Good, solid diner. We came on a Sunday at noon and it was packed. We were a party of 5 and they were able to sit us in the back. Our waiter came right away to offer water and take drinks. When he returned we hadn't even looked at the menu so we asked him to come back. 15 minutes later he came for our orders. Food all arrived and everyone seemed happy with their meals. Salads, panini, eggs and an egg sandwich. Everything was made as ordered. They never came back to refill our coffees, water or take our plates. Maybe it was just a busy day? Firstly; if you are disabled, there is no ramp or mobile access to the building on the front/side, only a 3 step entrance in the front. The ramp is located in the back of the building. An average sized diner off Route 33, Gus' has a nicely decorated interior and excellent fast service. Sadly that's the highlight of our experience as the food was mostly very bland and average. The chicken sauté I ordered was severely lacking its wine sauce flavor and tasted as if it was stewed in tomato sauce. The vegetables were cut so small it took away from the dish and could have been omitted altogether. The Boston Scrod was (as expected) previously frozen but cooked well and the side dishes were typical diner fare. Menu pricing is moderate and portions are the same. read more

Gus's Diner is a long-standing local spot and it's usually busy, clean, and convenient, which is why my parents enjoy it. Gus himself seems like a nice guy. That said, it's just not a place I enjoy eating. I've been here several times over the years and, aside from the hamburger deluxe (which is actually good), I've consistently found the food to be overly salty and pretty tasteless. I've tried chicken dishes, pasta dishes, and dinner specials, and none of them stood out. One small but frustrating example: a dinner special once came with dessert (Jell-O or chocolate pudding). I asked if I could swap that for a cookie instead and was told no, even though the cookie cost less. It's a minor thing, but diners are usually more flexible, and if the food were better, I probably would've forgotten about it. Accessibility is also worth noting. The handicap entrance is on the side of the building with a fairly steep ramp, and the door is very heavy and difficult to hold open--especially when assisting someone with mobility issues. Overall, Gus's is a busy neighborhood diner, but for me it's not a treat, and I'd rather eat at home. read more

The service was amazing, and the food was not bad but my home fries were a bit cold. But something's been happening with my tummy. Ever since I left Gus's, i've been extremely gassy. My friends and I have to share a bed at the AirBnB, and the smell when you walk into the room smells atomic; almost like it would cause another Chernobyl disaster. When we got to the table we were greeted immediately by our waitress Lauren who brought us our drinks right away. I started with the lobster bisque which was delicious. Creamy with lobster bits throughout. I had the broiled seafood combination for dinner. Shrimps, scallops and flounder broiled perfectly. A very soft 4 mainly because our server was extremely hard working and helpful. The portions are large and reasonably priced but the food, or at least what we had, was more in the 3 range. The place looks kind of dated but it is well-maintained. One of my friend's said the matzoh ball soup broth was too salty and the matzoh ball itself was bland. I agreed about the broth and suggested he add pepper to the matzoh ball. My other friend also had the same soup dish and enjoyed it. I had a tuna salad platter for lunch and while it was large and fresh, both the tuna and especially the cole slaw were bland. Like I said before, our server, and I didn't get her name, was terrific and did everything she could to appease my friend who "hated" his soup. read more

I always like going to Gus's Diner. Great food and service. I became a fairly regular customer for a while. However, I've stopped coming over what may seem a very minor issue. I try to eat healthy. So, for breakfast I never take the home fries that are included with the breakfast. Many places give you options without an upcharge. I was shocked to see that Gus actually charges for sliced tomatoes if you don't take the home fries. Most other dinners don't charge. In fact, 2 other local places will substitute with fruit if you don't take the fries. One place with substitute fruit if you don't the the fries and toast. Anyway I was surprised that they would charge for tomatoes when in surrendering the fries. I thought the waitress made a mistake. No mistake. I'm fact it's programmed into their computer. They couldn't even offer it for free even if they wanted to. As a result I've stopped going there for breakfast. I love the place. I've eaten dinner there often. However breakfast is the meal that we most often eat out. So I've found a few places that we like and no upcharge for tomatoes. And some places, no upcharge for fruit. If they ever decide to not charge for tomatoes I'll probably start enjoying breakfast at Gus's again. So you're probably reading this and thinking what a minor thing to decide not to go back for. It is. In fact so minor that I wonder why they can't just do it for free. I mean s few slices of tomatoes are probably cheaper than a few scoops of home fries. read more

A solid diner option on Route 33 approaching Freehold from the west. Great service, food, and outdoor dining. We came here as a group and we're very pleased during the coronavirus to see how far they separated tables with their outdoor seating. The service was excellent I have to say from the start. I felt very safe with the quality of the facemasks that the staff were wearing as they waited on our table. I ordered a western omelette with cheddar cheese and it was very good! I would say it was 3.5 stars. The breakfast quesadilla was excellent, at least four stars! Really liked the food here. But I also liked that the food was not greasy. This is a big thing, the home fries were not greasy and for me that was a big deal. Very tasty but not swimming in grease. Finally the coffee was also above average so that pushed me to 4 stars! We decided to give it try for Sunday breakfast. 1) Well, first we were seated and the hostess chewed up a staff person in front of us for being 10 minutes late. I get it, you have to reprimand your staff, but call her/him to the back and do it in private!!!! . Do not humiliate the person in front of the patrons. 2) Our server had an attitude The person appeared to had a problem with another staff member, and very visibly upset. I decided on the Seafood New Orleans (see menu pic) with a salad. The salad was not small either! A little balsamic dressing and this was devoured. First time there. Dining alone. No waiting for table even on Saturday night. Had craving for Salmon. Ordered grilled salmon dinner. It was delicious! Nick my waiter was checking to make sure everything was good. Really nice touch that owner and manager(both named John) greeted me at entrance and also came by my table to say hello and make sure everything was ok. Gus's serves up your typical diner fare in a newly renovated environment. We popped in here for brunch one weekday morning. It was rather packed for a random day. I ordered the Tuscany wrap, which was served with a side of fries. It was what I would expect from a diner. Nothing special, on the bland side, but it served the purpose for a quick meal. The fries, however, were quite good. I liked the fact that they didn't salt them. We also ordered a breakfast entree (basted eggs, Canadian bacon, toast and potatoes). Again, as expected. New Year Day breakfast with some of my Fav people! It was a party of 6 of us, and we all ordered various menu items. All of it was yummy! The waffle with ice cream was different. The pancakes, my son said were very good. I got a Monte Bianca omelet that had mozzarella cheese, sundried tomatoes, and mushrooms . . . Really good!! Five stars for the service, maybe two stars for the food. Service was attentive, except maybe for no automatic water refills. We had somebody with a food allergy at the table, and the server went out of his way to check with the kitchen and then be sure the order didn't include anything risky. On the other hand, I wasn't thrilled with the food. The chicken gyro looked like it went through a panini press, and the pita was kind of crunchy. I didn't notice any sauce on it, and the chicken itself (once deconstructed) was on the bland side. The french fries were pretty good, so that was a plus. One of the other people in our party didn't even get halfway through his beef stroganoff ... I didn't ask, but it looked like he didn't enjoy it much either. The chocolate pudding was just ... wrong. I want to like this place more, but the chicken wrap on my most recent visit was just bland. Chicken wasn't juicy at all. Use to come here quite often when I lived in NJ, as there is a big selection of sandwiches/wraps and the prices are reasonable. They have a big page of lunch specials that are about $10. Have the option for soup or salad with the entree. I went with the matzoh ball soup which was pretty good. Big matzoh ball the was tasty, so can't complain there. The chicken wrap came with mozzarella cheese and lettuce in it, but there wasn't much mozzarella cheese. And it's not the real deal fresh mozzarella cheese that you would get at an Italian place. Keep expectations low with the mozzarella cheese. The warp could have also used a little more balsamic dressing. As stated above, the chicken was just dry and not that good. The sweet potato fries were pretty good, as I did enjoy those. The place is quite spacious, with many cushioned booths and tables. Service was on point. It looks like this place is pretty popular with the locals and so there is always a flow of people waiting to be seated. We love this little diner. Live right up the road and it's convenient and the food is always timely and so good! We had come here for a few days when we moved in and our home was still being renovated. We would get breakfast, and they had gluten free bread which was a plus. Their omelets were delicious and very balanced, and their breakfast potatoes are yummy!
