My friends wanted to try out the smore thing, I wasn't really up for it so I decided to get a drink. I'll start with the drink. The drink was bleh. It didn't even taste like an alcoholic drink. It barely tasted like anything honestly. I couldn't taste the juice nor the alcohol. It looks cute but that's literally it. It was expensive and so not worth it. The smores were...just smores. Presentation was decent with the little fire pot thing. But other than that it's just crackers and marshmellows with hersheys chocolate you can get at walmart...I suppose this would be a cute idea for a date with your ol lady but I wouldn't spend the money on this honestly. I must admit the ambience and interior itself is pretty fun and cool to hang out in. Definitely a place I'd go to read a book, catchup with a friend, or do some school work. Coffee by day, bar by night almost never works out. Halcyon is a significant exception to this rule. Located in the old Ruta Maya Coffee house location on 4th Street (a prime location with an absolutely drop dead gorgeous old building to work with) ... this is a great place to hang out at any hour of the day or night. Austin has a zillion wonderful coffee places ... and most are pretty wonderful. But Halcyon has carved a pretty unique niche out for itself in the bar scene at night - and one I really like. This is a mixed drink establishment rather than a beer house ... which is a plus in my book where cocktails are king. Since it is a coffee place by day ... coffee drinks, hot chocolate drinks and alcoholic dessert drinks are the house specialty. (Though they mix plenty of regular non-coffee non-dessert cocktails - and keep a large stock of top grade whiskeys, spirits and flavorings to make that possible.) Very few people order beer, and the bartenders are mixing mixing mixing ... always a good sign. As mentioned above, the coffee and dessert drinks are the house specialty. Dessert/coffee drinks are a skill test for the bartender. Done wrong they are either cloyingly sweet or acrid from the alcohol edge. Done right - which happens rarely ... you die and go to heaven. Halcyon does them extremely right. Special kudos go to their milkshake drinks. Milkshake making is another lost art ... with bad ones (the rule) being either bland from too much dull ice cream ... or fake tasting from too much syrup. Put booze in them and there are so many ways to go wrong .... Halcyon makes a wide variety of complex flavors - they are sweet ... they are potent ... they have incredibly deep and intense flavors ... the flavors stay consistent (and extraordinary) all the way through the milkshake ... the chocolate rush totally sets you up for all of pleasures of your happiest moments as a little kid the buzz sets you up for all of the pleasures of adulthood later in the evening ... It does not hurt that there are no TVs with stupid sports events - and no stupid music --- making this a place you can actually have a conversation. (Why do people go to bars to watch the same TV shows they can see at home?) Comfortable furniture, a marble bar and good decorating doesn't hurt either. So the venue matches the quality of the beverages. So If I want a treat ... this is where I wanna go for my treat!!!! SMORES!!!!!! God I didn't know I loved smores so damn much but when I can have smores in the comfort of coffee and downtown??? God I'm excited for them all over again! My friends and I are in a Skeeball League (I know..I'm so legit it's redic!) and it goes down every Sunday at Lavaca Street Bar. So after a bit of ball play I'm jonsin' for a coffee and some smores in the winners circle at Halcyon. It's pretty cool. The seating they have there ranges from small tables, cushioned chairs, and then these 2 lounge areas that are sectioned off and full of pillows and what not. These are the winners circles and where you can usually find me Sunday nights. So the reason they don't get 5 stars is their hit and miss coffee. First time we went...I couldn't stomach the coffee...it was SO bad. So bitter and ill prepared. My friends iced coffee was good so I let it slide...and the smores were craze amaze good so I definitely forgave the disgraceful coffee. I had been seeing this place every time I went to downtown or I even parked a few times in front of it. But, never got around to go. This time, it was SXSW time, and we figured even though we weren't participating on the event, it would be great to just join the crowd in downtown businesses. So, we went, and I must say that I was surprised by the yumminess of the drinks. The ambiance is pretty cool too, but the place was busy packed. So, we had to wait around for a few minutes until some seats open up. We sat on the bar. No, I didn't order the fondue, which I heard from lots of people that I MUST. So, you can already tell that I would return gladly to taste it. What I had was bittersweet hot chocolate with Godiva shot. After my first taste, I had to brace myself together and make my cup of goodness last. It was that awesome. Hmmmm... bittersweet hot chocolate is my favorite and is already super good plus chocolate Godiva shot?! Plus it was rainy and chili outside? Heck yeah, give me one of those, please! I've been here multiple times, and I normally would give it five stars, except that parking is always insane, because this is on the corner of such a busy area! Their food is great, and the drinks to me are just okay. What makes this place so cool is the atmosphere and the type of people that frequent here. You get a mix of your normal coffee drinkers with those that like to drink and have a good time, and you get a great mix of people all at once. The service is always very attentive to your needs. Yesterday, I ordered a Thai tea, and I saw one, and thought it was mine so I took it. The kind bartender told me that it was actually someone's previous drink that they forgot to pick up, but he gave me the option of getting a new one. And when they ran out of the Thai tea, he offered me a special drink which happened to be a very tasteful iced chai tea latte. I really like Halcyon! It's such a nice place to go with a group of friends or for a little date. I typically go with my best friend when we're bored or when it's late and we're in the mood for s'mores/coffee. S'more are s'mores. They give you a little fire pit with chocolate, kabab sticks, marshmallows, and Hershey's milk chocolate bars. Keep in mind that if you go with 3 people (where one isn't going to eat), don't get the 4 people s'mores portion. My b. I haven't tried any of the adult chocolate drinks like the espresso martini, but I saw a lot of people get it and it looked really good! I typically get the mocha there. It's a pretty typical cup of mocha. I wasn't as chocolately as I would have liked/preferred but still good nonetheless. I had the chicken pesto panini with a side salad one evening since I was really hungry, and it was probably the best thing that happened to me that week. It was so good! The side salad was amazing. The panini was so crispy and the chicken was so juicy. I would highly recommend it to anyone! It's always so packed and there's barley seats at night :( Besides that I think it's a great place to relax,chill, catch up with friends. OVERALL: great place for a quick bite for dessert on a date! AMBIENCE: perfect little place to go for a date with mild lighting and couches for you to sit. These couches have very comfortable pillows to make you feel like you're in your own home. There are some corners with couches that give you a lot of privacy also. Sometimes have live music playing which is quaint but not overpowering of the night to where it's all you can hear. TASTE: we had the smores for 2 people which was about $7. It was your basic Hershey's bar, marshmallows and graham crackers that you could put together from any supermarket but it comes with a small flame to make everything yourself which is cute to share :) SERVICE: No really waitress, but pay at the counter and they bring it to you. Great little place not far from 6th street. Me and my gf stopped by on our night in Austin as we were visiting from San Antonio. We got 2 Thai iced coffees and a s'mores for 2. The coffee was very good and the s'mores were just s'mores. The place was a bit packed and loud from all the people leaving the club located across the street but it was great to see drunk people having a good time enjoying their coffee, everyone (employees and customers) were very nice. They sell tobacco and juul products which I found pretty cool. The reason for one less star is because the wait for the s'mores and coffees was about 35 mins but I'd love to stop by again. read more

This shop is definitely not as good as the one in San Antonio but it'll do the trick. Located downtown, this Halcyon is a lot smaller than the one in Southtown (SAT) but it does have more eclectic seating. The crowd looks quite the same; mostly early 20-something, more than likely college students. The drinks are about the same although I found their chai to be a bit on the spicy side (not heat spicy just chai spicy). My wife just ordered tea so had they messed that up, well, things would have gotten nasty. The one downer was the woman taking our order - the one with all the facial accoutrements that would make it impossible to pass through airport security. She was a bit on the sour-disposition side of things to say the least. I mean, when someone thanks you for something, how hard is it to say, "you're welcome," or even just a "no problem?" One thing I noticed about this place is that they have make-them-yourself smores. You get a tray with a cast iron hibachi, a stack of graham crackers, 2 bars of Hershey's chocolates, marshmallows, and skewers. Too cool. Now maybe the Halcyon is Southtown has this but I've never seen nor asked. Unfortunately, my wife was not interested in making smores. Bummer! Two other quick notes to pass along... Walking in I was a little disappointed as it didn't grab me as 'comfortable', and on a particularly unseasonably cold morning, comfy and cozy was what I needed. On the positive side, they do offer almond milk coffee drinks, which is a much welcome option for those looking for something other than soy. If they didn't put two charming animal crackers on my latte saucer, this place may have only received two stars. However, it's inexpensive. The egg breakfast burrito-type-thing wasn't very customizable and they didn't have salsa for the side, leaving me with hot sauce to aid in the blandness, which made things worse. If I lived in the city, I'd go back at least twice just to make sure my experience wasn't a case of bad luck. But I don't live there, so if I were to return, I'd pass on Halcyon. read more

It was freezing (for Austin) standards and I had a lot of fun torching marshmallows (and watching my friend light a few on fire) before squashing them in between some Graham crackers and chocolate. Love it. 2) Some sort of chocolate martini thing. I don't really know what it was because I was drunk, but it sure was yummy when I had it! You should be able to figure it out when you get there. Really cool building interior, but definitely not enough seats for its location downtown. You seat yourself, and I think most people have enough sense to leave after they're done with their coffee or whatever they're having. There aren't many electrical outlets handy, so that certainly helps keep the stereotypical buy-one-coffee-and-stay-all-day-on-your-laptop customers away. This is a fun location in the Warehouse District and a great place to start your night before venturing out to dirty or West 6th. Live music and trivia nights. Good happy hour prices! We ended up here twice during our trip to Austin. The first time we went it was so packed and they were all out of the desserts we wanted to try. We ended up getting the carrot cake and chocolate ganache and they were both excellent. Everyone was pleasantly surprised. The second time we went we got to do the whole "S'mores" thing, which was a super fun experience. It's nothing crazy but really cool to roast s'mores inside while drinking wine and chatting with friends.
