Service rocks! I would have to say that consistently this restaurant in particular has the best service of any restaurant I have been too. I mean even compared to places like Mortons, Lawry's. The people here are so nice! The food is good, but the service makes it taste better. I feel welcome every time I walk into the restaurant. Even when their busy, they have a nice greeting. I took my 2 kids to the restaurant for lunch on Friday and it was a wonderful place to just kick back and enjoy some nice English Style fried fish and chips. It's not the best fish in town, but definitely worth getting if your in the mood for some fish and chips. I would recommend ordering the Captains Special, since you get some Shrimp along with 2 Fish and plenty of chips (Fries). The fish to batter ratio is spot on and you can actually taste the fish. This hidden gem is amazing! I've been eating at the old location in fullerton since i was a kid. After finding out they had an orange location, i always make sure to stop anytime I'm in the area. I love this place. Has been our family go to spot since i was a little girl [im 28 now] and since they were at their first location down the street. If you're gonna bitch about grease dont eat fried food. No duh your food is greasy. Its literally deep fried. If you dont like it make better food options for yourself. We have been coming to this H. Salt for several years and food has always been good, sometimes better than others. Friday, March 1, 2019 we stopped for an order to go and got the fish & chips, 15 pieces of fish, Cole slaw and fries. First of all the fish was all stuck together and when you pulled it out of the tray all the breading came off. The fish was soggy, the minimal amount of fries suited for maybe 2 pieces of fish were cold and hard. Cole Slaw was runny, and the tartar sauce was like watered down mayonnaise. Of course you have to pay extra for a side of tartar sauce which always goes with fish and chips at no charge at other places. Don't know if the fish was old (which, in my opinion was) or not cooked properly. Both of us were sick over the weekend, stomach distress and headaches. My husband called to talk to the manager, but, of course, was not in. He left his number for a call back and 5 days later still NO CALL. This tells me THEY DON'T CARE what kind of slop they serve the public. In my opinion this place needs to be looked into by the county's governing body for the correct way to STORE, REFRIGERATE AND COOK fish properly so nobody GETS SICK! read more

My wife and I enjoyed getting takeout from H Salt 40 years ago in Sacramento. So we decided to revisit old times. The chain seems much reduced and we did not find the food good. My wife reported that her cod (or so it was advertised on the board) was probably not coldwater cod at all but more likely a warmwater farmed fish, slushy rather than flakey and firm. I ordered deep-fried scallops and hushpuppies. The scallops were generous but seemingly prepared in oil that had not been changed for far too long. The taste was off-putting and stayed with me through the afternoon. The hushpuppies were deep-fried so hard that I had trouble driving the prongs of my plastic fork into them. The clam chowder, which we both had, was inexpensive but vague and unimpressive. Parking was easy and there were plenty of empty tables inside at Sunday lunchtime. Tables had salt and pepper, catsup, and malt vinegar. Tartar sauce was a cheap extra. A disappointment and we'll not be back. read more

Its not perfect, the jumbo shrimp were a little bit tough & the condiments were watery in my opinion but it's good enough to satisfy my craving. Things of note: 1) The tartar sauce is 25 cents. From what I heard, it's made from scratch. From what I taste, it's well worth it. This is not your sachet tartar sauce, people. 2) They don't take ATM/CC. But, but, hold on. I overheard the Powers that Be discussing that by 2010, that might be an option. They're studying how much more people would be persuaded into buying if ATMs/CCs are options of payment. 3) If you don't want fries, you can substitute zucchini, mushroom or whatnot as sides. Yes, they're flexible like that. 4) The friendly people of the post office sends coupons to your mailbox. The people at H Salt will give them back to you so you can use them again and again. H Salt is a small store hidden behind a Baskin Robbins, but totally worth the hunt. This H Salt could easily be considered a hole in the wall. Once you walk in the door, it is a little cramp restaurant with a couple tables in the side room. Usually when you walk in to fish and chip places the place smells like oil and fried food, but there is none of that in this place. It is super well ventilated. Now down to the important stuff the fish and chips. For 22.99 (19.99 with a coupon in those mailer things) we got 10 large pieces of perfectly battered fish, 2 helps of chips (aka fries), and 1 large helping of coleslaw. The fish was so delicious and in deep fried to perfection. Their tartar sauce was also very yummy, but just a warning it is 25 cents per helping. The chips were also well made and if true English tradition it comes with vinegar. I'm not a huge fan of coleslaw but my mom and boyfriend enjoyed it, so it can't be bad. I"ve been coming to this H Salt Fish & Chips for years since it was next to Baskin & Robbins in Orange for the longest time. When they closed for a while to move a couple blocks down Tustin St, I suffered major withdrawal symptoms. I was so relieved when I saw the Grand Opening Sign on their new location the following year. First off, the new location is pretty swanky. It's much larger, brighter, nicer facilities, free refills on sodas from the self-serve fountain and it's interior design is cool and inviting. Photographs and collages on the walls of their previous location and kitschy signs heralding the beginning of fish & chips in London I come here at least once a month when I'm in the area (I live in Laguna Niguel) but when I get the craving no other place around OC does fish and chips better. The crunch, the freshness of the fish and the selection: fish, shrimp, hush puppies, veggies and combos make this H Salt my go-to place when I get the hankering. They seem to remember me when I come in. Last time I ordered a side of zucchini & the 2-piece fish combo (instead of fries you can substitute it w/ zukes or hush puppies or sweet potato fries at no charge!) Since I was ordering just for myself they knew I wouldn't be able to handle it all so they asked me if I wanted to make a combo of fish & chips, zucchini and sweet potato fries which was a good call on their part! Went here for lunch today. Menu looked great and had lots of variety. Service was 5 stars...friendly, patient while we decided, and helpful with answers. We ordered the 3 piece fish and chips, hush puppies, jalapeño poppers and fish sandwich plate. Everything arrived HOT! So hot, we had to wait a few minutes to start eating. - The 3 pieces of fish were good, but oily. Nice golden color and light flavor. - Both of our orders of fries were over cooked. A few brown and crunchy ones and for some reason, most of mine were nubs. It's like I got the bottom of the bag. - The fish sandwich was ok. The fish on the sandwich was much smaller than the fish on my 3 piece so it was more like eating a bread sandwich. - The hush puppies were over cooked and dry. They were very dark in color. I'm used to them being lighter and moist. - The poppers had cheddar cheese instead of cream cheese, but had a good flavor. Total was a little over $20 including a drink. read more

Tucked away in a small strip mall near the corner of Tustin Avenue and Walnut Avenue is H. Salt Fish and Chips. With only a couple of locations left in Orange County, it is definitely a hidden gem. This particular shop brings back a flood of childhood memories of when my family first moved to California. It is perfectly situated next to a Baskin Robbins and a laudromat. We would spend a Saturday or Sunday in this strip mall eating lunch at H. Salt and an afternoon snack of ice cream at Baskin Robbins while waiting for our laundry to be done. 10-Piece Fish and Chips are wonderful. The fish fillets are in their trademark triangle shape. The batter is light, similar to a tempura batter, and crispy from the peanut oil. The fish is flaky and tasty. The batter adds a nice flavor to the fish. The chips are nice sized chips, like steak fries. The peanut oil makes it crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Thumbs up with 5 stars! read more
