I was craving some fish & chips, found this place close by. I walk in and 2 tables were taken with people dining in, 2 other customers ordered take out. I look over the menu and spot something tasty. 2 chicken & 2 fish with chips. I see I can add coleslaw. The 1 guy working looked not so happy & tired, there was no welcoming. Shortly after I order an older man appears to help. Food came out at good time. Grabbed a strip I wasn't sure if it was chicken or fish, no real flavor. I find out it was the chicken. Tore into a piece of fish, the batter began to peel completely off. Fish was better than the chicken but not impressed. The ends of the fish were tough. Maybe this was reheated in a microwave instead of fried? All the chips were no good and very little. I think this place possibly reheats food. Instead of cooking fresh. I do remember hearing a microwave button being pushed, but I thought nothing of it, maybe another persons food. The best thing was the coleslaw!!!!! You can tell it is fresh! Good consistency with the shredded cabbage & flavor. I ate the whole thing and left the main portions of chicken, fish & chips for the trash. Probably won't be back for a 2nd try, unless I needed good coleslaw. Maybe this was just an off day? Maybe the young guy working had a bad day? Was this food fried fresh? Probably the best fish and chips I've ever had. I love the batter on the fish and how it's light airy and crispy. I get the combo and switch out the fries for fried zucchini and it's truly delicious. The zucchini is fried in the same batter as the fish so it's perfectly crispy. Wait a few minutes to let the zucchini cool though because if you eat it right away, it's super hot in the inside! Every time I've come in, there's no line or anything so orders come out fairly quickly. I have been happy in the past with H Salt Fish & Chips but recently I have been very disappointed. The fish fillets have become very thin. They taste like the oil being used to fry is old and tastes horrible. The fries also taste terrible. The overall appearance of the cooks and server could do with a clean up. I am on the hunt for Orange County's best fish and chips and this is definitely in my top 5. It's a bit of a hole in the wall which is very charming in and of itself. Just imagine yourself on a wharf or pier somewhere on the coast and you enter a simple shop just to eat some good o'l fish and chips. The fried fish and chicken are very good, fried clams are good too. The seasoning is perfect, salt level perfect for me. Haven't tried the scallops and other stuff. Not a fan of steak fries but that's what they use here. I dont like the fries/chips but the fried fish is great!! That first bite fresh out of the fryer with their chilled tartare sauce is just heavenly! (Wait a few minutes so you dont burn yo mouth) l. They make everything fresh to order so there is nothing pre-fried and sitting around. You have to park in the back through a small side street and there is construction in the front in another shop. They also have seating table areas where you can eat it on the spot. When I bring it home and I can't finish it, I put it in the fridge and the next day I warm it up in the air fryer for about 5 minutes on 300 and then a few minutes on 400, so it doesnt dry out the fish and is still crispy on the outside again. H Salt Esquire Fish & Chips is a favorite of mine! Prices are fair for the quality and quantity you get. Everything here is deep fried to perfection- crispy, crunchy, and moist/tender on the inside. The fried fish is flakey and moist on the inside with the best crunch on the outside and is good on its own or with some malted vinegar (tartar sauce is extra charge). The shrimp is actually two pieces of shrimp joined together and again, deep fried to perfection. Substituting the chips for veggie sides is no extra charge and I LOVE the deep fried zucchini! The zucchini is super juicy while the outside batter stays crispy - how do they do that? It took a little while to get our food, but it was made to order so I understand and appreciate how fresh it was. Do yourself a favor, stop ordering fish & chips at a big box restaurant that randomly has it on the menu and come here! read more

We like to order the family pack 16 pieces of fish & chips, add on some zucchini fries on the side & don't forget the chicken tenders for the kiddos and you got yourself a delicious meal enough to feed up to 8 people! Service is super quick and efficient, too! We like to call ahead and place our order so it's ready for pickup once we get there. Fyi: The restaurant is located in a small strip lot so parking can be tricky especially during busy meal times. The fries tasted old or seemed to have been cooked in old grease. When I was growing up in Southern California, the ubiquitous fish and chips restaurant was H. Salt Fish and Chips. It was "the place" to go if you wanted an authentic English fish & chips experience. Over time, it became harder and harder to find these stores, to the point where I only know of one - THIS one! - located in Orange, California. Having not been to H. Salt for a decade or more, but having a hankering for fish & chips, I found the store on Tustin around 2:30pm, grabbed an empty parking spot (there were plenty!) and headed in for what I hoped was going to be a good meal. After looking over the menu, I settled on a Captain's Combo, which I ordered with fish, chips, shrimp, extra tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. It was just me and the crew, since it was past lunch hour, so finding a seat was easy. When the food showed up, it was AWESOME! The fish was crispy, the fries were fresh, and the two shrimp were butterflied and HUGE! I did only get one tartar sauce - which was tasty and enough for both pieces of fish - and the cocktail sauce came in a bottle. The sauces were BOTH great! The "chips" were crinkle-cut, and clearly freshly made. Two pro tips: 1. Don't try to eat the food right away; it has been freshly made, which means that it is easily as hot as the face of the sun. 2. Hitting the place after the lunch rush guarantees you a parking place, personal attention, and a table with an excellent view of the parking lot. This place is easily one of the better fish and chips places in So. Cal. If you're in Orange, drop by - the food is GREAT! read more
