(4/10/2015) We were celebrating two family birthdays at once at Green Leaf, it was the organizer's fave Asian restaurant in the area. We all already know Baltimore metro has abysmal Chinese food representation, out in the far flung 'burbs, it's even worse than you think. While the sign may say "Japanese," it's def not; it's a Chinese restaurant cashing in on a trifecta of jaded trends: sushi/Thai/spa cuisine. I'm not even going to talk about authenticity. Having read the menu beforehand and the reviews, decided to stick with the sushi. Rolls were thick, loose, heavily sauced, mostly favored non-sushi eaters with a preponderance of deep-fried items in the maki (fried chicken in a roll, anyone?) and of the maki itself. Nigiri were mostly fresh, but enormous pieces, twice the appropriate 2-bite size. I know it's generous, but it's just not right. The Asian-style dishes were mostly fusion or just straight up fancified carryout (Fried Rice, Honey Sesame Chicken). Honey Sesame Chicken was large deep-fried cubes of rather dry breast meat (as it usually is with white meat) in a sticky sauce flavored mostly with rice vinegar and soy. Pad Thai was boring but a very large portion, noodles stuck together and not well-seasoned. Fusion "spa cuisine" pastas did have plenty of fresh, bright green vegetables. They were very nice and accommodated our large party well, even made room for a surprise visitor, let us bring a cake, and sang happy birthday; all on a packed Friday night. It gets crazy busy, but I suspect mostly because there's not much competition around in these here parts. read more

A little hidden gem in, of all places, a strip mall in Hunt Valley. I swear, I'm going to start eating at strip mall restaurants exclusively from now on. Hubs and I shared a spicy tuna sushi plate - his entree was Singapore noodles and I chose a "Green Leaf Pasta" selection, which appeared to be spinach noodles, shrimp, bok choy and a really light oyster-style sauce. The sushi is everything they say it is here. Generously sized, fresh, and mouth-watering. I wish we had gotten more of it, and we probably will the next time we visit. I can't speak for Hubs and his noodles (he says they were REALLY good), but I CAN vouch for the "Green Leaf Pasta" dish - and I'll say this about it - it was absolutely DELICIOUS. Very generous with the bok choy and shrimp, and the sauce was the perfect touch - not too light, not too heavy. Many may complain that it's flavorless, but for me it was just the right amount. Absolutely no complaints here. I'd definitely order this again with no hesitation. Service was pleasant and unhurried. It was dead when we came in (Saturday afternoon at around 4pm), but was starting to get packed when we left. It's clear there's a lot of regulars here, too, as some of them were greeted by name. This spot came up when I searched "Thai food" and it was different from my experiences at other Thai restaurants. For starters they only had 3-5 Thai items on the menu, and we were less than thrilled with our servers performance. I will say however for what seems to be a family owned restaurant they are not that bad. The portion sizes were a little small for the price but the food did taste good!! Not sure if I'll be back here in the future as it doesn't really stand out in any way from your local take out place. read more

Prices were average and the sushi was good. Quality sushi establishment in the area. BYOB too! Wish I would have known. Next time I'll definitely bring some wine! This is my favorite spot for sushi and Japanese in the Baltimore area. Lunch, dinner, dates, celebrations...I've been coming here for many years for all kinds of occasions, and it suits each one. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior. Located in a strip mall in Hunt Valley, Greenleaf is a hidden gem. The menu is extensive. The fried calamari remains the standard by which I judge all other calamari plates. The soups and salads are not just an afterthought, and in many cases are actually filling enough to serve as your main plate. The sushi rolls are the stars of the show here, though. There are tons of varieties to choose from, including everything from standard $5 California rolls to extravagant $15+ house specialties, and all are incredibly fresh and filling. It's hard to pick, but with this many good options, you'll always have a reason to come back. The BYOB option means you can have your choice of beverage pairing to make the process of trying them all even better. Arguably the best part about Greenleaf is the service. The staff is helpful, patient, and so kind to their customers, regardless of how busy it is. The owners, Charlie and Peggy, make it a point to interact with their guests and make you feel welcome. I have no hesitation recommending Greenleaf to anyone in the Baltimore area looking for high quality Asian food with top notch service. read more

As someone with a food allergy, I'm sometimes reluctant about getting Asian food. Luckily, I found Green Leaf here in the Baltimore suburbs while traveling for work. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu items and ingredients, and provided me gluten free soy sauce with my meal. Plenty of options for me on the menu and both the sushi and pad Thai that we got were really delicious. read more

The carrot-ginger dressing is quite good. However, the salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, some grated carrot and nothing else. There were an alright number of specialty rolls. The penthouse roll was interesting because it had cilantro in it with some lime on top of the tuna. A combination that I wouldn't have thought of, but ended up being quite a good roll. Esther roll was good too. Rainbow roll is standard, the salmon was good, the tuna was slightly fishy. And the crunchy roll was my least favorite. I found it to be a little bland and somehow weirdly sweet. We would go back, though it's not one of those places that you disown all other sushi restaurants for. This place is a decent choice for Asian food near Hunt Valley. Thought it advertises itself as offering both Japanese and Thai food, I would say that its menu predominantly focuses on Japanese fare. Aside from curry and pad thai, you will be hard-pressed to find any Thai options. I ordered the tempura udon and thought that it was pretty tasty. My brother's basil chicken had good flavor at first, but after a few bites was really salty. My friend's pad thai was relatively flavorless... Everyone else seemed to be ordering the sushi, seems like that's what you're supposed to get. The server was friendly, but the food came out slow. Granted, it was a busy Sunday evening. ABSOLUTELY ZERO STARS! FOOD IS HORRIBLE. I order take out. The owner was rushing me to get my order. As a first time guest I don't think that I'd appropriate. Anyways.... I get the shrimp and broccoli since when does shrimp and broccoli come with a white sauce. Rice is brick hard I don't see how that was ever steamed. I asked for a lunch special and she clearly gave me a dinner portion with only 4 shrimp. I wouldn't recommend on a bad day! I say choose another don't waste your time. My mom loves Thai and I love sushi so when we found this place it seemed like a good mix of both of our loves. The Thai food.. amazing. The sushi... yuck and I eat sushi a LOT. I literally could not eat the rolls . The Nigiri sushi was very so so and way too much rice under it. The green salad tasted like lemons and was not good, had two bites (they did take this off the bill without me asking when she saw I took two bites). So, my advice, go there and eat the Thai food but skip the sushi. I have to put this in context that I am not a whiner and RARELY send anything back but I also know my sushi and would never order it again if I ever went back to Green Leaf read more

I was looking for a good Thai restaurant in the surrounding area of Baltimore, but not necessarily in Baltimore. At first, using Yelp of course, I found a place in Mt. Vernon, Baltimore that had a high-star rating. After reading the reviews, I realized it was more of a carryout place than a restaurant having no bathrooms and a small seating area. I came across Green Leaf, which wasn't strictly Thai, but more of an Asian Fusion restaurant that served sushi and sashimi in addition to Thai and Japanese. I thought, "Great! The best of all the Asian Cuisine, except Chinese, which you can get anywhere." I talked my mother into accompanying me which was not an easy tasks considering she is not adventurous when it comes to ethic food other than American, Italian, or Chinese. She says that she doesn't like anything else, but she never tries anything else so how would she know? I asked her to step-out of her comfort zone and try something new, which she reluctantly agreed to do. We arrived at 4:00 PM on Sunday, which is when they open on Sundays. I think this is a little late on Sundays and is unfortunate not being open for lunch on Sundays, hence the 4-stars, not 5. The place is not very big, but it's spotless. I wasn't inspired by the decor as being Asian, Thai, or Japanese, but didn't really bother me. I was more concerned about the food presentation, taste, and service. We were seated and handed menus, including a paper menu for checking-off sushi/sashimi items. They had a full menu, a sushi/sashimi menu with pictures and descriptions, and a paper sushi/sashimi check-off menu. We were brought water immediately. The server checked with us a couple of times to see if we completed the paper menu, but we were taking our time perusing the menu since we had never been there. There were so many good choices to choose from, it was hard to decide what to pick. I did choose the Eel and Avocado Sushi Roll as an Appetizer. I talked my mother into trying it after showing her how to mix the wasabi and soy sauce to dip the sushi into. Amazingly, she liked it. That's so far out of her realm of eating that I was shocked! She ordered the Udon Noodles with Vegetables and Chicken. I ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken. The food was delicious and huge portions. The server refilled my Iced Tea before the glass was even half empty and checked on us several times to ensure that everything was okay or if we needed anything else. My mother got the Japanese Green Tea and I got an Iced Tea. I was disappointed that they didn't have Shrimp Pad Thai, my favorite Thai dish or the Thai Tea, which I found unusual for a supposedly Thai Restaurant. But with those exceptions, I will definitely be going back. The bill was very reasonably priced, too. I took home half of my meal because it was so filling. I be enjoying it tomorrow for lunch. I would highly recommend going to Green Leaf for your Japanese, Thai, or Asian Fusion food fix. You won't be disappointed. read more

I've had some good meals at Green Leaf but my last visit was a disappointment. As usual, service was prompt and friendly. However, with Covid still around I don't understand why why they were seating parties right next to each other rather than spread them out a bit which could have easily been done when we were there for a late lunch. I had the vegetable tempura which was a bit oily and lacked flavor. Also, when I have had tempura at other restaurants it was usually served with grated daikon to add to the dipping sauce, but not here. All in all, meal was OK but not great. read more

They were busy tonight but service was way too slow. From order to food on table was over 40 min and no one stopped by to check on us. I order teriyaki filet mignon. Sadly, it was not a filet. At best it was a chewy dried up rib eye, cut thin, and soaked in teriyaki sauce. Not impressed. Wife had pineapple shrimp. It was okay. Nothing to write home about. Would return? Doubtful. Not for the price of what we had. Thought we would try something local and different while doing some shopping in Maryland. We never have an issue with getting our order in a timely manner no matter how busy they are. Our rolls have always been fresh, generous portions and nice presentation. Green Leaf has the BEST sushi in the Baltimore area, hands down. The prices are a bit higher than other sushi joints around but you really do get what you pay for! I had the salmon rice bowl recently, the salmon was not fresh at all, it tasted very fishy. Not only that, the rice was hard and gross, plus it was not the typical short grain sushi rice, it was jasmine rice. I've been to many sushi restaurants, I really don't recommend eating their raw seafood here. I'm giving them an extra star for the service, portion size was also good but that doesn't really matter if the food doesn't taste good. read more

First time trying this place. Takeout only because of pandemic. Dumplings are chicken instead of pork, but pretty good. Chicken and broccoli OK. String bean pancakes better then they sound. Had lunch with my wife and another couple. Chicken dumplings were awesome, very tender and flavorful although they were green. My entrée was oven roasted cod (lightly seasoned to perfection) topped with chargrilled crabmeat. A very light white wine sauce accompanied it. Small side of traditional white rice came with the dishes well. Service was swift and timely even met one of the owners. Parking is very tight in the first row outside the restaurant park in the second or third row. Prices are very moderate read more

What a great place! We walked in at 5 and the place was completely empty. It filled up quickly over the next hour. We ordered some amazing rolls!! ...... Crunchy Roll (Lump Crab, avocado, shrimp, fish roe & tempura flake with special seaweed outside) Pretty In Red (Lump Crab, avocado, tempura flakes & tuna outside with wasabe sauce) Tokyo Roll (Spicy tuna inside, yellow tail, tuna, & salmon Outside with wasabe sauce) All of these rolls were wonderful and super fresh! I will order all three again next time. They don't have a kids menu, so we ordered the tempura appetizer for our daughter. It was HUGE and delish! I usually force the child to eat all her vegies, but this time, she had to protect her tempura green beans from her parents. :-) All in all, a great place to eat! This place is ok. I got really excited after reading other Yelp reviews and seeing some of the pictures posted; but unfortunately my experience didn't live up to the expectations. The rolls are rather small for the most part and aren't that cheap. Most standard maki rolls are over $6.00, while specialty rolls are at least $10. I ordered a California roll, spicy tuna roll, Philadelphia roll, lump crab and avocado roll and the teriyaki salmon roll. Each roll, while still pretty fresh, just lacked that extra something. For example the teriyaki salmon roll features a small piece of cooked salmon with sauce on top. Adding panko or some kind vegetable could have made it a bit more exciting and a nice contrast of texture. The lump crab and avocado roll did indeed have lump crab as advertised, but was just bland and had a thinnest slice of avocado. Some old bay or spicy oil definitely could have made this roll better. Obviously I am not a sushi master but I just really expect to have a more interesting sushi meal when I pay almost $50 for 5 rolls. Don't get me wrong this place is still decent, but it just wasn't for me. On a side note I didn't try any of the 'non-sushi' dishes so I can't comment on those; however, I would be curious to try them. read more

Excellent sushi specials here. The penthouse roll is unique and features lime slivers that give it a flavor profile that will surprise and satisfy. The crunchy roll is another winner that deviates from the sushi norms, great if you enjoy crab. In Seattle, teriyaki is found all over the place. Like coffee joints, teriyaki places are a dime a dozen. I haven't had teriyaki since leaving Seattle and was hankering after some, hence a stop at Green Leaf. They have a reasonably priced teriyaki chicken bento lunch. About $9, comes with a very silky miso soup, salad with a Yelp-orange colored gingery dressing. Soup and salad were good! The chicken itself was slightly overcooked and dry, but it was a whole boneless breast. The rice wasn't the type of rice I'm used to, either; it seemed to be a long-grain variety. Not too bad so far, but since I'd heard raves about their sushi, I got a couple of rolls to go. The sushi was very tasty. I had a spider roll with the biggest spider in it ever! The rice was delicately flavored and of the right kind (sticky!) for sushi. Very conveniently located near the Giant, lots of parking at the restaurant's end of the lot. read more

This is a hole in the wall place so if you're not looking for it, you would never know that it is there. My biggest complaint is that the rolls are a little small and prices are high, but on the other hand the sushi is so good I don't really care. I just make this more of a special occasion place. My favorite thing in the whole world is the bar salad. It's not on the menu. I used to go there so much that they would make it for me. I fell in love and started asking for it. It is a seaweed salad with crab mix on top and spicy mayo with crunchies. It's so simple but so good. Not only do they have sushi but they have really great fusion dishes. I enjoy the California fruit roll which I would suggest if you like a little sweet in your food. Those are my two favorites but you can't go wrong with anything here. Traveling along the I-83 corridor, found this restaurant on yelp. We visited at 9pm on a Saturday night and the place was packed. Still, they found us a table within 5 minutes. We ordered the Edamame, Miso soup, Singapore noodles, and two Rolls. Nothing out of the ordinary, but good food and would stop here again if I was in the area. I will mention, however, the waiter service was extraordinary. Very professional - wouldn't "allow" me to move my plates out of the way as more food came out and insisted they do it for me. We have been going to Greenleaf almost every week (sometimes more) for the past 6-7 years. The food is excellent and consistent. Another great things is that it's BYOB...bring your favorite beverage for sushi/Asian food...Saki, wine, beer! There is a nice liquor store in the mall (Shawan Liquors) that has everything you need..tell them you are taking your selection to Greenleaf and they will give you a 10% discount. The customer service and the staff is second to none! The owners ONLY concern are that you are very happy with your meal and experience. The sushi is the best we have had in Maryland, If you want something that's not on the menu, they will do their best to accommodate your needs. Don't be fooled by the fact that its in a strip mall. I suggest that you make a reservation from Thursday-Saturday nights as it's extremely popular and gets crowded. Well worth the wait! read more

I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box lunch special and it was literally a boiled chicken breast with some sauced drizzled on top sitting on some raw cabbage. How is this a Japanese restaurant if you don't even know how to make basic chicken teriyaki properly?! I do like their sushi, however their staff has very passive aggressive and extremely rude way of asking for tips during the pick up and pay process. For example, today the staff held my credit card in one hand and put down the bill on the table with the other and leaned very closely to me to asking me to sign the bill. I wanted to take my card before signing, but he held it even further. In the beginning, I thought maybe I am just being sensitive, but it's clear that it's their culture. There is a middle aged white woman and also a middle aged asian man who do that the most. Finally, I realized it's not in my head today. I cringe everytime I pick up food at Green Leaf. There are unfortunately few good restaurants around here and we end up getting food from there. Funny thing is I always leave tip when I pick up food. This is because most of the time people did not tip me when I used to work as a cashier ( which was a bummer given my mim wage). Anyways, I will avoid this place from now on. read more

I've been here two years in a row on the weekend after Thanksgiving. Nothing like celebrating America with a little sushi! The menu is expansive: appetizers, salads, special sushi rolls, noodles, teriyaki...this really IS the definition of Pan-Asian cuisine. As a result, there may be a few things that aren't quite as authentic, but when your sushi comes from a strip mall outside Baltimore, you adjust your expectations...and Green Leaf surpasses them. Standouts, from this non-fish eater: Pan-seared chicken dumplings Pickled radish roll Vegetable tempura Fried Banana w/ ice cream Some of my family ordered themselves up a sushi feast, which came out on long wooden boards with plenty of wasabi and ginger. Being originally from the Northern VA area, and having frequented many of the popular sushi establishments in NoVA and D.C., where the competition can be pretty fierce, I can confidently say that Green Leaf would definitely be able to hold their own. Over the years, I've found that after having been open for about a year, new sushi restaurants would tend to decrease the size of their sushi, but maintain their expensive prices, $10 for non-specialty sushi. The size of specialty rolls seemed to remain the same, but the prices were always well in the high teens! Before you know it, you've already spent $60 for one person, on sushi alone. At Green Leaf, which quickly became our designated date-night spot for the past two years, we couldn't be anymore impressed and pleased with the quality and portion size of their sushi rolls and entrees, and with the tremendous service that we continually receive every time we visit. Although the entire service staff is amazing, extremely attentive, and friendly, Blanca quickly became our favorite. Don't be surprised if you suddenly find yourself as a Green Leaf "regular."
