If the could somehow figure out the service challenges they have I would move them to a 5 star. Mandatory 18% gratuity so often what you get is random servers and then they forget about you. That said the food is always good and their soup might be the best in clackamas county. Affordable drinks as well. We like to sit in the bar where you get more consistent service if you sit literally on the bar stools. read more

This is my go-to restaurant. I have been a customer since they opened. The service is quick, friendly and pleasing. The atmosphere is modern, casual, welcoming. The menu offers everything from soup and sandwiches to full course meals. The best thing of all is that I can count on the food to be abundant, thoughtfully prepared and outstandingly delicious. The prices are reasonable. My only complaint is that they fill up quickly with customers each day, but even the wait line moves quickly. read more

I have been going to Gubancs for a very long time now and it's always been good food and service. For those of you that keep complaining about the 18% service charge please!!! They are not hiding anything.. there are table tents on every table that say exactly that and some people like to leave a little bit more than the 18%. The food and service are fine. Not as good as they once were, but not terrible. *** WATCH OUT FOR TIPPING SCAM!!! *** Gubancs now charges an 18% "service" charge on all tabs. It doesn't matter if it is one person, two people, or 20 people. It says this in the fine print on the menu, but the staff doesn't mention it. When you get your bill, the 18% is shown there as a service charge (not a "tip"). My husband and I saw that and thought it was a bit misleading. My husband was about to pay in cash (with no additional tip because we do not like being charged automatically - what happened to "to insure prompt service"? And, for the record, we almost always tip between 20% and 30%). I told him that I had seen this scam in other restaurants and that I bet it didn't show up on the credit card bill. So he put the cash back in his wallet and I put my credit card on the table. When we eventually (not particularly fast) got the credit card receipt (and they did give us the original bill to refer to, so kudos to them), sure enough, there was the total (which included the service charge) AND another space for a tip. There was no mention (and the staff did not alert us) that we had already paid the tip. So, let's do the math on this. Let's say that our bill was $50. With the 18% service charge ($9), this is now $59. Then, if you are not paying attention, you tip another 20% ($11.80, but you round up to $12, because you are a nice guy and the math is easier). Remember, you are now tipping 20% not only on the $50 bill, but on the $9 service charge). So you have now paid $71 for your meal. That is a $21 tip. THAT IS A 42% TIP!!! (And, although "fine," the service was definitely not worth 42%.) We are not "spring chickens," but a lot of the patrons are even older than we are. I am betting that most of them don't catch onto this scam. Gubancs has to be aware of this and chooses to continue with the scam. Not cool. Reading other reviews I see that I am not alone in this. I also see that the management doesn't care. So I will make my complaint by posting this review (here and in other places). I will also stop going to Gubancs. I hope the extra $12 you almost got from us was worth it. read more

I've eaten there twice now. The staff is ultra friendly. I love going there just for the service. We started with the buffalo cauliflower. Perfect way to start a meal. I had the ribs with the green sauce. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was not disappointed. The ribs were perfectly cooked and the verde sauce along with the fried corn was exceptional. The bean salad was OK, but I'm not a fan of cold white beans, so that's on me. We saw a piece of carrot cake from the across the room. So, we got one to take home. VERY good. Not too sweet and very moist. We've been to lots of restaurants in our first month in the area. it's nice to see a restaurant that's busy and energetic. We have been coming her for more years than I can count! The happy hour menu has a lot of good choices. The food is always outstanding - even the takeout is perfect. Service is always friendly, quick and correct. We've never had a complaint about the servers. The restaurant has been renovated but has always been rather dark. Love this place! Major comfort food here in a cozy retro style restaurant. They were even playing music from the 1970's when we were there to savor their amazing Friday mushroom soup. Gubancs is an institution, and I used to frequent it decades ago, so Hubs and I stopped in to see how it's holding up. The service was fine. This is obviously a local haunt, and there is definitely a cast of cheers that surrounds the bar, with a friendly bar tender serving up big personalities and the occasional cocktail. We ordered a couple of margs and nachos. Neither were memorable in any way. The very brown spots on the avocado on the nachos made me sad. The building has undergone a recent upgrade, and it was fun to watch football on their large TV. But the room temperature was cold, and the service was not good after we were sat. We waited 20 minutes for someone to offer us a second round, and we finally gave up, but had to wait another 20 minutes for the bill to arrive. read more

The customer service was amazing with lovely accommodation of my family (including 2 kids on the spectrum and a baby)... from when I called on our way and spoke with a gal herself with 4 kids who set the big booth aside to accommodate us, to the bartender gentleman who did a peach drink for my birthday. Everyone was very kind, understanding, and went above and beyond! The food was good, although they should offer the mushroom soup every day (they didn't have any on Saturday!). A macaroni and cheese option would be a good addition to the kids' menu, as well. I loved the mud pie!!! The shortcake was good, too. We will definitely be back. One thing they still need: a changing table. I complained about this 8 years ago with my oldest and continue to need to make do now with my 7-month-old by changing him on the booth, unfortunately. For a family-friendly place, this is a necessity! (Even a small one in the handicap stall since the bathroom is small.) read more

Heard so much about this place, but very disappointing. I ordered the Greek salad and instead of getting a sliced chicken breast, it had about 6 small cubes. The feta was hardly there and the Kalamata olives were chopped into tiny pieces of which were hard to find. The dressing did not have a lot of flavor. You get this for $17...AND... when you get the tab, be careful. The tab on top to sign has the total and a spot to add a tip. The paper underneath shows an 18% gratuity already added to the total. Delicious food. I've lived in Lake Oswego for over 10 years and had never gone here before. Stopped here (March 2024) on a Tuesday and ordered an early dinner. I tried the Salmon Sandwich with potato salad and also had a homemade mushroom and asparagus soup. The soup was rich and full of flavor with a tad of spice. I really enjoyed the food. Everything tasted homemade and good. I would definitely go back. The waitress brought out the wrong soup at first with our order. That was the only mix up. The tip of 18% is already included in your tab. I actually liked that, but it's different than other restaurants so you have to recognize this. The atmosphere was rustic and the restaurant is a little on the darker side with wood decor. We sat up front to get some natural light. I'm interested in coming back sometime on a Friday to try their cream of mushroom soup since most people recommend it. read more

This restaurant demands 18% gratuity added to your bill. They say they need to do this so their employees can make more money. If you feel the need to put more money in your employees pockets then give them a pay raise. I tip based on quality of the service I receive, usually around 25%. I will no longer spend my hard earned dollars at this restaurant!! On top of all this I had crappy service, empty water glasses and our appetizer came out after our main dishes. read more

Gubanc's Pub is locally owned. They deserve a 4-star rating for that fact alone. Add to the equation the super friendly service and comfortable feel of the dining space - and you have a solid 4-star place. It is a bit challenging to classify Gubanc's Pub into any one genre of food. In many respects it is a neighborhood pub - akin to something you'd find anywhere in the U.K. On the other side of the comparison, its a bit more like a mid-west supper club - the kind of place you'd frequent on a Friday evening for the fish special. Is Gubanc's Pub the best place in the area for high-end dining and grub? No, probably not. Very disappointing. This used to be one of my favorite places. I got the tuna melt that was nothing resembling a tuna melt except the bread was toasted..... in a toaster. The tuna was cold and the cheese was not melted. There was so much tuna and some mushed up red stuff that oozed out everywhere. I literally had a large pile of tuna left on my plate. We as well as friends have comment that we will not return. My guess is that they lost a long time chief or something? I am sorry that I did not write a review when we so enjoyed the food and service. But I want the old Gubanc's back! This was the second time that we had been there, we sat at the bar and it was really nice- The staff were very gracious and polite to one another, and to obvious regulars. They were ALL very cognizant of providing good thoughtful communicative service. Maybe it was the yummy Manhattan talking but I told my husband when we got home that that was such an enjoyable experience that there was not one thing that I could be critical of, and that is often not the case. I will say- I'm sure I was overcharged, the happy hour is great, maybe I paid full price? Something went wrong there, but I really liked it- the happy hour menu is a must! It's halibut season and I was told this place had fresh halibut and it was yummy! So I headed over prior to dinner rush. Parking is in the back of the restaurant and it looked pretty adequate. There was no one else in the restaurant except for 2 tables so I was seated immediately and provided with a menu. I wasn't hard to spot for fish and chips and I heard the table next to me talking about how good it was. Setting the bar high! A 4 piece Halibut fish and chips is $18. They also had a 6 piece option. It took approximately 12 minutes for my order to arrive. It was served with tarter sauce and lemon. The batter was a bit heavier than I like but the halibut was definitely fresh and Delicious! The fries were hand-cut and just the right crispy. Couldn't resist their fresh strawberry shortcake for dessert and it was a good size portion. The shortcake was warm and freshly baked and topped with fresh cut strawberries and real whipping cream. Hard to find a place who makes their own shortcake. It was so good! Customer service was great and the place was clean. They even use biodegradable paper straws! I will be back! :-) read more

Mixed review. Salads OK but not great. Had to ask for extra ingredients. They were provided without complaint by a staff person not our waiter. Our waiter was not to be seen. Been twice. Each time my order was wrong. Same waiter each time. As though not listening at time of ordering. My friend loves the place so we go but I would not choose it on my own. In its favor, however, the home made fruit cobbler desserts are very good and very generous in size. I've been reading reviews. I did not know that the tip is already included in the menu price. 18%. ***TERRIBLE SERVICE AND 18% GRATUITY INCLUDED IN MEAL- BE AWARE*** This was my first dining experience at Gubancs and will most likely be my last. The food was decent but was completely overshadowed by the horrible service. I have dined at many establishments throughout the years but never have I ever had such off-putting behavior from a server. The first warning sign was when he introduced himself to the table. He came chomping on a piece of candy. It was so over exaggerated that my friend asked him what he was eating. He said it was a piece of Mexican candy. That was a bit strange because it was so exagerated the way he was eating it. It got worse. He asked me what I was drinking and when I told him, he sneered at me as if I made a bad choice. He did a few other minor strange things as well that left me and my friend just shaking our heads. When it was time to order, I requested the smaller portion of Fish and Chips and he replied with stating it would be the 6 pc fish. I asked about the smaller portion again and he; I think, was trying to joke and state that this would be the 5 1/2 pc fish. At this point, I wasn't really enjoying his behavior so I tried to find the item on the menu myself. He finally grabbed the menu and pointed it out. I confirmed that it would be the 4 pc. As he walked away, he turned to me and said that he didn't speak English. I had enough of his snarky attitude and replied back that he wasn't listening to English either. He was trying to push my buttons and I am not sure why. When the food arrived, he left and my friend wanted another glass of wine but we were a bit hesitant to even ask for anything else as we just didn't want to deal with his attitude. My friend tried asking another employee for a glass of wine and he referred us back to our server. The server brought her wine to her and asked me if I would like another beer. When I said "yes, please", he retorted "Before I cut you off". Huh? I just had one beer prior. This was such a rude and unnecessary comment. After the meal, he came back and asked us if we wanted our food to go. Only, he asked it in Spanish. I don't speak or know much of the Spanish language but my friend was able to answer the question. At this point, I just didn't want to engage with him at all. I didn't really want to tip him but both my friend and I did give him at least a 15% tip. I believe she gave him a 20% tip. I found out later that the meal automatically included an 18% into the meal charge, so essentially I paid a 36% tip on top of the terrible service. We couldn't wait to get out of there. As we were leaving, I saw him go up to a table of four, pull out his lip balm and proceed to cover his lips exaggeratingly in front of the group where I believe one of the patrons commented on it while he continued to cover his lips with the lip balm. I can honestly say I have never had such a strange and odd experience anywhere like what we had here. We have made an annual tradition of dining at Gubanc's on the night before Thanksgiving to enjoy the traditional " Turkey dinner soup" This soup has been a real treat for us but this year the soup was not to the usual flavor and standard of the prior year's soup. It was lacking the cranberry flavor and was a weak broth as compared to the prior year's soup. The service and other parts of our dinner were excellent so please have the cooking staff take another look at the Turkey dinner soup so it can return to the great flavor that it has been over the years. read more
