This place is located near the ocean with indoor and. Outdoor seating. This time around, we sat outside. On a beautiful sunny socal afternoon, nothing beats a Gulf Stream lunch outside w ocean breeze. They had grilled artichoke on menu. If you see it, order it. AMAZING! The dip with mustard seed, was out of this world. Our server made great recommendation for what to split. We ended up ordering ahi sandwich which was a great compliment to 2 margarita we had. I called to make reservations for Father's Day for a party of 8, more than 1 week earlier. They said they can only take reservations for 4 but they'd try to put 2 tables together if we made 2 different reservations. We arrived 15 minutes early and let them know that we wanted to sit together but the hostess said she wouldn't be able to accommodate. I asked if the tables were close to each other and her reply was "no they're on opposite sides of the restaurant". We asked if she'd be able to arrange something outside since there were open tables there. She said if we waited an hour she be able to sit us outside but still not together. It's terrible how poor your service is. We were celebrating father's day for 2 and it was my dad's 80th bday. We had a cake and we drove an hour from LA to be there. We got to Gulfstream Restaurant a little bit early on Saturday night just to check out the ambience in the vibe. It was so nice and everyone was so friendly. We had an extra 15 minutes to grab a cocktail. We walked around a little bit, but nestled at the bar for 15 minutes as our table was not quite ready . We had a beautiful table right by the window to the outdoor patio . I am going to tell you that everything that we enjoyed the food was delicious the Aji grilled tuna salad with tomatoes and avocados was so fresh and so delicious just a delight to eat . Of course, we had the Washington oysters that were outstanding and so fresh ... we decided to have the grilled salmon and sweet bell peppers, very fresh, very filling, and so yummy... we brought our own bottle of wine, which was one of our favorite Chardonnays( $15 corkage fee, not bad) thank you golf stream... we decided to have the Tres Leche cake as a little treat for dessert. Unfortunately, the cake was either undercooked, or it was saturated with too much of the Leche, which was tasty. However, it made it very mushy. The flavor was there the consistency was off . Nice bananas blackberries, blueberries caramel. This is a dog friendly property. Plenty of parking they do have valet, but we were lucky and were able to park on our own and walk around. Gulfstream is an interesting part of the Hillstone restaurant collection with a blend of seafood and contemporary American offerings. The Newport Beach location offers a nice blend of casual outdoor and refined indoor ambiance. The bar is a tad small for such a busy location but the service staff are exceptional. We have been very pleased with servers, bar staff, and management on all but one occasion (see the bottom for that occasion). I recommend the grilled artichoke, biscuits, chicken and rice, ribs, emerald kale salad, any of their red wines, the delicious margaritas, and chowder. Hillstone makes the best fries too. If not for the one rude encounter, they would receive five stars. The one occasion we were addressed quite rude and abruptly by a tall bossy woman who claimed to be a manager in a way that almost lost my business. Despite receiving her "welcome" on the way to bar and sitting and ordering drinks and food at the bar, she later (1/2hr later) told us we needed to give up our seats and should have been on a bar waitlist, which we have never encountered at a Hillstone before. Multiple staff apologized for her outrageous behavior and we haven't seen her since so we hope she has been reassigned to something more appropriate for her temperament, like something that doesn't involve customer facing engagement. read more

Today my girlfriends and I had the barbecue shrimp (from the dinner menu) with six delicious shrimp swimming in a flavorful sauce that begged you to slather every bit of it on the bread that accompanied it. Our server, Deva, was so accommodating and pleasant, which made the experience a perfect day to meet with old friends. The salads are fresh and shareable and the crabcakes are surprisingly very good. First and foremost the front of the house was spot on, the receptionist was encouraging and helpful. We arrived at 3:30pm on Monday and the bar was sold out. We waited for a short time and got a seat at the bar, well worth the 10 minute wait. Greeted and served by an amazingly talented female bartender named Tiffany. Made Reservation for lunch (which hasn't been as necessary since Joey opened and taking ton of their business) and they were 10-15 mins late to seat us. Set tone that it is not the same Service. Empty drinks, dirty table. But I write the review for my people that care about value.... $55 for the Dover sole and had to eat again within an hour. Price wasn't on menu guess I should have asked. Happy to pay if it's a real meal. So stingy. Suggested this was a crazy price for such small portion. No one cares. Maybe not best place to come in general if you're a grown man under 60 and hungry and don't want to order multiple items. I will look to go elsewhere in 2025, and maybe venture outside of the nice but sterile Houston's chains in this area. read more

We were a party of seven celebrating a birthday. They informed us that they could not seat us together and instead put us at two tables next to each other. They do not have a children's menu and the only kid- friendly option was the hamburger which we were told is the only item they could modify and make plain. The food was good, but a bit pricey for what you get. Lastly, as we were leaving, leaving mind you, a manager came over and asked if our kids could be quiet. They were not loud in any way, if they had been I would have been the first to quiet them down. We went to celebrate my sister's birthday. Diego and the other greeters at the front were very friendly. Unfortunately, our waitress Stacey wasn't particularly friendly and didn't appear often. She didn't get our appetizer out before our meal and didn't seem to be interested in making sure we had what we needed. My sister's meal also came out cold. A man (possibly Eric?) stopped by to apologize for not getting the appetizer out before the meal. He said he would take it off the bill, but left it on instead. If we had the time, we would have asked for a new bill, but just took it off of the tip as the service wasn't good. My sister wrote a message on the bill and we got a call from the manager (Eric) after leaving. I tried to return the call but couldn't get him on the line. We have driven by several times and always wanted to stop in, so we finally made a New Year's Day reservation. The restaurant is beautiful, though we were a little confused by the website's insistence that reservations were only really available for parties of two. It seems like there are as many four tops in the restaurant as two tops, but our waiter explained that the four tops fill up via phone reservations several weeks in advance. I liked that the hostess took an initial drink order right when we sat down, and the crisp martini was different than any martini I had in the past and I really enjoyed it. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail was a bit firm but very fresh and the remoulade was very nice, though I have to say that the overall food experience was not as impressive as I expected for this first visit. We had temperature issues with both of our original dishes; my well-seasoned salmon was undercooked (i.e. raw) in the center so they put my partially eaten piece back on the grill to finish cooking. My husband ordered the Nueva Cubano, and the pork in the center was hot, but the cheese and the ham were cold so overall the dish was essentially lukewarm. Those challenges notwithstanding, our overall visit was good; our server, the manager, and the chef were all incredibly nice and accommodating, apologized for the errors, took care of everything, and ultimately left us with an intention to come back. We will return to try the artichokes and the Dover sole with a couple of friends now that we know we can have a larger party, and I look forward to updating the review when we do! read more

We have been to Gulfstream many times during the Thanksgiving holiday as we vacation in Newport during that time. We've taken our children and friends and the food and the service is always wonderful. We were sorely disappointed when we took our little grandson who was eight months old and needed a highchair and was told they do not have high chairs for infants. My only assumption is is that they are looking to not be a baby and small children friendly restaurant. So please be advised that if you want to bring a child who needs some kind of extra seating support you've gotta bring it for yourself! read more

Heavenly biscuits--so bomb wish they made the butter a little fancier like a herbed butter. Chopped Salad--this was good but kind of expensive for a $25 small salad with no protein besides egg. Bbq Shrimp--hmm so I took my first bite of the shrimp it was sooo chewy I was legit almost going to choke on it! I considered returning my plate but taking a smaller bite of another shrimp it was normal. So iono maybe that was overly cooked. But i've eaten thousands of shrimp and never tasted one like that. Having tried the bisquits, clam chowder, grouper sandwich and the BBQ shrimp, I can say with confidence that this is my FAVORITE restaurant in Newport. The service was attentive and friendly.
