soup. It was unique with noodles and slices of hard boiled eggs. I enjoyed the crispy bits in it. Next, we had the tea leaf salad. I usually don't like nuts in my salad, but it added a nice texture. The chicken pad kee maw (drunken noodles) were bland. I didn't enjoy the pork dish or curry beef. The meats were dry. The curry fish was better. Maybe I'll go try their other dishes next time, but it's not high on my list. read more

We love Burmese food and was excited to find this place. We ordered 4 dishes listed as Burmese but found it was not authentic, more fusion-like. It was tasty, nothing out of the ordinary. This is my first review and I felt compelled due to Rachel's parting comment when we were paying for the bill. She informed us that because we made a reservation for 4 people and only 3 of us showed up, they normally charge $10 for no-shows but she was not going to do it THIS TIME!!! How are they defining "NO SHOW"? 3 of us were there, and we spent close to $100. "NO SHOW" means NONE of us showed up. We will not ever return, not only because of this but because the food was not unique enough. We've had better South Asian food elsewhere. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for some time and decided to try it out for my birthday. I ended up ordering the tea leaf salad, as it seems to be one of their most popular items. I really loved it, but my mom said it was a bit too spicy for her (I think the secret ingredient here is coriander, which has a degree of spice to it. We also tried the veggie lumpia and potato samosas, which were all really good and had this amazing sweet chili sauce that went with each. The owner was even so nice as to give me and extra container to take home with me. They have lots of vegetarian options as well. I can't wait to go back. Wow, this once great restaurant has really fallen by the wayside. The hours have been cut and if you go in for lunch, even though they are supposed to be open till 2pm, meaning you can be seated up till 2pm in normal restaurant operations, this place the owner will tell you you better arrive by 1pm, cause she wants everybody out and gone by 2pm! So, in reality, they're just open for 1 1/2 hrs for lunch starting at 11:30am till 1pm really. Just post last seating at 1pm then! I can see the owner just doesn't have the real time to invest in her business, with her family problems she has to attend to, but that's no reason for the customers to suffer. Maybe I wouldn't mind so much, if the food were still spectacular, but the food is gone downhill as well. The tea leaf salad was about the same as always, but the Laksa was not as tasty and the portions size is smaller, also missing are the toasted garlic bits that used to come with the laksa. I posted pics of the difference. What was once my most fave Pad Kee Mao (spicy basil noodles or drunken noodles) anywhere, was a soggy mess this last time. I posted pics of the difference! We've had other dishes here that were basically lackluster in stark contrast to the once spectacular flavors of Burmese food. I cannot recommend Green Elephant for Burmese food anymore. The owner is eyeing retirement soon, so her heart is just not into the best customer experience as it once was. read more

What heavenly, delicious food! Each spoonful of every curry I've had here is astoundingly flavorful. The layers are both subtle and robust, the nuances exquisite. I've probably eaten hundreds of tea leaf salads. I order it everywhere it is served and I make it at home. I also adore mohinga and order that each time I eat at a Burmese restaurant. The Green Elephant's rendition of these two dishes is outstanding. If I didn't live 2 hours away, I'd be a regular fixture at the Green Elephant. If I didn't have occasional business nearby, I'd still drive 2 hours just to eat here. Tonight I had their tea leaf salad and mohinga. And I also took home 3 curries -- mango pickle, Penang and coconut. Of course I had to taste them all when I got home. Let's see if there is any left by tomorrow night. read more

So delicious! Our new favorite restaurant for authentic South East Asian cuisine! Our waitress was also the owner and she very friendly and helped steer us to a most enjoyable meal! To start we had the vegetable lumpia and the tea leaf salad followed by the chili jam chicken and the brandy fried rice (which was loaded with vegetables including lotus root)! We drove up the parking lot and our first thought is, "this looks deserted". Don't be fooled by what you see outdoors. It's pretty small look on a small shopping strip. Very mom and pop style. We walked in attracted to the beautiful decor of Burmese and a bit of Thai. Correct me if I am wrong with the Thai thing. But everything was beautiful. It was pretty casual on a weekday early evening. The hostess welcomed us in and told us to choose any table. We chose one and started to enjoy the environment. It was nice and cool inside than driving outside. We ordered a few dishes. Food was so good. I really liked the flavors of the dishes. I forgot the names of the dishes that we ate but I took photos of them. The hostess was so nice. She even explained about the owl figurine in the restaurant. She explained how when you enter a Chinese restaurant you see that Cat. In Burma it's an owl. Pretty cool info. Food is really good. Should try it. read more

A small restaurant with an even smaller staff, you will likely have to wait a bit longer than "normal". In our case, we arrived at Noon, our orders were taken in about 15 minutes, and the first of our two entrees arrived 20 minutes after ordering. The second arrived about 5 minutes later, and since the first was soup and we were sharing, this was ideal. There was only the owner, a very friendly and helpful woman, waiting tables, so how could service not be a bit slow? We had "Thai" Coconut Chicken Curry and MoHinGa (Burmese Cat Fish and Rice Noodles Soup). The Curry was outstanding! More flavorful than normal Thai curry, with somewhat different spices. It came with rice and a small egg roll (actually, lumpia), along with a small cup of Chicken broth soup. The soup was delicately flavored (and not overly salty). The spiciness level is 1-10, we ordered a '6' for the curry (after the waitress/owner warned us a '7' might be very spicy, despite our assurances we are used to heat). Well, '6' was perfect for me, but my husband said he actually would have preferred a '5'! Yep, it was spicy, but oh so good. The Mohinha was an interesting experience. Good thing that we had it before the curry, because it was (like the Chicken soup) delicately flavored. But it was thick and obviously made over many hours. (In fact we were told it was cooked over 2 days, and not to expect any chunks of fish as they were liquefied.) I certainly enjoyed it, but don't expect to be bowled over by the flavor (but it IS tasty!). If you enjoy stews with some noodles, you'll probably enjoy the Mohinga. I'd get it again. read more

Not worth the wait. Granted at least the lady is super nice and also tells you there will be at least an hour wait, but it's definitely not worth it. Burmese is one of our favorite cuisines, and moving from the Bay Area we were so thrilled to find there was a Burmese place around! The first time we came we arrived at 5:20 so shortly after they opened. She immediately told us it would be at least an hour for our food so "maybe not tonight" is what we were told. We left and figured we'll just come back another time or get take out. 2 weeks later we called right when they opened to order takeout and no answer. So I drove from west Roseville to get there and order in person. Same deal, was told it would be at least an hour. Decided to wait and we ended up waiting an hour and half. During the course of this time everyone that came in was told it would be at least an hour and a half, many of them left, and the owner CLOSED the restaurant at 6:30. We got our food at 7pm and took it home. The tea leaf salad was lacking in flavor and didn't seem to have all of the ingredients of tea leaf salads we've had other places. The chili jam chicken was tasty but was essentially thai curry chicken. The beef curry had no curry sauce. I would rather use the 2 hours to drive to San Jose and get Burmese there. read more

Heaven came to Earth one day, and we were there to enjoy the meal. Wow! Just as good as it gets, we ordered up a storm and they got nothing but praise from us on every dish. We came back here to experience Burmese and some South Eastern dishes and we totally enjoyed each one. The Sac Bee had written up this gem recently and this small place with a very small kitchen was struggling to stay ahead of the crowd. After talking to the owner, she had the right frame of mind - keep the restaurant food the priority and put out good food - she would post a temporary closed sign to maintain the pressure off the kitchen that only had four burners, the chef behind the wall was totally amazing. We started with the tea leaf salad - a signature dish of Burma - crunchy cabbage, slivered carrots, cashew and pumpkin seeds, and other secret ingredients topped with a velvety peanut oil dressing -a salad like no other. Next came our two soups - Hot Pepper Soup and Tom Khaa Kai Soup - Both very good, I especially loved the Hot Pepper Soup, the broth and ingredients marry very well together and started us off on a flavorful journey. The Tom Khaa Kai soup was similiar to the Thai version of the soup - but it tasted just as good. We also ordered some roti (naan like?), Our restauranting friend said it was the "Best she every had!". We had four more dishes - Fish Curry, Burmese Garlic Shrimp, Mee-Go-Rang (a noodle dish), and Basmati rice. We ended our meal with two dessert - warm tapioca and strawberry and mango mochi ice cream balls. read more
