Average breakfast place. I felt the ambience and location to be appealing. However the size of the menu was very disappointing as I was craving corned beef hash, which they did not offer. I ordered the "special omelette" that included chicken sausage, tomato, avocado, and cheddar. The omelette was nothing special, as I feel was comparable to an omelette made at home. The hash browns on the side was not as crispy as I hoped, and felt more like mash potatoes. I did enjoy the biscuit and marmalade butter. If I'm ever in the area, it's a chance I might try again in hope dog of ordering something more appetizing and a fan favorite (eggs benedict). I went here for brunch on my first date with my husband, and it has become our favorite Sunday brunch place. Good memories, good food, love the ambience. It's like being outside, even when you don't sit on the patio. This is the only place that consistently cooks my eggs the way I like them - over medium, yolk still runny, and the white totally cooked through and a little brown on the outside. They are perfect every single time. I can't say that about anyplace else.I love the red potatoes. I always save half of my English muffin for dessert and pile on the delicious blueberry jam that's in little containers on the table. We tried this place out on our way to the beach. I got the two egg breakfast with hash browns and the house-made spicy sausage. The sausage was spicy! but unfortunately a bit dry as house-made sausages never have enough fat. My husband got the eggs Benedict with home fries (which were nice and crispy). My son got the breakfast panini (looked standard). My daughter had the whole wheat raspberry pancakes that were superlative. They were very moist, tender and had lots of raspberries cooked into the tops. We all enjoyed our breakfasts (except for my sausage) and would definitely come again. read more

I was in search for a classic brunch place today where I could get benedict and read. Stumbling into Half Day was as if my prayers were answered. What a beautiful little cafe, with bright sun pouring through the windows, looking out onto the trees outside. The service was great (waitress didn't flinch when I made my high maintenance order for toast instead of muffin, sauce on side, and veggie additions, bless her). Food was yummy. It's worth the wait to get inside the greenhouse inspired Half Day Cafe. This brunch favorite is a classic Marin spot. The California cuisine comes in large portions and they offer a range of tempting coffee, smoothie, and espresso drinks. My favorites include their fruit cobbler a la mode (whichever fruit is in season) and soy lattes. I'm drawn back to this restaurant for its airy, sunlit atmosphere. A couple weeks back, we decided to stop at Half Day Cafe for breakfast/brunch. Once we got in, we knew we would be waiting for a while- the place was packed! Granted, it was a Sunday, and were told that the wait was about twenty minutes. We probably sat down for about 5 minutes before we were seated (so far, so good!) We heard great comments about the pancakes, so we ordered the ones with blueberries. We also ordered eggs, fruit, and the other usual breakfast fixings. The wait was a little long, but I would say that we did not wait more than 10 minutes. When we received our food, we were pleasantly surprised- everything was fresh and tasty. Those pancakes, however, stole the show- they were as big as someone's face and melted in my mouth. Overall, we had a great dining experience, and I will definitely be back for those pancakes. read more

What a fantastic find! If it hadn't been for the Bay Bridge closure and subsequently terrible traffic on 101 Southbound I would never have passed by this adorable little cafe taking the back roads to work in Mill Valley. The French toast with orange butter is absolutely to die for, hands down the best French toast I have ever had. They also make fantastic smoothies--such as the Espresso Cooler which I had with bee pollen for extra oomph. The ambiance is relaxed, open and warm. A peaceful place to spend the morning or afternoon. My mom came along and she had the raspberry pancakes which were so fresh and just bursting with flavor. Average foo foo breakfast/lunch place - meaning its definately better breakfast than your typical denny's or i-hop. But the price range on the menu justifies it, so that cancels out the credit i give to the higher quality prepared food. very reminiscent of Grapevine chains. Large portions, homemade breakfast platter-like, meaning, i think i can make this plate at home if i wanted to put the effort to it. I had the harvest special or something to that effect. I'd go here if i were in the area again, but would not go out of my way to seek it. There's others around the bay area that are similar to this place. But i'd take friends here, since its a safe bet - you cant really go wrong with these breakfast items. the only thing that would discourage me is the long wait to get a table. It saddens me to say that my favorite lunch restaurant has gone downhill in its ability to make a simple Chinese chicken salad. Both my table mate and I got the same salads and neither of us finished for the first time in the many years that we have been going to this wonderful restaurant. Having recently moved from the East Coast, we've been in search of a great breakfast place. Some where we can read our NY Times, not feel rushed and enjoy a pretty setting and great food. Half Day wins on all counts. We visited this morning for the first time and we loved it. We thought a weekday morning we'd find it empty but we had about a ten minute wait. The room is huge, airy, bright, a really nice setting with tables well spaced. I had the Italian scramble and substituted the scone of the day (orange/currant) for the toast. I asked for it to be very well done and it was perfect, very flavorful, not greasy at all and the scone was delicious. My husband had the 5 grain hot cereal, a huge portion with fresh fruit which he really enjoyed and then he had half of my eggs. The portions are more than generous. Our waitress was lovely, the coffee was great and the food even better than we'd expected. Half Day will be one of our favorite places to return to. read more

This place would have been 5 stars but there are two things costing it that last star... the service was slow (over 10 minutes to get our check) and dogs arent allowed at the tables on their outside patio (even though its legal now). Other than that, the food was amazing. I had the breakfast pannini and my bf had the french toast with orange butter. YUMMY! Only slight rip-off was the side of chicken-apple sausage was $4 and it was just three small links. We went on a mid-Sunday morning, only a 10 minute wait. I think that the service was more of an issue with our waitress. We will be back to give it another try. read more

Until we moved from San Francisco in July, 2014, had Sunday brunch at Half Day several times a month, and anytime during the week I could think of an excuse to cross the bridge. Long been my absolute favorite place for breakfast. I didn't write a glowing review before simply because I thought it was busy enough on Sundays. First, the food is sensational. Consistently perfect. Best French toast I've ever had except for that made by a friend's French grandmother. (She soaked hers overnight, browned it, then finished in the oven.) HD's is nearly that good -- and I can understand why it's not practical for a restaurant to use the method. Great eggs benedict and variations, and excellent omelettes. Perhaps best is the system of letting customers choose exactly what they want in an omelette or scramble -- four items from a long list of meat, cheese, vegetables and salsa. Fruit can be substituted for potatoes, and owner must have a fruit room where melons are stored until they are perfectly ripe. Never a too green cantaloupe. Housemade pastries are wonderful. Specials are always interesting, and if we were there at lunch time, husband loved the club or margarita sandwiches, or particuarly the blackened burger. Service is sensational, from the host at door to the servers. Over the years, became genuinely fond of several. When someone in our new location asks what we miss most about San Francisco, Half Day shares the list with a couple of dearest friends, the fellow who took care of my hair color, the world's best manicurist, and a couple of far, far, far more expensive restaurants. read more

Until about three years ago, the Half Day Cafe was definitely a 5-Star facility. Then, for reasons I've not figured out (that's not my job), it began to decline and has continued to so do. Consequently, we don't go there nearly as often as we used to. When we do (about once every two months or so), there has been a continuous but not dramatic decline in the quality of the food (including not timely delivered, unreasonably cold, no "jam" with the toast, etc.) but the more pressing problem is in getting the attention of someone to wait on patrons. This is a problem at the hostess desk; when it comes time to order; and when you need someone to bring jam for the toast getting cold or want a refill of coffee. Its a lovely place. I have been going to Half Day Cafe since I was 3 years old and they were open for dinner. this has to be my absolute favorite place to dine (and I've dined all over the world) the food is AMAZING (the club is my go to but when I splurge I go for the burger). The staff is so friendly and like an extended family to me. They always ask how my daughter is and how I am doing. Even though I don't live in the area anymore I still try to make it to HDC at least once a month. They also have a kids menu which is great because then you don't have to worry about trying to figure out what to feed your little one. I recommend HDC to everyone and anyone I come in contact with who asks about a good place to eat in Marin. It really is one of the best little gems of Marin County and the best food! read more

My boyfriend has wanted to take me to this place for the last week since he enjoys it. I honestly didn't expect too much, but I was pleasantly surprised. We got there at 12ish and waited 15 minutes to sit outside (which was lovely). I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and they were insanely delicious. I literally cooed with pleasure with each bite. I'll keep this short. The food is good and the restaurant lay out is very nice. Its a popular place so it is always busy. I have one complaint that really annoys me about this place. It a Breakfast/Lunch place yet if you ask for potatoes with your eggs you are told that no you cant have that after 11am. WTF? What breakfast place arbitrary denies you potatoes? It is a really strange policy. What is the justification? Is it because there is too much potato food waste, or its too hard for the kitchen staff to prep? Is the chef an anti-potato tyrant? I would like to know the specific facts and the justification this Seinfeld-ian "no potatoes for you" policy. A breakfast place having servers tell patrons that NO after 11am you cant have potatoes. The food is awesome here! My favorite is their pastries and coffee. Way better than Starbucks. Also very conveniently located right next to my school. The employees are friendly, the food is good, the service is fast, and the lines are not that long. I love this place! Give it a try! Their sandwiches and salads are to die for good. read more

WHAT A GREAT FIND!!!! The service was great!!! Jenn was so sweet and so attentive to serving us what we felt like having for instance i wanted the Chorizo Scramble (homemade chorizo) but i wanted tortillas instead of bread and beans instead of hashbrowns. Then i wanted some potatoes also.. Jenn (our server was very accomodating.. we also got the wheat and sunflower seed waffles.... The food was delish! The waiting area has coffee for you as one waits OMG the coffee was awesome! couldnt stop drinking it and not only that the servers kept our coffee cups full of coffee!!!! Staff is super friendly and food is pretty good, I love this place for the outside patio when it's sunny. They bake their own scones, starting at 4:30, or at least that's what they told me. Prices aren't bad especially compared to other breakfast place down the street. Get their tortilla scramble and a mimosa to start your day. Should be 3.5 stars, but had to round up for the restaraunt. Good location, very busy, but staff is friendly and attentive. Just split a sandwhich, but the food was great and arrived quickly. Looked like the breakfasts were tasty as well and the pastries looked really good. Definitely will go back. I will say that this gets a bit more of the Ross crowd, so be aware of a bit of an "uppity" attitude from other patrons. read more

i really wish i could make it here more often. this is a hidden little spot that is always filled with morning joggers, young couples with kids in strollers and all the Marin crowd enjoying Saturday mornings. The environment is very peaceful and is all windows to keep you warm. This place screams "Marin" to me. read more
