Found this place by accident, in area for appt. Have been an H.Salt lover for life. This location goes beyond the normal H. Salt menu. Crab cakes, catfish, clam chowder with veggies, yum. I got a few pieces of fish, some hush puppies, some medium shrimps, and of course some of their famous chips (steak fries). Malt vinegar and cocktail sauce was free, but you will have to purchase the homemade tarter sauce for small $.50 or large $1.30. Because they are now a small family owned type of restaurant they do charge 4% for the use of credit card. Honestly though, the food is good enough to make you forget that. They have plastic visors up for protection and the establishment is very clean. Anyways, back to the food. I got my food to go. The owners are so gracious and kind. The food was packaged very well and they even made sure it was OK to put my Hush puppies in the same bag as my shrimp. Thoughtful. Most places would have just put where they want and let me deal with it later. I ended up spending about $21. It was so worth the price in my opinion. The parking lot is awfully small. Oh, after thought. You can call ahead but I didn't. When I went at 5:30pm on a Monday, my meal was cooked fresh and ready to go within 6min and you can watch the owner cook it too. so I just tried this place using DoorDash, and I have to say it's really really good! I couldn't tell you about the ambience because I've never been there... But the fish and chips is legit. I used to live in Glasgow, Scotland and they take fish and chips very seriously over there... This was just right and I'm sure my former neighbors would approve. My wife lived there even longer than I did, and she said the only thing missing was having it wrapped in a newspaper! They give you the tartar sauce but more importantly they don't forget the vinegar. The portions are huge and reasonable for Southern California price wise. May be a little pricey for Scotland... This is my new go to For my fish and chips fix- takes me back... but without the rain! Also it's paper and cardboard for wrapping which is nice given the trend towards plastic everywhere. It had been almost 20 years since I had been to an H Salt. There was a 15-20min wait but it was worth it. We got the fish, shrimp and chicken...it came with chips (french fries). You can substitute chips for any one side. We substituted on of the chips for onion rings. They were pretty amazing! Best part, we had leftovers (and if you heat up in the oven at 500 degrees for 5min as they recommend). everything tastes just as it does new! What a find! Use to go to H Salt regularly back in the day and thought they had all disappeared. It was great to walk into the store with that traditional fish frying smell. The batter is the closest I have come across to traditional English fish batter. It's crispy and holds the malt vinegar really well to add to the taste. Meals are cooked fresh to order. Long John Silver doesn't hold a candle to this place. The fried shrimp & tilapia are amaze balls!! I highly recommend coming in with an empty stomach and trying a bit of everything. Growing up in Santa Ana in the 70s, my family would eat at Sir Fish & Chips (Edinger & Fairview) as often as possible. As the 80s dawned, Sir went out of business. Over the next 40 years, we would find "similar" places, but nothing that really made us feel at "home". Until now. H. Salt has the menu options, the flavor, the taste, the texture (great crunch!), and the portion sizes to make us feel home again. I love the way they flayed their shrimp to make it easier to fry and crunchier to bite into. Fish was great and the steak fries too. I ate in on my experience so I have no clue what it is regarding the sauce prices people are talking. I got all mine for free, but be forewarned about to go sauces, I guess? This is my first and last time coming to this place. I understand that places will charge extra for sauces, but the charge needs to be consistent across everyone who comes into this establishment. The lady in front of me received her order and asked for a couple more tartar sauces, and the cashier happily gave them to her, NO CHARGE. Even after the lady offered to pay for them, the cashier said it was fine. When I went to pay, the cashier said that they charge for tartar sauces and I was fine with that, even after witnessing her give away 2 tartar sauces a few seconds ago. I asked for the large, but somehow was given a small. I don't know if it's a thing not to receive napkins and cutlery for a to go order, but every place I've been to gives napkins and cutlery. Are people expected to eat this food by hand and wipe there hands on their shirt and pants? This was for my lunch break and it looks like I won't be eating until I can find at least a few napkins. read more

Has been coming here for 10 years, since they were in the old location. I always order the same thing, two fish without chips, and received consistently good fish after all these years. Well i think the fish is shrinking a bit, but oh well, may be it is good for my waist afterall. I pair it with small tartar sauce (for extra $.25) and Caesar salad from Trader Joe. Always for to go.
