We visited HakkaChow on 2-5-2020 and the food was really delicious! We started with the Hakka Zen Shrimp and they were so delicious and perfectly sauced. Then we had two entrees, the honey peanut chicken and the hot garlic salmon. Both dishes were really delicious and very satisfying. HakkaChow would have gotten five stars for the excellent food, however the waiter Lovell was horrible! Lovell took forever to greet our table, to bring drinks to our table, and basically to do any required tasks! Luckily someone from the kitchen brought our appetizer, entrees, and deserts to our table. This server appeared to be zoned out in his on world and should not be dealing with the public. read more

This place has the best chinese in town. The portions are good, and the sauces taste homemade. I have had seet and sour chicken and general tso's. Chicken is good quality. the dumplings are so good! The atmosphere is nicer, I would rather pay for chinese here than get take out and it is about the same price nowadays! Beef and broccoli is also really good. The server was awesome. My husband had a special fried rice with no onions, peas or carrots. He enjoyed that. It was still hot, even though it was wrapped with plastic & set o under a heat lamp for 6 minutes. I watched & timed it. I could see the area. I ordered sashimi/sushi. Which was well below par. The fish(tuna,salmon, squid, escolar, & snapper) was like water & it still had pieces of ice. It all tasted the same; WATER, no flavor. I tried to order some eel & it wasn't edible. This was Sweet Alice's choice for her birthday luncheon, and it turned out to be a rather disappointing and frustration experience, that encompassed both service and food failures, made palatable only by virtue of the company. We arrived at Noon, and there were already 5 or 6 tables occupied, so I guess the opening time is an estimate. We were left to our own devices for a while, then a manager type person came by to take our drink order, and finally our waitress appeared. We placed our order, and I watched as she went to 2 more tables (one with 9 people) and took all the orders before taking any to the kitchen for processing. It was becoming obvious that the wait staff was under-staffed and under pressure, turns out there were only two on the floor taking orders. The kitchen also was under stress since it took 25 minutes to get a single appetizer, and another 30 minutes to get our entrees. We watched as tables who arrived well after us,. received their appetizers and entrees well before we did - and the couple beside us with 2 small children experienced the same treatment, and even incorrect items delivered to their table. The food, once received, was not nearly at the quality level we'd experienced previously there was still some good here, but much diminished. The Korean Seafood Pancake ($9.95) was well sized, as it should have been considering the price, but it was very doughy, with a hint of crispiness only at the very edges - this dish appeared to simply be very under cooked (stress on the kitchen?). The texture and the doughy taste completely masked the taste of the seafood - which was very nice, once extracted the mass of the pancake, especially the small shrimp. The Kim Chi Noodles Soup ($13.95) which had provided such an explosion of sharp, fresh tastes before, was incredibly bland, and simply dull - the "spicy broth" was just broth, and the small amount of kim chi lacked any flavor. The house made chili oil helped, but this dish, with these ingredients, should stand on its own. The Salt & Pepper Prawns ($15.95) was another major disappointment - the shrimp lacked freshness, and the coating was soggy, nothing remotely crispy. The Baby Bok Choy was excellent, but that is an expensive dish just to come away liking the cabbage. The Szechuan Beef ($14.95) was an excellent dish, and remains one of my favorite versions of this classic. The Indian Chicken Curry (a relative bargain at ($7.95) was also very nice, and this is an authentic Indian curry, with a nice spice level, and lacks the cloying sweetness brought on by the use of coconut milk in so many curries. The wait staff, and most likely the kitchen as well, seemed very understaffed and it showed in every respect. People with knowledge of the situation (to use a mainstream media cop out) indicated this has become a normal thing, especially on weekends. This is too far to come, and too much to spend, to accept such poor quality of food and service. Odds are not good for a return without some indication that things have changed. I was a little concerned before we came because of some recent, negative reviews from several sites, which seem to have basis in fact. read more

Two families met here for lunch on a Sunday as it is a halfway point from the mountains and the capital of NC. Everyone enjoyed their food - sushi, hibachi, Thai. . . no complaints. The creme brûlée (cinnamon) was amazing. It has an attractive interior and the wait staff did the best they could. They made a newly turned 16 year old very happy on her birthday. This place is buzzing, even on a Sunday evening, so just be aware that there may be a wait, even on Sunday. Side note: I did notice that the floors are a bit sticky. The hostess was lovely and very friendly and the wait staff was friendly considering how hard they were working and running around. Most of them were sweating from what I saw. I got a couple of the sushi rolls and they were great, make sure you ask for the sauce (soy, siracha mayo) you want when you order them to streamline the process. The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is for the atmosphere and the waiter. We had not been here since before Covid and it wasn't that great then but thought maybe it would be better. We ordered the Thai Chicken. Only one sliver of zucchini as far as vegetables, should have had mushrooms, onion and zucchini. Got the fried rice not knowing there was a $4.00 upcharge. And the fried rice is actually rice with a ton of soy sauce on it. 2nd dish was Singapore noodles, very bland, not enough curry, chicken that was tough, chewy and tasted old. Had to pick it out of the bowl. The shrimp was weird. I mixed the brown sauce from the Thai Chicken to flavor it. The Singapore Noodles from Mr Lu's is 10 X better. Ordered the hot chili oil which BTW is .50 cents and was told that upfront. No problem but really? The Mai Tai which I was really looking forward to had a good flavor but very little booze. Kimchi fries are outstanding! The rest of the food is overall just plain. But the kimchi fries are so good that I would go back there just to eat that one! Dinner here was a great experience!! There was quite a long wait to get in (45 mins) without a reservation on a Friday night, but after eating here I understand why. Everything was fantastic from the food to the service to the atmosphere. I wasn't sure what to expect because the restaurant is nestled in a multi-purpose office-complex type building. However, this was one of the best meals and restaurant experiences I've had in a while. The Coconut Curry soup was probably one of the best I've ever had! It was bursting with flavor - the perfect balance of savory and sweet. Several people at our table order the wonton soup. I tried a bite and it was also very good. Then, the Singapore Rice Noodles were AMAZING!! I ordered a side of chili oil and it took the recipe to the next level! Everyone at the table loved their food. The servers and staff are very friendly and obliging to create a great dining experience. The atmosphere/decor are really cool as well. Food has always been pretty tasty - and I enjoy coming here because there are a lot of options to choose from. Nothing too special, but in this area where good Asian food is scarce this is probably one of the better ones. Also, the food tends to be on the spicier side. You know your own limits, trust them. I came here during the pandemic and wow this place was truly amazing. The menu is huge so they have so much variety and so many customer and resturant favorites!! I came with three others and we all had a hard time deciding what we were going to eat because everything looked and sounded so good. I ended up getting a green tofu curry and my bf got one of the restaurants most popular meat dishes and we were both 100 percent pleased and satisfied. The tofu was cooked so well and I am very picky about how I like my tofu cooked. They had good drinks specials on a Monday but we decided no drinks for us. I did see that they had good drink and meal specials scattered throughout the week as well. The anterior decoration and over all around vibe inside is very modern and aesthetically pleasing. I've gone here several times and I've never been blown away but it's good enough to keep going back until I find my dish. Almost everyday they have a drink special and on sundays they have BOGO 1/2 off sushi. I'm not sure if it's better to just go with the daily sushi special but if you want two speciality rolls, it's better to go on a Sunday. The sushi was good. One of my rolls was so piled up with extras it was like two rolls and I had to eat the topping first. I feel like this is just over the top for sushi. I wanted something simpler but nothing jumped out to me like the volcano roll did and I decided to do it and a Boston roll. The curry coconut soup is really good too for an appetizer. The lettuce wraps are decent. The Kobe beef dumplings are simply over priced and not that amazing. The inside is beautiful and sleek. I probably enjoy the inside and ambiance more than anything. As someone who grew up in Asia, I was not impressed. My wife had the Singapore Fried noodles and I had the Chow Fun. The Chow Fun was okay. It could do without the celery. My wife actually liked her dish. For me however, as someone who grew up eating Singapore Fried noodles from the age of 5...it tasted nothing like it should've. Was visiting W-S from Raleigh and wanted to pick up some food to go. Food from HakkaChow was awesome. We got dinner for four and we were all pleased. Will definitely go there again. Two of us are on plant based diets and we got the eggplant and the mapo tofu. Both were delicious. The place looked quite nice too. I would like to dine in next time. I've been to HakkaChow several times before for chicken, noodles, or rice dishes. This time I went for sushi, taking the waiter's recommendation of the Tropical Sea Dragon roll. Though the roll was interesting, the combination of flavors was just "okay." I also got a side of lo mein, and most of the noodles were over cooked or burnt. However, our waiter was wonderful, attentive, and efficient. Other visits to Hakka Chow have been more enjoyable, but this time, the food was pretty lackluster. The dumplings were a little thick and doughy but good. I had the vegetarian curry which was delicious.. Someone else in our party had peanut chicken. The portion sizes were very generous. I've had HakkaChow saved to my bookmarks on Yelp for awhile now and finally went and now I know what I've been missing! Absolutely loved it! I had the Crunchy Spicy Tuna roll that was filled with the best spicy tuna, topped with eel, shallots, garlic and crunchy goodness, then topped with a drizzle of homemade sauces. I also had just a simple salmon avocado roll to balance off the richness of the other roll. The Spiced Calamari appetizer was delicious. The calamari are fried in a light batter and cooked perfectly. The waiter bless his heart was not really hitting on much...however when I couldn't decided if I wanted steamed or fried dumplings he suggested half & half.
