Small Authentic Taiwanese eatery in the hustle and bustle of Long Island City. Took me a while to get here since parking is an absolute nightmare however I had Jury Duty today so why not two birds with one stone. This is a no brainer if you're in the area. Fantastic lineup of all the typical Taiwanese eats and everything is made fresh. I dined in but the endless pickups simply told me everyone is onto this. Their playlist is even Taiwanese. Staff is very energetic and very friendly. I only wish the prices were like Taiwan lol but reality of NY prices is a bit intimidating. No matter, this is a great spot.
My Taiwanese friend said this is one of the few restaurants in NYC that actually serve authentic Taiwanese food so I had to give it a try since I was in the area. We arrived around ~1pm on a weekday and there were seats available for dine-in but we opted for takeout because we weren't that hungry and their dine-in menu only consists of $20+ combos that include a main, popcorn chicken, a few sides and a drink. Don't worry about finding somewhere to sit down and eat at if you opt for take-out! There's a food hall conveniently located a few blocks away with tables available for dining. Lu rou fan- Loved this!! The flavor and consistency of the sauce is exactly what it's supposed to taste like. Braised beef noodles- Absolutely loved the springiness of the noodles and the depth of the aromatic soup. The beef was very tender and was braised properly because the meat fell apart as soon as I bit into it. Bok choy to the rescue in helping mellow out the heaviness of the meat and broth. Aside from the delicious and authentic food, the service was also very friendly and quick. I ordered at the kiosk up front and got my order within 10 mins after I ordered. I do think the beef noodle soup, although tasty, was a bit overpriced but the Lu rou fan was definitely worth it. It is highly likely I'll be back if I'm ever in the mood for Taiwanese food.
Warning it is a very small shop with only 5 high chairs facing the kitchen so if you don't come at a lucky time, wait can easily be 30mins if you're waiting for people to finish up as food does take awhile come too. Luckily I only waited a few minutes for a table but long time for food. Got the beef combo set for each of us and it was $30 each, more expensive than previous menu (!!) but the combo set does includes a super super small chicken soup cup, iced tea (meh), popcorn chicken (the best thing here!), and bowl of noodles/veggies. The beef in the soup was veryyyy tender (amazing) and noodles were delicious too. And the combo set had a lot of food included so even though it's more pricey at $30 you'll still definitely be filled! Other combo sets with chicken or pork over rice were like $25. The other girls and guys working in the back were great with providing noodle refill, takeout bags, and friendly! Just the front desk girl that was giving a little bit of a fresh snarky vibe ever since the beginning when we were looking for the menu on the kiosk since there were no physical menus and got scolded that since we're dining in we shouldn't look there but did not tell us anything else. Tables were also still dirty as she only picked trays up and barely wiped. When we ordered, we said we both wanted the same noodle combo and she judgingly said in a tone that implied we should've known better, that we both need to order a combo set but that's exactly what we said?? Anyways, at the end, we wanted take out containers and bag which the guy so kindly and detail oriented packed everything in separate containers so nice. When paying my friend asked for the thicker bag to carry the food and she rudely said the thin plastic thank you bags were enough while at the same time when other guy kindly gave me two for me and the friend. Overall the front lady just didn't seem friendly. But she was friendly to her regulars. Felt unwelcoming because of this but foods/price is ok
Food is incredible but my most recent visit I told the hostess, after an hour of waiting, that I had to step out to use the bathroom (they don't have one). Within 5 minutes of me going around the corner and back they said my table was ready, then promptly cancelled my spot (check screenshot, it was literally one minute apart) and said I had to get back on line. No love for the food can repair that experience. Good lord.
I desperately wanted to like this place because I've been on the long search for authentic good Taiwanese food on the east coast. The food is authentic but the bento boxes (at least when you order to go) can really be improved. We ordered the popcorn chicken bento box and was just shocked at how much white rice they give you and little amount of popcorn chicken. The popcorn chicken was nothing special. It also came with vermicelli and this really bland Napa cabbage as sides. Honestly vermicelli as a side is so strange and overload on carbs - I think it'll be better if it was switched out to another vegetable such as bean sprouts, green vegetables, etc.. I was surprised they didn't flavor the white rice with braise pork sauces. With how much competition Gulp has around the neighborhood they really need to improve on their bento box selections. Their breakfast menu actually stands out more to me than their regular menu. The options are pretty affordable. The place has a more casual cafe ambiance than a sit down restaurant ambiance. Maybe if I had dined in it would be a different experience? The photos had looked better for the dined in Bento boxes for some reason. The take out was mediocre.
Gulp is my favorite Taiwanese spot in LIC! I ordered dinner from here twice and each time was amazing so I decided to come in person today for breakfast. Before I talk about breakfast, I'll talk about dinner. They give generous portions for their Lu Rou fan and bento sets. I also like how their pork is lean and not fatty - which is really important for me. They package it well too in quality bags. For breakfast, they serve set menus if you sit in restaurant and it's pleasant being able to see your food made right in front of you. Limited seating but the vibe is kind of eat and leave, so not a big deal. The lady who took our order was also really nice and asked if it was our first time visiting/how we heard about them, which I appreciated because it shows they remember their customers 10/10 highly recommend!!!
Very solid place especially since it's one of the few places in LIC thats open late on a weekday! It was a cold winter night, and I really wanted to have soup, so having their beef noodle soup really hit the spot. Really like how they have these sets, and the one I got came with a free extra serving of noodles to fully utilize the soup. This place is really small (only 5ish seats of bar seating). If you need to use the bathroom, you need to go to the secret bar in the back and use theirs. There were a lot of take out orders, so I imagine this restaurant is manly servicing people who live in the area. My main complaint is that compared to Taiwan, the prices are so much higher. No fault to the restaurant since I'm sure this is a symptom of US and NYC pricing, but if you make a direct comparison food always will taste better when it's better value. Overall would recommend especially as a late night weekday place when there's less competition for dining in seating (waited ~10 minutes).
Great takeout spot. We came here not realizing that there's only 6 counter seats. Luckily we were able to get seated within 15 minutes. I ordered the beef noodle soup set. It was so much food. The beef was so tender, it was falling apart and melted in my mouth. Staff even offered more noodles at the end if we wanted, but we were already stuffed. There's also a really vibey Japanese record bar in the back for an after-dinner activity.
WOW! This is hands down my favorite taiwanese spot in NYC. Which is high praise because there's a lot of good food in the city that in order to stand out, you have to be extremely good. I love how small and intimate this location is, it feels like I'm back in taiwan. There's only five seats at the bar but you can put your name on the waitlist and grab a drink at their speakeasy in the back. My friends and I didn't wait too long, it was perfect timing cause by the time we finished our drink, our seats were ready. We each got a set (required if dining in and honestly such a great value). They started us off with a sample of their homemade chicken broth which was unlike any broth. So rich and healing. I got the Lu Rou Fan which was my favorite. One of my friends got the beef noodle soup, very flavorful. And my other friend got the half chicken half pork bowl.
I got the dry noodle set and loved the meal! My favorite was the fried chicken side. A lot of the dishes reminded me of some viet dishes and felt very familiar. The place is small inside although it is a great experience to eat here! I would go again. Each set was wonderfully priced with packed flavour! The mushrooms were also amazing from here! I would buy them in bulk if I could!
I was quite surprised that I actually loved this place! Their lunch options are a fair price for how filling they are. I tried the dry braised pork noodles and they were delicious. The noodles were the perfect, bouncy texture and the meat was hearty. The popcorn chicken was very crispy, juicy, and flavorful. The breading was the perfect amount, not too much. Im surprised by how good this was! The side is just okay. They're very friendly and the service is great. It's a small place with limited dine in seating. Happy to return!
This is the BEST place for authentic Taiwanese flavors!! There's barely any seating with 5 bar seats, but it was honestly worth the 25 min wait for me. I got the lu rou dry noodle combo, and it was absolutely delicious. The texture of the noodles was S tier (super chewy yet soft), and I love that it comes with popcorn chicken and iced tea as well. Wow! We did dine-in which is combos only. But worry not, they are super worth it. Generous portions and free/cheap refills depending on what you get. Totally recommend! Never been to Taiwan but I think I got a really good taste of it at Gulp :) Warning: location is small and seems like take-out is a big thing. So if you will dine-in, it's possible you'll have to wait. But again, worth it!!! read more

What a gem of a place! Gulp is a tiny hole in the wall with counter seating that serves up some comforting bowls of beef noodle soup, braised pork over rice and braised pork over noodles among other Taiwanese street snacks like popcorn chicken, fried pork chop, fried chicken chop and Taiwanese sausage. We tried two combos, the beef noodle soup was light and aromatic with the most tender pieces of beef. The braised pork over noodles had a great sauce to coat the noodles. Felt like I was having Taiwanese spaghetti. The combo came with popcorn chicken, side of rice noodle with cabbage and tea egg and iced Jasmine tea. We also ordered a Taiwanese pork chop to go, SO GOOD. They were busy with takeout orders all night. There were a lot of staff working in sync to push out orders and they seem to have a great rhythm. I've seen this place all over social media and I knew I had to go one day. Me and my friend were so lucky and managed to snag two out of their five seats at 5pm on a Thursday. After scanning the QR code for the menu pasted on the back of a mini pinball game, we each ordered a set: Lou Rou Fan for me and Beef Noodle Soup for her. We started off with one of the most interesting things I've ever eaten. It tasted so familiar and when I asked an employee they said it was cherry tomatoes marinaded in sprite. Once you heard sprite, you could taste the unmistakable notes of the lemon lime soda. It was really cool to watch the workers make your food in front of you in the open concept kitchen, building up anticipation for your food to arrive. The Lou Rou Fan was delicious, with the savory, sweet sauce covering every grain of rice and the small pieces of pork belly melting in your mouth. The fried chicken pieces were juicy and flavorful. Even the veggie and vermicelli side dish was good, with a taste of sesame oil. The small cup of iced tea was a nice refreshing touch. The nice workers offered small bowls so we could share entrees. The noodles were good, in a rich beefy broth, and the beef shank was flavorful but I much preferred my pork rice. Overall, a MUST try in LIC for delicious authentic Taiwanese food! read more

Hm 3.75 stars and rounded up. Came this weekend with a couple friends at 6pm and put our names down on the waitlist since there's only 5 seats at the bar. It's mostly a takeout place and I saw probably 3 times the amount of take out orders being prepped compared to eat-in orders. You scan a QR code to put your name down and we waited about 20 minutes, coming back when we got the text. Sitting at the counter we scanned the menu QR codes cleverly printed on stickers on the back of mini pinball games. They passed us little shooters of chicken broth--a warm, savory start to the meal. Food was ready within 5-7 minutes. We each ordered a set, which came with 1) a small bowl of rice noodles and boiled Napa cabbage with a tea egg, in what tasted like a soysaucr-based broth. This was simple though tasted like a bit of homemade comfort food, 2) a small saucer of deep fried salt and pepper popcorn chicken, a tad bit of crunch--tasty! and 3) a glass of traditional lightly sweetened black tea, this tasted a bit like grass jelly to me. I enjoyed all the sides. Main items were the following: LuRou Dry Noodles $20: diced braised pork belly over noodles. Great flavor, a bit oily--though I guess it is pork belly after all. You can get a second bowl dining in for $3, which is a steal! Beef Noodle Soup $26: generous serving of braised beef shank in beef broth, flavor was a bit light on the broth than what I'm used to, there was a bit too much oil on the top layer of the soup. Chicken and LuRou Rice $24: this is the same minced braised pork belly on the noodles, and mixed chicken as well (which I didn't taste), served over rice. Staff was cordial and seemed quite busy--they managed to fit 5-6 people in a very tight kitchen! To pay go up to the counter after your meal. 929 bar is located directly inside from the kitchen and counter thru the unmarked door at the back right. read more

Two of my favorite foods in the world is Taiwanese beef noodle soup and Taiwanese chicken cutlet - so of course that's what I had to order! I came in at 9 pm on a Friday night and they had quite a decent amount of people waiting outside for their food. Being that it's a small store with not a lot of seats, I also ordered mine to go. Now for the food - I did wish the beef noodle soup had more flavor and the chicken to be juicier and bigger. However, I imagine I'll still end up coming here. Taiwanese popcorn chicken is a lot more popular here in NYC compared to a whole Taiwanese chicken cutlet and being that they open late, this is one of the few places I'm able to get it if I have late night cravings read more

Tiny restaurant with just 5 seats at the bar. They serve breakfast and lunch and have a limited menu. Everything comes as a set combo. Every part of it is delicious and warming. Saw this place on TikTok and knew I had to try! We came the day after a snow storm and the restaurant was full (there is only bar seating and no bathroom). We waited about 20 minutes before being able to sit as a party of 2. But since it is bad seating you can watch the chefs at work. I got the lu rou fan set and bf got the beef noodle soup set. I love the idea of the set. It was the perfect amount of food which consisted of an iced sweetened tea, chicken soup, a small dish of noodles and veggies, popcorn chicken which was amazingly juicy and crispy and your main. My Lu rou fan was amazingly satisfying, at first I had wished my pork wasn't as finely diced but it did make sure the rice was nicely coated with the pork. It was just fatty enough to my liking. Would get again. Wish there were more radishes but the table also has a shared sauce rack with pickled vegetables which I helped myself to multiple times. The beef noodle soup was a little oily for my liking but the spice was really great. A very strong 5 spice taste and spell and they even offer a free serving of noodles. Bf also mentioned how they were not stingy with the meat so that's good. read more

I'd recently been to 929, which was phenomenal! But the food at Gulp was disappointing. I placed an online order through Yelp and my food was ready in just a few minutes. Unfortunately, basically every element of the popcorn chicken bento was lacking: - popcorn chicken: the chicken itself was dry for dark meat, and the coating of breading wasn't thick enough to create a satisfying crunch - napa cabbage: undercooked and not seasoned at all. Extremely bland and close to raw. - noodle side dish: goopy and really saucy, and way too salty. The complete opposite of the Napa cabbage. The only passable component of the bento was the seasoned egg. read more

I came here on a Thursday for a quick dinner with a friend. The bar seats 4-5(?) bar stools for dine-in service. I would say it's likely first come first serve. We both got the combo meal (available only dining-in). I opt for the lu ruo fan (braised pork over rice) and it comes with taiwanese fried chicken, side of garlic noodles, tea egg, radishes, and a cup of refreshing herbal(?) tea. The service was very good. We initially had to wait for seats, but we were allowed to sit in their speakeasy 929 for a drink while we waited. They called us when our seats were ready. Didn't meet expectations of the hype. We dined in and got two different sets- the pork rice and the beef noodle soup. The counter only seats 5 people but they have a QR code to join the waitlist. Both were underwhelming for the price. The rice bowl was packed but just didn't hit with flavor. The beef soup was also only ok. The beef was tender but nothing spectacular. The noodles were fine and so was the soup. Just not up to the hype they have. The sides were also just ok. The popcorn chicken was quite soft and under seasoned. They have a promotion where you get a free drink in return for a 5 star review so that may be why they have such high ratings. read more

We visited Gulp to check out their Taiwanese-style beef noodle soup. The restaurant is primarily geared for take-out, as it only has four counter-top seats overlooking the cooking area. - Beef Noodle Soup 牛肉麵: $20; $21.78 with tax. Four thick slices of beef in broth with noodles. The beef was soft and tasty. The broth was very strongly flavored and substantive, and congealed well when placed into the refrigerator. The noodles were only OK. While I wish this soup included some leafy greens, it seems most people go for take-out, so it is easy to add one's own. - Golden Radish Cake 蘿蔔糕: $8; $8.71 with tax. Well-made, but plain. Not worth it. Be forewarned that parking in this neighborhood may not be easy. read more

This was one of the best meals that I've had in a long time - every bite wowed me. I dined in (there are ~5 seats on the bar and you might have to wait) and got the braised pork dry noodle combo, which came with this sweet pickled tomato starter, a lightly sweet iced tea, delicious and crispy popcorn chicken, and vermicelli and cabbage. The noodles themselves were a wonderful texture and the sauce was deeply flavorful and filled with juicy bites of pork. The staff are super attentive and helpful. Ambiance: Made for fast dining (only 5 countertop seats) and grab n' go. Food: - Braised pork dry noodles: Delicious! The noodles are a perfect consistency. Coming from LA, I was excited to try this new Taiwanese place. We struggled to find parking only to be lucky to find one spot right in front. We entered into this tiny place with bar seating for total 5 seats, but luckily just enough 3 empty seats for us! The menu is limited, and two of us wanted to share a combo, but the waiter said if we sit down, we need to each order a combo. That is disappointing. If that was a policy, it should've been written somewhere. We ended up getting combos: -beef noodle soup (free extra noodles) - beef texture is very good. -zhajiang noodles - very good. -braised pork rice (pork flavor and texture was very good) Ecstatic that combos come with cold noodles, brocolli, popcorn chicken, half egg, and tea. The sides were delicious...everything was...and love that they come in the combo. A lot of food for a good price...great value. If I was eating a whole combo by myself, it would be two meals. As I was pulling out of parallel parking, a car pulled up next to me honking pointing to the building next to me...OMG I was parked in front of a tiny garage/driveway! Ordered a beef noodle soup and a braised pork rice - both were combo sets that came with a small portion of popcorn chicken and glass noodle with boiled veggies). The beef noodle soups comes with a complimentary second serving of noodles, which makes for a VERY filling bowl of noodles. Soup is already flavorful and delicious enough, but there's chili sauce available for you to really amp things up. Picked veggies are also available as condiments to add to your liking. The braised pork rice is perfectly fatty, though the generosity in portion of sauce + pork provided calls for a little bit more rice for my personally liking. A little stronger soy flavor would've been perfect in my opinion. Popcorn chicken has perfectly light & crispy coating of batter and has the right amount of seasoning. Glass noodles + veggies really paired well and help to cut the fattiness of the braised pork rice Prompt and friendly service. Cute and well organized, yet intimate dining space, with 5 bar stools at the counter - open kitchen concept. Very cool to watch some of the cooking and playing take place, as well as listening to all the sounds. Really nice spot to just chill and to enjoy a nice & decently priced meal for good value. Hot noodle soup really hits the spot on a rainy and overcast day as well. Door/entryway to 929 (the bar) is also inside of the restaurant. 5/5 - Will return! read more
This is a true hole in the wall. Only 5 seats across a bar space which can be a little warm in the summer, but food was authentic, delicious and staff was warm. My husband said that this was the first place outside of Taiwan that had food like this in the past 15 years and my daughter ate our leftovers when we got home and told us that the food the best food she has ever eaten . I got the Lou Ro Fan because it was traditional and my husband got the noodle version because it was way too hot for beef noodle soup today. They were both great in their own ways, but the noodle really soaked up the sauce and they offer $3 for a second bowl which was a true second bowl, not just plain noodles added to the bowl. I had always wanted to try this place out and finally got to walk in! They have 4-5 seats and I think there's a waitlist that you can join. The eat-in menu and take-out menu are different, but either way, their food is so delicious!!! When i ate at the restaurant, everything came with a combo, and if you got a noodle dish, the re-noodling was only like $6 or something crazy. Food is good, had the beef soup noodle and popcorn chicken. Soup was super savory and the beef was SPLENDID. Perfectly cooked piece of beef that should be in this type of food, where you have lean meat and tendon. I missed more veggies here like some bok choy Popcorn chicken good size. I'm Taiwanese and often make Taiwanese food at home, so I was so excited to hear about this Taiwanese spot in the city - this is a tiny, cute little shop in a popular area of LIC, and only seats maybe fewer than 10 people at a time. Every time I've come by, the seating was full, so finally one day after the third time this happened I decided to order takeout instead. We ordered the braised pork belly over rice and the beef noodle soup - the pork belly over rice had way more rice than it had meat, and both dishes were really bland. I tried to add more seasoning to them at home, but even the noodle texture was just not right - everything just really felt like soup diluted to 10% of what it originally was and the noodles weren't anything like I expected - not chewy and just really soggy. We didn't take that long (maybe 10 minutes?) to get home either so not sure how it could have possibly gotten so soggy and soft so quickly. I've had a lot of takeout Taiwanese food back in California and in Taiwan (and just at home when I make it) and truly good food would still be flavorful and delicious -- whether it's 5 minutes or an hour afterward. Picture attached also has some leftovers from other places we went to earlier that day - just look at the food in the black containers! Those are from Gulp. 5-seat restaurant specializing in Luroufan and Taiwanese fried chicken. The portions are pretty decent, and come with a couple small sides. The luroufan was one of my favorites I've eaten in nyc. Due to the limited seating, it's easiest to come at off-peak times and with less than 3 people to reduce weighting. read more

Came at 7:30 PM on a Saturday and there was no wait, though it's a tiny spot (only 5 stools at the counter). My boyfriend and I shared the beef noodle soup combo, which comes with popcorn chicken and cabbage. The soup was fantastic and I loved the cabbage as well. Chicken was solid. The server told us they have a $30 minimum (?) so we added a side of popcorn chicken. The dine-in menu is pretty limited, so will get takeout next time in order to try the sweet potato fries and other menu items that are takeout-only! read more
