What a great place!! With complimentary valet parking in the rear.... my son and I were seated right away! Patricia, our waitress, was completely attentive. Recommended two outstanding burgers. I can sum this place up very easily for everyone. Everyday Applebee's like food with fancy Brooklyn Hipster menu descriptions. Overpriced for what you are receiving. The service was also lacking. If you advertise over 100 different beers, when you ask for a recommendation from your server, she shouldn't respond, "I don't know. I don't like beer". There are plenty of other places in the area that serve better food and have a more knowledgeable staff. Seek out those places. You'll thank me. read more

Business lunches, Social groups, date nights it's great for all occassions. Food is great. Cocktails great. Nice wait staff ... although we have yet to sit indoors we always enjoy the patio. Poor bartenders have to gallop all the way through the diners to the resteraunt to get our food is a bit disconcerting, but she always manages to juggle the patrons at the bar, the waitresses at the well, and the people waiting for food. I have been coming here for years. It went by a different name not so long ago . . . but the management is the same and the quality and dedication is the same. It has grown from a tiny single unit in a commercial building to now taking up three units and a gigantic courtyard and outer building, and for good reason. The food is good, the wait staff is attentive and friendly, they have a great selection of drinks (including a number only served here). One of my favorite things is how they do "regular" foods with a twist. Instead of chicken wings, they have pork "wings'. It is, IMHO, the best appetizer in the greater Daytona beach area. They have done pot pie, but using turkey and bourbon. They have done mac 'n cheese, but using ham and Gouda. The desserts are always great. The atmostphere is eclectic, but not trying too hard to be. The outside seating area (which is under a big tiki roof) is fantastic. The only downside for some would be the fact that, because of extremely limited parking real estate in that part of town, you either have to find a spot on the street or use valet parking. However I find that a large percentage of nice restaurants have valet parking as well, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. They have one section which is used as an overflow during busy times, but which otherwise is used for private groups and meetings. It is a gorgeous room, reminicient of walking down into the cellar of a winery. It has a wooden barrel ceiling, x-shelves with wine bottles, but hidden connections to bring down a screen to do a business presentation. Speaking of which, this is a place you can dress to the nines, or show up in shorts and a t-shirt. It is casual but elegant. read more

I've tried this restaurant three times now. The menu is vast and varied. It's why I keep trying and may actually yet again return despite mediocre food each time. Why do I return? First, I'm an optimist who loves outdoor, shaded seating. So tiki room, outdoor patio seating for me all three times. Nice sized area with ceiling fans, adequate lighting and a full bar if that speaks to you. Servers have been fantastic each time. Competent, efficient and keep my water and drink glasses full throughout the entire meal and beyond. They have fielded my many questions and special orders, e.g., sauce on the side, deftly. Next, a spotless bathroom--although one significant con is the lack of paper towels, rather a hand dryer which didn't work. Who in their right mind really wants to touch bathroom door handles when you bother to read the clinical literature on what bacteria and viruses persist in public bathroom settings? Why only 2 stars? First let me preface by saying I would have given 3 until this last visit based on good (not great) food, highly varied and unusual menu choices, great service, and pleasant, protected outdoor seating. However this last visit, on a Tuesday early evening was accompanied by live music, performed reasonably well by a young man on acoustic guitar. Doesn't sound so bad?? Well now imagine the first three songs of his first set involve such foul and denigrating language I couldn't help but wonder how quickly I could get my check and get out of there. I'm not a prude and have partied with the best of them but I do enjoy believing Ormond Beach on a quiet Tuesday night is a primarily family-oriented town. I'm not expecting on a non-weekend night, and yes I actually include Thursday night as a weekend might, to be aurally assaulted with bi***, a**, nig***, etc. all skillfully delivered by the restaurant's hired entertainment. It was simply unnecessary, distasteful, and distracting. The food? Predictably forgettable. What have we eaten? Tonight's fare was My Suit and Tie, a flank steak (tough but cooked to correct temperature, we ordered rare) with some fried...stuff ??? on top which added nothing but a slightly nutty, slightly paste-like taste. Accompanying the steak we ordered the portobello fries which were perfectly, lightly bread-crumb fried but were also not worth rating a return visit. Two sauces were presented with the portobello fries, one a bernaise sauce (completely no flavor--how did they manage that?) and the other, an excellent balsamic reduction/glaze which completely overpowered the delicate flavor of the portobello mushroom. We also split the lamb pizza which was arguably very good. The crust was flat and crispy, the lamb tender and flavorful (although almost non-existent), the herbs not overpowering, the mozzarella cheese tender and delicate but the accent cheese which I thought was a feta cheese tasted more like a powerful goat cheese--a total turnoff when I was unfortunate enough to bite into. What else have we eaten there? The fish and hamburger choices have been reasonable. The fries are good. There is a jambalaya-ish dish which was good. **The martinis I've had have been excellent** But the major problem with all of it? The menu is so delightful, so varied, sells the flavors and textures so well I'm always hoping the food will leave me wanting to return and have that, "I've just got to order this again it's so good!" feeling. Alas, not so far but I remain hopeful. read more

I regularly go to Ormond just to dine here. Everything on the menu is fantastic. It does seem like the wait time is longer outside versus inside, but the service is still prompt and friendly. The drinks are excellent and the price for most of the meals is reasonable given the quality and portions. If I have one complaint, and that's being very nitpicky, it's that the portion sizes don't seem uniform and that there are seemingly random times I've gotten more or less. We were heading to beachside to another place and passed Grind Gastropub and both of us said, heck let's try a new place.. What a great decision as this place is so kewl and the food was quite good as well.. The wild artwork of movie stars as Vamps and other "Going the Wild Side" characters is a total hoot. Our server Rachel was a delight, fun, happy, efficient and made us feel so welcomed to the point of asking our names for when we return. We ordered the "Fish Called Wanda"Tacos, made with Mahi Mahi, blackened with a lot of great hot spice and the "One Love" Curried Chicken & Rice entrees. The Blackened Tacos were quite hot with wonderful spices and came with some of the best seasoned fries we have had in a long time. The Curried Chicken dish with vegetables was quite wonderful, especially when you mixed the Asian Hot sauce drizzled on the side of the plate. They have a large selection of draft beers/ales including my favorite Newcastle Brown and we enjoyed both of our choices. There is a wonderful Tiki Bar area in the back and was told they have live music weekend nights and as well as a Cellar and Private Dining room for larger groups that can be reserved. Heard about their flat crust wood fired pizzas, which we definitely want to go back and sample. Prices are moderate and for 2 Pint Beers and 2 Entrees, our bill came to $39 - quite reasonable. We have been awaiting the re-opening of this place impatiently ever since Caffeine closed down for the remodel. I always thought Caffeine was a peculiar name for a bar/restaurant that didn't serve very much in the way of coffee, and I'll confess I find the name "Grind" a little odd as well. What is being ground? Is there a sausage factory in the back? I do not know what was in the owner's mind when he renamed it, but as it's his restaurant, not mine, I suppose it will remain a mystery and also probably none of my business. We arrived around 12:30 on a rainy, grey Saturday in February. Aside from some folks at the bar and a mirthful trio (seriously, I have never heard so much laughter) near the window, we were the only patrons in the place. But as they had only opened for the day a half an hour prior, and considering the dreary weather, I think that is understandable. The waitress/bartender came to take our drink orders and although I know this will sound like a complaint, I don't mean it with any unkindness or mean-spiritedness behind it. She had a perfectly lovely personality and was both friendly and very accommodating. However, I know there are going to be some glitches when the person tending the bar doesn't even know what a 'snakebite' is. My companion explained to her that is was a combination of a lager and a cider, and thank god he did, because she thought it was something mixed with fireball whiskey. I was excited to come to a tiki bar, so I thought I might order a tiki style drink. I didn't see anything like that listed on their specialty drink menu, so I asked if she could make me a Fogcutter. She had never heard of this, so I looked up the recipe on my phone and showed it to her. She informed me she didn't have all of ingredients for it. I tried again, with something that was maybe more familiar sounding: "A Singapore Sling?" I ventured. Again, no recognition. I decided I would just make it easy and order something off their drink menu, so I went with the "Whole Lotta Love", which seemed to be some sort of cucumber martini made with Hendricks and St. Germaine. "Blueberry, raspberry, or strawberry?" she asked. ...huh...? I must have looked perplexed because she repeated herself. "Do you want a blueberry, raspberry, strawberry mumblemurflething? Or, you can go with the original." She added helpfully. I couldn't quite make out what she was saying, but I was starting to feel like an idiot, so I didn't ask her to repeat herself. At this point I was so confused, because I really just wanted my glorified martini, not all this sweet crap that probably tastes like toxic Jolly Ranchers on steroids. I just went with the "original" - whatever that was. She brought out our drinks, his snakebite and my...mojito...? Ok, whatever. I was hungry and I didn't want to waste any more time on beverages. From the appetizer menu we ordered the 'Running Down A Dream' to share: "Truffle Marinated Portabella Fries lightly breaded in Panko & Parsley & drizzled with a Gorgonzola Fondue & Balsamic Reduction. " and we also split a pizza, The White Room: "Fresh Ricotta, Mozzarella di Buffalo, Parmgiano Reggiano & Basil". During the time we waited for our food, which was really not long at all, 3 more couples and two families showed up. In all the time I'd visited the previous incarnation of this place, I had never seen it so busy. I think that speaks to how happy people are with it now, and I am glad to see it, because I think Grind really has a lot of promise. The decor is mainly the same - although they've replaced most of the SHAG art with pieces by Niagara...but they're both really great artists whose work I love, so am happy either way. They've remodeled some, so it definitely feels roomier, too. I was contemplating the changes when our food arrived at the table and ...wow. The pizza was delicious - a crisp, flavorful crust topped with pillowy oozy cheeses, and plenty to split between two people without leftovers but without leaving us feeling stuffed. The only weird bit is that there was a cardboard disk underneath, exactly like the kind that's underneath the shrink-wrapped pizza you get from the frozen foods section of the grocery store. Not sure what to make of that, and the waitress 's vague replies to our questions did not shed any light on it. The portabella fries were also pretty tasty and an interesting alternative to say, cheese sticks or french fries that you might normally see on an appetizer menu. The gorgonzola fondue was more like a lukewarm salad dressing, but it was still a nice dipping sauce to have on hand. It was not an inexpensive meal, but then again, this is not really standard bar food. I think a lot of thought went into the menu; there are definitely some unique choices that you won't find elsewhere in the area, and that is reflected in the prices. We will be back for certain. Maybe the next time the bartender will have picked up a few tricks! read more

Tried here for the first time... we ordered the Poke nachos which was actually pretty decent but my husband ordered their rendition of a Poke bowl and didn't tell me till he was half way done how horrible it was (because he didn't want to complain but he knew should he have told me I would have). The ahi tasted like it was watered down with dish water and the sushi rice taste like it was cooked in the same water. I've never tasted ahi so bad before and it was unfortunate because it was $17.00. I'm from Hawaii so I know all about Poke bowls and that one was a big disappointment. read more

Kona has been a stapple of going out to eat for me for the last 5 years. It was fantastic! However, they switched their menu about 4 months ago and it's just gone down hill. The service was lazy and we were seated in front of the stage and could barely hear ourselves think. The music is supposed to be a nice atmosphere addtion and ended up being obnoxious. We also waited a half hour for the waitress to get our drinks and then waited an hour and a half for our food to be delivered. The waitress was no where tk be found and didn't update us on why it was taking so long for our food. Like i said it used to be better so i had higher expectations. When we did get our food it was cold and undercooked. We had to ask for hot fries! read more

We LOVE the Grind! Always our go-to place for peanut butter chicken pizza (which is AMAZING - ask for extra peanut butter sauce!) and their brownies a la mode is enough to share 2 or 3 ways for $5!! Staff is usually prompt and always friendly. Sometimes they have live bands outside and/or karaoke inside. We've seen folks gather here from all ages 20s-70s. Inside is sort of a steampunk atmosphere while outside at the Kona Bar is more of a younger type atmosphere! We love this place! Highly recommended! read more

We went to Grind on a Friday evening and it was terrific! The food was better than anything I have had in a long while. I had the skirt steak and fries, it was out of this world! Steak temp was spot on and the drizzle of truffle butter was just perfect. My husband had the bison burger. The sear on the burger was perfection and all the toppings were fresh and delicious as was the BBQ sauce they put on the side. The staff was attentive and friendly. This is not a place to come if your in a rush as the food does not fly out of the kitchen. However, once you taste the quality of what's being served, you won't mind the hang. The place has a great laid back vibe, great staff, amazing food and the creativity and passion the owners have for every detail is apparent from decor to food and drinks. Took the recommendation of a local while traveling in Daytona. It was a spot on recommendation. I had the Lamburger. Cooked perfectly with caramelized onions and goat cheese spread. Unique burger choice. My lunch partner had the Lobster Grilled Cheese. Rich and delicious as well.
