Grub Hut is truly one of those hidden jems that you MUST visit! The Zagat rating is truly justified. Cute, small and kind of kitchy - totally fits the menus personality. Filled with LOTS of delicious options - Mexican and BBQ. They're "famous" for their BBQ ribs and you can get some really great options. The best are the Brontosaurus beef ribs. MUST try it with the house BBQ sauce. Also love the BBQ Brisket sandwich. All the sides are fantastic as well - especially loved the plantains and Linda's beans. Not everyone travels to Manville or through there, but if you are traveling along Route 22 or 287, it's ABSOLUTELY worth a bit of detour. I drove past this place a hundred times, and finally tried it out the other day. It will now be on my short list of favorite restaurants. The bbq was delicious, and the mexican food was fresh and full of flavor. The mexican part of the menu used a lot of the slow cooked meats from the bbq menu. Its a BYOB, which keeps the costs down. The dining room is small so get there early or make a reservation(they take reservations for party's of 6 or more). The service was quick, almost too quick. Since the dining room is small, the waitress had no problem keeping up with the orders so things came out pretty quick. The portions are big, but not too big. I had the fried rib appy which was outstanding. I shared the chicken taquito dinner with someone, and ordered a burrito with mole sauce that was delicious. I can't wait to go again! read more

Amazing bbq and mexican food. I had the bbq brisket sandwich and it was amazing. It melted in your mouth. The service was great!!! Our waitress was always checking in and making sure we were ok. The mexican food was also amazing. My girlfriend order the chicken enchiladas and she said they were just like her mom makes. I was initially wary of this place due to the odd mix of Mexican and BBQ (though not quite as odd as the Mexican/Sushi place they have in Newark). The chips and salsa were good. For the taste of the food, they get 3.5 stars but everything else quite frankly ruins that, I would really give 2.5 stars. Went there yesterday with my bf, and at the end of it, we were both sorta like "that wasn't worth $50". So on the food, like I said the taste is pretty good. We split the fried ribs appetizer, I got a side salad, the bf got the brisket tacos and I got the carolina burger medium well, he got a root beer, I got the lemonade which tasted extremely watered down. My burger was cooked medium rare. I sent it back and received a well done burger the second time. I was quite tempted to send it back again and tell them I no longer wanted my entree and to remove it from my bill. I've worked in food service so I kind of half expected them to be assholes and burn it on purpose, but c'mon...you're a bbq joint. You should be able to do a medium well burger. But I kept it, ate it at home (because I was over the situation, and the service which I'll get to soon and was just ready to leave by that point) and it tasted good. The pulled pork was better than the burger patty. The fries were okay and the creamed spinach I did not enjoy. Now the service. They might as well have hired a turtle that talks to wait on us. Our server checked on us literally 30 seconds after our entrees came out, we hadn't even touched them yet. When I realized my burger was under-cooked I had to get the attention of another server because ours was nowhere to be found. About 10min later our server reappears, asking if everything was okay. She seemed totally unaware of the situation of me returning my entree. Either she didn't notice that my entree was gone, or she noticed but didn't care to address it, or she was aware of the situation but still didn't care to address it. After waiting and waiting and more waiting (and telling my bf go ahead and finish your entree I'm just going to get mine to go) the other server who was handling the situation brings me a pulled chicken sandwich by mistake (luckily I checked it). When I asked the bf how much the bill was we were both like "uhh okay, wasn't expecting it to be that much". I much rather go somewhere else, spend maybe $10 more and get the same quality of food, some booze with my food and better service. If we do go eat their food again, it'll def be takeout. read more

The ribs are amazing and brussel sprouts on the combo platter were great. The pulled pork was tasty but I wasn't a huge fan of the sauce, not bad just not my style. My wife and I just ate at the Grub Hut tonight for the first time, and it was well worth the drive from Princeton. Although the price is a bit out of our league, it would be well worth it for anyone who can easily swing $20 a person. In our case, we used a deeply discounted Restaurant.com certificate. While you wait for your food, they bring you a basket of fresh tortilla chips and some serious salsa. Speaking as a Californian who lived in East LA for 4 years, I can say that it was some of the best salsa I have ever had, perfectly hot and creamy. We ordered the "Big Bite" which is a meal for two and comes with a quarter of a barbecued chicken (in some of the best BBQ sauce I have ever tasted), four beef ribs, a pile of delicious brisket, two tacos, two smothered burritos, a quesadilla, and two sides (in our case, corn bread that comes out looking like a small pound cake that my wife loves, and perfectly cooked plantain pieces). The Mexican aspect of the food is good, but everything really centers on the flavor of the barbecued meat. For instance, my pork taco was basically a good Tex-Mex delivery system for mouth-watering pulled pork. The service was just what you want in a restaurant, attentive but not instrusive. At one point, our server asked if we were doing alright with our drinks and I responded, "yeah," not paying attention and thinking she was just checking to see if everything was ok. Noticing that my soda was empty, she replied "Are you sure?" and got me a refill. THAT is good service. Finally, the casual, laid-back atmosphere was very welcoming and we didn't feel rushed even though we arrived with less than an hour before closing. I highly recommend Grub Hut to anyone looking for some great BBQ here in NJ. read more

I've been to this place 5-10 times in the last year and everytime I leave wondering why I went back. I sometimes work in the area so I stop by for lunch as I don't eat out at any fast food restaurants, but I have been here for dinner as well. The food, I'll admit, is slightly above average and tastes semi fresh, however the problem lies in the prices and quantity of the food. Numerous times I have ordered right off their lunch menu to find out I was charged $3-4 more then the listed price. I went in for lunch and ordered a soup and salad combo which clearly states is $6.75 only to find out I was charged over $9. This combo consists of about a cup of soup and a few pieces of lettuce with 3 cherry tomatoes and 2 slices of cucumber. Last time I also noticed I recieved the wrong dressing when I got back to work. If you order a side, such as their rice and beans, you will recieve approximtely 2 tablespoons of rice for about $3.. If you come in for dinner for some of their "BBQ" expect to pay $20-25 per person at this hole in the wall joint and will most likely leave feeling less then satisifed. I was so excited about the positive reviews that I brought several friends with me to dine. But I was mortified and embarrassed by the dining experience. It was the worst dining experience ever! Eating the BBQ chicken was like eating charcoal with BBQ sauce. It was dry, cold, and tough. It tasted like BBQ that had been sitting out, that was reheated and served. The ribs were the same; dry, tough and cold. The tortilla chips were stale, as if it had been sitting out the whole day. The sweet potato fries were soggy, and side dish of beans and rice was portioned for a bird or a toddler. I apologized profusely to everyone I brought with me. You know how anything tastes good when you are hungry? The food was just plain BAD, and we were starving. We will never go back, EVER! read more

Good service can make or break a dining experience. Tonight (a Tuesday) I went to the Grub Hut with my brother and husband. This was our 6th or 7th trip there in about three years so I had been looking forward to it. We were greeted by the young man at the front of the restaurant. The waitress and the waitress-in-training never gave us their names and we were ignored after we received our food. It was not until the end of the meal when some time had passed and I had to approach the cash register to ask for the check and to-go containers. My brother had to get up again to ask for his change. All the while I noticed that all of the other patrons were being attended to. I must say that I am disappointed because the Grub Hut is a place that I have told many, many people about. I would be embarrassed if they received the same treatment based on what seems like the color of their skin. I did not feel bad leaving each of the waitresses $1.00. We handed the bus boy a significantly larger tip because he was on the ball throughout our dining experience. Maybe we will go back, maybe we won't. read more

I am absolutely in love with Grub Hut. In the last month, I've probably eaten here or ordered take out at least three times. Even while writing this review I'm contemplating placing and order for dinner. The glazed spare ribs are fantastic. Don't be afraid to get a little messy dipping them into more of the house BBQ sauce. The sassafras chicken is also high on my list, so when I'm not ready to take on an entire rack of spare ribs I go for the chicken and rib combo. The chicken is always tender and juicy and it just melts in your mouth. I've also fallen in love with the loco fries, which are sweet potato fries with onions and jalapenos. I've tried making my own and they've been pretty good, but I still can't get that same smoky-sweet flavor. I've also had the enchiladas which were just as good, especially with chorizo, but the BBQ is what really shines. read more

Went there tonight on the strength of the Yelp reviews. The food was pretty good (we tried BBQ and Mexican). The service was surly and inattentive, which I could look past given the strength of the food. But what I cannot excuse is that we came out smelling completely like smoke. I've taken a shower and changed my clothes but I can still smell it on me. Clearly, the smoker in the kitchen that makes the BBQ is not adequately ventilated. Frankly, I'm surprised this place even passes the health and fire code. I would not ever go back again for table service -- maybe takeout at most. read more

Worst bbq I have ever had, and I have been eating Tex mex/ bbq for 50 years. ribs were burnt to leather, pulled pork mostly fat and what meat there was partially burnt, chicken dry nearly inedible, steak burrito tough. Takeout order missing pieces, unwilling to make substitutions on combo orders, I remember when it was good, now over priced,smaller portions, and unfriendly staff. All that was good is gone. We ordered the Big Time platter, and an order of their chili to go. I was told 20 min, and they had the order ready in 20 minutes. I asked if the tacos would travel ok on my 20 min drive home, and was told both soft or hard tacos would do fine (not true-soggy hard tacos, but duh, right?). Positives: nice customer service both on the phone and in store. Excellent brisket- tender, juicy, great sauce. Good ground beef (taco filling and in the chili) that was well seasoned, good ribs. Negatives were plentiful and thus the low rating: they gave only one chicken (supposed to be two), chicken was very well smoked so unless you like that in-your-face smoked smell and taste it seemed too deep for me, the medium chili cup I had was 1/4 full of their beans from their rice and beans (seemed to be used to fill the bottom), "burritos" we ordered were chicken and a pulled pork. Both were dry, not flavorful, and other than some cheese topping I don't recall there being anything other than meat rolled in a rather thick tortilla. The veg quesadilla we ordered was gummy but may have been ok straight from the kitchen.Then the complimentary chips and salsa, which were put in a large plastic to-go container were all broken in tiny pieces, and it wasn't from the ride in the car. Overall, decent bbq, but poor interpretation of Mexican, and questionable sales given the missing chicken, extra beans in the chili, and bottom of the bag chips. read more

Obsessed with this place. Order the BRISKET nachos (they have a chorizo kind too but the brisket is bomb). I also always order the Mexican-style brisket tacos which are absolutely phenomenal. Not crazy about their rice and beans though so I always swap out my side of rice and beans for a side of plantains. Oh and the salsa that comes out with chips at the beginning of the meal is literally nectar from heaven itself. Also, best flan I've ever had in my life. Chips and salsa were great. I ordered a chicken fajita which didn't have much flavor in it even with the onions and pepper. What did it for me was the terrible service. It was a slow day with 2 free waiters and they didn't check on us once if our food was ok or drink refills. What makes it worse is that we asked for a box to wrap our food to leave and waiter decides to give us the box and disappear. Another 15 minutes we waited for our check. Terrible service. This place needs Gordon Ramsey! We put our name on the list with the host who looked like he had pajamas on. Then we wait and he comes out calling other peoples names that were there waiting before us which is no problem. Then my girlfriends phone rings and its the host saying our table was ready, guess he was too lazy to come outside where he knew we were waiting. Then we sit at our table for 15 minutes before anyone made any eye contact or to take an order. We get stale chips. Then look forward to getting the guac but hear other tables asking to send them back as they didnt like them, bummer. So we just got the bbq pulled pork and it was just pork with a squirt of bbq sauce. The host did offer desert on the house, but we couldnt wait to get out of there! read more
