You might squint at the logo and look around the shop, and wonder if this is some subtle Starbucks rebranding effort. But under the hood, this is anything but: very good hot coffee and excellent cold brew, with decent prices for NYC. I haven't tried the aero press since I'm a man of simple coffee tastes, but I've heard good things. And let me put in a plug for the whole wheat donut -- the guy working one day told me Gregory's makes their own every day at an uptown location, and it shows. I came to Gregory's Coffee right before I came back home, I felt like Gregory's was everywhere and I had to try it before I left New York. To me, Gregory's in New York was like a Starbucks in Virginia so I had to try it. I was so not disappointed. They were better than Starbucks. I came here for a cappuccino the other morning around 7am. There were only 2 people ahead of me and I only waited a minute to order. I also picked up a yogurt with granola while waiting. The cappuccino was ready in 2 minutes and I added some sugar at the station where you pick up your drinks. The cappuccino was delicious, perfectly frothy. Service is fast. Used to be friendlier, but efficiency is good too. Coffee is consistent but don't order the pastries. I find the coffee pretty good. The hot coffee and espresso are better and more consistently good than the cold brew. Do not get the pastries or food there. Consistently overpriced and poorly done. Muffins tend to be overcooked, burnt and flavorless. I specifically asked about what looked like a burnt muffin, and was told that it's just the chocolate making it dark. So I ordered it...and, well, I was right - inedible, burnt and overdone muffin. Which has been par for the course with any of the food I've purchased from there. read more

Very good coffee, and in my opinion, the best on the block. The prices aren't superb, but the quality is very good. Great first impression! Walked in just a day after they opened for business and was pleasantly surprised to find such a cool little coffee joint on a bustling section of Broadway. Lots of baked goods, and I am always impressed by a coffee menu that separately lists a cortado and a macchiato, all espresso pulls are doubles, and they use Aeropress for their pour-overs too! French press is also an option. Inside you will find a nice escape from the tourists to find what feels like a local coffeehouse. Let's hope it stays that way! Why is a coffee shop's main photo a donut? Because that's how mediocre their coffee is. Gregorys is an ever growing chain in Downtown Manhattan that offers better than Starbucks coffee in the same price range (or perhaps a bit more expensive). Aeropress is apparently their thing though I guess they pick and choose who to inform about such interesting coffee ideas since they have not once even mentioned an aeropress to me, and I have been here too many times to count. It is conveniently located next to the Bowling Green bull I love to observe being molested by tourists. I like to sip my overpriced iced coffee (that isn't very good here, but their espresso based drinks are a MUCH better alternative) while watching tourists passive aggressively fight to snap pictures of the bull's balls. Not quite sure what they do with these pictures once they are home, but it makes for interesting people watching from the window of this Gregorys. They have a ridiculous amount of pastries, so much so that it's often unappetizing to look at all that grease behind the window, and it eventually deters me from actually purchasing one, even if I'm craving something sweet. I did get a wheat donut one morning (because in my head this was a "healthier" alternative than a regular one) and I was unimpressed- it tasted stale which shouldn't be the case if it's still morning. Guess that was a donut that didn't sell in their "Half-off pastries after 5PM" deal. I will probably visit this Gregorys again because if you're in this area what's a better alternative for coffee? This is not your typical Starbucks or dunkin donuts. This is high quality coffee for people that really appreciate a good cup of coffee. I'm talking about good coffee that doesn't need to be masked with 5 teaspoons of sugar and 2 ounces of caramel sauce. My preference is the single origin coffees that are made by French press or aeropress. The coffee is a bit pricey but you have to expect that in the FiDi.
