TL:DR - A mixed bag of amazing, bland, crowded & noisy. I was there last night with my family. It was my wife's birthday and I had heard good things about Blackbrick. I made the reservation on Opentable, and noted it was for a special occasion - Birthday. Arrived 5 mins early. Parking was available - a win for Hyde Park joints. We entered - greeted by the host and we were seated after a couple of minutes. Seating is tight. Server had to pull the table out to sit anyone behind the table - that's how tightly packed they are. Noted that the 2-seat high top tables behind us were also very close - Separated by a decorative partition, but nothing to stop sound traveling. We know more about the extremely profane relationship troubles of the guy behind us than we ever wanted to know. Menu looks amazing. Great selection of dishes. We ordered a Siu mai tower, Char Sui Pork Belly and Salt & Pepper Shrimp for shared appetizers. Pork belly was spot on. Cooked perfectly & torched for a few seconds at the table. Not sure if that was a necessary step - Felt superficial and didn't really add anything to the dish. Siu Mai tower was good. 2 of each variety, arriving in its own custom shipping crate. Dipping sauces were good. Salt & pepper shrimp was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Entrees are served family style. We got the elk, fried chicken, Thai Green Curry, and Kung Pao Shrimp. Sides - Egg plant, S&P Fennel, Fried Yuka. Entrees were good for the most part. Flavorful, Sichuan spices. The big let down was the Green Curry Noodles. Extremely bland flavor - like noodles in coconut milk. The whole Thai red chili pepper garnish lied to us and set unrealistic expectations of what lay ahead. Sides were all spot-on in flavor and presentation. Dessert - With birthday cake waiting at home, we just ordered the Red Bean Sesame balls to try them. We joked it would likely be 2x tiny little deep-fried balls like you'd get from your local Chinese restaurant, but noting the price, we predicted something a little larger and more creative. We actually erupted in laughter when 2x tiny little deep-fried balls were delivered to the table, covered in a truffle-oil honey (what were you thinking there?). If you're going to charge $17 for 2x red bean balls, at least set expectation correctly by having the server wear a ski mask. That sealed the deal for us. Would I go back? All things considered - No. The inconsistency in the dishes, the insulting dessert, the lack of even a simple 'Happy Birthday' greeting from neither the staff nor the owner's wife despite mentioning that we were there for her birthday. Learning all about Sweary Chad's relationship problems, being a human sardine, and a $380 check. Got the tomahawk steak deal with the crab and pork dumplings, eggplant, broccoli, and fried rice, and everything was AMAZING! The tomahawk steak was cooked perfectly, and the delicious sauce really tied everything together. The eggplant had the perfect texture and was packed with great earthy flavors. The soup dumpling was so delicious, with an incredible burst of umami. And the fried rice was perfect -- fluffy, well-seasoned, and not clumped together at all. My only critique is that the tomahawk steak was supposed to come with mandarin pancakes, but they forgot to bring them out. We were unaware that the pancakes were supposed to accompany the steak, so we didn't realize anything was missing until we had already finished the steak. There's one room we always get sat at in this location and the tables are so close together that the server has to pull the table out so whoever is sitting on the inside can scoot in... But once they are in even with food on the table, you would have to move the table out the way to get out to go to the restroom or take a call, etc. on the other hand, the pros... The food is so good. I've been to both locations and I can say everything has so much flavor... Our server had the best recommendations and when we went against his recommendations, we thought maybe we should've listened to him i.e. the char sui baby back ribs (maybe try thr other style of ribs next time) Everything else was delicious: the drinks the apps, which I think are the star of this restaurant The black brick tower is a must so you can try all the main dumplings. We were a little disappointed because we ve tried the truffle rice a few times before and the truffle just wasn't as potent or prominent in this visit's dish. I was seated with my family of 3 on Mother's Day weekend and it was difficult with a toddler but more so with the plates that we ordered. The table was too small for the amount of food we ordered and for our drinks. So it was difficult to enjoy the dining. However the food itself was delicious! Wow! Would probably give the food 2/5 but the staff was great and the music was good. Dessert was delicious (apple tart and the Dubai sundae). Mushroom noodles were bland. Fried rice was very mushy. One container of dumplings in the tower were just ground meat in wrapper (seemingly no flavor or green onion or anything mixed in so it was dry). The gator was tender but the general tsos sauce was pretty overwhelming and sweet. Brussels were also soggy and overly sweet. Salt and pepper shrimp tasted good but not crispy enough (though it was crispy compared to everything else). I liked the mushroom rice dumpling the best but it wasn't anything incredible. Wasn't really impressed by any of the food which was a disappointment because the place seemed to have potential. We were sat in a somewhat private back room due to the size of our party and we enjoyed it although it was humid and the AC was blasting in ways that had most us very damp and cold. Though I am a little more critical with Asian food since the best Asian food are found at a little hole in the walls. It was overall a great experience. I went on a Wednesday night with a big group. Brittany was taking care of us. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and the background of the history of how the restaurant came to be. The place had a dark moody vibe with art works from Basquiat. The menu was stacked with a great variety of good items. We started with the dumplings, (not pictured), and all the food we had looked amazing! Now, to the how the food actually tasted. I would say that it exceeded my expectations. I've had food from an upscale modern Asian type restaurant, and most of them left me disappointed, but this one wasn't bad. I don't even like Brussels stouts, yet it was really good, even tried the Gator! I was told that the eggroll was good, I found it to be okay. But everything else was great. We got sat at the high top table but we didn't care for the chair as they were wobbly and felt unstable. It also felt just a tiny cramped. If you love elevated Asian food and happen to be in Tampa, you must come to this restaurant. The standard dishes have a slight twist that make it above standard. Lets start with the soup dumplings. These were smaller than what I expected but extremely flavorful. These egg rolls were huge and great for sharing. I went into this restaurant skeptical because I just recently read an article that they threatened legal action on someone for a review they posted. I will start off to say the service was great. The drinks were also pretty good. The thing I was not expecting was the hefty, oh so very hefty price tag. We walked out the door with tip for 2, spending over $200. We had 2 appetizers and 2 specialities which they say are shareable. We also had 5 drinks. Gyoza was good. Egg roll is sold as 1 big roll with the ground meat inside. It was not flavorful to me, just bland. Next the fried rice... for my taste and opinion it was mostly egg and way too much prosciutto. Barely any rice. No way on gods green earth do I think that worth $38. I could get fried rice from the local Chinese takeout that tastes better for 1/5 the price. I could not believe my eyes when I saw the price of that. The noodles were okay, I don't believe they were worth $32. Lastly, the decor was more of a nightclub vibe not what I would think as a high end restaurant with the type of food they served. I just want to start out by saying I am not trying to sway anyone away from coming here but it is in my opinion that this isn't the best Chinese restaurant in Tampa. While there was nothing wrong with the dishes we were served and the staff were friendly and attentive, nothing here blew me away or seemed like a unique take on classic Szechuan cooking. Also they preface at the beginning of the meal that their dishes are to be shared "family style" and they are large portions but in reality everything we ordered, with the exception of the fried rice, was moderately sized at best. My favourite dish of the night was the Duck Breast. It had an orange sauce that was sweet and punchy. Duck was cooked well but odd it is a $31 dish that does not come with any rice. I won't go into detail of every dish we had because they all were fine and we didn't have any complaints. My issue is they present themselves as elevated Chinese but it really is just comparable to PF Chang's. I think if that's the kind of Chinese food you like you'll love this place. Lastly the decor is very kitschy. It really throws you off upon entering. It does not match the food or the price tag. read more

This is the second and newest location for Hales Blackbrick. The restaurant is located in the space formerly occupied by Thee Tree House. They completed revamped the space and spared no expense. The space is artistic, funky, modern, and elegant. In terms of design, it seems like a space you are more likely to find in Wynwood than Tampa...and thats a great thing because there is no other restaurant like it in town. In terms of the food, it has the same menu as the other location. I visited the restaurant during the grand soft opening. The service and food were both excellent. We had the fried chicken which was small bites that were overly chewy and tasted like straight seafood... so rubbery I had to spit some out, the truffle fried rice which was so bland we had to ask for soy sauce just to consume it and we had the Brussel sprouts which was probably the best tasting item but severely over saturated and soaked in sauce- it could have been pieces of cardboard and I wouldn't be able to tell what it actually was given the amount of sauce. Had high expectations but it fell short. It's not that the food doesn't taste good, it's that it doesn't taste as excellent as the price tag says. The value isn't there. Also as Chinese, just because there's ginger or dry chilli pepper, or garlic used doesn't make a dish Chinese. It's fushion at best, almost everything (except dim sum) that we inquired is at least lightly fried if not deep fried, which makes it not healthy or the way to prep fresh ingredients in Chinese mind set. The value is low, kind of like Ro in Hyde Park. It's good, just not good enough for the price. Service is good if not TOO attentive on a Monday night. Me and my friend were trying to talk the duration of the night but our conversation was interrupted probably 20 times, dishes were taken away almost too quickly, as they were "hurrying" us when there are other tables open. However, the rest of the restaurant was extremely loud! We ordered a little bit of everything with the highlights being the dumplings, rabbit, bison, and Brussels. Everything had quite a kick, so be prepared for the spice! The low light was the truffle fried rice- not a distinct truffle flavor. Overall, the prices were STEEP for the atmosphere which was club-like. Our waiter was prompt and friendly. We even got to meet Chef Hale which was super cool! Also as a non-drinker there was a motel I had that was maybe one of my favorite cocktails I've ever had and all of my restaurant adventures. It was called the Violet Temple! So it's really 3.5 stars for me. We ventured to the restaurant this past week to give it a try- on a Wed. We arrived around 6:45 to no wait. They did ask us (3 of us) if we had a reservation and we didn't. The "looks" from the host was a bit condescending as if to say- "seriously you showed up without a reservation" to which I replied with a similar look "are YOU serious, half the place is empty". None the less we were seated quickly! The ambiance of the restaurant is eclectic and almost forced as if to say - we're trying to be trendy, we really are. It is very dark inside and I wouldn't describe it as warm on any level...black walls (Hales Blackbrick) pink cutout accent walls, neon here and there- not cohesive in my opinion. There is a bar at the entrance with a large TV mounted on the wall and it's a total distraction if they are attempting to establish a vibe in the dining room. But enough about that. We ordered several starters- the green beans which were pretty tasty- lots of oil though- but tasty. Salt and Pepper shrimp- lacking in the flavor department, and a giant egg roll which was somewhat tasty. Served with soy sauce. I ordered the Chicken and Chive noodle. It was "ok". I wasn't expecting ground chicken and with the "soupiness" of the bowl, it sank to the bottom. There was a lot of oil in the dish as well. It was ok in the taste department but I had to eat the chicken with a fork because chopsticks weren't cutting it. Would I return? Eh- I wouldn't run back. My husband said we didn't want waters but that's all we got because our drinks weren't ready he didn't even get his beer.
