I called Gustavo up to get an estimate on altering a suit. Flabbergasted, I asked, "How are your prices so cheap??" and he responded, "Well, you can pay me more if you would like; no problem!" I took my suit over there on a Saturday morning (BUT beware that he only typically accepts customers via appointment on Saturdays), and was enthusiastic, professional, thorough, and quick. Gustavo is the nicest guy, and he does great work. His prices aren't dirt cheap, but they aren't nearly as pricey as most tailors in Los Angeles. To have a suit jacket and slacks tailored it cost me $65. I gave him a little over a week to work on it since I wasn't in a hurry, and the work was perfect. My slim fit suit fit me like a glove. I felt like I was wearing a suit worth thousands of dollars. He listens to all of your concerns and will give you his professional opinion on fit. He has many celebrity clients, so you know he does good work. He works out of this little hole-in-the-wall apartment, but don't let that turn you away! Rude! I was looking forward to hopefully getting my suit tailored with him given all the positive reviews. So, I called. Here's how the conversation went word-for-word: Gustavo answered: (with a monotone, sounds irritated)"Gustavo tailoring this Gustavo." Me: "Hi, I was hoping to come in today would you be available?" (Now, mind you, I have a customer service background so I was as polite as can be) Gustavo: No, you need to make an appointment, ok, bye. Me: (In my head, WTF) "Ok, can I make an appointment?" Gustavo: "I don't know" Gustavo: (again, monotone/irritated) "when do you want to come in?" Me: "is today possible?" Gustavo: "I don't know I have 3 customers right now" At this point I felt like he didn't want to help me. Long story short, I was able to make an appointment for 4pm today. So I asked him if it was possible to get an estimate. He said, "no it's not possible. If you don't like it you can go across the street. It's simple as that. I have 3 customers in front of me" (Rude tone and did I mention an irritated tone) I bit my tongue and hung up. There's gotta be a better way to say things to potential customers! It's awesome that any business is busy and getting a lot of revenue. I'm sure Gustavo is an awesome tailor. But, please just be a little bit more courteous and nicer to people like me who are just looking to get a simple alteration. Brought in a new suit for tailoring with 9 days to spare. Set up an appointment in the morning with Gustavo, and I was in and out in 15 minutes; he had me wear the off-the-rack suit and took measurements and discussed what we should have done, quoted me for the price and sent me on the way. He had it ready exactly when he said he would, and the alterations were just right. I have another older jacket that I will probably take to him to get touched up. He was professional and quick, I would recommend him! Seems like your best bet is to call for an appointment beforehand, not sure how receptive he is to walk-ins. read more

He is in the process of altering the third dress but the other times I looked great!!! I would come in with oversized dresses and he goes straight to the pinning. To start, I needed to tailor this cheap suit that I bought and turn it into an expensive-looking suit. I needed a new suit for an interview (my usual work outfit is generally fairly casual) but I decided to forgo spending a lot of money on an interview suit in case I did not get the position. It would turn into my unlucky suit or something so I did not want to spend a lot of money on something that I might wear once and give away. Therefore, I needed an excellent (not just good) tailor. My Boo had used Gustavo's services on their suit and raved about it...all the impetus I needed to go to him. Well, I was not disappointed. He tailored the suit to perfection and it really does not look like I only spent $ and not $$$$$$. I do have to warn that he does not seem to have set prices but I thought the price he asked for his service was fair. It was $75 for the whole suit which I thought was fair considering he took in the sleeves, shoulders, and hems. Maybe you can find for cheaper but a good tailor is like a good mechanic: when you find an excellent one, stick with them. I remember there being a cash-only sign but he did accept my credit card. He does have a credit card machine so maybe his cash-only policy was in the past? I would clarify with him when you are at his shop (or on the phone to make the appointment). The one really horrible thing about this place is it is in Westwood with its extremely limited parking. I had to circle a million times to find a spot so be prepared to come early to make your appointment. read more

He's very nice, but his service isn't cheap or great quality - I had to get both pants redone because one hem was so sloppy, the legs were uneven and the hem was ugly so I couldn't cuff them, the other I asked them to make long because I hadn't washed them and they were too short. He redid them both but tried to charge me again when I came back to pick them up. Also, he won't stop talking about how he does a certain celebrity's clothes, literally repeating stories about her every time I go, which I find to be unprofessional. The worst is that he's disorganized, so it takes a while to find my clothes each time I go. Overall, he's an okay tailor, but there are places that are cheaper for the quality. read more

I'm very proud to be the first to review Gustavo's Tailoring. I went to Gustavo upon the recommendation of a fancy aunt of mine who has been using him for years. I brought him my wedding dress thinking that it only needed a slight alteration. He made all these other adjustments that I had no idea I needed and my dress fit beautifully! His turnaround time was about 2 weeks and if I remember correctly, I think he charged me about $120. I recently referred him to a girlfriend of mine. She didn't end up using him because she felt insecure about his broken English. He does have a completely fluent assistant in the shop translating for him, though. I'm telling you...this man can altar anything. If you find a fabulous designer dress on sale, but it's one size too big--buy it! Gustavo will fix so that you'd never know the difference. read more

I was in a crunch! Waited till the last minute to get a dress I was wearing to a wedding tailored. I went in to see Gustavo (since he was referred by a friend of mine) on a Tuesday and he had it ready for me on Wednesday PLUS he repaired my husband's shirt just as quickly. He was charming, very sweet and reassuring. I absolutely love finding people with good energy that do good work!!!! I will definitely be bringing my clothes to him for all of my tailoring! REALLY UPSETTING experience. I met with Gustavo - myself - in person! - to ask if he could close a simple split ( 4/5 inches) by 10am the next day. Absolute deadline. He accepted it at 1230 the day before. He said yes. he was happy I found him, etc. He said- "you see how fast I am?l it will be done! See you!" I came back at 1016 am the next morning and it WAS NOT DONE. NOT EVEN STARTED!! he had not even told his "guy" about it ... in fact, he had no clue what I was looking for. Then It dawned on him and asked me to give him 35 minutes to do it - and he handed it off to some guy in the back as he shuffles paper and makes more false promises to people calling and asking if he can rush things. Ha! Good luck to everyone who needs a quick turn around. so it was not done after he- himself- said it would be. He says he doesn't know how he could have forgotten - but I do !! it's a mess with no schedule and no system. You can tell by just walking into his stupid. Clothes are just hung up on random racks. Maybe organized chaos but this really screwed me. Was counting on someone based on the feedback from Yelp and then this?!!! Terrible and unprofessional. Don't say you can take on a project - big or small if you can't be organized and deliver. Incredibly frustrating. PS- His card literally says One Day Service. Lies!! When I gave him 20 minutes and asked for an update at the 20 minute mark he actually began raising his voice - mentioned he doesn't need more clients and that I should give him a break since it's my first time seeing him. Sadly, I need to retract the 5 star review I posted recently. After having been a customer for 30+ years, Gustavo lost my business. I made an appointment for a Saturday afternoon, discussed in advance the work I needed, and showed up on time. I was told, effectively, he didn't have time to accommodate me because he hadn't taken his usual lunch hour due to a "special project." Having made the effort to drive across town, appointment made and on time, I was understandably put off. There are many wonderful tailors closer to home who seem to value me as a customer, and I'll stick with them. So much for loyalty, I guess. read more

I never would have found this place on my own. It's tucked away up a stairwell on a second floor space off of Westwood Blvd. Altough everytime I go in, Gustavo's space is packed with clothes to be altered and at least one interesting patron chatting him up. I'm a petite taller woman, if that makes any sense, and I take Gustavo a lot of dresses that fit only one area of my body at a time. He always manages to remove zippers, take them in, and replace the lines as if they came in that way. While the space doesn't have frills, you're likely to have some seamless alterations :) read more

My family and I have been going to Gustavo for almost 20 years to get our clothes tailored. He used to do great work, and appreciated our business. Unfortunately however, he has slowly become obnoxious over the years, does bad work and is unapologetic unless you're on TV. This last time, I took him 2 suits to let out a bit. First, he never even remembered which suits I gave him. I had to remind him every time as if I was bothering him for giving him business. I came to finally pick them up and he totally butchered them. I had to go back 3 times because he kept doing the work poorly. When I came to finally pay and just get them back, he tried to charge me for work he didn't even do. When I told him he was wrong he hesitantly agreed, but then demanded the full amount without any recognition of the poor work he had done. When I asked for a measly $5 discount ($130 total) he said ok, but followed that up with "Fuck you and never come back again." I was shocked at how he can throw away 20 years of loyalty. I brought that up, and it only got worse. He kept telling me to fuck off, get out and never come back again. When I left, he told me to have a nice life. I was so shocked that a someone would treat a customer like that. If that wasn't enough, he did it in front of another customer. I've referred countless number of people to him over the years, but his head is too big now for the shit work he does. Too bad, because he used to be a nice guy. So sad. read more

I needed a suit tailored in less than a week, and I was referred to Gustavo. When I walked upstairs into his shop, I noticed the celebrity pictures on the wall, which Gustavo seems very proud of. Gustavo was very friendly and made me feel welcomed. He quickly marked up the suit, quoted me a reasonable price, and promised the suit in 3 days. After many years of searching, I've found the best tailor in town. Gustavo was referred to me by a friend who works on TV and I had always admired how great his suits fit. Well, Gustavo definitely makes your suits and shirts look like they were made for you. It is true that he makes a $300 suit look like a $2000 suit. He's amazing. I had forgotten that on Mondays he isn't open (Instead he's open on Saturdays, which is very convenient for people with a weekend event who need an urgent alteration), so he called me back and was very nice on the phone, even though I was a bother on his day off. So besides being the best at what he does, he is also a very nice person to deal with and his prices are reasonable considering his great talent. Highly recommended. read more

Gustavo Tailoring is hands down the worst! If I could give less than 1 star I would. Gustavo has no business sense. He doesn't have set prices for any of his services even for simple hem alterations. He completely makes up pricing every time a different price. He has completely wasted my time on multiple occasions. I would bring him dresses to alter and after spending 20/30 minutes pinning them he would tell me afterwards that he doesn't have time to work on them even when all that is required is a hem. In my experience it shouldn't take longer than 4/5 days to do a hem. He turned my business away because he said that wasn't enough time. I work in the fashion business and I know the amount of work that is required to complete certain alterations and he honestly exaggerates about how long certain alterations take and does a mediocre job at best. He has ruined multiple expensive pieces of mine due to pure laziness because he always wants to take the easy/fastest way out. I had to wait about a week for an appointment with him but he fit me in and fixed my dress in two weeks!
