Egg rolls, pork & shrimp spring rolls, bun bo hue, and grilled pork banh mi
    Angelica L.

Rating: 3.8/5 [delivery] Grilled Pork Banh Mi ($9.14): The French bread was actually really good, tasty, and perfectly toasted. The butter helped elevate this sandwich. Pate was there but more subtle. Grilled pork flavors were not bad. Spicy Beef Noodle Soup ($14.95): This does not taste like Bun Bo Hue and lacked the satay, lemongrass, and shrimp paste flavors. It also did not come with banana blossoms. The broth is spicy but lacks depth of flavor, even after I squeezed in the whole lime. I did not like the broth at the beginning but it grew on me as I sipped on it more. Two Egg Rolls ($6.90): These tasted good and were crispy. The egg rolls were stuffed with pork, shrimp, mushroom, and veggies which were balanced in portion and taste. The sweet and sour dipping sauce was okay. Two Pork and Shrimp Spring Rolls ($6.90): Not good. There was too much vermicelli noodle, and the spring rolls did not taste very fresh. The pork and shrimp were dry as well.

I had egg rolls and kung pao chicken. Egg rolls ok but not hot, like they had been sitting in a warmer. The chicken in the kung pao was dry, like it had been cooked before being thrown in the stir fry. There was little sauce, and the rice was overcooked and dry. The food wasn't as good as it looked in the photo.

I so miss this restaurant being north. They used to have a store north a few years ago but it closed so the only one is south, which we rarely get to since we don't go south. My favorite dish is the spicy Hai Ky dish with chicken and noodles. So darn good and boy they load you up with chicken. Just love that dish, it is so filling so tasty and not too spicy to take away from the overall dish. Please consider coming North Austin again! I would be a very regular customer!

    "Shrimp" spring roll

Ordered shrimp spring rolls and they were big but each only had 1 small shrimp in them. Super disappointing. I also got spicy beef noodle soup and pad Thai. The soup was bland, there was no kick to it whatsoever and the sliced beef was dry. The pad Thai wasn't "bad" it was just different from any other pad Thai I've ever had before. No, I guess it actually was bad. Highly unenjoyable experience overall. I did a pick up order.

It's a small mom and pop shop, simple decorations, but very authentic feel. Service is excellent. The broth is so delicious and a level 4 out of 10 spicy. Adding a couple of lime squeezes will bring out the perfect balance in flavor. No need to add any extra seasonings.

No-frills, smaller spot in south Austin. It's been on my list, but I don't think I'd come unless I was craving pho and I was already in the area. The pho dac biet was a bit small in noodle portion and salty in soup $12. I liked the cold vermicelli dish (~$14) more, and loved the char on the pork, as well as generous portions of meat in both dishes. Egg rolls were okay. Quick service.

It's always the hole in the wall Vietnamese restaurants that absolutely rock your world. It's a rule in my household that Asian places with 3 stars are the best places. And this hits all of those spots. The pho was so flavorful and not to mention cheap. It was a small place but the vibe was on point. Waitresses were nice and the food came out quickly.

Tea for two people, two full sized pots . You might need to clarify one pot of tea, two cups.

By far one of my favorite places. The staff is incredible and the menu is nearly flawless. I visit Hai Ky at least four times a week.

The standout was the shrimp pancake that had a really great texture and flavor. The snow crab ball had a strange texture with shrimp surrounding the snow crab claw. The Chinese Sticky Rice is always a favorite. Also ordered the Truffle Egg Fried rice and Birds Nest with Seasonal Vegetable. The Truffle rice is so flavorful like a flavor explosion in your mouth. The Birds Nest is made with fried potato shreds which contain the a variety of vegetables including cauliflower, peppers, mushrooms and asparagus. The nest is also edible and has a crunchy texture. The place reminded me of Ling Wu in the Grove area because the decor looked similar. Maybe they are owned by the same people? Firstly, I was impressed with the fact they had a FREE parking garage nearby since this is in the downtown area and next to Whole Foods. It took me a bit to find it as I'm directionally challenged, but I did and was just running a bit late. We really enjoyed the food and cocktails. I got the Singaporean noodles, a mezcal drink, and a sake. The serving size was big so I had plenty to take home. We shared many of the other dumplings and dim sum items. Everything was very good! The place wasn't too crowded so after we paid our bill we sat around for a while longer to chat and catch up. Usually someone would come by to see if we needed or wanted anything further, but no one did so we kept chatting and left. I'm happy to know of a central location with easy parking as a future place to meet people. I wish they had a happy hour because the bill for 3 of us was unexpectedly higher than usual.

We had the Pork Sticky Rice Shumai, Pork Xiao Long Bao, Shrimp & Pork & Chive Steamed Dumplings, Eggplant & Minced Pork Noodles, and Pineapple Fried Rice. Everything was flavorful and satisfying, and ordering several different dishes was definitely the way to go. The dumplings were the highlight, especially being able to try several different styles and fillings. The Xiao Long Bao had that comforting soup-dumpling experience you are looking for, while the shrimp, pork, and chive dumplings offered a completely different flavor and texture. The sticky rice shumai was another nice variation. The Eggplant & Minced Pork Noodles added a hearty, savory dish to the meal, and the Pineapple Fried Rice provided a nice balance with a little sweetness. Overall, Dumpling World is a great choice if you enjoy dumplings and want enough variety to explore beyond just one or two traditional options. Good food, plenty to choose from, and definitely a place we would visit again.

Having grown up in a household where dumpling making and preparation were treated as a meditation…read moreon perfection, I've been incredibly pleased to see Austin seriously upping its dumpling game. While I've yet to find a Korean joint with a proper Korean mandoo on offer, Chinese varieties are thriving with the likes of Julie's Noodles, Steamies, Lin's and, the subject of my review, Dumpling World. Definitely don't expect ambiance here. After suffering the Triangle's persistent lack of parking, you'll walk into this place and find a really spare, almost utilitarian set up that screams "we mean business." They definitely mean business. I've probably been here a good 5-6 times, and have tried almost everything on the menu. Soup dumplings shine -- my daughter refuses to eat them anywhere else -- and their recently introduced thumb buns, which I think are fried mini soup dumplings, just ooze flavor. More traditional half-moon dumplings, no matter your filling of choice, steamed or fried, never disappoint. Don't ignore the non-dumpling items too. I don't know what the seasoning is in their green beans, but it's ridiculously delicious. You'll never look at green beans or haricot vert the same way ever again. Good, but unremarkable, are the soups and stews. Better to get those at other Chinese eateries. I don't mean to dissuade anyone from those, but did you really come to a place called Dumpling World to eat anything but dumplings? It gets crowded here at times so I recommend trying on a weekday evening. Uniformly, whether it's packed or slow, service is quick and courteous. With dumplings this good, it's clear that humility is one of the key ingredients to their consistency and quality.
