So my friend Facebooked that she was having H. Salt for dinner and of course that sent me into a tizzy and I had fish on the brain for the entire rest of the day ! I decided to pick this up for dinner last night and hurry home to gobble up the fishy goodness. Mind you, I haven't had H. Salt since I was a good Catholic school girl in '98 and you couldn't eat meat on Fridays during Lent. I arrived and placed my order for the Captain's Combo which included 2 fish 2 shrimp and chips (fries). I opted to change up the fries and get mushrooms instead. I had to wait about 10 minutes and of course that meant I had to pee. I asked the nice Vietnamese man if they had a bathroom, he proceeded to tell me that the building was made in 1968 and the bathrooms were alllll the way in the back behind the kitchen and blah blah blah... SUCKS. I hurried home, opened up my bag of goodies and started with the mushroom skewer -EF ME ! They were the best deep fried mushrooms I have EVER had ! Who cares if they charge for the cocktail sauce, tartar sauce, and I think even the malt vinegar... these magic mushrooms were worth it ! I proceeded to eat the shrimp and was in heaven, then I had a piece of the fish and was thinking it needs a little more seasoning before its deep fried in that delicious light batter. Cocktail sauce is amazing and so is the tartar sauce. Don't wait until Lent - GO NOW !! - OH and don't forget the cash money. NO credit cards ! read more

Before i start my review... it might be noteworthy to know the restaurant has moved from its original location. It is now 1 block north of the given address (on the other side of walnut) on the right. Nice little greasy spoon tucked away in Orange. Overall the food was good, but not quite what you'd expect from a place proclaiming itself to be an English style Fish n Chips place. It's a slight step up from Captain D's or Long John Silver's but falls a bit short and greasier of the fish n chips of more sustenance like those of The Olde Ship in Fullerton. The decor of the place is not anything special (so maybe not the greatest of date places) but it's a definitely a place worth trying if you want some inexpensive but decent fish n chips. I went with a friend and we split a big ben (4 pieces of fish and chips) and some hush puppies. The fish was good but a bit greasy, and the hush puppies were really tasty (but again, greasy). But be warned that you have to pay 25 cents for some tartar sauce. I think 3 1/2 might be around right for the food, but i bumped it up to a 4 based on the service. I used to go to the H. Salt in Fountain Valley when I was younger until it closed down. This place is my favorite fish and chips place because of how light the batter is and the fish is always cooked perfectly. The reason for not 5 stars is because the last few times at this Orange location has been a bit oilier than usual--seems like then oil isn't being changed as often as it should, however that won't stop me from coming because no other fish and chips place even comes close! Another thing I really like about this place is that you can substitute the chips for pretty much any other side they have there (I like to sub for either cole slaw or fried zucchini, my husband likes to sub for their onion rings). They do charge additional for sauces; that's probably due to it being a hole in the wall kind of place and any profit they can make would help. read more

New Location...THANK GOD! Man they were in the crummiest location for nearly 30 years! This shop is much bigger and nicer, parking still bad. Today I had the special - Fish, chips, zucchini and cole slaw. I like the fish here always have. The zucchini and fries are very good too. Try the fried clams as well. The grilled stuff I've never tried. Cole slaw...give it a miss. Keep in mind the food takes a while and it comes out really HOT! They only take cash. The fish comes with a small side of tarter sauce which has always been plenty for me. They charge for extra tarter sauce. Vinegar is on all the tables. I don't expect 5-star seafood here, and therefore I am always pleased with the fried fish and shrimp - consistently tasty (and greasy, to be honest), as are the chips. I haven't had Fish and Chips in so long, but luckily I was around this place and while driving towards the freeway, I honed in on the business sign from the street via peripheral like a bald eagle on a lone swimming salmon, and found myself in what felt and looked like a cozy olde english pub. Time machine part #1. I ordered a combo which consisted of 3 fish planks and chips. He asked me how many tartar sauces I wanted and I told him one, and asked for some malt vinegar as well. The cashier said the malt vinegar comes w/ any order. Honestly I have no recollection of what this costs me, I believe it was 10 or under. After I sat down, I was reading the reviews and realized I could substitute mushrooms for the fries at an additional cost. I promptly jumped out of my seat to inform the cashier that I wanted shrooms instead of fries. I was getting ready to pay for the difference, but he told me that it was all good! Wow, awesome service! Food was ready shortly after, the owner brought it over to my table with a squeeze bottle of my favorite condiment, malt vinegar! Everything was all good except for the fact that this huge obese and rude guy sat at the table directly in front of me, trying to initiate conversation with me and telling jokes that were borderline racist! Next time someone does that I swear I'm just gonna pick up my food and move to another table. But back to the food...shrooms were fried and came with ranch, really good. Only words I have ever heard to describe fried fish is "flaky, crisp", which is exactly what this fish was. Their prices are reasonable, but their service is very slow and the quality of the food isn't very good. Napkins and plastic silverware must be asked for and are not brought with the food or available for customers. They charge $0.25 for tartar sauce. I give the young lady at the front with the piercing a "5" she was the best young person ever. Great attitude and great personality. I have looked high and low and these young people are so lame....oops I forget their parents made them get a job or their parents know someone who runs the establishment. I died & went to fried food heaven!!! Tried the fish & chicken, both were great (if you like fried food). The chicken had a hint of ground pepper, just enough to give it a Southern fried taste. First time here. The thing I really loved about this place was the temperature of the food. I loved how it was made fresh to order. Like when I say fresh, I mean fresh from the fryer. The food was super hot and crispy, I actually burned my tongue because it was so hot and crispy (that's how I like my fried food). Even the fries were super crispy (I hate rubbery "under the heating light" fries). I had the 1 fish, 1 shrimp (which was uniquely cut in a circle), and chips combo and tartar sauce. It was delicious.
