we wanted to love this place but the food was a a let down. the staff was tops, which went a long way. the music level was great - we could hear each other talk. the crab corn app was good - better without the crackers. the oysters were great. the room was just OK, tall ceilings made it feel the opposite of a cozy irish pub and it was really cold inside. maybe because of the chilly room temperature, our food was lukewarm and mine was outright cold. I got the shrimp with chickpea curry. the first time around, it was tasty and the shrimp was cut into chunks in the curry, it was just cold. it took over 15 minutes before I received another attempt that was watery, much more flavorless and the shrimp was with tails, laying on top. I hate the idea of wasting food, so I ate the watery, flavorless curry and the manager (who was great) comped it and she gave me another to take home. but when I got home, I saw that they'd given me a regular curry sans shrimp. it was also watery without flavor, but I'm grateful to have enjoyed it for lunch today after adding more vegetables and seasoning. also, my friend ordered the mushroom potpie which tasted like lukewarm, watery mushroom soup with 2 puff pastries on top, she didn't even finish it. we all agreed that after being open for more than 2 months, they should have gotten it together better with the food. we don't feel the need to go back since we can get a pint of Guinness in another restaurant with better food. read more

Before sharing what to watch out for, let me first give positive credit where due... The food, beverage atmosphere and service were good and our party of 7 had a great time. Here's the 'could have been better' part... Had to deposit $200 to secure a group table which fortunately was applied at the end - though I had to follow-up two times to get this. Then, without ANY advance disclosure, they added a 5% admin fee, a 3% service charge, and mandated 20% for the regular tip without opportunity to adjust. Also, their payment machine persuades one to add an additional tip without disclosing the mandatory 20% tip level. All these fees were not shown until after one has paid. Obviously intentionally deceptive. We won't be back and do not recommend. read more

Food is fine, not bad but nothing great. If you're in the mood for a good Guinness I'd suggest going to an actual Irish pub. Big hype, small delivery. It may have been my expectations as the rumor was they brew Guiness on site but that was not the case, my fault. The wait was just around 1.5 hours (luckily we got a spot at the bar) with the line for a beer going around the building. Only one spot to order from the bar. They eventually had a server out assist cutting it in half. Besides that, beer was good and fun bar but food was a fail. We ordered every appetizer (one being forgotten) before entrees to see how it was and that was a disappointment. Skewers were extremely dry almost like they were batched cooked and then kept warm under a lamp. Wings were good, no more better than the wings I get down the street. Other than that, we decided to leave and go somewhere else for dinner. We figured it was because they just opened, the menus were still being printed from a printer and filthy, soft opening menus?? Servers were outstanding! Only reason we will give it another shot and the three star review. Going to give them a while to get on their feet. Otherwise there isn't anything we can't get from the brewery down the street, not worth the 30 min lyft. There is no designated parking, either valet or street. Good luck! read more

Visited the place today after work and I don't have much of an interest in coming back. The beer I got was good but my husband was hoping to have a snakebite or Irish Black Velvet which is Magners cider mixed with Guinness. We figure since Magners was made from Guinness before being owned by C&C, should be available..... apparently not. So that was sad news for my husband. My husband asked the waitress and she seemed confused about what Magners was.... The food came out and the burger and chicken sandwich were tasty. But, my husband ordered the beef stew. After he ate it-his stomach wasn't too happy and has had stomach issues after we left the place. I have no clue what happened with the stew.... But I would suggest skipping that.... I would suggest maybe serving cocktails that have other types of alcohol from Guinness on the menu because there are people who don't necessarily want beer. Overall the place was okay.... There can be improvements by incorporating other items of Guinness and maybe serving other alcoholic drinks that don't revolve around beer only. Just a thought..... read more

Servers need to be more attentive, food needs to be revised, and beer needs to be elevated. There's a lot other beer options in Chicago that are miles ahead of the simple beers that open gate offers. The servers were not attentive and when I provided feed back on the service and food, I was treated with attitude. I also sat there with an empty beer glass for at least 30 mins! I didn't see the waitress from the time I ordered my food, to when I asked for the bill. Not even to check in if I needed any condiments, nothing. The food was not great, the crab and corn dip was wayyyyy too salty. The steak Frits was way under, I mentioned to the waitress it was under and she replied it was served "medium rare" with such an attitude. Not only was the steak blue, the fat was still white. At least give customers the option to pick medium well as not everyone likes their steak that rare. I really had high hopes for this place and was truly disappointed. I hope it's just growing pains and I'll give them the benefit of them being new but I won't go back for a long time. Where to begin? When I made the reservation, it said On Stage at OGB or Standard. On Wednesday nights, they have live entertainment. Since I was with a friend I had not seen in a while and we wanted to catch up, I picked Standard. The hostess seated us as far as she could away from the music and it was still not far enough. At times, we could not hear ourselves from across the table. The acoustics are terrible. It is a horrible place for live music with the high ceilings and open floor plan. Looking back, what we should have done is finished our beers and left. That was our fault for not paying and leaving. Now to the food, can you say frozen dinner and microwave? We ordered the cheese curds. They were at our table within 5 minutes. I am assuming it took just long enough to take the bag out of the freezer, put them in a bowl, and zap them in the microwave. For our entrees, we ordered the fish and chips. The fish and chips again, frozen and zapped in the microwave for a couple minutes and then served. They were just slightly warm and tasteless. My final insight will probably be the most controversial. Another customer, a regular, was seated at the next table over with two large dogs. Imagine, two dogs weighing 50 - 70 pounds each. No one asked if this was okay. I do not particularly like dogs. They were very well behaved except for the one or two times they decided to crawl underneath our table to investigate the crumbs. We did not finish our food. My recommendation is go for a beer, not on Wednesday night, drink it and leave. The only good thing I can say about the experience is that I can now say I tried it and will never return. read more

Not a sincere Irish Breakfast. The eggs, bacon, potatoes and tomatoes are not accurate to Irish tradition. No black pudding. No Irish Breakfast Tea. What we have here is American diner food arranged in a way to appear like Irish Breakfast. Customer naïveté around these facts is taken advantage of for premium pricing. Huge, huge letdown considering each plate is $25. The price would make sense if it was special, and true to Ireland using Irish ingredients. If you want an earnest Irish breakfast, it's probably worth checking out an Irish pub. If the owner is reading this, I highly recommend increasing transparency to customers that your restaurant does not have a true Irish Breakfast. Guinness Brewery was a total let down a real disappointment , servise was very slow , they add 20% tips for groups over 6 so the server has no need to worry as they have a automatic tip . We went on Saturday night. Got 2 seats at the bar (very lucky) it was so busy. Absolutely get reservation's if you want to go there on a weekend. Service was great. We were greeted right away with menus. The Guinness was poured as it should be into a proper Guinness glass it was cold & creamy just like it should be. The Kinzie St Pale Ale was equally as cold & delicious. The Guinness Stew over Mashed Potatoes with Carrots was done perfectly. The new Chicago location is not ready to open. Host was ignorant and told us there's a 2 hour limit in the restaurant, which was empty and only 25% full when we left 35 minutes later. We had 5 adults and 3 small kids, two under 1yr old. The bill came and they added 20% gratuity because we had a party of eight. Guiness considers under 1year old babies as patrons. So 5 adults, two babies and a 12 yr old girl added up to 8 , 20% gratuities. It's not over, the waiter asked if we wanted to add a tip. Food was very limited, no soft drinks available for kids or adults who don't want a Guiness. Recommend staying away until staff is trained, adding soft drinks for kids, and parking. Food was ok, typical bar food. The logistics of getting a drink at the bar was very challenging; it is not set up to accommodate a very large place. It was starting to fill up and it was extremely loud, I mean very loud and by the time we left it was really busy and even louder. The servers were great but I could see they were overwhelmed; they are probably short staffed, like many places these days. Having just beer is also a problem, most breweries start out that way, but eventually have to add other options. I'll try it again after the kinks are ironed out. read more

Finally got to come visit Guinness Brewery. I'm glad it was actually pouring down rain so it wasn't that busy. Staff was very nice, then Jose Manuel took over our table. He was over the top nice and gave us lots of good info as to what some of beer cocktails tasted helped us with recommendations. I think we tried most. The appetizers were great! We didn't have dinner as we were full of Guinness and snacks. As far as what could be improved, coming from an Irish-Mexican household we enjoy good beer,whiskey,& tequila. So naturally we would try the "Michelada" umm it needs to go back to the drawing board.. if that's all we would say needs improvement it's suffice to say We definitely wil be back! Already have plans to bring more fam from out of town here. As well as got some good Chicago Guinness merch for our upcoming "Ireland" trip.. The menu on the restaurant's website doesn't match the food that's actually available. (they suggest calling first to find out what you can really eat.) I couldn't get the choices that motivated me to travel down there, so I settled for Caribbean salmon, which was not good (undercooked and too much citrus). It's in a weird location between two Metra lines and the Kennedy, and preserves the ambience of a remodeled warehouse: a big empty bare space. My server was excellent, Patient, attentive, helpful, and informative. The beer I tried was fine, The Irish tea ale. Little of the food struck me as Irish in style. It's three blocks from the grand Avenue blue line, and I felt safe walking there in daylight. I would not go there at night, except in a car. It is not in walking distance of the busy Fulton market district. They have valet parking but no self parking lot. Ample clean washrooms they were kind enough to comp my meal because my preferred items weren't available. I appreciate that. I asked to sit at a table, but instead I was seated at a high top bar on a barstool, which is difficult for me (I walk with a cane). All in all I was very disappointed, but I've had worse. read more
