We went in a group of 13. So I expected a delay in food coming out. But our service was meh... Small things were annoying, like my friend asked for something as little as a straw and it took him literally 20 minutes to bring it. Food was awesome! I had the Teriyaki Combo with brown rice. Wife had shrimp and sashimi and she enjoyed it. The appetizer Salad was really good, the dressing made it! The most frustrating part was the server never told us we couldn't split the check at the end. You would think with a large party you would state that at the beginning. "Will this be on one check or separate" nope.. So we ask for split checks and see say "sorry, should have told us that earlier, can't do it now." Super frustrating and inconvenient. It's been awhile since I've been to Gyotaku, and I was a little disappointed to be going there. I generally prefer the more upscale dining, but mom and her friend love Gyotaku, and so we celebrated mom's 91st birthday there. They seated us promptly at our reserved time, and our server was very nice. To my surprise food was excellent and tasty. We had the teriyaki and chicken katsu combo, Teri chicken with teriyaki meat, Unagi bowl and Butterfish and tenpura. We also indulged in the oishi dessert. We had their ube cake, matcha shaved ice with azuki and ice cream and matcha green tea ice cream. All were equally delicious!! Prices were good, and we'll definitely return. **I read there was a 90 minute time limit, but they didn't enforce it when we were there. It's a Japanese restaurant so I thought they would have a little more on their menu. What I DID order was probably the best I've had. I ordered their Shrimp Tempura and I swear the picture didn't do it justice. It looked like about 6 regular Shrimp Tempura, but when I got my plate my Shrimp was HUGE and tasty. They gave 5 pieces, but it might as well have been 10 regular ones. They have good sushi. I don't know if they have AYCE, but their sushi is worth it to me. read more

I've been going to this restaurant for years. It's always been on the pricey side but the food was good. NO MORE! Service at lunch was so horrifically slow, my back started hurting from sitting so long. Got the lunch bento box for $23, which consisted of miso soup (pretty good), rice, sashimi, and tonkatsu. The sashimi was okay, the tonkatsu was good but a very small portion for both. Basically spent $25 and left hungry. I don't know why anyone eats here honestly. I won't return ever. read more

This place used to be the go-to family dinner spot 10 years ago. Recently visited again and it was just alright. The sushi roll is pretty big. The eggplant and potato tempura tasted half cooked. The miso salmon and chicken karaage were meh. I can make better chicken karaage. Overall the food is alright. I think it's pretty overpriced for average Japanese food. This is kind of like the standard local Japanese restaurant. Located on King Street, they have a lot of parking. I made a reservation at 5 PM on a Saturday evening, the place is already pretty full. We received a coupon with a second dinner 50% off from the mail, so we want to take advantage of that. We ordered two set dinners, sashimi with tempura, miso butterfish with tempura. The portion of the butterfish is pretty big and the fish is yummy. The tempura is pretty good, I gave it a 8 out of 10. We also order an Okinawa sweet potato pie, it is so good! Overall, the staffs are friendly. We spent about $70 ( tips included) for this dinner. I've previously been here years ago with my family but never really went back until recently for Mother's Day lunch. It's located next to the American Savings Bank on S King St. There's a small parking lot with very narrow stalls. My boyfriend's family witnessed a small accident right in front of them in the lot as this truck tried to park. There's also not much so on really busy days, might need to street park. I got their Mother's Day special bento which came with an assortment of foods: shrimp and vegetable tempura, misoyaki butterfish, chicken karaage, ahi poke roll, inari, and kimchi daikon. Soooo much food! I could barely finish but everything was delicious! The misoyaki butterfish didn't have much miso taste to it which was kind of a bummer. The ahi roll was interesting with some seaweed on top. Refreshing and delicious! The fried foods were all consistently crispy throughout lunch. My boyfriend got the Flaming Ahi Roll and Shrimp Tempura teishoku. He originally said Tonkatsu teishoku but the waiter heard tempura. Whoops. He still enjoyed his meal tho! The flaming ahi roll was very very interesting. It had dried seaweed on top that was salty which did compliment the spicy ahi roll. Strangely enough LOL but definitely on the saltier side. The downside of this place is the steep prices on food. But besides that, the service and quality of the food are great! Have not been to this restaurant in several years and just happened to be in the area. Stopped by for a solo lunch. The menu is diverse, and has a variety of specials, even some exclusive for Seniors 60+ I had the misoyaki salmon / maguro sashimi special, complete with salad and miso soup. It was oishii / delicious. Also, my waiteress Sandy provided the best service! I noticed that they have entire second floor of additional dining seating, much of it can be used for a special event. Had the crispy salmon skin salad, so ono. Would definitely order it again. Also had the agedashi tofu, needed something hot with my salad. It was piping hot and satisfying. For dessert, snow capped sherbet. It was mediocre. They were very busy and looked like the servers couldn't keep up. The manager had to jump in to help out. The staff seemed very stressed and not too happy about being so busy. Too bad because we were there to celebrate an occasion and it did put a bit of a damper on the occasion. The atmosphere was ok. Growing up, I knew Gyotaku's building as Suehiro's. I remember eating there as a kid and all the memories flooded back as my party and I walked up to the second floor of the restaurant. I visited Gyotaku at 5ish and was surprised to see how busy it was! I ordered the chicken katsu early bird special which came with rice, salad, veggie and shrimp tempura, and california rolls. I'm not too sure why, but I was impressed how crispy the katsu was and how moist the chicken was. Just thinking about it is making my mouth water. I can see why they were so busy! What I like about their menu is their use of graphics. You know what you're ordering, but it makes it so hard to choose! Everything looks so good! Our waiter was friendly and service was super fast. I like this location because it is less busy than the Pearl City restaurant. The food and service are the same, which is excellent. This place is alright. I work really close but I've never thought to come eat here. It's nice, looks like a lot of traditional Japanese people come here to eat. We came to eat here during lunch time and there was amor of older Japanese women so they must like it and it must be authentic. I got the spicy ahi bowl looking dish and it was huge! In the picture it looked small. But when I got it omg it was so huge! But the flavor was soooooo good!! I think I'd definitely come back here if I wanted to get this bowl again. I thought this was a Korean bbq place because of gyukaku but it's not. It's more of bentos and bowls. They have lunch specials and deserts as well so I got green tea ice cream which of course was good!! I need to try something else because I definitely played it safe with this meal. Their chicken karaage is the best thing on the menu but only comes as an appetizer, not in a full set size. All of the tempura, tonkatsu, and udon sets are always delicious. Their sushi and other raw fish dishes aren't bad, but other Japanese restaurants on Oahu have better quality fish. If you go on a busy night be prepared for slow service - they sometimes struggle to keep up with orders when the place is packed. read more
