The first sign of a great Mexican restaurant is having warm homemade chips and salsa delivered to your table and they do it with a smile. I have had fish tacos, pollo quesadilla and burrito, and my favorite- the shrimp burrito! Gringo's is a small, local's joint in the same blue building at Zeke's and Pizza Chapel off Norfolk Ave. It's small and intimate inside with a bar with about 5 seats and about 8 or so tables. Staff were incredibly friendly. We had to wait about 10 minutes for the table which wasn't too bad. We browsed the menu while waiting. It's small and doesn't have a ton of options or healthy veggie items, but there were a few things to choose from. In the end - we went with chips and salsa - yum with a small side of white habanero sauce which was very good. I ordered the chicken enchilada and my husband ordered two tacos. His tacos were large in size and you pay per taco with a bunch of options for toppings ands styles so you can easily mix it up and get as many as you want. Food was out quickly and pretty big portions and our waitress was very sweet. Their sweet tea was delicious. Loved the salsa and chips. My enchilada was different than what I expected. Not wrapped and fried but more like baked lasagna on a plate. But good. Huge portion. Would come back again. It is not the best Mexican food, but not the worst. I ordered pork and shrimp tacos. The pork tacos were good. They had some heat but not a lot of flavor. The shrimp tacos were very plain. I ordered them without sour cream, and they only came with shredded lettuce. And in flower tortillas. They have pineapple salsa. It wasn't bad; it was good with the heat of the pork taco. I also ordered guacamole; it was fresh and helped add flavor to the tacos. The restaurant is small and clean, and the service was good, but only a few people were dining. I'm from California & I learned to cook from great genuine Mexican cooks. Gringos is a cute, clean, nicely decorated restaurant , highly recommended by Virginia Beach natives. Salsa was exceptional & chips were thin & crisp, yummy! My Yubi taco was good, not great. Rice was mediocre, black beans were mediocre. Green side salad was mediocre. These items are very cheap to make but important to Mexican food lovers. I'd love for the owner to respond on yelp to me for my recipe for authentic delicious Mexican style rice, how to make a mediocre side salad delicious, just by adding a few cheap ingredients. Offer a good, solid Mexican flan topped with whipped cream and sprinkled cinnamon or nutmeg for dessert. After spicy heavy food, flan made correctly is yummy & soothing to over indulged stomachs. Margarita (skinny) was very good. I love cloudy margaritas, means it's made with real juice. Your restaurant is so highly recommended, so cute & clean, & with so much competition it'd be in your best interest to accept my advice. My shrimp tacos arrived cold and had the flavor and texture of slightly damp cardboard. I didn't even know shrimp could achieve that level of bland disappointment. My boyfriend's burrito also came out cold, which really made us wonder if the kitchen's cooking strategy is just "room temperature and hope for the best." But the real culinary adventure was my daughter's cheese quesadilla. Somehow it tasted like chicken and cheese that had both seen better days... possibly several days ago. A mystery flavor experience no one asked for. And not to mention the service. The staff seemed far more focused on their own social hour than remembering my very simple drink order, which apparently required several reminders. Two years ago this place was phenomenal! I only give it one star now because nothing was fresh. Mojito, pineapple salsa, Guacamole was not made fresh and it wasn't good. The food here is amazing! The orange chicken taco (pictured on the left) was my favorite of the two I ordered! It was so full of flavor and the chicken had a pleasant spice to it. I don't like my food too spicy (I still want to taste it after all ), and this was the right amount of heat. I was a little underwhelmed by the pollo asado after eating the orange chicken taco first. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't as flavorful in my opinion. The service was good. It was just enough so we knew we were being taken care of without being intrusive. It was a freaking oven in there and we had to ask for our queso and it took 45 minutes to get our food. Typically a Mexican place takes about 10 minutes to bring out your food. I'm going to miss this place when I head back to Maryland. It was the best tacos I've had in a while. It's located behind the Boardwalk (I'd actually recommend getting a car) on Norfolk Ave. they have a free parking lot at the back of the restaurant which has ample space. We ordered the Baja dish and shrimp tacos and the street pork tacos. All of which added to a very affordable $24 for 4 very filling tacos. We were told the average serving recommendation is 2-3 tacos and we absolutely agree. They even have huge burritos with 12" tortillas which I hope I'll try one day. The fish tacos are indeed amazing BUT I'd also recommend the Baja shrimp tacos which I'm still drooling about thinking! They're so freaking good. The pork street tacos had perfect ratio of crispy and fatty pieces of pork that just hit right. Even the salsa and chips were good. In fact I'm pretty sure everything on this menu is stellar. Take this Yelp review with a big ass grain of salt. It was a perfectly sunny Saturday in late July. My amazing wife and I had spent the entire day on the beach getting shredded on White Claws. We practically stumbled into this place completed wasted from a day of fun in the sun. I would have eaten just about anything put in front of me. We didn't want to wait 2+ hours to try and eat on the boardwalk so we made our way to this little spot. Get to it Tony, how was the damn food!? It was good but not great. I think the problem is easily fixed. Remember order of operations in grade school? So here is what you do. Swap the flour tortilla for corn. Then, order of operations: cabbage medley, then the fish, then the squiggle of crema and sprinkle a little onion and tomato if you insist. Don't put red salsa on it. Put Pico de Gallo if you must or let the fish do most of the talking. My $0.02 Like I said above, grain of salt Gringo's Taqueria. You make your fish tacos better than most! read more

The restaurant itself of very small- maybe about 5 tables so I can imagine it gets crowded very quick. The tacos are a la carte but you can order a side of rice and beans for a set price. I ordered the shrimp and fish tacos which were really good. The chipotle sauce they used really took the tacos over the edge and gave it tons of flavor. The service was great. My friends and I went here after being told how good their fish tacos are. From sitting down to leaving the service was over all terrific and we did not have to wait long for our fish tacos. From the first bite the fish taco was amazing my only complaint would be the shape of the fish made for uneven biting portions but other than that it was delicious, especially with a little dollop of guacamole on the side. This place appears to be a local favorite. The restaurant is small and and parking can be a bit rough during peak hours. What I love about this place is that you can order items a la carte. You can try one of each taco etc to create your own meal. Family owned and operated so there is true passion in presentation and preparation. Our waitress was amazing and knowledgeable of all the menu items. One the most popular items here is the fish taco. A lightly battered filet is topped with a delicious creamy sauce that is sublime when topped with just a touch of their delicious salsa. Over all a great place to dine BUT I do wish they were a little heavier with the seasoning. Margaritas at gringos are powerful and tasty. Starting off great is the Chips and Roasted Tomato Salsa that was just the right balance of heat and freshness. The portion size of the chips and salsa was completely balanced. Excellent start, made better when we ordered the Chile Macho and more chips. Oh My God! If you are a salsa/sauce lover with your chips, look no further. I think this is one of the best dips I have ever had with chips. What makes me sad faced is the price though. I could easily go bankrupt buying loads of this for home. After the chips, we settled down with our entrees. The waitress was completely attentive and was amazing. I got the Carne Asasa Burrito and my wife got the Tuna Steak and Mushroom Taco. Both were loaded! Don't let the burrito fool you. It may not look big, but it is loaded and packed with the topping you choose. No frills, but loaded with flavor. My wife ordered 1 Taco, and I almost encouraged her to get 2-3. Glad she only got one, her taco and plate were almost bigger than my burrito. Unreal the amount of food and flavor packed in our meals. The best yet, it was reasonably prices for 2 people. Our food was $25 and could easily value more than what we paid for how good it was. Again, easily the best dip in Virginia.
