Gulfstream is an interesting part of the Hillstone restaurant collection with a blend of seafood and contemporary American offerings. The Newport Beach location offers a nice blend of casual outdoor and refined indoor ambiance. The bar is a tad small for such a busy location but the service staff are exceptional. We have been very pleased with servers, bar staff, and management on all but one occasion (see the bottom for that occasion). I recommend the grilled artichoke, biscuits, chicken and rice, ribs, emerald kale salad, any of their red wines, the delicious margaritas, and chowder. Hillstone makes the best fries too. If not for the one rude encounter, they would receive five stars. The one occasion we were addressed quite rude and abruptly by a tall bossy woman who claimed to be a manager in a way that almost lost my business. Despite receiving her "welcome" on the way to bar and sitting and ordering drinks and food at the bar, she later (1/2hr later) told us we needed to give up our seats and should have been on a bar waitlist, which we have never encountered at a Hillstone before. Multiple staff apologized for her outrageous behavior and we haven't seen her since so we hope she has been reassigned to something more appropriate for her temperament, like something that doesn't involve customer facing engagement. read more

We have been to Gulfstream many times during the Thanksgiving holiday as we vacation in Newport during that time. We've taken our children and friends and the food and the service is always wonderful. We were sorely disappointed when we took our little grandson who was eight months old and needed a highchair and was told they do not have high chairs for infants. My only assumption is is that they are looking to not be a baby and small children friendly restaurant. So please be advised that if you want to bring a child who needs some kind of extra seating support you've gotta bring it for yourself! read more

My wife and I occasionally dine here. We love the shrimp cocktails. The last visit we ordered broiled salmon. About 1/3 of the way into it, we discovered it was raw in the center. We requested the cook finish cooking it. The shift manager suggested we should know they usually cook salmon rare and it was on us to specify in advance that it be cooked well, like a piece of beef. I find this strange as I am 82 years old and have been eating salmon my entire life and have never gotten a raw serving before. So buyer beware. read more

We have driven by several times and always wanted to stop in, so we finally made a New Year's Day reservation. The restaurant is beautiful, though we were a little confused by the website's insistence that reservations were only really available for parties of two. It seems like there are as many four tops in the restaurant as two tops, but our waiter explained that the four tops fill up via phone reservations several weeks in advance. I liked that the hostess took an initial drink order right when we sat down, and the crisp martini was different than any martini I had in the past and I really enjoyed it. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail was a bit firm but very fresh and the remoulade was very nice, though I have to say that the overall food experience was not as impressive as I expected for this first visit. We had temperature issues with both of our original dishes; my well-seasoned salmon was undercooked (i.e. raw) in the center so they put my partially eaten piece back on the grill to finish cooking. My husband ordered the Nueva Cubano, and the pork in the center was hot, but the cheese and the ham were cold so overall the dish was essentially lukewarm. Those challenges notwithstanding, our overall visit was good; our server, the manager, and the chef were all incredibly nice and accommodating, apologized for the errors, took care of everything, and ultimately left us with an intention to come back. We will return to try the artichokes and the Dover sole with a couple of friends now that we know we can have a larger party, and I look forward to updating the review when we do! read more

I will start off by saying this restaurant is really beautiful, I came here with a friend of mine they sat us outside in the patio where they had heaters to keep you warm. Now for the food part I ordered the clam chowder to start it was very mid and chunky for an entree I ordered the tuna tar tare this was absolutely terrible had almost a sweet taste to it my problem with places like these if it on the menu it better be good the prices are high to be served less than mediocre food. I ordered an ice tea to drink the waitress kept asking me if I wanted another one, shouldn't you just refill someone's drink if you see if it's empty? It's just iced tea, gave me the vibe like they're charging per ice tea what kind of greedy things is that. Been here twice. They have nice indoor and outdoor seating. Reservations can be made on their own website. Food: Smoked Salmon Appetizer--this was so good! I never get smoked salmon but this was very good! Hands good the best smoked salmon ever! And for $20 this is a steal its like a meal in itself. Heavenly biscuits--so bomb wish they made the butter a little fancier like a herbed butter. Chopped Salad--this was good but kind of expensive for a $25 small salad with no protein besides egg. Bbq Shrimp--hmm so I took my first bite of the shrimp it was sooo chewy I was legit almost going to choke on it! I considered returning my plate but taking a smaller bite of another shrimp it was normal. So iono maybe that was overly cooked. But i've eaten thousands of shrimp and never tasted one like that. I often wonder why the Hillstone restaurants, including Gulfstream, are so popular. They have a very limited menu, which, in my opinion, is extremely pricey. And, they have very strict rules which they never bend. Their extreme popularity has never totally made sense to me. At the same time, I find myself suggesting one of their restaurant time and time again, especially for business occasions. I guess it's because their execution is almost flawless...every time. You can always count on a good experience. And, while the menu is very limited, the food quality and flavor profiles are pretty amazing. My most recent visit was a perfect example of the good and bad. I went there for a meeting with a couple of business associates. The service, as always, was very efficient and friendly. I wanted to order a salad, but struggled to find the kind I was looking for. I settled for the Pan Seared Tuna Salad. The server highly recommended it, but warned me it was not a traditional salad and was a relatively small portion. It had mango in it, so I decided to give it a try. The server's description was spot on. It was more like a small portion of seared tuna with a mango salsa on the side. The flavors were fantastic, though, especially with the Sesame Miso Dressing. I loved every bite, and, at the end, wished there was more. Ok, that was the a lot of good with very little bad. What frustrated me about their self-induced limitations was that they do not have decaf coffee. I had already worked my way through three iced teas, and it was time to cut off the caffeine. But, after a great meal, I love to have some coffee. And, maybe some dessert. But, no dessert without coffee. So, I left a little unsatisfied. If you like great service, very flavorful food, small, somewhat pricey menus and caffeine, Gulfstream is the place for you! And, despite the minor frustration, I'm sure to be back there for my next business lunch. read more

The negative reviews for this restaurant are laughable. If Gulfstream is anything, it is predictably excellent. I have family from far and near that must dine here every visit; if not for their shrimp cocktail with homemade tartar sauce alone. Additionally, the fish sandwich, the burger, the New Orleans barbecue shrimp, and the Ruby Star Salad--OMGGGGG! This restaurant far surpasses Oceans 48, which recently opened (but I reeeally don't want you to know that bc it will be an even longer wait). Things to know: No parties over 4, it's beautiful and classy here where NB's billionaires and housewives like to hang out, and my personal passes are the ribs (don't care for the mustard sauce), house salad, or Dover sole (it's fine, but nothing to write home about). At the end of our evening while the 4 of us were enjoying our last cocktails & conversation, she brought frosted glasses & poured the remainder of our current drinks to refresh them for us. Talk about going above & beyond! We never come here without starting with our favorite-the chilled cocktail prawns. They are simply the best! Told the hostess we were a family of 5 adults and two children and was immediately met with that they didn't have any high chairs for the children. I then asked what did they do for children to where the hostess said; I'm sorry we just don't have high chairs and the booths are too small for any extra seats. If discrimination was an Olympic sport, this place would win a gold medal. -4 stars wasn't an option. I have never experienced such blatant discriminatory behavior from a restaurant group, and I feel obligated to share what happened. Two friends of mine , one African-American and one Hispanic-presenting, arrived at a half-empty restaurant and were told there was no seating available. I joined them shortly after. As a blonde, white-presenting woman, I was immediately welcomed and told a party of nine could be accommodated without any issue. The contrast was impossible to ignore. We were initially seated at the fire pit, ordered drinks and appetizers, and received good service from our first server. When the ninth guest in our party arrived and was welcomed to a table without question. We were moved to 2 table outdoors set for 4 people each. We politely requested one additional chair so all nine of us could sit. The restaurant was nowhere near full (2:30 PM on a Sunday), with numerous empty tables and spare chairs around us. A hostess handed us menus, but a male manager then came over stating: We could not add a chair, despite plenty available and one person could sit alone at a distant table or leave. We were quiet, respectful, and well-dressed. There was absolutely no legitimate operational reason for this treatment. The only difference between how we were welcomed vs. denied service was race and appearance and that is unacceptable. Especially amongst a group of women. We left without finishing our meal due to the discomfort and discriminatory treatment. When we later contacted the Houston Restaurant Group about this incident, we were told: "We don't need your money." After five years of bringing tens of thousands of dollars in business to this group, I can confidently say you will not see us again. Customers deserve to be treated with basic dignity. To see every negative review in the last 6 months combatted with a positive review immediately afterwards, shows an insider is writing these Houston Restaurant Group reviews trying the best they can to preserve their reputation in Newport Beach. read more
