NYC typically rivals the Chinese food you can find in the Bay Area and Hupo certainly helps that case. Focusing on Sichuan style cuisine, Hupo has a wide array of entrees and bites that will leave you full and wanting to come back for more. They certainly do deserve their Bib Gourmand. We had a reservation for 5 set for dinner and were glad we did so as the place was very busy when we arrived. The interior is clean and simple with no frills. Once seated we were informed that they only have digital menus through a QR code which was a bit difficult to navigate with 2 out of the 5 of us being older and not as tech savvy but we figured it out anyways. We ordered a few different entrees and split them family style so we'll go over them generally. Side note: although many of the dishes are noted as being spicy you can request that they be made without any spice. For dim sum/appetizers we ordered the scallion pancakes and pork soup dumplings. The scallion pancakes were okay, nothing special about them but the pork soup dumplings were a bit better with a tasty broth inside and nice chewy dumplings. For entrees we got duck fried rice, braised beef noodle soup, beef with broccoli, and dan dan noodles. The duck fried rice was very good. Many places opt to use day-old rice for fried rice and you can often tell by the texture, but if they do that here then we were fooled because the rice tastes fresh and the duck was perfect. The braised beef noodle soup was also good, not the best we've had, but still good with the beef having a nice texture and the broth being rich. The beef with broccoli was great, the beef velvetized and delicious, the broccoli, well, broccoli. Lastly, the dan dan noodles were fantastic. The noodles were cooked perfect, the minced beef very delicious, and the bok choy tasty as well. As it is food wise, Hupo is a standout, particularly in the Western Queens area, the only knock being its service is a bit iffy with the workers being not too warm but for the meal you get, we're willing to shut up and just eat. Great Sichuan food in LIC! The flavors were good, food came out quick, and service was nice as well. We had the Fried Fish (香辣魚片) which had a beautifully fried crust with flaky cod inside. The peppers added a hint of spiciness and the lime juice added a bit of freshness. We also tried the classic eggplant in garlic sauce (魚香茄子) which was bursting in flavor. I came here for their lunch service and had a great time! The inside of the restaurant is cozy, warm, and has seating for different party sizes. Service was really quick and nice. I got the sticky rice siu mai, the crab XLB, stir-fried noodles, sichuan chicken, and sweet and sour pork ribs. Everything was phenomenal. I thought that the sticky rice siu mai and XLB stood out the most. The sticky rice siu mai was full of flavor and chewy. The crab XLB was abundant with crab and the soup broth was so rich. Loved how crispy the sichuan chicken was! And, while the noodles and ribs were also delicious, I did think they were a bit on the drier side. The soup dumplings were the best part and definitely worth coming for, although they don't serve any ginger with it, and told us there was none in the back (HUGE red flag for an authentic Chinese restaurant). Cumin lamb was just dry, mapo tofu was bland (of all things), tea smoked duck was DRY... how do you mess up duck? The other good dish was the fried green beans but... they're green beans. We made a reservation for a Wednesday night, which was easy to get and ended up being unnecessary; the restaurant was maybe half full when we arrived at 7:30. The interior is small but pleasant, and the column of Michelin stickers on the window as we walked in the front door was a cool flex and a welcome sight! I got the Chungking Spicy Chicken and a small side of white rice -- a simple order, since the entree consisted solely of small pieces of lightly fried chicken and dried peppers. The spice was real, and the chicken was amazing. Delicately fried, immensely flavorful, and hard to beat texture-wise, as it practically melted in my mouth as I ate it. Still love this spot, but this time, some of the food was a bit salty. Also, given their megillah of a menu, having to scroll through the entire menu on a phone was rather cumbersome and annoying. For apps, we got the: Shrimp Dumplings (4): Pretty standard issue, tasty. Eggplant with Garlic Dressing - fresh eggplant mixed house special garlic sauce with chili oil: This was a little salty, but super super flavorful - tender and very garlicky (yum!) Bang Bang Chicken - Red meat chicken mixed with house special chili sauce, sesame paste and peppercorn oil: also a tad bit salty, but with a very nice kick - and the pairing with cucumber on the bottom of the dish is a great refresher. For Mains, my folks got the Sautéed Duck with Ginger and the Spicy Cumin Lamb, while I went for the Stewed Beef in Hot Chili Soup. All very tasty (and the sautéed duck was amazingly smoky). Decent portion sizes, though, as they note, rice not included with the mains. And for a sweet ending, we got the Green tea Ice Cream and Strawberry Dragon Eggs. The green tea ice was some of the better I've recent had, and loved the ample amount of crushed oreos in the dragon eggs. All and all, aside from some slightly annoying hiccups, Hupo is still my favorite local Szechuan/Chinese spot. read more

Came by for dinner on Sunday with a friend. We didn't have a reservation but there were just a handful of tables open when we got there around 7pm (so probably best to make a res). We ordered: Chungking spicy chicken (重慶辣子雞) - this was so good! The chicken was crispy yet tender on the inside, and I thought that the spice level was at a good (authentic) level. Also, I was pleasantly surprised how much chicken there was (a lot of restaurants seem to give you something more like a bowl of peppers with a little bit of chicken lol). I think price point was high for the portionsize, but regardless, I'd definitely recommend this. Mapo tofu (麻婆豆腐): Pretty good. I thought the flavour was pretty rich throughout, but it wasn't really spicy. The tofu was very soft and silky, which was nice, but overall it felt like a generic tofu side dish rather than a classic spicy/szechuan staple. Considering that it was a vegetarian dish (e.g. no ground pork/beef), it did seem to be a bit pricey. Szechuan garlic pork (蒜泥白肉): A good non-spicy complement to the other dishes. The pork was soft and flavourful, and it paired nicely with the light soy-sauce/garlic sauce. It was quite salty, though, and really had to be eaten with some rice to balance that out. Considering the price point (I think this was an appetiser?), the portion size was quite considerable and probably should count as a full entree. Overall, a pretty good meal. Price point leaned a bit high, but still fairly reasonable. It would be nice to come back to try some other dishes next time. (I saw that some of their cocktails seemed very intriguing!) read more

We split a bunch of top dishes like mapo tofu, chungking spicy chicken, stewed fish filet with pickled cabbage, Szechuan style beef with tofu, crispy fish fillet, green beans and duck fried rice. My friends and I had a 7:15 reservation on a Friday. I pushed it to 7:45, and we were seated at 8 at one of the booths. (You need to give a credit card when you book reservation online.) The people working here were very nice and accommodating. Our food came out at a good pace. Awesome cocktail menu overall, though I'd have liked a few more whisky options. Restaurant Week NYC: Hupo My stay in NYC just so happened to land on restaurant week, so I was very excited to try some of the best restaurants in NYC! Hupo is one of my friend's favorite restaurants so he brought me to try that. We got the 4 course (60) dinner deal. We each chose an appetizer which came with wine, vegetable, entree which came with a paired cocktail, and a dessert. I got the Spicy baby Cuttlefish, Sautéed Bok Choy with Abalone, Ma-La Lobster Tail, and peach gum with milk. He got the cucumber soup dumplings,, snow pea shoot with garlic, spicy lamb chop, and black sesame rice ball. We try a bit of each others so we could get a taste of most of the menu. Needless to say, this deal is extremely worth it and I'm very happy this was my first dinner spot. All the entrees were fantastic and the service was wonderful. I loved the cocktail that they chose to pair with my lobster tail. I also thoroughly enjoyed the cuttlefish, the cucumber dumplings, snow pea shoot with garlic and lamb chops. The really good: Spicy Fried fish filet Chuanking fried chicken Both of these are really similar in taste. Crowds favorite among our group! A really solid Chinese restaurant located near Hunters Point. Their eggplant was one of my favorites, and the snow peas were well cooked and flavorful. Additionally, the La Zi Ji (Chongqing Spicy Chicken) was primarily chicken, which was great to see since most Chinese places try to cut costs by making the dish 70% peppers. The Mapo Tofu was just okay, but they do make it completely vegetarian friendly so it's nice having that option for your vegetarian friends :) It was a bit pricey, but about in line with every other "nice" Chinese restaurant in the area. read more

I do see that they have different course meal and drink pairings and more family-style dishes for sit down, so would definitely be open to trying that if I visit the restaurant for dinner. read more

Hupo is a great place for Sichuan food in LIC. I've been to other Sichuan places in Manhattan, such as Blue Willow, and I prefer the food here. I enjoy the traditional Chinese decor and the ambiance of the place at night. Walk-ins are possible, but I would recommend making a reservation in case they're busy. I would recommend ordering family style, where dishes are ordered to share with the entire table. I came as a group of six and we really liked the cumin lamb and green onion pancake. A good Sichuanese option for those that are in LIC. The menu is pretty classically Sichuan with most of the options focused from that region. The food at Hupo was pretty solid. We ordered the Dandan noodles, chili wontons, and and stewed beef. The dandan noodles were probably the weakest part of the meal as I found them a tad too sweet for my liking. The texture of the noodles were great but just wasn't quite my cup of tea. Chili wontons were good with plenty of spice. The stewed beef was pretty great as it was incredibly fragrant and had plenty of red chili flavor. Service was quick and I felt that we were well looked after. The restaurant is fairly small but I felt like we had plenty of room. Overall, I don't think Hupo is quite worth it as a destination spot, given the great options throughout the city, but if you're in the area I don't think you can go wrong. read more
