We love their Gelato it's so yummy they give generous portions and love that they include a little chocolate waffle straw with it. However the last few times we have been there they haven't had many flavors and they were out of a lot of flavors also. Although the location is great, this place has definitely bitten off more than it can chew. The menu is extensive, which is definitely a cause for concern. My friend and I both ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and the cashier didn't know how much it was, so she had to consult their giant menu. I also ordered an iced vanilla chai latte and my friend ordered a mochaccino. There was definitely nothing chai or vanilla about my beverage, and it actually tasted like coffee. The mochaccino wasn't too bad though. Our grilled cheeses were both falling apart and the cheese was extremely processed, making it hard to eat. The only thing that is getting them 2 stars from me is their wifi because it was actually very good. Perhaps their gelato is good too,!but I'm not sure if I will be back to try it. They should stick to a few items that they know how to make well, instead of many many items they can barely throw together. read more

Wonderful people doing wonderful things. If you like your food to taste like it's home made but taken up a notch this place has the comfort you're looking for when eating out. I have mostly eaten breakfast items here and I love them all. The egg sandwiches and crepes are my faves. I buy coffee here at all hours of the day and evening but they also have beer, wine, soda and other refreshments. Many nights of the week they also have live music. They only serve Santa Cruz Coffee roasters which is organic and pour over so every cup is made to order. read more

I love this place. Often times my hubby and I will get dinner and then come here for dessert. I really enjoy the gelato. My favorite is the lemon but it's a seasonal flavor so I've only been able to enjoy it a couple times. Second fav is strawberry fresca. It's the perfect amount of creaminess with a natural strawberry taste-not your average super sweetened strawberry flavor. It also has chunks of frozen strawberry. I did order a sandwich here before as well and was impressed. I can't remember what I ordered but I think it was Turkey on sourdough. It was delicious. But my favorite thing about this place is the amount of variety it has. There is something for everyone. Normally people call me picky but it's because I don't like the same old stuff. I love being able to look at their menu and just ponder what I would want. I know it's silly but it's what I like. I don't like bacon but if you are a bacon lover they have a ton of bacon items. What could be better then wine, gelato and Americana? This place is awesome! They have happy hours, they make sandwiches, they have huge servings of gelato. They sell an organic wine, from local wineries that's actually GOOD! The place is very kid friendly, except that kids can't play with the you cars. On hot summer days, this place is packed. The service here is hit or miss. The coffee drinks are appropriately priced, but the pastries are far overpriced. The facility itself is quirky, yet grimy and unclean most of the time. Some of the staff is extremely courteous and helpful, but there are a select few that do give attitude to customers and "accidentally" mess up a simple drink (i.e. asking for light ice and having the barista overloading the cup with ice to the brim, etc). We've been to GVA Café a few times for coffee and gelato in the past, and just tried their breakfast today, and the more often I come here, the more I like it. Coffee selection is great with a wide variety from the Brew Bar, and the staff is so friendly that I have to think they would accommodate about any request they could . Both the French toast with eggs and the croissant breakfast sandwich were very good, and much nicer than something you would get at one of the (overrated, IMHO) local breakfast restaurants for a reasonable price. The dessert bar looks like a list of Dessert's Greatest Hits--gelato, canoli, Gizdich Ranch pies, tiramisu, cupcakes...they all look very inviting. Even has free Wi-Fi and you can see your Instagram pics come up on their widescreen if you tag them #gvacafe. Cool place, we will be coming in more often. read more

I love this place! I love the atmosphere of GVA. They always have good music playing and my drinks have always been excellent! I recommend the Mayan Mocha. I also love that they use the Santa Cruz Roasting Company blends, because they are delicious. My favorite is the Feliz Navidad blend. I'm not a fan of the bacon stuffed baked goods though (the lemon poppie seed and bacon muffin in particular). The bacon isn't enhancing the baked goods, just taking away from it. It can also be a little slow if you are ordering food or if someone ahead of you has ordered food... If you planning to take your food to go, I recommend calling in to place your order. read more

Lets get down to basics. They have Good Coffee. If you like coffee they serve Santa Cruz Coffee Roasting which locally is always a good bet (especially if you like a real French Roast)Its fair trade and organic. Nice folks work here, its local and its a cute little downtown hub with pleasant outdoor seating that is bike friendly and pretty quiet for being on a street. Now the decorations...um...overwhelming and not my style. Kinda like a 12 year old boys bedroom with the said boys iphone turned into an obnoxious fad of a flat screen blaring at you even at the counter, which annoyingly has advertisements on it. But all in all I like the place for the coffee and the community vibe. They have tasty gelato too. Good beer selection. I don't know about the food, I come for the coffee. They have an open mic night I happened upon, which was eclectic and fun. Its nice this place has been a coffee/espresso shop in various incarnations for well over 25 years and that is cool. I went here the other day and ordered an iced coffee. The coffee is brewed individually fresh with beans organically grown in the Santa Cruz mountains. It was excellent. I talked with the owner of G&V and she is very pleasent and has some big plans for this quaint little spot. I noticed they carry pies made from local fruit and berry farms. We're here for open mic and got a couple of sandwiches before. Food was bland, latte too strong and the glass they gave me for my OJ was dirty. Overall the place is filthy. The floors and bathroom look as if they have never been cleaned. The table was sticky. I don't even want to think about what the kitchen looks like. I got the medium gelato with 3 flavors: green tea, mint chip, and mango. They were all delicious but I liked the green tea the most. The gelato melted too fast and became watery. The cashier didn't look very happy today. But that's ok. For small, you can have 2 flavors. For medium, you can have 3 flavors. For large, you can have 4 flavors. read more
